  • Robust, Blindly-Detectable, and Semi-Reversible Technique of Audio Watermarking Based on Cochlear Delay Characteristics

    We previously proposed an inaudible non-blind digital-audio watermarking approach based on cochlear delay (CD) characteristics. There are, however, three remaining issues with regard to blind-detectability, frame synchronization related to confidentiality, and reversibility. We attempted to solve these issues in developing the proposed approach by taking blind-detectability and reversibility of audio watermarking into consideration. Frame synchronization was also incorporated into the proposed approach to improve confidentiality. We evaluated inaudibility, robustness, and reversibility with the new approach by carrying out three objective tests (PEAQ, LSD, and bit-detection or SNR) and six robustness tests. The results revealed that inaudible, robust, blindly-detectable, and semi-reversible watermarking based on CD could be accomplished.

    Primitive linear recurring sequences over rings are important in modern communication technology, and character sums of such sequences are used to analyze their statistical properties. We obtain a new upper bound for the character sum of primitive sequences of order n over the residue ring modulo a square-free odd integer m, and thereby improve previously known bound mn/2.

    This paper reviews several trials of re-designing conventional communication medium, i.e., characters, for enriching their functions by using data-embedding techniques. For example, characters are re-designed to have better machine-readability even under various geometric distortions by embedding a geometric invariant into each character image to represent class label of the character. Another example is to embed various information into handwriting trajectory by using a new pen device, called a data-embedding pen. An experimental result showed that we can embed 32-bit information into a handwritten line of 5 cm length by using the pen device. In addition to those applications, we also discuss the relationship between data-embedding and pattern recognition in a theoretical point of view. Several theories tell that if we have appropriate supplementary information by data-embedding, we can enhance pattern recognition performance up to 100%.

  • A Geometric Sequence Binarized with Legendre Symbol over Odd Characteristic Field and Its Properties

    Let p be an odd characteristic and m be the degree of a primitive polynomial f(x) over the prime field Fp. Let ω be its zero, that is a primitive element in F*pm, the sequence S={si}, si=Tr(ωi) for i=0,1,2,… becomes a non-binary maximum length sequence, where Tr(·) is the trace function over Fp. On this fact, this paper proposes to binarize the sequence by using Legendre symbol. It will be a class of geometric sequences but its properties such as the period, autocorrelation, and linear complexity have not been discussed. Then, this paper shows that the generated binary sequence (geometric sequence by Legendre symbol) has the period n=2(pm-1)/(p-1) and a typical periodic autocorrelation. Moreover, it is experimentally observed that its linear complexity becomes the maximum, that is the period n. Among such experimental observations, especially in the case of m=2, it is shown that the maximum linear complexity is theoretically proven. After that, this paper also demonstrates these properties with a small example.

    Basic block vectorization consists in realizing instruction-level parallelism inside basic blocks in order to generate SIMD instructions and thus speedup data processing. It is however problematic, because the vectorized program may actually be slower than the original one. Therefore, it would be useful to predict beforehand whether or not vectorization will actually produce any speedup. This paper proposes to do so by expressing vectorization profitability as a classification problem, and by predicting it using a machine learning technique called support vector machine (SVM). It considers three compilers (icc, gcc and llvm), and a benchmark suite made of 151 loops, unrolled with factors ranging from 1 to 20. The paper further proposes a technique that combines the results of two SVMs to reach 99% of accuracy for all three compilers. Moreover, by correctly predicting unprofitable vectorizations, the technique presented in this paper provides speedups of up to 2.16 times, 2.47 times and 3.83 times for icc, gcc and LLVM, respectively (9%, 18% and 56% on average). It also lowers to less than 1% the probability of the compiler generating a slower program with vectorization turned on (from more than 25% for the compilers alone).

    Let p be an odd prime such that p ≡ 3 mod 4 and n be an odd positive integer. In this paper, two new families of p-ary sequences of period $N = rac{p^n-1}{2}$ are constructed by two decimated p-ary m-sequences m(2t) and m(dt), where d=4 and d=(pn+1)/2=N+1. The upper bound on the magnitude of correlation values of two sequences in the family is derived by using Weil bound. Their upper bound is derived as $ rac{3}{sqrt{2}} sqrt{N+ rac{1}{2}}+ rac{1}{2}$ and the family size is 4N, which is four times the period of the sequence.

    This paper proposes a sector base station antenna for mobile wireless communication systems employing multiple woodpile metamaterial reflectors and a multiband radiator that establishes the same beamwidth in the horizontal plane for more than two frequency bands. Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) characteristics of each metamaterial reflector can be controlled through structural parameters of the woodpile reflector, e.g., the rod width and rod spacing. As an example of the proposed antenna, a design for a triple-frequency-band antenna that radiates at 800 MHz, 2,GHz, and 4,GHz is shown. The algorithm used to adjust the beamwidth of the proposed antenna is newly introduced and adjusts the beamwidth to be the same for each band using the rod width of the woodpile. A prototype of the proposed antenna has the approximately 90$^{circ}$ beamwidth in the horizontal plane at the three frequencies, and the measurement results agree well with the electromagnetic field simulation results.

