  • Mining Knowledge on Relationships between Objects from the Web

    How do global warming and agriculture influence each other? It is possible to answer the question by searching knowledge about the relationship between global warming and agriculture. As exemplified by this question, strong demands exist for searching relationships between objects. Mining knowledge about relationships on Wikipedia has been studied. However, it is desired to search more diverse knowledge about relationships on the Web. By utilizing the objects constituting relationships mined from Wikipedia, we propose a new method to search images with surrounding text that include knowledge about relationships on the Web. Experimental results show that our method is effective and applicable in searching knowledge about relationships. We also construct a relationship search system named “Enishi” based on the proposed new method. Enishi supplies a wealth of diverse knowledge including images with surrounding text to help users to understand relationships deeply, by complementarily utilizing knowledge from Wikipedia and the Web.

    This paper describes low-power dynamic multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) detection for a 4×4 MIMO-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) receiver. MIMO-OFDM systems achieve high-speed and large capacity communications. However, they impose high computational cost in MIMO detection when separating spatially multiplexed signals and they consume vast amounts of power. We propose low-power dynamic MIMO detection that controls detection speed according to wireless environments. The power consumption is reduced by dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) that controls the operating voltage and clock frequency in the MIMO detector. We implemented dynamic MIMO detection in a pipelined minimum mean square error (MMSE) MIMO detector that we developed in our previous work. A power saving of 92% was achieved under lowest clock frequency mode conditions.

    We theoretically study the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) free-space optical (FSO) systems using subcarrier quadrature modulation (SC-QAM) signaling. The system average symbol-error rate (ASER) is derived taking into account the atmospheric turbulence effects on the MIMO/FSO channel, which is modeled by log-normal and the gamma-gamma distributions for weak and moderate-to-strong turbulence conditions. We quantitatively discuss the influence of index of refraction structure parameter, link distance, and different MIMO configurations on the system ASER. We also analytically derive and discuss the MIMO/FSO average (ergodic) channel capacity (ACC), which is expressed in terms of average spectral efficiency (ASE), under the impact of various channel conditions. Monte Carlo simulations are also performed to validate the mathematical analysis, and a good agreement between numerical and simulation results is confirmed.

    The long-term degradation due to aging such as NBTI (Negative Bias Temperature Instability) is a hot issue in the current circuit design using nanometer process technologies, since it causes a delay fault in the field. In order to resolve the problem, we must estimate delay variation caused by long-term degradation in design stage, but over estimation must be avoided so as to make timing design easier. If we can treat such a variation statistically, and if we treat it together with delay variations due to process variability, then we can reduce over margin in timing design. Moreover, such a statistical static timing analyzer treating process variability and long-term degradation together will help us to select an appropriate set of paths for which field testing are conducted to detect delay faults. In this paper, we propose a new delay model with a half triangular distribution, which is introduced for handling a random factor with unknown distribution such as long term degradation. Then, we show an algorithm for finding the statistical maximum, which is one of key operations in statistical static timing analysis. We also show a few experimental results demonstrating the effect of the proposed model and algorithm.

    Recognizing human action in complex scenes is a challenging problem in computer vision. Some action-unrelated concepts, such as camera position features, could significantly affect the appearance of local spatio-temporal features, and therefore the performance of low-level features based methods degrades. In this letter, we define the action-unrelated concept: the position of camera as high-level features. We observe that they can serve as a prior to local spatio-temporal features for human action recognition. We encode this prior by modeling interactions between spatio-temporal features and camera position features. We infer camera position features from local spatio-temporal features via these interactions. The parameters of this model are estimated by a new max-margin algorithm. We evaluate the proposed method on KTH, IXMAS and Youtube actions datasets. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Weissman introduced a coding problem for channels with action-dependent states. In this coding problem, there are two encoders and a decoder. An encoder outputs an action that affects the state of the channel. Then, the other encoder outputs a codeword of the message into the channel by using the channel state. The decoder receives a noisy observation of the codeword, and reconstructs the message. In this paper, we show an exponential error bound for channels with action-dependent states based on the random coding argument.

This paper introduces examples of OpenFlow/SDN technologies applied to commercial cloud services. Various activities to expand coverage over commercial carrier networks are also mentioned.

