  • Stability and Adaptability of Autonomous Decentralized Flow Control in High-Speed Networks

    This paper focuses on flow control in high-speed networks. Each node in a network handles its local traffic flow on the basis of only the information it is aware of, but it is preferable that the decision-making of each node leads to high performance of the whole network. To this end, we investigate the relationship between the flow control mechanism of each node and network performance. We consider the situation in which the capacity of a link in the network is changed but individual nodes are not aware of this. Then we investigate the stability and adaptability of the network performance, and discuss an appropriate flow control model on the basis of simulation results.

  • Automated Edge Detection by a Fuzzy Morphological Gradient

    Edge detection has been an essential step in image processing, and there has been much work undertaken to date. This paper inspects a fuzzy mathematical morphology in order to reach a higher-level of edge-image processing. The proposed scheme uses a fuzzy morphological gradient to detect object boundaries, when the boundaries are roughly defined as a curve or a surface separating homogeneous regions. The automatic edge detection algorithm consists of two major steps. First, a new version of anisotropic diffusion is proposed for edge detection and image restoration. All improvements of the new version use fuzzy mathematical morphology to preserve the edge accuracy and to restore the images to homogeneity. Second, the fuzzy morphological gradient operation detects the step edges between the homogeneous regions as object boundaries. This operation uses geometrical characteristics contained in the structuring element in order to extract the edge features in the set of edgeness, a set consisting of the quality values of the edge pixels. This set is prepared with fuzzy logic for decision and selection of authentic edge pixels. For experimental results, the proposed method has been tested successfully with both synthetic and real pictures.

  • Low-Temperature MBE Growth of a TlGaAs/GaAs Multiple Quantum-Well Structure

    A TlGaAs/GaAs multiple quantum-well (MQW) structure having four identical well layers was grown on a GaAs (001) substrate by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) at 190. The (004) X-ray diffraction (XRD) curve of this sample showed satellite peaks up to the 3rd order at least. The measured XRD curve agreed well with the theoretically simulated one with a Tl content of x=7% and a width of 57 for the TlxGa1-xAs well layers. This result indicates that the grown MQW structure has good single-crystalline quality as well as flat and sharp interfaces.

    In this paper, a new Hierarchical Sum of Double Difference metric, HSDD, is introduced. It is shown, as opposed to conventional Sum of Absolute Difference (SAD) metric, how this zerotree coding aware metric can jointly constrain the motion vector searching for both temporal and spatial (quad-tree) directions under multiresolution motion estimation framework. The reward from the temporal-spatial co-optimization concept of HSDD is that fewer bits are spent later for describing the isolated zeros. The embedded wavelet video coder using HSDD metric was tested with a set of video sequences and the compression performance seems to be promising.

  • Novel H-Shape Element for the Sandwich Photonic Bandgap Structure

    A novel periodic element for the sandwich photonic bandgap (PBG) structure named as H-shape element is presented in this paper. Sandwich PBG structure is a kind of PBG structure whose periodic lattice is buried in the midmost of the substrate. There's no requirement to drill or suspend the substrate. The new H-shape element is made of a central block connected with a long and narrow block on either side, and possesses a quite deep forbidden gap, whose width and depth can be tuned by varying the dimension of the central block. Theoretical results, as confirmed experimentally, indicate that the maximum insertion loss in the stopband is up to 80 dB. This sandwich microstrip structure can be constructed using conventional printed-circuit-board fabrication processes and integrated with other microwave components in a multilayered circuit. An improved notch filter with chirped central blocks is presented. The length of the filter is reduced by 16.7%, and the fractional bandwidth is increased by 8.1% compared with that of a conventional sandwich microstrip notch filter on the same substrate. The experimental results agree well with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations.

    The file sizes of on going flows are fairly disparate on the current network. In this letter, we propose an "age-based" packet discard scheme in the Traffic Conditioner (TC) of a gateway to improve the performance of file transmission. The on going flows will be grouped to three classes of priority according to their "age" as network congestion occurs and the simulation results show that the proposed model can work efficiently in most of the congestion conditions.

  • Fingerprint Restoration Using Digital Reaction-Diffusion System and Its Evaluation

    This paper presents an algorithm for fingerprint image restoration using Digital Reaction-Diffusion System (DRDS). The DRDS is a model of a discrete-time discrete-space nonlinear reaction-diffusion dynamical system, which is useful for generating biological textures, patterns and structures. This paper focuses on the design of a fingerprint restoration algorithm that combines (i) a ridge orientation estimation technique using an iterative coarse-to-fine processing strategy and (ii) an adaptive DRDS having a capability of enhancing low-quality fingerprint images using the estimated ridge orientation. The phase-only image matching technique is employed for evaluating the similarity between an original fingerprint image and a restored image. The proposed algorithm may be useful for person identification applications using fingerprint images.

