With the knowledge of the syndromes Sa,b, 0a,b q-2, the exact error values cannot be determined by using the conventional (q-1)2-point discrete Fourier transform in the decoding of a plane algebraic-geometric code over GF(q). In this letter, the inverse q-point 1-dimensional and q2-point 2-dimensional affine Fourier transform over GF(q) are presented to be used to retrieve the actual error values, but it requires much computation efforts. For saving computation complexity, a modification of the affine Fourier transform is derived by using the property of the rational points of the plane Hermitian curve. The modified transform, which has almost the same computation complexity of the conventional discrete Fourier transform, requires the knowledge of syndromes Sa,b, 0 a,b q-2, and three more extended syndromes Sq-1,q-1, S0,q-1, Sq-1,0.

Multimedia communications over mobile networks suffer from fluctuating channel degradation. Conventional error handling schemes consist of the first stage error correction decoding in wireless interface and the second stage error correction decoding in multimedia demultiplexer, where the second stage decoding result is not used to improve the first stage decoding performance. To meet the requirements of more powerful error protection, we propose iterative soft-input/soft-output error correction decoding in multimedia communications, where the likelihood output generated by the error correction decoding in multimedia demultiplexer is fed back to the decoding in wireless interface and the decoding procedure is iterated. The performances were evaluated by MPEG-4 video transmission simulation over mobile channels.

Motivated by intention to evaluate asymptotically multiple-burst-error-correcting codes on channels with memory, we will derive the following fact. Let {Zi } be a hidden Markov process, i. e. , a functional of a Markov chain with a finite state space, and Wb(Z1Z2Zn) denote the number of burst errors that appear in Z1Z2Zn, where the number of burst errors is counted using Gabidulin's burst metric , 1971. As the main result, we will prove the almost sure convergence of relative burst weight Wb(Z1Z2Zn)/n, i. e. , the relative frequency of occurrence of burst errors, for a broad class of functionals { Zi } of finite Markov chains. Functionals of Markov chains are often adopted as models of the noises on channels, especially on burst-noise channels, the most famous model of which is probably the Gilbert channel proposed in 1960. Those channel models described with Markov chains are called channels with memory (including channels with zero-memory, i. e. , memoryless ones). This work's achievement enables us to extend Gilbert's code performance evaluation in 1952, a landmark that offered the well-known Gilbert bound, discussed its relationship to the (memoryless) binary symmetric channel, and has been serving as a guide for the-Hamming-metric-based design of error-correcting codes, to the case of the-burst-metric-based codes (burst-error-correcting codes) and discrete channels with or without memory.

The additive noise response of a charge pump phase-locked loop in the synchronous mode of operation has been studied. In order to determine the tracking and noise performances of the loop, mean square values of tracking error and local oscillator phase jitter have been analytically obtained. Analytical results agree well with the simulation results obtained here and elsewhere. The analysis performed can be used in choosing different system parameters for optimum system operation.

Though considerable effort has recently been devoted to hardware realization of one-dimensional chaotic systems, the influence of implementation inaccuracies is often underestimated and limited to non-idealities in the non-linear map. Here we investigate the consequences of sample-and-hold errors. Two degrees of freedom in the design space are considered: the choice of the map and the sample-and-hold architecture. Current-mode systems based on Bernoulli Shift, on Tent Map and on Tailed Tent Map are taken into account and coupled with an order-one model of sample-and-hold to ascertain error causes and suggest implementation improvements.

Shared buffer ATM switches have been attractive since they can achieve a superior performance in terms of cell loss ratio and throughput with a relatively small buffer size. Shared multi-buffer structures have also been considered by several researchers to enhance the access speed of the cell memory for a large switch. High quality services, however, cannot be provided without reliable operation at each module comprising the ATM switches. In this paper, we present a novel on-line error monitoring technique for shared-buffer ATM switches. The technique detects almost all of the functional errors that could occur in the ATM switches. Moreover, it can detect errors with small hardware overhead and negligible time overhead. An early detection of functional errors in ATM switches could not only reduce the wasted bandwidth due to the transmission of erroneous cells, but greatly enhance the recovery time.

In this paper, the performance of some communication systems using chaos synchronization is evaluated and compared. A new channel model taking the attenuation, impedance mismatch and noise into account, is proposed for the performance evaluation. The evaluation of bit error rate is done for both ideal and non-ideal conditions using the channel model. It is confirmed that some chaos-based communication systems have a good performance compared with conventional analog communication schemes.

We propose a new associative memory named Multi-Winner Associative Memory (MWAM) and study its bidirectional association properties in this paper. The proposed MWAM has two processes for pattern pairs storage: storage process and recall process. For the storage process, the proposed MWAM can represent a half of pattern pair in the distributed representation layer and can store the correspondence of pattern and its representation using the upward weights. In addition, the MWAM can store the correspondence of the distributed representation and the other half of pattern pair in the downward weights. For the recall process, the MWAM can recall information bidirectionally: a half of the stored pattern pair can be recalled by receiving the other half in the input-output layer for any stored pattern pairs.

Multi-ary Trellis-Coded Modulation (TCM) schemes have been studied for use with digital radio communication systems. Among these TCM schemes, we have already reported the optimum signal constellation of a rate-3/4 trellis-coded (TC) 16-ary Amplitude and Phase Shift Keying (APSK) scheme and computed the minimum Euclidean distance: dfree. In this paper, we evaluate other performance parameters: Nfree and bit error rate (BER) over an additive white Gaussian noise channel, and further investigate the various signal constellations of rate-4/5 TC 32-APSK schemes. It is found that the BER performances of circular-type signal constellations are superior to that of rectangular-type in the TC 16-APSK, and a (24,8) circular type signal constellation is superior to other constellations in the TC 32-APSK.