    The objective of this research is to design a high-performance NAND flash memory system with a data buffer. The proposed buffer system in the NAND flash memory consists of two parts, i.e., a fully associative temporal buffer for temporal locality and a fully associative spatial buffer for spatial locality. We propose a new operating mechanism for reducing overhead of flash memory, that is, erase and write operations. According to our simulation results, the proposed buffer system can reduce the write and erase operations by about 73% and 79% for spec application respectively, compared with a fully associative buffer with two times more space. Futhermore, the average memory access time can improve by about 60% compared with other large buffer systems.

    A hash function is an important primitive for cryptographic protocols. Since algorithms of well-known hash functions are almost serial, it seems difficult to take full advantage of recent multi-core processors. This paper proposes a multilane hashing (MLH) mode that achieves both of high parallelism and high security. The MLH mode is designed in such a way that the processing speed is almost linear in the number of processors. Since the MLH mode exploits an existing hash function as a black box, it is applicable to any hash function. The bound on the indifferentiability of the MLH mode from a random oracle is beyond the birthday bound on the output length of an underlying primitive.

    In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system, two users use the same frequencies and number of sub-carriers so as to increase spectrum efficiency. When the codewords employed by them form a Golay complementary sequence (CS) mate, this system enjoys the upper bound of peak-to-mean envelope power ratio (PMEPR) as low as 4. This letter presents a construction method for producing S16-QAM and A16-QAM Golay CS mates, which arrives at the upper bound 4 of PMEPR. And when used as a Golay CS pair, they have an upper bound 2 of PMEPR, which is the same ones in both [18] and [17]. However, both cannot produce such mates.

    An S-band GaN on Si based 1kW-class SSPA system for space wireless applications is proposed. Since high-efficiency and high-reliability amplifier is one of the most important technologies for power and communication systems in a future space base station on a planet, compact, high-power, and high-efficiency SSPA is strongly requested instead of TWTA. Thus, we adopt GaN on Si based amplifier due to its remarkable material properties. At the beginning, thermal vacuum and radiation test of GaN on Si are conducted so as to confirm the space applicability. Fabricated SSPA system consists of eight 200W HPAs and coaxial waveguide power combiner. It achieves high efficiency such as 57% of drain efficiency and 87% of combining efficiency when RF output power achieves more than 60dBm. Furthermore, long-term stable operation and good phase noise characteristics are also confirmed.

    Vehicles' speed is one of the key factors in vehicle travel efficiency, as speed is related to vehicle travel time, travel safety, fuel consumption, and exhaust gas emissions (e.g., CO2 emissions). Therefore, to improve the travel efficiency, a recommended speed calculation scheme is proposed to assist driving in Vehicle Ad hoc networks (VANETs) circumstances. In the proposed scheme, vehicles' current speed and space headway are obtained by Vehicle-to-Roadside unit (V2R) communication and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication. Based on the vehicles' current speed and adjacent vehicles' space headway, a recommended speed is calculated by on-board units installed in the vehicles, and then this recommended speed is provided to drivers. The drivers can change their speed to the recommended speed. At the recommended speed, vehicle travel efficiency can be improved: vehicles can arrive at destinations in a shorter travel time with fewer stop times, lower fuel consumption, and less CO2 emission. In particular, when approaching intersections, vehicles can pass through the intersections with less red light waiting time and a higher non-stop passing rate.

  • Network-Supported TCP Rate Control for the Coexistence of Multiple and Different Types of Flows on IP over PLC

    With the approval of IEEE 1901 standard for power line communications (PLC) and the recent Internet-enable home appliances like the IPTV having access to a content-on-demand service through the Internet as AcTVila in Japan, there is no doubt that PLC has taken a great step forward to emerge as the preeminent in-home-network technology. However, existing schemes developed so far have not considered the PLC network connected to an unstable Internet environment (i.e. more realistic situation). In this paper, we investigate the communication performance from the end-user's perspective in networks with large and variable round-trip time (RTT) and with the existence of cross-traffic. Then, we address the problem of unfair bandwidth allocation when multiple and different types of flows coexist and propose a TCP rate control considering the difference in terms of end-to-end delay to solve it. We validate our methodology through simulations, and show that it effectively deals with the throughput unfairness problem under critical communication environment, where multiple flows with different RTTs share the PLC and cross-traffic exists on the path of the Internet.