    The higher-order characteristic basis function method (HO-CBFM) is clearly formulated. HO-CBFM provides results accurately even if a block division is arbitrary. The HO-CBFM combined with a volume integral equation (VIE) is used in the analysis of various antennas in the vicinity of a dielectric object. The results of the numerical analysis show that the HO-CBFM can reduce the CPU time while still achieving the desired accuracy.

    When ultra-high-frequency (UHF) method is applied in partial discharge (PD) detection for GIS, the propagation process and rules of electromagnetic (EM) wave need to be understood clearly for conducting diagnosis and assessment about the real insulation status. The preceding researches are mainly concerning about the radial component of the UHF signal, but the propagation of the signal components in axial and radial directions and that perpendicular to the radial direction of the GIS tank are rarely considered. So in this paper, for a 252,kV GIS with T-shaped structure (TS), the propagation and attenuation of PD-induced EM wave in different circumferential angles and directions are investigated profoundly in time and frequency domain based on Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method. The attenuation rules of the peak to peak value (Vpp) and cumulative energy are concluded. By comparing the results of straight branch and T branch, the influence of T-shaped structure over the propagation of different signal components are summarized. Moreover, the new circumferential and axial location methods proposed in the previous work are verified to be still applicable. This paper discusses the propagation mechanism of UHF signal in T-shaped tank, which provides some referential significance towards the utilization of UHF technique and better implementation of PD detection.

    To improve throughput of Electron Beam Direct Writing (EBDW) with Character Projection (CP) method, a structured routing architecture (SRA) has been proposed to restrict VIA placement and wire-track transition. It reduces possible layout patterns in the interconnect layers, and increases VIA and metal figure numbers in the EB shots while suppressing the CP character number explosion. In this paper, we discuss details of the SRA design methodology, and demonstrate the CP performance by SRA in comparison with other EBDW techniques. Our experimental results show viable CP performance for practical use, and prove SRA's feasibility in 14nm mass fabrication.

    This paper tries to model spatial layout beyond the traditional spatial pyramid (SP) in the coding/pooling scheme for scene text character recognition. Specifically, we propose a novel method to build a dictionary called spatiality embedded dictionary (SED) in which each codeword represents a particular character stroke and is associated with a local response region. The promising results outperform other state-of-the-art algorithms.

    In this paper, we propose a representation method based on local spatial strokes for scene character recognition. High-level semantic information, namely co-occurrence of several strokes is incorporated by learning a sparse dictionary, which can further restrain noise brought by single stroke detectors. The encouraging results outperform state-of-the-art algorithms.

    This paper addresses the problems of fingerprint identification and verification when a query fingerprint is taken under conditions that differ from those under which the fingerprint of the same person stored in a database was constructed. This occurs when using a different fingerprint scanner with a different pressure, resulting in a fingerprint impression that is smeared and distorted in accordance with a geometric transformation (e.g., affine or even non-linear). Minutiae points on a query fingerprint are matched and aligned to those on one of the fingerprints in the database, using a set of absolute invariants constructed from the shape and/or size of minutiae triangles depending on the assumed map. Once the best candidate match is declared and the corresponding minutiae points are flagged, the query fingerprint image is warped against the candidate fingerprint image in accordance with the estimated warping map. An identification/verification cost function using a combination of distance map and global directional filterbank (DFB) features is then utilized to verify and identify a query fingerprint against candidate fingerprint(s). Performance of the algorithm yields an area of 0.99967 (perfect classification is a value of 1) under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve based on a database consisting of a total of 1680 fingerprint images captured from 240 fingers. The average probability of error was found to be 0.713%. Our algorithm also yields the smallest false non-match rate (FNMR) for a comparable false match rate (FMR) when compared to the well-known technique of DFB features and triangulation-based matching integrated with modeling non-linear deformation. This work represents an advance in resolving the fingerprint identification problem beyond the state-of-the-art approaches in both performance and robustness.

    This paper is concerned with a method to reduce the computation time of the Discrete Ray Tracing Method (DRTM) which was proposed to numerically analyze electromagnetic fields above Random Rough Surfaces (RRSs). The essence of DRTM is firstly to search rays between source and receiver and secondly to compute electric fields based on the traced rays. In the DRTM, the method discretizes not only RRSs but also ray tracing procedure. In order to reduce computation time for ray searching, the authors propose to modify the conventional algorithm discretizing RRSs with equal intervals to a new one which discretizes them with unequal intervals according to their profiles. The authors also use an approximation of Fresnel function which enables us to reduce field computation time. The authors discuss the reduction rate for computation time of the DRTM from the numerical view points of ray searching and field computation. Finally, this paper shows how much computation time is reduced by the new method.

