  • ULSI Technology Trends toward 256K/1G DRAMs

    If a perspective of the "256M/1G era" were to be made from this present, namely the last stage of the development of 64 M DRAMs, the process technologies will show a variety of progress. Some of them would remain only in the extension of the present ones, but others would show a fundamental change including their technological constitutions. The optical lithography will survive even the "256M/1G era" mainly with the innovations of mask technologies. The etching technologies will remain basically the same as the present ones, but will be much more refined. The studies on plasma/redical related surface reactions, however, will bring a variety of surface treatment technologies of new function. The interconnection technologies will encounter various kinds of difficulties both in materials and in processign, and mechanical processing will become one of ULSI processing technologies. The shallow junction technology will merge with the metallization and epitaxial growth technology. The thin dielectrics will approach a critical situation, and it might enhance the device structural change to three dimensional ones. Corresponding to this, the necessity of "vertical processing" will become larger. The bonding SOI technology might overcome these situations of increasing difficulties. On the other hand, the contamination control will be the base of these technology innovations and improvements, exploring a new technology field in addition to the conventional process technology fields.

  • Exponentially Weighted Step-Size Projection Algorithm for Acoustic Echo Cancellers

    This paper proposes a new adaptive algorithm for acoustic echo cancellers with four times the convergence speed for a speech input, at almost the same computational load, of the normalized LMS (NLMS). This algorithm reflects both the statistics of the variation of a room impulse response and the whitening of the received input signal. This algorithm, called the ESP (exponentially weighted step-size projection) algorithm, uses a different step size for each coefficient of an adaptive transversal filter. These step sizes are time-invariant and weighted proportional to the expected variation of a room impulse response. As a result, the algorithm adjusts coefficients with large errors in large steps, and coefficients with small errors in small steps. The algorithm is based on the fact that the expected variation of a room impulse response becomes progressively smaller along the series by the same exponential ratio as the impulse response energy decay. This algorithm also reflects the whitening of the received input signal, i.e., it removes the correlation between consecutive received input vectors. This process is effective for speech, which has a highly non-white spectrum. A geometric interpretation of the proposed algorithm is derived and the convergence condition is proved. A fast profection algorithm is introduced to reduce the computational complexity and modified for a practical multiple DSP structure so that it requires almost the same computational load, 2L multiply-add operations, as the conventional NLMS. The algorithm is implemented in an acoustic echo canceller constructed with multiple DSP chips, and its fast convergence is demonstrated.

  • Applying Attribute Grammars to Construct Fault-Tolerant Environments for Distributed Software Development

    When a group of developers are involved in the distributed development of some software product, they must communicate with one another frequently to exchange information about the product. To reduce the penalty of communication, the support environment should provide developers with their necessary information and update the information automatically while the product is modified by developers. Furthermore, the environment must meet the following requirements despite of workstation failures: whether a specific information is correct or not should always be decidable; as much information as possible should be updated correctly and efficiently. This paper presents a framework to construct such a fault-tolerant environment based on attribute grammars. In the framework, a product is represented by an attributed tree, which is partitioned into several subtrees {T1,,Tm}. Attribute values in each subtree Ti(1im) express the information about the product required by a developer. We introduce a set of redundant data and algorithms to meet the fault-tolerance requirements mentioned above. The correctness of an attribute value in Ti can then be decided in O(mn0log n) time, where n0n, and n is the number of attribute instances in Ti. All available attribute values can be updated with time complexity O(m2n1 log n) and communication complexity O(m2), where n1 is the number of attribute instances that must be reevaluated.

  • An Acoustic Echo Canceller with Sub-Band Noise Cancelling

    An acoustic echo canceller that also cancels room noise is proposed. This system has an additive (noise reference) input port, and a noise canceller (NC) precedes the echo canceller (EC) in a cascade configuration. The adaptation control problem for the cascaded echo and noise canceller is solved by controlling the adaptation process to match the occurrence of intermittent speech/echo; the room noise is a stationary signal. A simulation shows that adaptation using the NLMS algorithm is very effective for the echo and noise cancellation. Sub-band cancelling techniques are utilized. Noise cancellation is realized with a lower band EC. Hardware is implemented and its performance evaluated through experiments under a real acoustic field. The combination of the EC with NC maintains excellent performance at all echo to room noise power ratios. It is shown that the proposed canceller overcomes the disadvantages traditionally associated with ECs and NSc.

