  • Time-Resolved Diffuse Optical Tomography Using a Modified Generalized Pulse Spectrum Technique

    Generalized Pulse Spectrum Technique (GPST) is a method to solve the inverse problems of wave-propagation and diffusion-dominated phenomena, and therefore has been popularly applied in image reconstruction of time-resolved diffuse optical tomography. With a standard GPST for simultaneous reconstruction of absorption and scattering coefficients, the products of the gradients of the Green's function and the photon-density flux, based on the photon-diffusion equation, are required to calculate the diffusion-related Jacobian matrix. The adversities are of two-folds: time-consuming and singular in the field near the source. The latter causes a severe insensitivity of the algorithm to the scattering changes deep inside tissue. To cope with the above difficulties, we propose in this paper a modified GPST algorithm that only involves the Green's function and the photon-density flux themselves in the scattering-related matrix. Our simulated and experimental reconstructions show that the modified algorithm can significantly improve the quality of scattering image and accelerate the reconstruction process, without an evident degradation in absorption image.

  • Teletraffic Characteristics of Mobile Packet Communication Networks Considering Self-Similarity in Terminal Cell Dwell Time

    Teletraffic characteristics of a mobile packet communication network, which supports mobile Internet, were quantitatively evaluated by using a terminal migration model in which the cell dwell time possesses self-similarity. I used a migration model in which the migration speed of the terminal is determined by the density of the dwell terminals in a cell (determined from measured vehicular mobility characteristics). The transmission rates per terminal in a cell were estimated as teletraffic on the mobile packet communication networks using this migration model. I found that when there is self-similarity in the terminal cell dwell time, communicating terminals may be concentrated in the cell and restricted for an indefinite period of time to using only a narrow bandwidth.

  • An Efficient Slot Allocation Algorithm to Accommodate Multimedia Traffic in CDMA/TDD-Based Wireless Communications Systems

    Recently, code division multiple access scheme with time division duplex (CDMA/TDD) has drawn considerable attention as means to realize efficient wireless multimedia communications system. In this paper, we propose two time slot allocation algorithms for CDMA/TDD systems to efficiently accommodate multimedia traffic. Assuming a practical multiple cell environment and a multimedia service model which consists of several kinds of circuit-switched and packet-switched services with different quality of services (QoSs), we evaluate the average delay (average time from call generation to channel assignment) of the CDMA/TDD system with the proposed algorithms, and compare the performance with that of CDMA with frequency division duplex (CDMA/FDD) and time division multiple access with TDD (TDMA/TDD) systems. Our computer simulation results show that the CDMA/TDD system with one of the proposed algorithms, which can effectively avoid interference among users with different QoSs, can improve the average delay performance as compared with the other systems.

  • Methods for Estimating the Ocean Wavelength in Satellite Altimetry

    This paper presents methods for estimating the ocean wavelength in satellite altimetry and discusses the possibility of detecting the ocean wavelength. Numerical analyses show that there exists a relation between the significant wavelength and the pulse-to-pulse correlation coefficient. Presented methods are based on processing the data of existing satellite altimeters. Accordingly, we will be able to propose a method for measuring the wavelength without a large change in existing altimetry system.

  • Synchronization and Its Analysis in Chaotic Systems Coupled by Transmission Line

    In this study, synchronization phenomena in chaotic oscillators coupled by a transmission line are investigated. In particular investigation using real circuits is done for the first time. It is confirmed that the chaotic subsystems synchronize, although signals propagating along the transmission line are affected by the time delay. Further the period-doubling bifurcation with varying the time delay and anti-phase synchronization phenomena are observed in our circuit model. Also the voltage distribution of transmission line is simulated in order to investigate whether the current flowing through the transmission line is constant or not. It is found that the subsystems synchronize although the current through the transmission line keeps on varying.

    In this paper, a discrete-time convergence theorem for continuous-state Hopfield networks with self-interaction neurons is proposed. This theorem differs from the previous work by Wang in that the original updating rule is maintained while the network is still guaranteed to monotonically decrease to a stable state. The relationship between the parameters in a typical class of energy functions is also investigated, and consequently a "guided trial-and-error" technique is proposed to determine the parameter values. The third problem discussed in this paper is the post-processing of outputs, which turns out to be rather important even though it never attracts enough attention. The effectiveness of all the theorems and post-processing methods proposed in this paper is demonstrated by a large number of computer simulations on the assignment problem and the N-queen problem of different sizes.

