We propose microwave heating via electromagnetic coupling using zeroth-order resonators (ZORs) to extend the uniform heating area. ZORs can generate resonant modes with a wavenumber of 0, which corresponds to an infinite guide wavelength. Under this condition, uniform heating is expected because the resulting standing waves would not have nodes or antinodes. In the design proposed in this paper, two ZORs fabricated on dielectric substrates are arranged to face each other for electromagnetic coupling, and a sample placed between the resonators is heated. A single ZOR was investigated using a 3D electromagnetic simulator, and the resonant frequency and electric field distribution of the simulated ZOR were confirmed to be in good agreement with those of the fabricated ZOR. Simulations of two ZORs facing each other were then conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed system as a heating apparatus. It was found that a resonator spacing of 25 mm was suitable for uniform heating. Heating simulations of SiC and Al2O3 sheets were performed with the obtained structure. The heating uniformity was evaluated by the width L50% over which the power loss distribution exceeds half the maximum value. This evaluation index was equal to 0.397λ0 for SiC and 0.409λ0 for Al2O3, both of which exceed λ0/4, the distance between a neighboring node and antinode of a standing wave, where λ0 is the free-space wavelength. Therefore, the proposed heating apparatus is effective for uniform microwave heating. Because of the different electrical parameters of the heated materials, SiC can be easily heated, whereas Al2O3 heats little. Finally, heating experiments were performed on each of these materials. Good uniformity in temperature was obtained for both SiC and Al2O3 sheets.

In the field of micro-LED displays consisting of UV or Blue-LED arrays and phosphors, where the chips used are very small, particle size of phosphors must be small to suppress variation in hue for each pixel. Especially, there is a strong demand for a red phosphor with small particle sizes. However, quantum yields of inorganic phosphors decrease as particles size of phosphors get smaller. On the other hand, in the case of organic phosphors and complexes, quantum yields don't decrease when particle size gets smaller because each molecule has a function of absorbing and emitting light. We focus on Eu(III) complexes as candidates of red phosphors for micro-LED displays because their color purities of photoluminescence spectra are high, and have been tried to enhance photoluminescence intensity by coordinating non-ionic ligand, specifically, newly designed phosphine oxide ligands. Non-ionic ligands have generally less influential on properties of complexes compared with ionic ligands, but have a high degree of flexibility in molecular design. We found novel molecular design concept of phosphine oxide ligands to enhance photoluminescence properties of Eu(III) complexes. This time, novel dinuclear Eu(III)-β-diketonates with a branched tetraphosphine tetraoxide ligand, TDPBPO and TDPPPO, were developed. They are designed to have two different phosphine oxide portions; one has aromatic substituents and the other has no aromatic substituent. TDPBPO and TDPPPO ligands have functions of increasing absolute quantum yields of Eu(III)-β-diketonates. Eu(III)-β-diketonates with branched tetraphosphine tetraoxide ligands have sharp red emissions and excellent quantum yields, and are promising candidates for micro LED displays, security media, and sensing for their pure and strong photoluminescence intensity.

The generation and reduction reaction of magnesium plasma were studied using a cylindrical transverse magnetic-mode applicator in magnetic and electric field modes. By heating Mg powder using the magnetic field mode, plasma was generated with the evaporation of Mg and stably sustained. When the Mg plasma sample was introduced into the reaction zone and exposed to microwave and lamp heating, a reduction reaction of scandium oxide also occurred. The results of this study provide prospects for the development of a larger microwave refining system.

Incorporating a tool for administering medication, such as a syringe, is required in microneedles (MNs) for medical use. This renders it easier for non-medical personnel to administer medication. Because it is difficult to fabricate a hollow MN, we fabricated a capillary groove on an MN and its substrate to enable the administration of a higher dosage. MN grooving is difficult to accomplish via the conventional injection molding method used for polylactic acid. Therefore, biodegradable polyacid anhydride was selected as the material for the MN. Because polyacid anhydride is a low-viscosity liquid at room temperature, an MN can be grooved using a processing method similar to vacuum casting. This study investigated the performance of the capillary force of the MN and the optimum shape and size of the MN by a puncture test.

To facilitate the reuse of environmental waste heat in our society, we have developed high-efficiency flexible thermoelectric power generators (TEPGs). In this study, we investigated the thermoelectromotive force (TEMF) and output power of a prototype device with 50 pairs of Π-type structures using a homemade measurement system for flexible TEPGs in order to evaluate their characteristics along the thickness direction. The prototype device consisted of C fabrics (CAFs) used as p-type materials, NiCu fabrics (NCFs) used as n-type materials, and Ag fabrics (AGFs) used as metal electrodes. Applying a temperature difference of 5K, we obtained a TEMF of 150μV and maximum output power of 6.4pW. The obtained TEMF was smaller than that expected from the Seebeck coefficients of each fabric, which is considered to be mainly because of the influence of contact thermal resistance at the semiconductor-fabric/AGF interfaces.