    In this paper, we propose a scalable Extended Differentiated-Services (EDS) architecture to guarantee edge-to-edge explicit rate allocation. In presence of flows with explicit rate allocation, to share bandwidth fairly, a new fairness definition is proposed. Based on EDS and the proposed fairness definition, a scalable fair Edge-to-Edge Congestion Control Algorithm with Explicit Rate Allocation (ECC-ERA) is presented to solve the bandwidth assurance problem facing Differentiated Service architecture, where EDS uses congestion control packets to carry the flow-related states and congestion control information. By designing efficiency control and fairness control separately, the ECC-ERA can achieve good scalability to link capacity, round-trip time and number of flows. It will be shown that EDS plus ECC-ERA outperforms the general Diff-Serv bandwidth guarantee approaches. The main advantages of EDS+ECC-ERA are as follows: (1) it not only can guarantee explicit rate allocation, but also can guarantee near-zero packet loss in core routers, high utilization, lower and smoother queueing delay, better fairness and better protection from unresponsive traffic. (2) Neither resource pre-reservation nor sophisticated scheduling mechanisms are required. The simple FIFO at core routers is enough. (3) EDS plus EC-ERA is very efficient and can be used as end-to-end QoS building block.

    Recently, we have discovered wave propagation phenomena which are continuously existing waves of changing phase states between two adjacent oscillators from in-phase to anti-phase or from anti-phase to in-phase in van der Pol oscillators coupled by inductors as a ladder. We named the phenomena as "phase-inversion waves." In this study, phase-inversion waves which exist in the state of in-and-anti-phase synchronization have been found. We observe the phenomena by circuit experiments and computer calculations, and investigate them.

  • Local Structure of Gaussian Texture

    The joint histogram of second order scale space differential invariants of natural images (including textures) is typically clustered about parabolic surface patches, whereas symmetrical elliptical patches (local convexities or concavities) are very rare and symmetrical hyperbolical patches also occur less frequently than parabolic patches. We trace the origin of this striking effect in the context of Gaussian random noise. For this case one may derive the joint histogram of curvedness and shape index analytically. The empirical observations are fully corroborated. In deriving these results we introduce a polar coordinate system in the space of second order scale space derivatives that turns out to be particularly useful in the study of the statistics of local curvature properties. The empirical observations apply also to non-Gaussian noise (e.g., Brownian noise) as well as to photographs of natural scenes. We discuss general arguments that help explain these observations.

    In the study, we build a system called Adaptive Visual Attentive Tracker (AVAT) for the purpose of developing a non-verbal communication channel between the system and an operator who presents intended movements. In the system, we constructed an HMM (Hidden Markov Models)-based TD (Temporal Difference) learning algorithm to track and zoom in on an operator's behavioral sequence which represents his/her intention. AVAT extracts human intended movements from ordinary walking behavior based on the following two algorithms: the first is to model the movements of human body parts using HMMs algorithm, and the second is to learn the model of the tracker's action using a model-based TD learning algorithm. In the paper, we describe the integrated algorithm of the above two methods: whose linkage is established by assigning the state transition probability in HMM as a reward in TD learning. Experimental results of extracting an operator's hand sign action sequence during her natural walking motion are shown which demonstrates the function of AVAT as it is developed within the framework of perceptual organization. Identification of the sign gesture context through wavelet analysis autonomously provides a reward value for optimizing AVAT's action patterns.

  • A Simple Modeling Technique for Symmetric Inductors

    A simple modeling technique for symmetric inductors is proposed. Using the proposed technique, all model parameters for an equivalent circuit of symmetric inductors are easily calculated from geometric, process and substrate resistance parameters without using electromagnetic (EM) simulators. Comparison of simulated results with measured results verifies the effectiveness of the proposed modeling technique up to 5 GHz with center-tapped or non-center-tapped configurations.

  • Wave Scattering from a Finite Periodic Surface: Spectral Formalism for TE Wave

    This paper deals with the wave scattering from a periodic surface with finite extent. Modifying a spectral formalism, we find that the spectral amplitude of the scattered wave can be determined by the surface field on only the corrugated part of the surface. The surface field on such a corrugated part is then expanded into Fourier series with unknown Fourier coefficients. A matrix equation for the Fourier coefficients is obtained and is solved numerically for a sinusoidally corrugated surface. Then, the angular distribution of the scattering, the relative power of each diffraction beam and the optical theorem are calculated and illustrated in figures. Also, the relative powers of diffraction are calculated against the angle of incidence for a periodic surface with infinite extent. By comparing a finite periodic case with an infinite periodic case, it is pointed out that relative powers of diffraction beam are much similar in these of diffraction for the infinite periodic case.