In wireless ATM networks, the condition of the transmission channel fluctuates significantly as a result of many causes such as multipath, shadow phasing, and so forth. Several schemes have been proposed to take care of transmission errors. Some schemes are suitable for favorable channel conditions, while others are more suitable for unfavorable channel conditions. Thus, using a fixed error control scheme regardless of channel conditions is destined to be inefficient. This paper presents a dynamic error control scheme that dynamically selects an appropriate error control scheme according to the conditions of the transmission channel. Using this method, we can decrease both errors and the overhead of redundancy.

An upper bound on frame error rate (FER) for generalized concatenated convolutional codes (GCCC's) with iterative decoding is presented. The GCCC is a generalized concatenated code which consists of an inner binary convolutional code and outer Reed-Solomon codes. The FER bound is derived from the average weight enumerator of the inner code. We can optimize the configuration of the outer code since the FER bound can be easily computed. Some optimum outer code profiles will be shown. The results show that combination of GCCC and iterative decoding attains fairly small frame error probability (PB 10-13, Eb/N0 = 6 dB) with relatively simple component code (16-state convolutional code and Reed-Solomon code of length 32).

The characteristics of the decision feedback carrier recovery loop (DFL) for conventional QPSK signaling is evaluated experimentally through measurements of the carrier-to-noise ratio of the regenerated carrier, lock range, acquisition waveforms and bit error rates. The results show that the DFL hardly exhibits inferiority to the ideal synchronization by designing the loop natural frequency adequately small. The DFL is shown superb in carrier tracking.

Secret information stored in a tamperfree device is revealed during the decryption or signature generation processes due to fault-based attack. In this paper, based on the coding approach, we propose a new fault-resistant system which enables any fault existing in modular multiplication and exponentiation computations to be detected with a very high probability. The proposed method can be used to implement all crypto-schemes whose basic operations are modular multiplications for resisting both memory and computational fault-based attacks with a very low computational overhead.

This paper treats a fault detection/location of multi-processor systems, and we present a checking scheme based on Modified Processor-Data (MPD) graph with considering an error generation/propagation model for Algorithm-Based Fault Tolerant (ABFT) systems. The error propagation model considered here allows a computation result with multiple (more than one) erroneous inputs to be either erroneous or error-free. Also a basic algorithm for constructing checks for single-fault locatable/two-fault detectable ABFT systems based on the checking scheme is described with design examples.

    958-964

In this paper an analysis on the oversampling data recovery circuit is presented. The input waveform is assumed to be non-return-zero (NRZ) binary signals. A finite Markov chain model is used to evaluate the steady-state phase jitter performance. Theoretical analysis enables us to predict the input signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) versus bit error rate (BER) of the oversampling data recovery circuit for various oversampling ratios. The more number of samples per single bit results in the better performance on BER at the same input SNR. To achieve 10-11 BER, 8 times oversampling has about 2 dB input signal penalty compared to 16 times oversampling. In an architectural choice of the oversampling data recovery circuit, the recovered clock can be updated in each data bit or in every multiple bits depending on the input data rate and input noise. Two different clock update schemes were analyzed and compared. The scheme updating clock in every data bit has about 1.5 dB penalty against the multiple bits (4 bits) clock updating scheme with 16 times oversampling in white noise dominant input data. The results were applied to the fabricated circuits to validate the analysis.

In this paper, near real time digital radiography system was implemented for the automatic verification of local errors between simulation plan and radiation therapy. Portal image could be acquired through video camera, image board and PC after therapy radiation was converted into light by a metal/fluorescent screen. Considering the divergence according to the distance between the source and the plate, we made a 340 340 12 cm3 basis point plate on which five rods of 4 cm height and 8 mm diameter lead (Pb) were built to display reference points on the simulator and the portal image. We converted the portal image into the binary image using the optimal threshold value which was gotten through the histogram analysis of the acquired portal image using the basis point plate. we got the location information of the iso-center and basis points from the binary image, and removed the systematic errors which were from the differences between the simulation plan and the portal image. Field size which was measured automatically by optimal threshold portal image, was verified with simulation plan. Anatomic errors were automatically detected and verified with the normalized simulation and the portal image by pattern matching method after irradiating a part of the radiation. Therapy efficiency was improved and radiation side effects were reduced by these techniques, so exact radiation treatment are expected.

This paper proposes an analysis method of the roundoff error due to finite-wordlength decoding in fractal image coding. The proposed method can be applied to large images such as 256 256 or 512 512 images because it needs no complex matrix computation. The simplified model used here ignores the effect of decimation ratio on the roundoff error because it is negligible. As an analysis result, the proposed method gives the output error variance which consists of grey-tone scaling coefficients and an iteration number. This method is tested on various types of 12 standard images which have 256 256 size or 512 512 size with 256 grey levels. Comparisons of simulation results with analysis results are given. The results show that our analysis method is valid for the fractal image coding.

This paper describes the error probability of the second order BAM estimated by a computer simulation and an analytical calculation method. The computer simulation suggests that the iterations to retrieve a library pattern almost converge within four times and the difference between once and twice is much larger than that between twice and four times. The error probability at the output of the second iteration is estimated by the analytical method. The effect of the noise bits is also estimated using the analytical method. The BAM with larger n is more robust for the noise. For example, the noise bits of 0.15n cause almost no degradation of the error probability when n is larger than 100. If the error probability of 10-4 is allowable, the capacity of the second order BAM can be increased by about 40% in the presence of 0.15n noise bits when n is larger than 500.