  • Planar Inductor for Very Small DC-DC Converters

    A newly developed planar inductor and its application to dc-dc converters are described. The planar inductor consists of a planar spiral coil and soft magnetic sheets, it has a small size (11110.8mm), 33µH inductance and a maximum quality factor of 14. The step down chopper dc-dc converter has been developed by using planar inductor, which has small size (20154mm), 5V-2W typical output and output power/volume ratio of 1.7W/cc. The switching converter can be miniaturized by using the planar inductor.

  • AC Resistivity and Power Loss of Mn-Zn Ferrites

    Ac resistivity and power loss values for Mn-Zn ferrite material have been investigated by electrical and magnetic measurements. The ac resistivity shows an inductive dependency on frequency for the low dc resistive samples or for highly dc resistive ones at high temperature, while a capacitive dependency on frequency was observed for the highly resistive materials at the room temperature. These phenomena were interpreted by the dependence of ac resistivity on the dc resistivity, complex permeability and complex permittivity. The dependency of the power losses on the dc resistivity, temperature and frequence were also examined with analysis of power loss term. Dividing the power loss into hysteresis loss and eddy current loss, the frequency dependence of the eddy current loss was found to vary with the magnitude of the dc resistivity as follows: The eddy current loss of low dc resistive materials depends on the dc resistivity. On the other hand, the eddy current loss for high resistive materials is determined by the ac resistivity, contributed from dielectric loss.

    There have been few studies on formal approaches to the specification and realization of asynchronous sequential circuits. For synchronous sequential circuits, an algebraic method is proposed as one of such approaches, but it cannot be applied to asynchronous ones directly. This paper describes an algebraic method of specifying the abstract behavior of asynchronous sequential circuits. We select an daisy chain arbiter as an example of them. In the arbiter, state transitions are caused by input changes, and all the modules do not always make state transitions simultaneously. These are main obstacles to specify it in the same way as sychronous sequential circuits. In order to remove them, we modify the meaning of input in specifications and introduce pseudo state transitions so that we can regard all the modules as if they make state transitions simultaneously. This method can be applied to most of the other asynchronous sequential circuits.

  • A Timing Calibration Technique for High-Speed Memory Test

    This paper describes a new timing calibration method for IC testers that uses a Timing Calibration Device (TCD). The TCD is a chip fabricated using the same process the device to be tested. Since the TCD has the same assignment pins as the LSI memory device under test (called the "MUT"), it enables an IC tester to evaluate the timing accuracy at the input/output terminal of MUT. The block-select-access time of a 1 K ECL RAM, which is less than 3.0 nanoseconds, has been accurately measured using this device. A timing-calibration subsystem is proposed for IC testers as an application of the TCD. Such a device would achieve precise measurement of high-speed LSI memory devices.

    This paper describes the performance evaluation of the Translation Look-aside Buffer (TLB) for highly integrated microprocessors, especially concerning the TLB in the SPARC Reference MMU specification. The analysis covers configurations, the number of entries, and replacement algorithms for the instruction TLB and the data TLB, which are assumed to be practically integrated on one die. We also present performance improvement using a Page Table Cache (PTC). We evaluate some types of TLB configurations with software simulation and excute the Systems Performance Evaluation Cooperative (SPEC) programs.

