In cyber-physical systems (CPSs) that interact between physical and information components, there are many sensors that are connected through a communication network. In such cases, the reduction of communication costs is important. Event-triggered control that the control input is updated only when the measured value is widely changed is well known as one of the control methods of CPSs. In this paper, we propose a design method of output feedback controllers with decentralized event-triggering mechanisms, where the notion of uniformly ultimate boundedness is utilized as a control specification. Using this notion, we can guarantee that the state stays within a certain set containing the origin after a certain time, which depends on the initial state. As a result, the number of times that the event occurs can be decreased. First, the design problem is formulated. Next, this problem is reduced to a BMI (bilinear matrix inequality) optimization problem, which can be solved by solving multiple LMI (linear matrix inequality) optimization problems. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is presented by a numerical example.

This letter presents a dual-band load-modulated sequential amplifier (LMSA). The proposed amplifier changed the attenuator terminated at the isolation port of the four-port combiner of the traditional sequential power amplifier (SPA) architecture into a reactance modulation network (RMN) for load modulation. The impedance can be maintained pure resistance by designing RMN, thus realizing high efficiency and a good portion of the output power in the multiple bands. Compared to the dual-band Doherty power amplifier with a complex dual-band load modulation network (LMN), the proposed LMSA has advantages as maintaining high output power back-off (OBO) efficiency, wide bandwidth and simple construction. A 10-watt dual-band LMSA is simulated and measured in 1.7-1.9GHz and 2.4-2.6GHz with saturated efficiencies 61.2-69.9% and 54.4-70.8%, respectively. The corresponding 9dB OBO efficiency is 46.5-57.1% and 46.4-54.4%, respectively.

Intelligent traffic monitoring provides information support for autonomous driving, which is widely used in intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). A method for estimating vehicle moving target parameters based on millimeter-wave radars is proposed to solve the problem of low detection accuracy due to velocity ambiguity and Doppler-angle coupling in the process of traffic monitoring. First of all, a MIMO antenna array with overlapping elements is constructed by introducing them into the typical design of MIMO radar array antennas. The motion-induced phase errors are eliminated by the phase difference among the overlapping elements. Then, the position errors among them are corrected through an iterative method, and the angle of multiple targets is estimated. Finally, velocity disambiguation is performed by adopting the error-corrected phase difference among the overlapping elements. An accurate estimation of vehicle moving target angle and velocity is achieved. Through Monte Carlo simulation experiments, the angle error is 0.1° and the velocity error is 0.1m/s. The simulation results show that the method can be used to effectively solve the problems related to velocity ambiguity and Doppler-angle coupling, meanwhile the accuracy of velocity and angle estimation can be improved. An improved algorithm is tested on the vehicle datasets that are gathered in the forward direction of ordinary public scenes of a city. The experimental results further verify the feasibility of the method, which meets the real-time and accuracy requirements of ITSs on vehicle information monitoring.

This paper presents a hippocampal cognitive prosthesis chip designed for restoring the ability to form new long-term memories due to hippocampal system damage. The system-on-chip (SOC) consists of a 16-channel micro-power low-noise amplifier (LNA), high-pass filters, analog-digital converters (ADCs), a 16-channel spike-sorter, a generalized Laguerre-Volterra model multi-input, multi-output (GLVM-MIMO) hippocampal processor, an 8-channel neural stimulator and peripheral circuits. The proposed LNA achieved a voltage gain of 50dB, input-referred noise of 3.95µVrms, and noise efficiency factor (NEF) of 3.45 with the power consumption of 3.3µW. High-pass filters with a 300-Hz bandwidth are used to filter out the unwanted local field potential (LFP). 4 12-bit successive approximation register (SAR) ADCs with a signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 63.37dB are designed for the digitization of the neural signals. A 16-channel spike-sorter has been integrated in the chip enabling a detection accuracy of 98.3% and a classification accuracy of 93.4% with power consumption of 19µW/ch. The MIMO hippocampal model processor predict output spatio-temporal patterns in CA1 according to the recorded input spatio-temporal patterns in CA3. The neural stimulator performs bipolar, symmetrical charge-balanced stimulation with a maximum current of 310µA, triggered by the processor output. The chip has been fabricated in 40nm standard CMOS technology, occupying a silicon area of 3mm2.

Conventional enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) use glucose solution or glucose from human body. It is desirable to get glucose from a substance containing glucose because the glucose concentration can be kept at the optimum level. This work developed a biofuel cell that generates electricity from cellulose, which is the main components of plants, by using decomposing enzyme of cellulase. Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) was chosen for the ease of decomposability. It was confirmed by the cyclic voltammetry method that cellulase was effective against CNF. The maximum output of the optimized proposed method was 38.7 μW/cm2, which was 85% of the output by using the glucose solution at the optimized concentration.