Magneto-optical (MO) switches operate with a dynamically applied magnetic field. The MO devices presented in this paper consist of microring resonators (MRRs) fabricated on amorphous silicon-on-garnet platform. Two types of MO switches with MRRs were developed. In the first type, the switching state is controlled by an external magnetic field component included in the device. By combination of MO and thermo-optic effects, wavelength tunable operation is possible without any additional heater, and broadband switching is achievable. The other type of switch is a self-holding optical switch integrated with an FeCoB thin-film magnet. The switching state is driven by the remanence of the integrated thin-film magnet, and the state is maintained without any power supply.

Extremely compact harmonic tuning circuits for class-F amplifiers are realized using composite right-/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line stubs. The proposed circuits take up only a small fraction of the amplifier circuit area and yet are capable of treating four harmonics up to the 5th with a single stub or double stub configuration. This has become possible by using the negative order resonance modes of the CRLH TL, allowing for flexible and simultaneous control of many harmonics by engineering the dispersion relation of the stub line. The CRLH harmonic tuning stubs for 2-GHz amplifiers were realized using surface mounting chip capacitors, whereas the stub for 4-GHz amplifiers was fabricated based fully on microstrip-line technology. The fabricated 2-GHz and 4-GHz GaN HEMT class-F amplifiers exhibited peak drain efficiency and peak PAE of more than 83% and 74%, respectively.

Radar-absorbent materials (RAM) with various characteristics, such as broadband, oblique-incidence, and polarization characteristics, have been developed according to applications in recent years. This paper presents the optimized design method of two flat layers RAM with both broadband and oblique-incidence characteristics for the required RAM performance. The oblique-incidence characteristics mean that the RAM is possible to absorb radio waves continuously up to the maximum incidence angle. The index of the wave-absorption amount is 20dB, corresponding to an absorption rate of 99%. Because determination of the electrical material constant of each layer is the most important task with respect to the received frequency and the incidence angle, we optimized the values by using Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Two types of flat-layer RAM composed of dielectric and magnetic materials were designed and their characteristics were evaluated. Consequently, it was confirmed that oblique-incidence characteristics were better for the RAM composed of dielectric materials. The dielectric RAM achieved an incidence angle of up to 60° with broadband characteristics and a relative bandwidth of 77.01% at the transverse-magnetic (TM) wave incidence. In addition, the magnetic RAM could lower the minimum frequency of the system more than the dielectric RAM. The minimum frequency of the magnetic RAM was 1.38GHz with a relative bandwidth of 174.18% at TM-wave incidence and an incidence angle of 45°. We confirmed that it is possible to design RAM with broadband characteristics and continuous oblique-incidence characteristics by using the proposed method.
Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) usingpolydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)-based organic-inorganic hybrid materials as binders can be used to prepare alumina-binder composites on metal substrates. Herein, we investigated the deposition mechanism of PDMS-based polymers. The composition and porosity of EPD composites can be controlled by adjusting the EPD condition, and shape of alumina particles.

This paper describes the equivalent-circuit model of a metamaterial composed of conducting spheres and wires. This model involves electromagnetic coupling between the conductors, with retardation. The lumped-parameter equivalent circuit, which imports retardation to the electromagnetic coupling, is developed in this paper from Maxwell's equation. Using the equivalent-circuit model, we clarify the relationship between the retardation and radiation loss; we theoretically demonstrate that the electromagnetic retardation in the near-field represents the radiation loss of the meta-atom in the far-field. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the retarded electromagnetic coupling between two meta-atoms; we estimate the changes in the resonant frequencies and the losses due to the distance between the two coupled meta-atoms. It is established that the dependence characteristics are significantly affected by electromagnetic retardation.

This paper describes a novel composite right-/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) stub resonator for X-band low phase-noise oscillator application. The bandpass filter type resonator composed only of microstrip components exhibits unloaded-Q exceeding that of microstrip-line resonators by engineering the dispersion relation for the CRLH TL. Two different types of stub resonator using identical and non-identical unit-cells are compared. Although the latter type was found to be superior to the former in terms of spurious frequency responses and the circuit size, care was taken to prevent the parasitic inductances distributed in the interdigital capacitors from impeding the Q-factor control capability of the resonator. The stub resonator thus optimized was applied to an 8.8-GHz SiGe HBT oscillator, which achieved a phase-noise of -134dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset despite the modest dielectric loss tangent of the PCB laminate used as the substrate of the circuit.