  • An Acyclic Expansion-Based Protocol Verification for Communications Software

    This paper presents a protocol verification method which verifies that the behaviors of a protocol meet requirements. In this method, a protocol specification is expressed as Extended Finite State Machines (EFSM's) that can handle variables, and requirements are expressed using a branching-time temporal logic for a concise and unambiguous description. Using the acyclic expansion algorithm extended such that it can deal with EFSM's, the verification method first generates a state transition graph consisting of executable transitions for each process. Then a branching-time temporal logic formula representing a requirement is evaluated on one of the generated graphs which is relevant to the requirement. An executable state transition graph for each process is much smaller than a global state transition graph which has been used in the conventional verification techniques to represent the behaviors of the whole protocol system consisting of all processes. The computation for generating the graphs is also reduced to much extent for a large complex protocol. As a result, the presented method achieves efficient verification for requirements regarding a state of a process, transmission and reception of messages by a process, varibales of a process and sequences that interact among processes. The validity of the method is illustrated in the paper by the verification of a path-updating protocol for requirements such as process state reachability or fair termination among processes.

  • Petri Net Based Programming System for FMS

    This paper describes a programming system, K-NET for the development of control software for flexible manufacturing systems composed of robots, numerically-controlled machines, transfer machines and automatic storage/retrieval systems. K-NET is based on a high-level Petri net which makes it simple to express operational functions such as synchronization, interlock and concurrence in sequence control. Petri net in K-NET is colored one in which tokens have attributes, and timed one which can provide a notion of stochastic time. K-NET provides many kinds of boxes having specific functions, and gates specified the firing condition and the token flow control with IF-THEN rules. On the other hand, procedural language can be also used for information processing. K-NET can support all development stages including general design, detailed design, programming and testing. K-NET has an editor to input control specifications expressed with Petri net; a simulator to verify edited specifications; a generator to convert the net to C source programs for a computer or to ladder diagrams for a programmable controller; a reporter to print control specifications; and a monitor to display controller status in real-time. K-NET has been used in the development of control software for an automated guided vehicle system, and results show a 2/3rds cost-saving over development with conventional methods in which only procedural language is used.

  • Optical Receiver and Laser Driver Circuits Implemented with 0.35 µm GaAs JFETs

    We have successfully developed an optical receiver and a laser driver circuit which were implemented with 0.35 µm GaAs JFETs (junction Field Effect Transistors). The 0.35 µm GaAs. JFET had the typical transconductance of 480 mS/mm with small drain conductance. An interdigit MSM (Metal Semiconductor Metal) -type photodetector and the JFETs were monolithically integrated on a GaAs substrate for the optical receiver. The fabricated optical receiver demonstrated Gb/s operation with a very low power consumption of 8.2 mW. The laser driver circuit operated at up to 4.0 Gb/s.

  • Extraction of Behavioral Descriptions from Synchronous Sequential Circuits

    Behavioral extraction from circuit description is a useful technique for logic design verification. We have proposed a technique of extraction from combinational circuits and developed a prototype system. To use this system practically, it is necessary to deal with sequential circuits. In this paper, we will present a new technique to extract behavioral descriptions from synchronous sequential circuits which include some flip-flops. Flip-flops are classified to two types. The one is a part of control registers. The other is a part of data registers. Behavior of the circuit with control registers is described by the state transition. Behavior of the circuit with data registers is described by the movement of data among registers. There are many circuits, as micro processors, which realize a function after some times of state transitions occurred. In such circuits, it is more important to abstract the function than to extract each state transition. We have progressed our system to extract such behaviors.

  • Time and Frequency Domain Design of Approximately Linear Phase IIR Digital Filters

    In most of the methods proposed so far to design approximately linear phase IIR digital filters (IIR DFs), the design takes place only in the time or in the frequency domain. However, when both magnitude and phase responses are considered, IIR DFs with better frequency responses can be obtained if their characteristics in both domains are taken into account. This paper proposes a design method for approximately linear phase IIR DFs, which is based on parameter estimation techniques in the time domain followed by a nonlinear optimization algorithm in the frequency domain. Several examples are presented, illustrating the proposed method.