In this paper, a passive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system with widely separated antennas that estimates the positions and velocities of multiple moving targets by utilizing time delay (TD) and doppler shift (DS) measurements is proposed. Passive radar systems can detect targets by using multiple uncoordinated and un-synchronized illuminators and we assume that all the measurements including TD and DS have been known by a preprocessing method. In this study, the algorithm can be divided into three stages. First, based on location information within a certain range and utilizing the DBSCAN cluster algorithm we can obtain the initial position of each target. In the second stage according to the correlation between the TD measurements of each target in a specific receiver and the DSs, we can find the set of DS measurements for each target. Therefore, the initial speed estimated values can be obtained employing the least squares (LS) method. Finally, maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of a first-order Taylor expansion joint TD and DS is applied for a better solution. Extensive simulations show that the proposed algorithm has a good estimation performance and can achieve the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) under the condition of moderate measurement errors.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems generally adopt hybrid precoding combining digital and analog precoder as an alternative to full digital precoding to reduce RF chains and energy consumption. In order to balance the relationship between spectral efficiency, energy efficiency and hardware complexity, the hybrid-connected system structure should be adopted, and then the solution process of hybrid precoding can be simplified by decomposing the total achievable rate into several sub-rates. However, the singular value decomposition (SVD) incurs high complexity in calculating the optimal unconstrained hybrid precoder for each sub-rate. Therefore, this paper proposes PAST, a low complexity hybrid precoding algorithm based on projection approximate subspace tracking. The optimal unconstrained hybrid precoder of each sub-rate is estimated with the PAST algorithm, which avoids the high complexity process of calculating the left and right singular vectors and singular value matrix by SVD. Simulations demonstrate that PAST matches the spectral efficiency of SVD-based hybrid precoding in full-connected (FC), hybrid-connected (HC) and sub-connected (SC) system structure. Moreover, the superiority of PAST over SVD-based hybrid precoding in terms of complexity and increases with the number of transmitting antennas.

A multibeam massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) configuration employs beam selection with high power in the analog part and executes a blind algorithm such as the independent component analysis (ICA), which does not require channel state information in the digital part. Two-dimensional (2-D) multibeams are considered in actual power losses and beam steering errors regarding the multibeam patterns. However, the performance of these 2-D beams depends on the beam pattern of the multibeams, and they are not optimal multibeam patterns suitable for multibeam massive MIMO configurations. In this study, we clarify the performance difference due to the difference of the multibeam pattern and consider the multibeam pattern suitable for the system condition. Specifically, the optimal multibeam pattern was determined with the element spacing and beamwidth of the element directivity as parameters, and the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified via computer simulations.

In recent years, there has been significant interest in information-theoretic security techniques that encrypt physical layer signals. We have proposed chaos modulation, which has both physical layer security and channel coding gain, as one such technique. In the chaos modulation method, the channel coding gain can be increased using a turbo mechanism that exchanges the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) with an external concatenated code using the max-log approximation. However, chaos modulation, which is a type of Gaussian modulation, does not use fixed mapping, and the distance between signal points is not constant; therefore, the accuracy of the max-log approximated LLR degrades under poor channel conditions. As a result, conventional methods suffer from performance degradation owing to error propagation in turbo decoding. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new LLR clipping method that can be optimally applied to chaos modulation by limiting the confidence level of LLR and suppressing error propagation. For effective clipping on chaos modulation that does not have fixed mappings, the average confidence value is obtained from the extrinsic LLR calculated from the demodulator and decoder, and clipping is performed based on this value, either in the demodulator or the decoder. Numerical results indicated that the proposed method achieves the same performance as the one using the exact LLR, which requires complicated calculations. Furthermore, the security feature of the proposed system is evaluated, and we observe that sufficient security is provided.

This paper proposes a low-complexity variational Bayesian inference (VBI)-based method for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink channel estimation. The temporal correlation at the mobile user side is jointly exploited to enhance the channel estimation performance. The key to the success of the proposed method is the column-independent factorization imposed in the VBI framework. Since we separate the Bayesian inference for each column vector of signal-of-interest, the computational complexity of the proposed method is significantly reduced. Moreover, the temporal correlation is automatically uncoupled to facilitate the updating rule derivation for the temporal correlation itself. Simulation results illustrate the substantial performance improvement achieved by the proposed method.

In this paper, event-triggered control over a sensor network is studied as one of the control methods of cyber-physical systems. Event-triggered control is a method that communications occur only when the measured value is widely changed. In the proposed method, by solving an LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) feasibility problem, an event-triggered output feedback controller such that the closed-loop system is asymptotically stable is derived. First, the problem formulation is given. Next, the control problem is reduced to an LMI feasibility problem. Finally, the proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.

Expectation propagation (EP) is a powerful algorithm for signal recovery in compressed sensing. This letter proposes correction of a variance message before denoising to improve the performance of EP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime for finite-sized systems. The variance massage is replaced by an observation-dependent consistent estimator of the mean-square error in estimation before denoising. Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed correction. Numerical simulations show that the proposed variance correction improves the high SNR performance of EP for massive MIMO with a few hundred transmit and receive antennas.

