This paper introduces a computational approach for transient analysis of extensive scattering problems. This novel method is based on the combination of physical optics (PO) and the fast inverse Laplace transform (FILT). PO is a technique for analyzing electromagnetic scattering from large-scale objects. We modify PO for application in the complex frequency domain, where the scattered fields are evaluated. The complex frequency function is efficiently transformed into the time domain using FILT. The effectiveness of this combination is demonstrated through large-scale analysis and transient response for a short pulse incidence. The accuracy is investigated and validated by comparison with reference solutions.

In this study, the edge diffraction of a TM-polarized electromagnetic plane wave by two-dimensional dielectric wedges has been analyzed. An asymptotic solution for the radiation field has been derived from equivalent electric and magnetic currents which can be determined by the geometrical optics (GO) rays. This method may be regarded as an extended version of physical optics (PO). The diffracted field has been represented in terms of cotangent functions whose singularity behaviors are closely related to GO shadow boundaries. Numerical calculations are performed to compare the results with those by other reference solutions, such as the hidden rays of diffraction (HRD) and a numerical finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. Comparisons of the diffraction effect among these results have been made to propose additional lateral waves in the denser media.

Multi-band WDM transmission beyond the C+L-band is a promising technology for achieving larger capacity transmission by a limited number of installed fibers. In addition to the C- and L-band, we can expect to use the S-band as the next band. Although the development of optical components for new bands, particularly transceivers, entails resource dispersion, which is one of the barriers to the realization of multi-band systems, wavelength conversion by transparent all-optical signal processing enables new wavelength bandtransmission using existing components. Therefore, we proposed a transmission system including a new wavelength band such as the S-band and made it possible to use a transceiver for the existing band by performing the whole-band wavelength conversion without using a transceiver for the new band. As a preliminary verification to demonstrate multi-band WDM transmission including S-band, we investigated the application of a novel wavelength converter between C-band and S-band, which consists of periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, to the proposed system. We first characterized the conversion efficiency and noise figure of the wavelength converter and estimated the transmission performance of the system through the wavelength converter. Using the evaluated wavelength converters and test signals of 64 channels arranged in the C-band at 75-GHz intervals, we constructed an experimental setup for S-band transmission through an 80-km standard single-mode fiber. We then demonstrated error-free transmission of real-time 400-Gb/s DP-16QAM signals after forward error correction decoding. From the experimental results, it was clarified that the wavelength converter which realizes the uniform lossless conversion covering the whole C-band effectively achieves the S-band WDM transmission, and it was verified that the capacity improvement of the multi-band WDM system including the S-band can be expected by applying it in combination with the C+L-band WDM system.

One of cost-effective ways to increase the transmission capacity of current standard wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission systems is to use a wavelength band other than the C-band to transmit in multi-band. We proposed the concept of multi-band system using wavelength conversion, which can simultaneously process signals over a wide wavelength range. All-optical wavelength conversion could be used to convert C-band WDM signals into other bands in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) by four-wave mixing and allow to simultaneously transmit multiple WDM signals including other than the C-band, with only C-band transceivers. Wavelength conversion has been reported for various nonlinear waveguide materials other than HNLF. In such nonlinear materials, we noticed the possibility of wideband transmission by dispersion-tailored silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides. Based on the CMOS process has high accuracy, it is expected that the chromatic dispersion fluctuation could be reduced in mass production. As a first step in the investigation of the broadness of wavelength conversion using SOI-based waveguides, we designed and fabricated dispersion-tailored 12 strip waveguides provided with an edge coupler at both ends. Each of the 12 waveguides having different widths and lengths and is connected to fibers via lensed fibers or by lenses. In order to characterize each waveguide, the pump-probe experimental setup was constructed using a tunable light source as pump and an unmodulated 96-ch C-band WDM test signal. Using this setup, we evaluate insertion loss, input power dependence, conversion bandwidth and conversion efficiency. We confirmed C-band test signal was converted to the S-band and the L-band using the same silicon waveguide with 3dB conversion bandwidth over 100-nm. Furthermore, an increased design tolerance of at least 90nm was confirmed for C-to-S conversion by shortening the waveguide length. It is confirmed that the wavelength converters using the nonlinear waveguide has sufficiently wide conversion bandwidth to enhance the multi-band WDM transmission system.

Optical phase conjugation (OPC) is an all-optical signal processing technique for mitigating fiber nonlinearity and is promising for building cost-efficient fiber networks with few optic-electric-optic conversions and long amplification spacing. In lumped amplified systems, OPC has a little nonlinearity mitigation efficiency for nonlinear distortion induced by cross-phase modulation (XPM) due to the asymmetry of power and chromatic dispersion (CD) maps during propagation in transmission fiber. In addition, the walk-off of XPM-induced noise becomes small due to the CD compensation effect of OPC, so the deterministic nonlinear distortion increases. Therefore, lumped amplified transmission systems with OPC are more sensitive to channel spacing than conventional systems. In this paper, we show the channel spacing dependence of NZ-DSF transmission using amplification repeater with OPC. Numerical simulations show comprehensive characteristics between channel spacing and CD in a 100-Gbps/λ WDM signal. An experimental verification using periodically poled LiNbO3-based OPC is also performed. These results suggest that channel spacing design is more important in OPC-assisted systems than in conventional dispersion-unmanaged systems.

