An output voltage-current equation of charge pump DC-DC voltage multiplier using diodes is provided to cover wide clock frequency and output current ranges for designing energy harvester operating at a near-threshold voltage or in sub-threshold region. Equivalent circuits in slow and fast switching limits are extracted. The effective threshold voltage of the diode in slow switching limit is also derived as a function of electrical characteristics of the diodes, such as the saturation current and voltage slope parameter, and design parameters such as the number of stages, capacitance per stage, parasitic capacitance at the top plate of the main boosting capacitor, and the clock frequency. The model is verified compared with SPICE simulation.

This paper proposes the statistical analysis of phase-only correlation functions between two real signals with phase-spectrum differences. For real signals, their phase-spectrum differences have odd-symmetry with respect to frequency indices. We assume phase-spectrum differences between two signals to be random variables. We next derive the expectation and variance of the POC functions considering the odd-symmetry of the phase-spectrum differences. As a result, the expectation and variance of the POC functions can be expressed by characteristic functions or trigonometric moments of the phase-spectrum differences. Furthermore, it is shown that the peak value of the POC function monotonically decreases and the sidelobe values monotonically increase as the variance of the phase-spectrum differences increases.

This paper proposes an effective continuous super-resolution (CSR) algorithm for the multipath channel estimation. By designing a preamble including up-chirp and down-chirp symbols, the Doppler shift and multipath delay are estimated jointly by using convex programming. Simulation results show that the proposed CSR can achieve better detection probability of the number of multipaths than the eigenvalue based methods. Moreover, compared with conventional super-resolution techniques, such as MUSIC and ESPRIT methods, the proposed CSR algorithm demonstrates its advantage in root mean square error of the Doppler shift and multipath delay, especially for the closely located paths within low SNR.

Variance analysis is an important research topic to assess the quality of estimators. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the least ℓp-norm estimator in the presence of mixture of generalized Gaussian (MGG) noise. In the case of known density parameters, the variance expression of the ℓp-norm minimizer is first derived, for the general complex-valued signal model. Since the formula is a function of p, the optimal value of p corresponding to the minimum variance is then investigated. Simulation results show the correctness of our study and the near-optimality of the ℓp-norm minimizer compared with Cramér-Rao lower bound.

Device-to-device (D2D) communication enables two local users to communicate with each other directly instead of relaying through a third party, e.g., base station. In this paper, we study a subchannel sharing strategy underlaying multichannel cellular network for D2D pairs and existing cellular users (CUs). In the investigated scenario, we try to improve the spectrum efficiency of D2D pairs, but inevitably brings cross interference between two user groups. To combat interference, we attempt to assign each D2D pair with appropriate subchannels, which may belong to different CUs, and manipulate transmission power of all users so as to maximize the sum rate of all D2D pairs, while assuring each CU with a minimum data rate on its subchannel set. The formulated problem is a nonconvex problem and thus, obtaining its optimal solution is a tough task. However, we can find optimal power and subchannel assignment for a special case by setting an independent data rate constraint on each subchannel. Then we find an efficient method to calculate a gradient for our original problem. Finally, we propose a gradient-based search method to address the problem with coupled minimum data rate constraint. The performance of our proposed subchannel sharing strategy is illustrated via extensive simulation results.

This paper proposes performance improvement schemes for non-coherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems employing per transmit antenna differential mapping (PADM). PADM is one form of differential space-time coding (DSTC), which generates an independent differentially encoded sequence for each of the multiple transmit antennas by means of space-time coding and mapping. The features of the proposed schemes are as follows: 1) it employs an asymmetric space-time mapping instead of the conventional symmetric space-time mapping in order to lower the required signal to noise power ratio (SNR) for maintaining the bit error rate (BER) performance; 2) it employs an analytically derived branch metric criterion based on channel prediction for per-survivor processing (PSP) in order to track fast time-varying channels. Finally, computer simulation results confirm that the proposed schemes improve the required SNR by around 1dB and can track at the maximum Doppler frequency normalized by symbol rate of 5%.

In this letter, efficient closed-form formulas for the exact and asymptotic average bit error probability (ABEP) of space shift keying (SSK) systems are derived over Rayleigh fading channels with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Specifically, for a generic 2×NR multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with the maximum likelihood (ML) detection, the impact of imperfect CSI is taken into consideration in terms of two types of channel estimation errors with the fixed variance and the variance as a function of the number of pilot symbols and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Then, the explicit evaluations of the bit error floor (BEF) and asymptotic SNR loss are carried out based on the derived asymptotic ABEP formula, which accounts for the impact of imperfect CSI on the SSK system. The numerical results are presented to validate the exactness of our theoretical analysis.