We have measured the Seebeck coefficient of a carbon fabric (CAF) using a homemade measurement system for flexible thermoelectric materials to evaluate Seebeck coefficient along the thickness direction. Our equipment consists of a thermocouple (TC) electrode contacted with a resistive heater and another TC electrode attached to a heat sink. A flexible sample is sandwiched with these TC electrodes and pressed by weights. The equipment is set on a weighing machine in order to confirm and hold the pressing force at the contact between the electrodes and the soft sample. Cu and Pb plates were measured as a reference material to calibrate and clarify the accuracy of our measurement system, and its validity was confirmed. The Seebeck coefficient of a single CAF layer ranged 4.3-5.1 µV/K, independent of extra weight. This fact indicates that the weight of heat sink is enough for stable contact at the TC-electrode/CAF interface. It was found that the Seebeck coefficient of layered CAF increases with an increase in the number of layers, which suggests the influence of the air between the CAF layers even though the heavy weight is used.

The problem of E-polarized plane wave diffraction by a thin material strip is analyzed using the Wiener-Hopf technique together with approximate boundary conditions. Exact and high-frequency asymptotic solutions are obtained. Our final solution is valid for the case where the strip thickness is small and the strip width is large in comparison to the wavelength. The scattered field is evaluated asymptotically based on the saddle point method and a far field expression is derived. Numerical examples on the radar cross section (RCS) are presented for various physical parameters and the scattering characteristics of the strip are discussed in detail.

Novel design approaches for microwave active circuits using composite right-/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) stubs are presented. We show that, by modifying the dispersion diagram of the CRLH TL stub, the frequency band or the harmonic tuning capability can be enhanced in such a way that it would have been difficult or impractical if done using conventional micro-strip line stubs. The frequency response of the CRLH TL stub can be controlled almost arbitrarily while at the same time reducing the stub length significantly, because the dispersion curve in the left-handed region and in the right-handed region is controlled independently. As a proof of concept, a triple-band rectifier, single-band and dual-band harmonic tuning circuits for class-F amplifiers are demonstrated.

Anisotropic dielectrics and ferromagnetic materials are widely used in dispersion-engineered metamaterials. For example, nonreciprocal magnetic photonic crystals (MPhCs) are periodic structures whose unit cell is composed of two misaligned anisotropic dielectric layers and one ferromagnetic layer and they have extraordinary characteristics such as wave slowdown and field amplitude increase. We develop an unconditionally stable complex-envelop alternating-direction-implicit finite-difference time-domain method (CE-ADI-FDTD) suitable for the transient analysis of anisotropic dielectrics and ferromagnetic materials. In the proposed algorithm, the perfectly-matched-layer (PML) is straightforwardly incorporated in Maxwell's curl equations. Numerical examples show that the proposed PML-CE-ADI-FDTD method can reduce the CPU time significantly for the transient analysis of anisotropic dielectrics and ferromagnetic materials while maintaining computational accuracy.

The equivalent anisotropic material parameters of metal dummy fills in a CMOS chip were extracted through an eigenmode analysis of a unit-cell of a space filled with metal dummies. The validity of the parameters was confirmed by comparing the S-parameters of a parallel-plate waveguide with the metal dummy fills and their effective material properties. The validity of the effective material properties was also confirmed by using them in a simulation of an on-chip dipole antenna.

An equivalent-circuit model is an effective tool for the analysis and design of metamaterials. This paper describes a systematic and theoretical method for the circuit modeling of meta-atoms. We focus on the structures of wired metallic spheres and propose a method for deriving a sophisticated equivalent circuit that has the same topology as the wires using the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method. Our model contains the effect of external electromagnetic coupling: excitation by an external field modeled by voltage sources and radiation modeled by the radiation resistances for each mode. The equivalent-circuit model provides the characteristics of meta-atoms such as the resonant frequencies and the resonant modes induced by the current distribution in the wires by an external excitation. Although the model is obtained by a very coarse discretization, it provides a good agreement with an electromagnetic simulation.

A novel compact multi-input multi-output (MIMO) antenna system with split-ring resonator (SRR), a popular metamaterial structure, is presented. The MIMO antenna system consists of SRRs as radiator elements arranged close to each other on a printed circuit board. We evaluate the antenna characteristics with a single and two SRR elements arranged within various sizes of area. We also analyze MIMO channel capacities of SRR elements by using radiation patterns. The obtained results confirm that the proposed MIMO antenna system can achieve the same channel capacity as a conventional MIMO antenna system but with a 30% smaller footprint area and is very suitable for compact wireless equipment in next-generation wireless systems.

Magnet-less non-reciprocal metamaterial (MNM) synthesise artificial magnetic gyrotropy by metal ring resonator with unilateral component insertion. Clear advantage to natural magnetic material is full integrated circuit ingredient compatibility but still suffers from drawbacks of consumption power in active component and footprint of ring resonator. A new MNM structure by a varactor inserted figure of eight resonator is introduced, which enables reduction of active components by half and even smaller footprint to the original simple ring resonator structure in addition to frequency tunability.