A Josephson parametric oscillator (JPO) is an interesting system from the viewpoint of quantum optics because it has two stable self-oscillating states and can deterministically generate quantum cat states. A theoretical proposal has been made to operate a network of multiple JPOs as a quantum annealer, which can solve adiabatically combinatorial optimization problems at high speed. Proof-of-concept experiments have been actively conducted for application to quantum computations. This article provides a review of the mechanism of JPOs and their application as a quantum annealer.

In this study, edge diffraction of an electromagnetic plane wave by two-dimensional conducting wedges has been analyzed by the physical optics (PO) method for both E and H polarizations. Non-uniform and uniform asymptotic solutions of diffracted fields have been derived. A unified edge diffraction coefficient has also been derived with four cotangent functions from the conventional angle-dependent coefficients. Numerical calculations have been made to compare the results with those by other methods, such as the exact solution and the uniform geometrical theory of diffraction (UTD). A good agreement has been observed to confirm the validity of our method.

In this paper, the scattering far-field from a circular electric conducting cylinder has been analyzed by physical optics (PO) approximation for both H and E polarizations. The evaluation of radiation integrations due to the PO current is conducted numerically and analytically. While non-uniform and uniform asymptotic solutions have been derived by the saddle point method, a separate approximation has been made for forward scattering direction. Comparisons among our approximation, direct numerical integration and exact solution results yield a good agreement for electrically large cylinders.

We developed a polarization-independent and reserved-band-less complementary spectral inverted optical phase conjugation (CSI-OPC) device using dual-band difference frequency generation based on highly efficient periodically poled LiNbO3 waveguide technologies. To examine the nonlinearity mitigation in a long-haul transmission using a large number of OPCs, we installed a CSI-OPC device in the middle of a pure silica core fiber-based recirculating loop transmission line with a length of 320km. First, we examined the fiber-input power tolerance after 5,120-km and 6,400-km transmission using 22.5-Gbaud PDM-16QAM 10-channel DWDM signals and found a Q-factor improvement of over 1.3dB along with enhanced power tolerance thanks to mitigating the fiber nonlinearity. We then demonstrated transmission distance extension using the CSI-OPC device. The use of multiple CSI-OPCs enables an obvious performance improvements attained by extending the transmission distance from 6,400km to 8,960km, which corresponds to applying the CSI-OPC device 28 times. Moreover, there was no Q-factor degradation for the link in a linear regime after applying the CSI-OPC device more than 16 times. These results demonstrate that the CSI-OPC device can improve the nonlinear tolerance of PDM-16QAM signals without an excess penalty.

Plane wave scattering from a circular conducting cylinder and a circular conducting strip has been formulated by equivalent surface currents which are postulated from the scattering geometrical optics (GO) field. Thus derived radiation far fields are found to be the same as those formulated by a conventional physical optics (PO) approximation for both E and H polarizations.

This paper proposes a novel Depth From Defocus (DFD) technique based on the property that two images having different focus settings coincide if they are reblurred with the opposite focus setting, which is referred to as the “cross reblurring” property in this paper. Based on the property, the proposed technique estimates the block-wise depth profile for a target object by minimizing the mean squared error between the cross-reblurred images. Unlike existing DFD techniques, the proposed technique is free of lens parameters and independent of point spread function models. A compensation technique for a possible pixel disalignment between images is also proposed to improve the depth estimation accuracy. The experimental results and comparisons with the other DFD techniques show the advantages of our technique.

We have comprehensively studied by numerical simulation high power transmission properties through single mode fiber for non-repeatered system application. We have clearly captured bit error rates (BERs) of digital coherent signal exhibit specific floor levels, depending on transmitter powers, due to fiber nonlinearity. If the maximum transmitter powers are defined as the powers at which BER floor levels are 1.0×10-2 without error correction, those are found to be approximately +20.4dBm, +14.8dBm and +10.6dBm, respectively, for single-channel 120Gbps DP-QPSK, DP-16QAM and DP-64QAM formats in large-core and low-loss single-mode silica fibers. In the simulations, we set fiber lengths over 100km, which is much longer than the effective fiber length, thus the results are applicable to any of long-length non-repeatered systems. We also show that the maximum transmitter powers gradually decrease in logarithmic feature with the increase of the number of DWDM channels. The channel number dependence is newly shown to be almost independent on the modulation format. The simulated results have been compared with extended Gaussian-Noise (GN) model with introducing adjustment parameters, not only to confirm the validity of the results but to explore possible new analytical modeling for non-repeatered systems.