  • Real-Time Camera Parameter Estimation for 3-D Annotation on a Wearable Vision System

    In this paper, we describe a method for estimating external camera parameters in real time. We investigated the effectiveness of this method for annotating real scenes with 3-D virtual objects on a wearable computer. The proposed method enables determining known natural feature points of objects through multiplied color histogram matching and template matching. This external-camera-parameter calculation method consists of three algorithms for PnP problems, and it uses each algorithm selectively. We implemented an experimental system based on our method on a wearable vision system. This experimental system can annotate real objects with 3D virtual objects by using the proposed method. The system was implemented in order to enable effective annotation in a mixed-reality environment on a wearable computing system. The system consists of an ultra small CCD camera set at the user's eye, an ultra small display, and a computer. This computer uses the proposed method to determine the camera parameters. It then renders virtual objects based on the camera parameters and synthesizes images on a display. The system works at 10 frames per second.

    The international telecommunication standards bodies such as ITU-T, ATM Forum, and IETF recommend the dual leaky bucket for the traffic specifications for VBR service. On the other hand, recent studies have demonstrated multiple time-scale burstiness in compressed video traffic. In order to fill this gap between the current standards and real traffic characteristics, we present a standard-compatible traffic parameter selection method based on the notion of a critical time scale (CTS). The defined algorithm is optimal in the sense that it minimizes the required amount of link capacity for a traffic flow under a maximum delay constraint. Simulation results with compressed video traces demonstrate the efficiency of the defined traffic parameter selection algorithm in resource allocation.

  • Real Time Feature-Based Facial Tracking Using Lie Algebras

    We have developed a novel human facial tracking system that operates in real time at a video frame rate without needing any special hardware. The approach is based on the use of Lie algebra, and uses three-dimensional feature points on the targeted human face. It is assumed that the roughly estimated facial model (relative coordinates of the three-dimensional feature points) is known. First, the initial feature positions of the face are determined using a model fitting technique. Then, the tracking is operated by the following sequence: (1) capture the new video frame and render feature points to the image plane; (2) search for new positions of the feature points on the image plane; (3) get the Euclidean matrix from the moving vector and the three-dimensional information for the points; and (4) rotate and translate the feature points by using the Euclidean matrix, and render the new points on the image plane. The key algorithm of this tracker is to estimate the Euclidean matrix by using a least square technique based on Lie algebra. The resulting tracker performed very well on the task of tracking a human face.

    We have developed a super-fast response OCB (Optically self-Compensated Birefringence) mode TFT-LCD by using capacitively coupled driving method (CC driving method). Response time with this driving method has been improved by the twice or more compared with that of a conventionally driven TFT-LCD. Even at a low temperature, 0 degree, this panel can response within one field time, 16.7 ms, between every gray scale levels. We developed a prototype OCB mode LCD with newly designed compensation films, that achieved a wide viewing angle characteristic of 160 degrees horizontally and 140 degrees vertically under the condition of that the contrast ratio exceeds 10:1.

    As LSIs are two-dimensional structures, the number of external pins increases at a lower rate than the corresponding increase in the number of gates on the LSI. Therefore, the number of flip-flops on a scan path increases as the density of gates on LSIs rises, resulting in longer test application times. In this paper, three novel DFT strategies aimed at reducing test application time are proposed. DFT strategy 1 is a full scan design method with test point insertion, DFT strategy 2 is a partial scan design method, and DFT strategy 3 is a partial scan design method with test point insertion. Experimental results show that these DFT strategies reduced the test application times by 45% to 82% compared with conventional full scan design methods.

  • Modeling and Performance Analysis of the IEEE 1394 Serial Bus

    The IEEE 1394 is a standard for the high performance serial bus interface. This standard has the isochronous transfer mode that is suitable for real-time applications and the asynchronous transfer mode for delay-insensitive applications. It can be used to construct a small-size local area network. We propose a queueing model for a network with this standard under some assumptions, and calculate the average waiting time of an asynchronous packet in the buffer in the steady state. We give some numerical results, along with validation by simulation, in order to evaluate its performance.

  • Optimization of Test Accesses with a Combined BIST and External Test Scheme

    External pins for tests are precious hardware resources because this number is strongly restricted. Cores are tested via test access mechanisms (TAMs) such as a test bus architecture. When cores are tested via test buses which have constant bit widths, test stimuli and test responses for a particular core have to be transported over these test buses. The core might require more widths for input and output than test buses, and hence, for some part of the test, the TAMs are idle; this is a wasteful usage of the TAMs. In this paper, an optimization method of test accesses with a combined BIST and external test (CBET) scheme is proposed for eliminating the wasteful usage of test buses. This method can minimize the test time and eliminate the wasteful usage of external pins by considering the trade-off between test time and the number of external pins. Our idea consists of two parts. One is to determine the optimum groups, each of which consists of cores, to simultaneously share mechanisms for the external test. The other is to determine the optimum bandwidth of the external input and output for the external test. Our idea is basically formulated for the purpose of eliminating the wasteful external pin usage. We make the external test part to be under the full bandwidth of external pins by considering the trade-off between the test time and the number of external pins. This is achieved only with the CBET scheme because it permits test sets for both the BIST and the external test to be elastic. Taking test bus architecture as an example, a formulation for test access optimization and experimental results are shown. Experimental results reveal that our optimization can achieve a 51.9% reduction in the test time of conventional test scheduling and our proposals are confirmed to be effective in reducing the test time of system-on-a-chip.

