  • Pilot Symbol-Assisted Decision-Directed Coherent Adaptive Array Diversity for DS-CDMA Mobile Radio Reverse Link

    Pilot symbol-assisted (PSA) decision-directed coherent adaptive array diversity (CAAD) is proposed for increasing the reverse link capacity of DS-CDMA mobile radio systems. In the proposed scheme, PSA channel estimation is applied to coherent Rake combining, and the weights of the antenna array are adaptively updated using both pilot symbols and decision-directed data symbols after Rake combining as references for minimum mean squared error (MMSE) criteria. The reverse link capacity of a 3-sectored base station is evaluated by computer simulation when fast transmit power control (TPC) based on singal-to-interference plus backgound noise power ratio (SIR) measurement is applied under nultipath Rayleigh fading environments. It is shown that a 6-element (sector) CAAD receiver can increase the capacity to about 4.2 times that with a single antenna (per sector) receiver when links are interference-limited. The link capacity achievable with the 6-element CAAD receiver is 1.2 times that with a 6-branch antenna diversity reciever with antenna spacing of 10 carrier wavelengths, while significantly reducing the strong interference from high bit rate transmission (high transmit power) users.

    This paper proposes high-speed similitude retrieval schemes for a viewpoint-based similarity discrimination system (VB-SDS) and presents analytical and experimental performance evaluations. The VB-SDS, which contains a huge set of semantic definitions of commonly used words and computes semantic similarity between any two words under a certain viewpoint, promises to be a very important module in analogical and case-based reasoning systems that provide solutions under uncertainty. By computing and comparing similarities for all words contained in the system, the most similar word for a given word can be retrieved under a given viewpoint. However, the time this consumes makes the VB-SDS unsuitable for inference systems. The proposed schemes reduce search space based on the upper bound of a similarity calculation function to increase retrieval speed. An analytical evaluation shows the schemes can achieve a thousand-fold speedup and confirmed through experimental results for a VB-SDS containing about 40,000 words.

    A new flow algorithm is described on the basis of the primal-dual method, which is to be adopted dedicatedly for the regeneration of optimal layouts for functional cells of the standard-cell level. In advance of discussing this main theme, the present paper first outlines a practical scheme of reusing those layouts which have been once generated for functional cells in an old fabrication technology, and then formulates an optimization problem for regenerating optimal layouts of functional cells under the constraints incurred by the renewal of design rules. An efficient algorithm proposed here aims at solving this optimization problem with the use of solution concepts for the minimum cost flow problem. A part of experimental results is also shown, which indicates that the proposed altorithm is the fastest for this optimization problem.

    From the standpoint of reducing the electromagnetic (EM) absorption in the human head for portable telephones, a ferrite sheet is proposed to use as a protection attachment between the antenna and the head. By using an anatomically based head model and a realistic portable telephone model, the effects of the ferrite sheet on both the reduction of EM absorption and antenna radiation pattern are numerically analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results show that a ferrite sheet can result in a reduction over 13% for the spatial peak SAR averaged over one gram of tissue relative to a degradation below 0.6 dB for the antenna radiation pattern.

  • Low-Power Circuit Design Techniques for Si Bipolar Gbit/s LSIsAn Overview

    This paper surveys low-power design techniques for Si bipolar Gbit/s LSIs. First, a total strategy for power reduction in bipolar LSIs is described. The power dissipation of Si bipolar LSIs can be minimized by reducing the supply voltage, switching and driving currents, the power of input and output circuits, and the equivalent "on" ratio. Widely spread activities from device to architecture levels are indispensable and each of the low-power techniques reduces power by a factor of about 0.5 to 0.7. The integration of these techniques is very important, and as a certain example of their effectiveness, an SOH signal processing LSI is demonstrated with a reduction factor of 1/10. Comparisons with other device technologies for low power characteristics reveal the low-power potential of bipolar LSIs in the Gbit/s region.

  • Cochannel Interference Rejection in Multipath Channels

    In addition to additive thermal noise, a received direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) signal may suffer from intersymbol interference (ISI) and interference caused by cochannel narrowband users or other narrowband radio frequency interference (RFI). This paper presents a workable solution for removing narrowband interference (NBI) and reducing ISI or inter-chip interference (ICI) when the communication channel can be modeled as an FIR filter and the NBI comes from multiple CW tones, an AR-modeled Gaussian process, or a BPSK signal. Unlike earlier solutions, the proposed scheme is capable of performing the functions of NBI-rejection, ISI/ICI suppression and data detection (code despreading) simultaneously. It is easy to implement and, more importantly, it yields lower bit error rate (BER) and smaller mean squared error (MSE).