When performing measurements in an outdoor field environment, various interference factors occur. So, many studies have been performed to increase the accuracy of the localization. This paper presents a novel probability-based approach to estimating position based on Apollonius circles. The proposed algorithm is a modified method of existing trilateration techniques. This method does not need to know the exact transmission power of the source and does not require a calibration procedure. The proposed algorithm is verified in several typical environments, and simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms existing algorithms.

A modular serial pipelined sorting architecture for continuous input sequences is presented. It supports continuous sequences, whose lengths can be dynamically changed, and does so using a very simple control strategy. It consists of identical serial cascaded sorting cells, and lends itself to high frequency implementation with any number of sorting cells, because both data and control signals are pipelined. With L cascaded sorting cells, it produces a fully sorted result for sequences whose length N is equal to or less than L+1; for longer sequences, the largest L elements are sorted out. Being modularly designed, several independent smaller sorters can be dynamically configured to form a larger sorter.

In this paper, a hamburger architecture with a 3D stacked reconfigurable memory is proposed for a 4K motion estimation (ME) processor. By positioning the memory dies on both the top and bottom sides of the processor die, the proposed hamburger architecture can reduce the usage of the signal through-silicon via (TSV), and balance the power delivery network and the clock tree of the entire system. It results in 1/3 reduction of the usage of signal TSVs. Moreover, a stacked reconfigurable memory architecture is proposed to reduce the fabrication complexity and further reduce the number of signal TSVs by more than 1/2. The reduction of signal TSVs in the entire design is 71.24%. Finally, we address unique issues that occur in electronic design automation (EDA) tools during 3D large-scale integration (LSI) designs. As a result, a 4K ME processor with 7-die stacking 3D system-on-chip design is implemented. The proposed design can support real time 3840 × 2160 @ 120 fps encoding at 130 MHz with less than 540 mW.

The problem of radar constant-modulus (CM) waveform design for the detection of multiple targets is considered in this paper. The CM constraint is imposed from the perspective of hardware realization and full utilization of the transmitter's power. Two types of CM waveforms — the arbitrary-phase waveform and the quadrature phase shift keying waveform — are obtained by maximizing the minimum of the signal-to-clutter-plus-noise ratios of the various targets. Numerical results show that the designed CM waveforms perform satisfactorily, even when compared with their counterparts without constraints on the peak-to-average ratio.

An 8-issue superscalar core generally requires a 24-port RAM for the register file. The area and energy consumption of a multiported RAM increase in proportional to the square of the number of ports. A register cache can reduce the area and energy consumption of the register file. However, earlier register cache systems suffer from lower IPC caused by register cache misses. Thus, we proposed the Non-Latency-Oriented Register Cache System (NORCS) to solve the IPC problem with a modified pipeline. We evaluated NORCS mainly from the viewpoint of microarchitecture in the original article, and showed that NORCS maintains almost the same IPC as conventional register files. Researchers in NVIDIA adopted the same idea for their GPUs. However, the evaluation was not sufficient from the viewpoint of LSI design. In the original article, we used CACTI to evaluate the area and energy consumption. CACTI is a design space exploration tool for cache design, and adopts some rough approximations. Therefore, this paper shows design of NORCS with FreePDK45, an open source process design kit for 45nm technology. We performed manual layout of the memory cells and arrays of NORCS, and executed SPICE simulation with RC parasitics extracted from the layout. The results show that, from a full-port register file, an 8-entry NORCS achieves a 75.2% and 48.2% reduction in area and energy consumption, respectively. The results also include the latency which we did not present in our original article. The latencies of critical path is 307ps and 318ps for an 8-entry NORCS and a conventional multiported register file, respectively, when the same two cycles are allocated to register file read.

Through-silicon via (TSV) assignment problem is one of the key design challenges of 3-D IC which is crucial to the wire length and signal delay. In this work we formulate the 3-D IC TSV assignment as an Integer Minimum Cost Multi Commodity (IMCMC) problem on a IMCMC network, and propose a multi-level algorithm. It coarsens the IMCMC network level by level, applies a rough flow assignment on each level of coarsened graph, and generates only promising edges to reduce the IMCMC network size. Benefiting from the multi-level structure, we propose a mixed single and multi commodity flow method improve the TSV assignment solution quality. Moreover, given a TSV assignment, we propose an extended layer by layer algorithm to further optimize the TSV assignment. The experimental results demonstrate that our multi-level with mixed single and multi commodity flow algorithm achieves not only smaller wire length but also shorter runtime compared to other existing works.