  • Sliding Multiple Phase Differential Detection of Trellis-Coded MDPSK-OFDM

    In this paper, the Viterbi decoder containing new branch metrics of the squared Euclidean distance with multiple order phase differences is introduced in order to improve the bit error rate (BER) in the differential detection of the trellis-coded MDPSK-OFDM. The proposed Viterbi decoder is conceptually same as the sliding multiple phase differential detection method that uses the branch metric with multiple phase differences. Also, we describe the Viterbi algorithm in order to use this branch metrics. Our study shows that such a Viterbi decoder improves BER performance without sacrificing bandwidth and power efficiency. Also, the proposed algorithm can be used in the single carrier modulation.

    Many congestion control mechanisms have been proposed to solve the problems of a high loss rate and inefficient utilization of network resources in the present Internet. This problem is caused by competition between traffic flows while the network is congested. Differentiated Services (DiffServ) architecture permits the allocation of various levels of traffic resource requirements needed for Quality of Service (QoS). Random Early Detection (RED) is an efficient mechanism to pre-drop packets before actual congestion occurs, and it is capable of introducing a random early packet dropping scheme, and based on the queue length in reaching a certain degree of fairness for resource utilization. However, it still suffers from a lack of robustness among light traffic load, or in heavy traffic load using fixed RED parameters. In this paper, we modified the RED scheme and proposed a novel adaptive RED model, which we named the OURED model, to enhance the robustness of resource utilization so that it could be utilized in the DiffServ edge router. The OURED model introduces two additional packet dropping traces, one is Over Random Early Detection (ORED), which is used to speed up the dropping of packets when the actual rate is higher than the target rate, and the other one is the Under Random Early Detection (URED), used to slow down the packet dropping rate in the reverse situation. The simulation results show that OURED is not only more robust than MRED in resource utilization, but that it also can be implement efficiently in the DiffServ edge router.

  • Wireless Delay Proportional Service (WDPS) Scheduling Algorithm for Differentiated Service in Wireless Networks with Location-Dependent Errors

    This paper proposes a wireless scheduling algorithm that can provide the Internet with delay proportional differentiated services in wireless networks. When considering wireless network environments that include burst and location-dependent channel errors, the proposed WDPS (Wireless Delay Proportional Service) scheduling algorithm can adaptively serve packets in class queues based on the delivered delay performance for each class. The significant characteristics of the WDPS scheduler include support for a fair relative delay service, the provision of graceful throughput and delay compensations, and the avoidance of class queue-blocking problems. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can achieve the desirable properties for providing delay proportional services in wireless networks.

    In this letter, we investigate a diversity scheme which employs a simple transform, symbol interleaving and decision-feedback differential detection (DF-DD) for differential phase-shift-keying signal transmission over correlated Rayleigh fading. The proposed scheme merits instinct time diversity within each transmitted block and thus presents patent resistance to fading. It is shown that the considered technique provides significant diversity gains in a correlated Rayleigh fading channel.

    In this letter, we propose a frequency domain active noise control system using the time difference simultaneous perturbation method. This method is an algorithm based on the simultaneous perturbation method which updates the coefficients of the noise control filter only by use of the error signal. The time difference simultaneous perturbation method updates the filter coefficients by using one kind of error signal, while the simultaneous perturbation method updates the filter coefficients by using two kinds of error signal. In the ANC systems, the time difference simultaneous perturbation method is superior because ANC systems cannot obtain two error signals at the same time. When this method is applied to ANC systems, the convergence speed can be increased to a maximum of twice that of the conventional method.

    In this study, wave propagation phenomena of phase differences observed in van der Pol oscillators coupled by inductors as a ladder are investigated. The phenomena are called "phase waves. " We classify the observed phenomena and analyze the difference in detail. We observe that the behavior of the phase waves generated by giving a phase difference of positive value is different from the behavior of those generated by giving a phase difference of negative value. We can also observe the generation of two pairs of phase waves. We clarify the mechanisms of these complicated phenomena. Finally, for the case of nine oscillators, we carry out both computer calculations and circuit experiments. Circuit experimental results agree well with computer calculated results qualitatively.

    An 8-bit 200 MS/s CMOS 2-stage cascaded folding/interpolating ADC chip was implemented by applying a resistor averaging/interpolating scheme at the preamplifier outputs and the differential circuits for the encoder logic block, with a 0.35-µm double-poly CMOS process. The number of preamplifiers was reduced to half by using an averaging technique with a resistor array at the preamplifier outputs. The delay time of digital encoder block was reduced from 2.2 ns to 1.3 ns by replacing the standard CMOS logic with DCVSPG and CPL differential circuits. The measured SFDR was 42.5 dB at the sampling rate of 200 MS/s for the 10.072 MHz sinusoidal input signal.