  • A Proposal of Novel Synchronous Acquisition Method with an Adaptive Filter in Asynchronous DS/CDMA

    This paper proposes a novel synchronous acquisition method with an adaptive filter in asynchronous direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) communication systems. An adaptive filter is used in a single-user receiver, in complete synchronization of desired user's signal, the tap coefficients of the filter are controlled to orthogonalize to all other user's spreading sequences without knowledge of the sequences, amplitude and time delays of the signals. While, in the proposed system for synchronous acquisition, the tap coefficients are controlled to orthogonalize to all user's sequences including desired user's signal. The synchronous acquisition can be achieved by using the difference of cross-correlation function value between desired user's sequence of inphase and the tap coefficients for each phase. The principle and performance evaluation for the proposed method are shown. As a result, compared to an acquisition method of conventional sliding correlator, considerable improvement of the average acquisition time can be achieved in large power multiple access interference environment.

    This paper proposes an analysis method of scaling-factor-quantization error in fractal image coding using a state-space approach with the statistical analysis method. It is shown that the statistical analysis method is appropriate and leads to a simple result, whereas the deterministic analysis method is not appropriate and leads to a complex result for the analysis of fractal image coding. We derive the output error variance matrix for the measure of error and define the output error variance by scalar quantity as the mean of diagonal elements of the output error variance matrix. Examples are given to show that the scaling-factor-quantization error due to iterative computation with finite-wordlength scaling factors degrades the quality of decoded images. A quantitative comparison of experimental scaling-factor-quantization error with analytical result is made for the output error variance. The result shows that our analysis method is valid for the fractal image coding.

    This paper is concerned with CDMA applied to personal and mobile communications on a global basis using multiple low earth orbital satellites (LEOS). We focus our attention on some unique aspects of LEOS systems and discuss their influences on the CDMA system performance as well as the techniques for coping with these aspects. We deal with three kinds of important items that are unique to LEOS systems; Doppler frequency shift due to satellite movement, propagation delay affecting packetized data transmission and geographical nonunifomity in traffic.

  • Acquisition Performance of PN Synchronization Loop for DS-SS Signals with Doppler Shift

    In this paper, we study and analyze the overall acquisition performance of the combined acquisition-tracking synchronization loop for direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) signals in the presence of Doppler shift. We consider both the change of effective search rate and the impact on the detection probability due to Doppler for the acquisition loop. We also determine the acquisition behavior of the digital delay lock loop (DDLL) in the presence of code Doppler. As a result, the influence of the DDLL's acquiring capability on the complete acquisition process is investigated and some numerical results are presented to demonstrate the acquisition performances of this combined loop which are quite different from the previous reports.

  • An Analysis of Frame Synchronization Systems with Racing Counters and Majority Rule for M-ary/SS Communication Systems

    In this paper, a simple frame synchronization system for M-ary Spread Spectrum (M-ary/SS) communication system is analyzed. In particular, synchronization performance, bit error rate performance, and Spread Spectrum Multiple Access (SSMA) performance are analyzed. The frame synchronization system uses the racing counters. The transmitted signal contains framing chips that are added to spreading sequences. In the receiver, the framing chips are detected from several frames. The authors have proposed the simple frame synchronization system that detects framing chips from consecutive 2 frames. In this system, as the number of framing chips increases, synchronization performance improves and bit error rate performance degrades. In this paper a frame synchronization system that improves bit error rate performance is treated and analyzed. As the rusult, when the number of reference frames is 3, the bit error rate is much improved than the conventional system.

  • Power-Efficient Forward Link Design for Introducing Data Communications Services in Wireless CDMA Networks

    This paper presents a method to examine the effect of introducing data application services on existing wireless CDMA networks where conventional voice communications service is being provided. Since the total number of channels used in a cell is limited in the interfering cellular environments, some voice-traffic channels should be sacrificed when an additional channel is introduced for data services. We investigate this trade-off by analyzing the interference the forward link channels generate. It is also an objective of this paper to examine the forward link capacity in terms of the numbers of paging and voice-/data-traffic channels so as to determine the impact of introducing data services via paging and traffic channels. Different capacity regions are plotted for various cellular environments.

  • Orthogonalization Using Multicarrier Pre-Decorrelation in a Multipath Fading Channel

    Pre-decorrelation is a method of achieving orthogonalization between multiple signals on the forward link. This technique can achieve orthogonalization in a flat fading channel, however, the orthogonality does not clearly appear in a multipath fading channel because of interchip interference. In order to eliminate the effect of multipath and prevent interchip interference, multicarrier modulation can be employed. In this paper we propose a multicarrier pre-decorrelation technique which combines multicarrier modulation with pre-decorrelation. Computer simulation results show that the proposed technique can achieve orthogonalization in a multipath fading channel.