    A workflow is a flow of work carried out by workers, and workflow management is to automate the flow of work. In workflow management, an actual work is carried out based on the workflow, which is called case. In order to effectively meet various requirements, it is necessary to change current workflow dynamically, which is called dynamic workflow change. When the dynamic change is required, there exist cases in the workflow. In order to handle these cases and further to keep the queuing order, the dynamic change takes period of time (called transient time) until the changed workflow becomes steady state again. During the transient time, workers are forced to do irregular work, and therefore it is important to clarify if a change type takes shorter transient time. In this paper, we do the performance evaluation on transient time of dynamic workflow changes. To do so, we first give a definition of transient time, and then propose methods of computing transient time of three change types proposed by Ellis et al. Finally, we do the performance evaluation for 90 dynamic changes by computing the transient times.

    This paper proposes a non-linear adaptive algorithm, the amplitude banded RLS (ABRLS) algorithm, as an adaptation procedure for time variant channel equalizers. In the ABRLS algorithm, a coefficient matrix is updated based on the amplitude level of the received sequence. To enhance the capability of tracking for the ABRLS algorithm, a parallel adaptation scheme is utilized which involves the structures of decision feedback equalizer (DFE). Computer simulations demonstrate that the novel ABRLS based equalizer provides a significant improvement relative to the conventional RLS DFE on a rapidly time variant communication channel.

    In the theory of average-case NP-completeness, Levin introduced the polynomial domination and Gurevich did the average polynomial domination. Ben-David et al. proved that if P-samp (the class of polynomial-time samplable distributions) is polynomially dominated by P-comp (the class of polynomial-time computable distributions) then there exists no strong one-way function. This result will be strengthened by relaxing the assumption from the polynomial domination to the average polynomial domination. Our results also include incompleteness for average polynomial-time one-one reducibility from (NP,P-samp) to (NP,P-comp). To derive these and other related results, a prefix-search algorithm presented by Ben-David et al. will be modified to survive the average polynomial domination.

    This paper introduces current-mode biquad using multiple current output operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) and grounded capacitors. The circuit configuration is obtained from a second-order integrator loop structure with loss-less and lossy integrators. The proposed circuit can realize low-pass, band-pass, high-pass, band-stop and all-pass transfer functions by suitably choosing the input and output terminals. And the circuit characteristics can be electronically tuned through adjusting the transconductance gains of OTAs. It is also made clear that the proposed circuit has very low sensitivities with respect to the circuit active and passive elements. An example is given together with simulated results by PSpice.

    The imprecise computation is one of the promising schemes in the real time systems to adapt quality of computations to change of load with keeping the deadlines of tasks in the systems. When overload occurs in the systems, the minimum requirements on the deadline are assured by decreasing quality of the computation. This paper describes how to apply the concept of the imprecise computation to automobile control in the expressway assuming the intelligent transportation system (shortly, ITS). The deadline violation of tasks for automobile control in the expressway induces collision of automobiles. Regardless of whether the expressway is congested or not, collision of automobiles must be avoided. To satisfy such requirement, the concept of the imprecise computation is effective. This paper proposes an adaptive scheduling using the imprecise computation to avoid collision of automobiles and increase throughput, and shows results of simulation experiments about an adaptive scheduling for automobiles control.

    In this paper, we propose a new type of hybrid ARQ protocol, in which a channel-adaptive variable rate channel coding scheme is combined with a multi-copy retransmission strategy so as to enhance the system performance under the delay constraint of real-time ATM services in broadband radio access networks. The main feature of a multi-copy retransmission strategy in this scheme is to improve the average throughput for a given Forward Error Correction (FEC) rate, subject to the prescribed cell loss requirement of the real-time wireless ATM services, while augmenting the reliability of channel state information required for a channel-adaptive FEC scheme. Our analysis shows that under a harsh fading channel, the proposed approach is useful for achieving the prescribed cell loss performance without significantly degrading the average throughput performance.