    This paper describes a VLSI processor architecture designed for a back-propagation accelerator. Three techniques are used to accelerate the simulation. The first is a multi-processor approach where a neural network simulation is suitable for parallel processing. By constructing a ring network using several processors, the simulation speed is multiplied by the number of the processors. The second technique is internal parallel processing. Each processor contains 4 multipliers and 4 ALUs that all work in parallel. The third technique is pipelining. The connections of eight functional units change according to the current stage of the back-propagation algorithm. Intermediate data is sent from one functional unit to another without being stored in extra registers and data is processed in a pipeline manner. The data is in 24-bit floating point format (18-bit mantissa and 6-bit oxponent). The chip has about 88,000 gates, including microcode ROM for processor control, the processor is designed using 0.8-µm CMOS gate arrays, and the estimated performance at 40 MHz is 20 million connection updates per second (MCUPS). For a ring network with 4 processors, performance can be enhanced up to 90 MCUPS.

  • A Conflict Detection Support Method for Telecommunication Service Descriptions

    A conflict detection support method for combining additional telecommunication services with existing services is proposed. In this method, telecommunication services are described by the STR (State Transition Rule) method which specifies a set of state transition rules. Though conflict detection in the past depended on manual analysis by the designer, with this method, conflict candidates are mechanically narrowed down and indicated to the designer. All conflicts between five actual telecommunication service descriptions are detected in an experiment using a system developed in line with the proposed method.

    The purpose of this paper is to propose a technique to simplify the communications software descriptions written in a procedural language in order to enhance their comprehensibility. Although such a technique was not much studied and discussed in the past, this technique is important to realize high productivity and high quality of the communications software by reducing the complexity of the software description. This paper firstly systematically presents various simplification methods with their principles for the descriptions of the communications software from the viewpoints of their layout, syntactical structures etc. Then, it describes a simplification support system based on these principles for the software specifications written in SDL. Lastly, this paper demonstrates the usefulness and effectiveness of the proposed simplification technique by analyzing the evaluation results of the simplification system.

  • An Efficient Hypergraph Bisection Algorithm for Partitioning VLSI Circuits

    This paper presents an efficient heuristic algorithm for min-cut bisection of weighted hypergraphs. The proposed algorithm is based on a heuristic algorithm proposed by Kahng, which was devised for non-weighted hypergraph bisection, adopting a non-weighted graph called intersection graph to represent a given hypergraph. In the proposed algorithm, instead of an intersection graph, a bipartite graph called netgraph is newly introduced to explicitly represent the weights of nodes of a hypergraph. Using the netgraph, it is easy to partition a weighted hypergraph into two hypergraphs with same size. Computation time of the proposed method is O(m2), where m is the number of nodes of a given hypergraph. Experimental results with real circuit data show that the proposed method produces better solutions in shorter computation time compared with existing methods.

  • An Automatic Layout Generator for Bipolar Analog Modules

    An autonatic layout scheme dedicated to bipolar analog modules is described. A layout model is settled in such a way that the VCC/GND line is laid out on top/bottom edge of a rectangular region, within which the whole elements are placed and interconnected. According to this simple modeling, a layout scheme can be constructed of a series of the following algorithms: First clustering is executed for partitioning a given circuit into clusters, each having connections with VCC and GND lines, and then linear ordering is applied to clusters so as to be placed in a one-dimensional array. After a relative placement of circuits elements in each cluster, a block compactor is implemented by means of packing blocks in each cluster into an idle space, and then a detailed router is conducted to attain 100% interconnection. Finally a layout compactor is invoked to pack all layout patterns into a rectangle of the minimum possible area. A number of implementation results are also shown to reveal the practicability of the proposed analog module generator.

  • A Fuzzy-Theoretic Timing Driven Placement Method

    A new algorithm for timing driven placement based on the fuzzy theory is proposed. In this method, the signal delay on the longest path, the chip area and the total wire length can be simultaneously minimized. Introducing the probability measures of fuzzy events, falling down into the local optimal solutions can be avoided. At first, we define the fuzzy placement relation using the graph distance matrix and fuzzy distance relation matrix, and we give a new placement method based on the fuzzy placement relation and the probability measures of fuzzy events. Secondly, we extend this placement method so as to apply to the timing driven placement problem by introducing a fuzzy membership functions which represent the signal delay on the longest path and the chip area. Finally, experimental results are shown to compare our method with one of the previous methods.