  • A Constant Amplitude Coding for Orthogonal Multi-Code CDMA Systems

    In this paper, we present orthogonal multi-code CDMA systems with the constant amplitude transmission. In general, the dynamic range of the amplitude of the transmitting signal is very large in the case of orthogonal multi-code CDMA systems. In order to realize the constant amplitude transmission for orthogonal multi-code CDMA systems, we propose a constant amplitude coding. First, we show the basic concept of the constant amplitude coding. And then, we show that the constant amplitude transmission can be realized by the combination of the conventional orthogonal multi-code CDMA and the constant amplitude coding. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated in terms of the bit error rate performance and it is shown that the proposed method is robust to the non-linear distortion caused by a high power amplifier (HPA).

  • Approximation Method for Deriving Transmission Efficiency in Direct-Sequence Spread ALOHA Communications System Using a Unified Spread Code

    Considering that the application of the direct-sequence slotted spread ALOHA communications system to access/control channel is effective in communications systems with traffic channels operating at CDMA mode, the spread ALOHA communications system is discussed in terms of the system configuration and transmission efficiency. The transmission efficiency of the spread ALOHA communications system using a unified spread code is derived by means of two methods. One is based on the simulation of demodulation algorithm, and the other is based on the approximation by modeling. It becomes obvious from quantitative evaluation in terms of the probability of packet success and the throughput performance that the approximated results coincide with the simulated results, and that the modeling is very effective to estimate the transmission efficiency of the spread ALOHA communications system.

    This paper proposes and investigates a vehicular radar system that can measure the distance to, the relative speed of and the direction of arrival (DOA) of the reflected waves from multiple targets or vehicles using the direct-sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) technique. In particular, we propose a DOA estimation scheme using a multi-beam antenna. In order to show that the proposed system can accurately measure the above mentioned quantities, the performance is evaluated numerically in a multipath environment. Moreover, optimal multi-beam pattern is derived to minimize error probability of DOA estimation.

  • Bearing Estimation for Wideband Signals in a Multipath Channel

    This letter proposes and investigates a method of estimating the direction of arrival (DOA) of wideband signals such as spread spectrum signals, in a multipath channel. The DOA estimation method can reduce the effect of signal distortion due to bandwidth of signals by creating a spatial spectrum wihch satisfies the sampling theory in the time domain. The DOA estimate calculated from this spatial spectrum is robust against signal distortion due to multipath. Computer simulations numerically evaluate the proposed method. In comparison with conventional MUSIC algorithm, the proposed method achieves superior performance in a multipath channel.

    We propose concepts of Paley-Wiener multiresolution analysis and Paley-Wiener wavelet frame based on general, not limited to dyadic, dilations of functions. Such a wavelet frame is an extension both of the Shannon wavelet basis and the Journe-Meyer wavelet basis. A concept of "natural" Paley-Wiener wavelet frame is also proposed to clarify whether a Paley-Wiener wavelet frame can naturally express functions from the point of view of the multiresolution analysis. A method of constructing a natural Paley-Wiener wavelet frame is given. By using this method, illustrative examples of Paley-Wiener wavelet frames with general scales are provided. Finally, we show that functions can be more efficiently expressed by using a Paley-Wiener wavelet frame with general scales.

    This paper presents a technique to determine prime implicants in multi-level combinational networks. The method is based on a graph representation of Boolean functions called AND/OR reasoning graphs. This representation follows from a search strategy to solve the satisfiability problem that is radically different from conventional search for this purpose (such as exhaustive simulation, backtracking, BDDs). The paper shows how to build AND/OR reasoning graphs for arbitrary combinational circuits and proves basic theoretical properties of the graphs. It will be demonstrated that AND/OR reasoning graphs allow us to naturally extend basic notions of two-level switching circuit theory to multi-level circuits. In particular, the notions of prime implicants and permissible prime implicants are defined for multi-level circuits and it is proved that AND/OR reasoning graphs represent all these implicants. Experimental results are shown for PLA factorization.

  • A Link-Disjoint Submesh for Processor Allocation in Mesh Computers

    A processor allocation scheme for mesh computers greatly affects their system utilization. The performance of an allocation scheme is largely dependent on its ability to detect available submeshes. We propose a new type of submesh, called a link-disjoint submesh, for processor allocation in mesh computers. This type of submesh increases the submesh recognition capability of an allocation scheme. A link-disjoint submesh is not a contiguous submesh as in the previous scheme, but this submesh still has no common communication link with any other submesh. When wormhole routing or circuit switching is used, the communication delay caused by non-contiguous processor allocation is minor. Through simulation, the performance of our scheme is measured and compared to the previous schemes in terms of such parameters as finish time and system utilization. It is shown through simulation that the link-disjoint submesh increases the performance of an allocation scheme.