  • Weighted Averages and Double Exponential Algorithms Open Access

    This paper reviews two simple numerical algorithms particularly useful in Computational ElectroMagnetics (CEM): the Weighted Averages (WA) algorithm and the Double Exponential (DE) quadrature. After a short historical introduction and an elementary description of the mathematical procedures underlying both techniques, they are applied to the evaluation of Sommerfeld integrals, where WA and DE combine together to provide a numerical tool of unprecedented quality. It is also shown that both algorithms have a much wider range of applications. A generalization of the WA algorithm, able to cope with integrands including products of Bessel and similar oscillatory functions, is described. Similarly, the original DE algorithm is adapted with exceptional results to the evaluation of the multidimensional singular integrals arising in the discretization of Integral-Equation based CEM formulations. The new possibilities of WA and DE algorithms are demonstrated through several practical numerical examples.

  • Evaluation of Interference between Parallel 120-GHz-Band Wireless Link Systems with High-Gain Cassegrain Antennas

    This paper investigates space and polarization multiplexing for multichannel transmission in a 120-GHz band wireless link system. The 120-GHz-band wireless equipment employs Cassegrain antennas with a gain of about 49dBi and cross-polar discrimination of 23dB. When each of two 120-GHz wireless links transmits a 10-Gbit/s data signal in the same direction over a distance of 800m, a bit error rate (BER) of below 10-12 is obtained when the receivers are set 30m apart. When forward error correction and polarization multiplexing are used for each wireless link, we can set two wireless links within 1m of each other and obtain a BER below 10-12. Moreover, we have experimentally shown that the rain attenuation of V- and H-polarization 120-GHz-band signal is almost the same.

  • Online Sparse Volterra System Identification Using Projections onto Weighted l1 Balls

    In this paper, online sparse Volterra system identification is proposed. For that purpose, the conventional adaptive projection-based algorithm with weighted l1 balls (APWL1) is revisited for nonlinear system identification, whereby the linear-in-parameters nature of Volterra systems is utilized. Compared with sparsity-aware recursive least squares (RLS) based algorithms, requiring higher computational complexity and showing faster convergence and lower steady-state error due to their long memory in time-invariant cases, the proposed approach yields better tracking capability in time-varying cases due to short-term data dependence in updating the weight. Also, when N is the number of sparse Volterra kernels and q is the number of input vectors involved to update the weight, the proposed algorithm requires O(qN) multiplication complexity and O(Nlog 2N) sorting-operation complexity. Furthermore, sparsity-aware least mean-squares and affine projection based algorithms are also tested.

    To deal with failures as simply as possible, we propose a new foundation for the core (untyped) C++, which is based on a new logic called task logic or imperative logic. We then introduce a sequential-disjunctive statement of the form S : R. This statement has the following semantics: execute S and R sequentially. It is considered a success if at least one of S, R is a success. This statement is useful for dealing with inessential errors without explicitly catching them.

    This letter proposes a new delivery format in order to realize unified transmissions of stereoscopic video contents over a dynamic adaptive streaming scheme. With the proposed delivery format, various forms of stereoscopic video contents regardless of their encoding and composition types can be delivered over the current dynamic adaptive streaming scheme. In addition, the proposed delivery format supports dynamic and efficient switching between 2D and 3D sequences in an interoperable manner for both 2D and 3D digital devices, regardless of their capabilities. This letter describes the designed delivery format and shows dynamic interoperable applications for 2D and 3D mixed contents with the implemented system in order to verify its features and efficiency.

    Many applications of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) require secure communication. The tree-based key management scheme, which is a symmetric key scheme, provides backward and forward secrecy. The sensor nodes in the communication group share a secret key for encrypting messages. When the sensor nodes are added to or evicted from the group, the group key has to be updated by sending rekeying messages. In this paper, we propose a method of key tree structure (KTS) generation by considering the addition and eviction ratio of sensor nodes to reduce the number of rekeying messages, which is influenced by the structure of the tree. For this, we define an extension of an existing tree structure such as a binary or ternary tree and generate KTS using an A* algorithm. To reduce the energy consumed by the message transmission, we also exploit genetic algorithm (GA) to build a secure communication group by considering the KTS. In the paper, we show the effectiveness of the proposed method compared with the existing structure via the simulation in terms of memory usage, the number of rekeying messages and energy consumption.