    This paper presents an experimental evaluation of an ocean wave remote sensing system that uses bistatic GPS signal reflection to estimate wave characteristics. In our previous paper, a bistatic ocean wave remote sensing system by GPS was proposed to estimate the characteristics of sea swell near a harbor, and was also evaluated by numerical simulations. In the next phase, a prototype system has been developed and some basic experiments have been carried out in a coastal area in order to evaluate the system experimentally. In this paper, we will outline the prototype system. The system mainly consists of an array antenna, a front-end, and an estimator for ocean wave characteristics. Next, we explain that the estimator for ocean wave characteristics can identify each signal reflected from the ocean waves. Finally, the experiments show that the prototype system can receive the reflected signals from the sea-surface near the coast, and estimate the wave period and wavelength in the direction of the array antenna.

    We propose a parallel pth powering method over an arbitrary finite field GF(pm). Using the proposed method, we present the explicit formulae for the computation of cubing over a ternary field GF(3m) which is defined by irreducible trinomials. We show that the field cubing computation for irreducible trinomials, which plays an important role in calculating pairing, can be implemented very efficiently.

    Character projection (CP) is a high-speed mask-less exposure technique for electron-beam direct writing (EBDW). In CP exposure of VIA layers, higher throughput is realized if more VIAs are exposed in each EB shot, but it will result in huge number of VIA characters to cover arbitrary VIA arrangements. We adopt one-dimensional VIA arrays as the basic CP character architecture to increase VIA numbers in an EB shot while saving the stencil area by superposed character arrangement. In addition, CP throughput is further improved by layout constraints on the VIA placement in the detail routing phase. Our experimental results proved the feasibility of our exposure strategy in the practical CP use in 14nm lithography.

  • A Robust Signal Recognition Method for Communication System under Time-Varying SNR Environment

    As a consequence of recent developments in communications, the parameters of communication signals, such as the modulation parameter values, are becoming unstable because of time-varying SNR under electromagnetic conditions. In general, it is difficult to classify target signals that have time-varying parameters using traditional signal recognition methods. To overcome this problem, this study proposes a novel recognition method that works well even for such time-dependent communication signals. This method is mainly composed of feature extraction and classification processes. In the feature extraction stage, we adopt Shannon entropy and index entropy to obtain the stable features of modulated signals. In the classification stage, the interval gray relation theory is employed as suitable for signals with time-varying parameter spaces. The advantage of our method is that it can deal with time-varying SNR situations, which cannot be handled by existing methods. The results from numerical simulation show that the proposed feature extraction algorithm, based on entropy characteristics in time-varying SNR situations,offers accurate clustering performance, and the classifier, based on interval gray relation theory, can achieve a recognition rate of up to 82.9%, even when the SNR varies from -10 to -6 dB.

    To handle the variety of scene characters, we propose a cooperative multiple-hypothesis framework which consists of an image operator set module, an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) module and an integration module. Multiple image operators activated by multiple parameters probe suspected character regions. The OCR module is then applied to each suspected region and returns multiple candidates with weight values for future integration. Without the aid of the heuristic rules which impose constraints on segmentation area, aspect ratio, color consistency, text line orientations, etc., the integration module automatically prunes the redundant detection/recognition and pads the missing detection/recognition. The proposed framework bridges the gap between scene character detection and recognition, in the sense that a practical OCR engine is effectively leveraged for result refinement. In addition, the proposed method achieves the detection and recognition at the character level, which enables dealing with special scenarios such as single character, text along arbitrary orientations or text along curves. We perform experiments on the benchmark ICDAR 2011 Robust Reading Competition dataset which includes a text localization task and a word recognition task. The quantitative results demonstrate that multiple hypotheses outperform a single hypothesis, and be comparable with state-of-the-art methods in terms of recall, precision, F-measure, character recognition rate, total edit distance and word recognition rate. Moreover, two additional experiments are conducted to confirm the simplicity of parameter setting in this proposal.

    In this letter, a property of the characteristic matrix of the Rotation Symmetric Boolean Functions (RSBFs) is characterized, and a sufficient and necessary condition for RSBFs being 1st correlation-immune (1-CI for simplicity) is obtained. This property is applied to construct resilient RSBFs of order 1 (1-resilient for simplicity) on pq variables, where p and q are both prime consistently in this letter. The results show that construction and counting of 1-resilient RSBFs on pq variables are equivalent to solving an equation system and counting the solutions. At last, the counting of all 1-resilient RSBFs on pq variables is also proposed.