Sparse orthogonal matrices are proposed to improve the convergence property of expectation propagation (EP) for sparse signal recovery from compressed linear measurements subject to known dense and ill-conditioned multiplicative noise. As a typical problem, this letter addresses generalized spatial modulation (GSM) in over-loaded and spatially correlated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The proposed sparse orthogonal matrices are used in precoding and constructed efficiently via a generalization of the fast Walsh-Hadamard transform. Numerical simulations show that the proposed sparse orthogonal precoding improves the convergence property of EP in over-loaded GSM MIMO systems with known spatially correlated channel matrices.

In this paper, we propose a robust output feedback control method for nonlinear systems with uncertain time-varying parameters associated with diagonal terms and there are additional external disturbances. First, we provide a new practical guidance of obtaining a compact set which contains the allowed time-varying parameters by utilizing a Lyapunov equation and matrix inequalities. Then, we show that all system states and observer errors of the controlled system remain bounded by the proposed controller. Moreover, we show that the ultimate bounds of some system states and observer errors can be made (arbitrarily) small by adjusting a gain-scaling factor depending on the system nonlinearity. With an application example, we illustrate the effectiveness of our control scheme over the existing one.

This paper discusses and elaborates an analytical model of a multi-stage switched-capacitor (SC) voltage boost converter (VBC) for low-voltage and low-power energy harvesting systems, because the output impedance of the VBC, which is derived from the analytical model, plays an important role in the VBC's performance. In our proposed method, we focus on currents flowing into input and output terminals of each stage and model the VBCs using switching frequency f, charge transfer capacitance CF, load capacitance CL, and process dependent parasitic capacitance's parameter k. A comparison between simulated and calculated results showed that our model can estimate the output impedance of the VBC accurately. Our model is useful for comparing the relative merits of different types of multi-stage SC VBCs. Moreover, we demonstrate the performance of a prototype SC VBC and energy harvesting system using the SC VBC to show the effectiveness and feasibility of our proposed design guideline.

This paper proposes a low complexity soft input decoding in an iterative linear receiver for overloaded MIMO. The proposed soft input decoding applies two types of lattice reduction-aided linear filters to estimate log-likelihood ratio (LLR) in order to reduce the computational complexity. A lattice reduction-aided linear with whitening filter is introduced for the LLR estimation in the proposed decoding. The equivalent noise caused by the linear filter is mitigated with the decoder output stream and the LLR is re-estimated after the equivalent noise mitigation. Furthermore, LLR clipping is introduced in the proposed decoding to avoid the performance degradation due to the incorrect LLRs. The performance of the proposed decoding is evaluated by computer simulation. The proposed decoding achieves about 2dB better BER performance than soft decoding with the exhaustive search algorithm, so called the MLD, at the BER of 10-4, even though the complexity of the proposed decoding is 1/10 as small as that of soft decoding with the exhaustive search.

This paper presents the excitation coefficient optimization of slot array antennas for increasing channel capacity in 2×2-mode two-dimensional ROM (rectangular coordinate orthogonal) transmission. Because the ROM transmission is for non-far region communication, the transmission between Tx (transmission) and Rx (reception) antennas increases when the antennas radiate beams inwardly. At first, we design the excitation coefficients of the slot arrays in order to enhance the transmission rate for a given transmission distance. Then, we fabricate monopulse corporate-feed waveguide slot array antennas that have the designed excitation amplitude and phase in the 60-GHz band for the 2×2-mode two-dimensional ROM transmission. The measured transmission between the fabricated Tx and Rx antennas increases at the given propagation distance and agrees with the simulation.

Secure two-party comparison plays a crucial role in many privacy-preserving applications, such as privacy-preserving data mining and machine learning. In particular, the available comparison protocols with the appropriate input/output configuration have a significant impact on the performance of these applications. In this paper, we firstly describe a taxonomy of secure two-party comparison protocols which allows us to describe the different configurations used for these protocols in a systematic manner. This taxonomy leads to a total of 216 types of comparison protocols. We then describe conversions among these types. While these conversions are based on known techniques and have explicitly or implicitly been considered previously, we show that a combination of these conversion techniques can be used to convert a perhaps less-known two-party comparison protocol by Nergiz et al. (IEEE SocialCom 2010) into a very efficient protocol in a configuration where the two parties hold shares of the values being compared, and obtain a share of the comparison result. This setting is often used in multi-party computation protocols, and hence in many privacy-preserving applications as well. We furthermore implement the protocol and measure its performance. Our measurement suggests that the protocol outperforms the previously proposed protocols for this input/output configuration, when off-line pre-computation is not permitted.

Wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs) utilize the wireless energy transfer (WET) technique to facilitate the wireless information transmission (WIT) of nodes. We propose a two-step iterative algorithm to maximize the sum throughput of the users in a MIMO WPCN with discrete signal inputs. Firstly, the optimal solution of a convex power allocation problem can be found given a fixed time allocation; Secondly, a semi closed form solution for the optimal time allocation is obtained when fixing the power allocation matrix. By optimizing the power allocation and time allocation alternately, the two-step algorithm converges to a local optimal point. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional schemes, which consider only Gaussian inputs.