In this paper, we study the problem of noise with regard to the perfect reconstruction of non-bandlimited signals, the class of signals having a finite number of degrees of freedom per unit time. The finite rate of innovation (FRI) method provides a means of recovering a non-bandlimited signal through using of appropriate kernels. In the presence of noise, however, the reconstruction function of this scheme may become ill-conditioned. Further, the reduced sampling rates afforded by this scheme can be accompanied by increased error sensitivity. In this paper, to obtain improved noise robustness, we propose the matrix pencil (MP) method for sample signal reconstruction, which is based on principal component analysis (PCA). Through the selection of an adaptive eigenvalue, a non-bandlimited signal can be perfectly reconstructed via a stable solution of the Yule-Walker equation. The proposed method can obtain a high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) for the reconstruction results. Herein, the method is applied to certain non-bandlimited signals, such as a stream of Diracs and nonuniform splines. The simulation results demonstrate that the MP and PCA are more effective than the FRI method in suppressing noise. The FRI method can be used in many applications, including those related to bioimaging, radar, and ultrasound imaging.

We consider the problem of two-dimensional (2-D) angles of arrival estimation using a newly proposed structure of nonuniform linear array, referred to as nested coprime array with compressed inter-element spacing (CACIS). By constructing a cross-correlation matrix of the received signals, the nested CACIS exhibits a larger number of degrees of freedom. A two-step weighted l1-norm penalty strategy is proposed to fully utilize these degrees of freedom, where the weight matrices are constructed by MUSIC spectrum function and the threshold function, respectively. The proposed method has several salient advantages over the compared method, including increased resolution and accuracy, estimating many more number of sources and suppressing spurious peaks efficiently. Simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed method.

An improved multivariate wavelet denoising algorithm combined with subspace and principal component analysis is presented in this paper. The key element is deriving an optimal orthogonal matrix that can project the multivariate observation signal to a signal subspace from observation space. Univariate wavelet shrinkage operator is then applied to the projected signals channel-wise resulting in the improvement of the output SNR. Finally, principal component analysis is performed on the denoised signal in the observation space to further improve the denoising performance. Experimental results based on synthesized and real world ECG data verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper studies H∞ control for networked control systems with packet loss. In networked control systems, packet loss is one of major weakness because the control performance deteriorates due to packet loss. H∞ control, which is one of robust control, can design a controller to reduce the influence of disturbances acting on the controlled object. This paper proposes an H∞ control design that considers packet loss as a disturbance. Numerical examples show that the proposed H∞ control design can more effectively reduce control performance deterioration due to packet loss than the conventional H∞ control design. In addition, this paper provides control performance comparisons of H∞ control and Linear Quadratic (LQ) control. Numerical examples show that the control performance of the proposed H∞ control design is better than that of the LQ control design.

This paper proposes a dynamic spectrum controlled (DSTC) channel allocation algorithm to increase the total throughput of satellite communication (SATCOM) systems. To effectively use satellite resources such as the satellite's maximum transponder bandwidth and maximum transmission power and to handle the propagation gain variation at all earth stations, the DSTC algorithm uses two new transmission techniques: spectrum compression and spectrum division. The algorithm controls various transmission parameters, such as the spectrum compression ratio, number of spectrum divisions, combination of modulation method and FEC coding rate (MODCOD), transmission power, and spectrum bandwidth to ensure a constant transmission bit rate under variable propagation conditions. Simulation results show that the DSTC algorithm achieves up to 1.6 times higher throughput than a simple MODCOD-based algorithm.

An uncorrelated asymmetric ZCZ (UA-ZCZ) sequence set is a special version of an asymmetric ZCZ (A-ZCZ) sequence set, which contains multiple subsets and each subset is a typical ZCZ sequence set. One of the most important properties of UA-ZCZ sequnence set is that two arbitrary sequences from different sequence subsets are uncorrelated sequences, whose cross-correlation function (CCF) is zeros at all shifts. Based on interleaved technique and an uncorrelated sequence set, a new UA-ZCZ sequence set is obtained via interleaving a perfect sequence. The uncorrelated property of the UA-ZCZ sequence sets is expected to be useful for avoiding inter-cell interference of QS-CDMA systems.