Datacenter growth in traffic and scale is driving innovations in constructing tightly-coupled facilities with low-latency communication for different specific applications. A famous custom design is rackscale (RS) computing by gathering key server resource components into different resource pools. Such a resource-pooling implementation requires a new software stack to manage resource discovery, resource allocation and data communication. The reconfiguration of interconnection networks on their components is potentially needed to support the above demand in RS. In this context as an evolution of the original RS architecture the inter-rackscale (IRS) architecture, which disaggregates hardware components into different racks according to their own areas, has been proposed. The heart of IRS is to use a limited number of free-space optics (FSO) channels for wireless connections between different resource racks, via which selected pairs of racks can communicate directly and thus resource-pooling requirements are met without additional software management. In this study we evaluate the influences of FSO links on IRS networks. Evaluation results show that FSO links reduce average communication hop count for user jobs, which is close to the best possible value of 2 hops and thus provides comparable benchmark performance to that of the counterpart RS architecture. In addition, if four FSO terminals per rack are allowed, the CPU/SSD (GPU) interconnection latency is reduced by 25.99% over Fat-tree and by 67.14% over 2-D Torus. We also present the advantage of an FSO-equipped IRS system in average turnaround time of dispatched jobs for given sets of benchmark workloads.

We discuss our recent progress in photonic crystal nanocavity quantum dot lasers. We show how enhanced light matter interactions in the nanocavity lead to diverse and fascinating lasing phenomena that are in general inaccessible by conventional bulky semiconductor lasers. First, we demonstrate thresholdless lasing, in which any clear kink in the output laser curve does not appear. This is a result of near unity coupling of spontaneous emission into the lasing cavity mode, enabled by the strong Purcell effect supported in the nanocavity. Then, we discuss self-frequency conversion nanolasers, in which both near infrared lasing oscillation and nonlinear optical frequency conversion to visible light are simultaneously supported in the individual nanocavity. Owing to the tight optical confinement both in time and space, a high normalized conversion efficiency over a few hundred %/W is demonstrated. We also show that the intracavity nonlinear frequency conversion can be utilized to measure the statistics of the intracavity photons. These novel phenomena will be useful for developing various nano-optoelectronic devices with advanced functionalities.

A lens-integrated surface-emitting DFB laser and its application to low-cost single-mode optical sub-assemblies (OSAs) are discussed. By using the LISEL, high-efficient optical coupling with reduced number of optical components and non-hermetic packaging are demonstrated. Designing the integrated lens of LISELs makes it possible to achieve passive alignment optical coupling to an SMF without the need for an additional lens. For SiP coupling, the light-emission angle from the LISEL can be controlled by the mirror angle and by displacing the lens. The capability for a low coupling loss of 3.9 dB between the LISEL and a grating coupler on the SiP platform was demonstrated. The LISEL with facet-free structure, integrating DBR mirror, PD, and window structure on its end facet, showed the same lasing performance as the conventional laser with AR facet coating. A storage test (200-hour saturated pressure-cooker test (PCT) at 138°C and 85% RH.) showed that the lasing characteristics did not degrade with high-humidity, demonstrating the potential for applying non-hermetic packaging. Our results indicate that the LISEL is one of the promising light sources for creating cost-effective OSAs.

In this review, we present recent advances relating to superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SSPDs or SNSPDs) and their broad range of applications. During a period exceeding ten years, the system performance of SSPDs has been drastically improved, and lately excellent detection efficiencies have been realized in practical systems for a wide range of target photon wavelengths. Owing to their advantages such as high system detection efficiency, low dark count rate, and excellent timing jitter, SSPDs have found application in various research fields such as quantum information, quantum optics, optical communication, and also in the life sciences. We summarize the photon detection principle and the current performance status of practical SSPD systems. In addition, we introduce application examples in which SSPDs have been applied.

A number of parallel applications run on a high-performance computing (HPC) system simultaneously. Job mapping and scheduling become crucial to improve system utilization, because fragmentation prevents an incoming job from being assigned even if there are enough compute nodes unused. Wireless supercomputers and datacenters with free-space optical (FSO) terminals have been proposed to replace the conventional wired interconnection so that a diverse application workload can be better supported by changing their network topologies. In this study we firstly present an efficient job mapping by swapping the endpoints of FSO links in a wireless HPC system. Our evaluation shows that an FSO-equipped wireless HPC system can achieve shorter average queuing length and queuing time for all the dispatched user jobs. Secondly, we consider the use of a more complicated and enhanced scheduling algorithm, which can further improve the system utilization over different host networks, as well as the average response time for all the dispatched user jobs. Finally, we present the performance advantages of the proposed wireless HPC system under more practical assumptions such as different cabinet capacities and diverse subtopology packings.
