    In this paper, we introduce a new general construction of zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence set, which is based on two given ZCZ sequence sets. Compared with the two given sequence sets, the resultant sequence set not only has larger family size and longer period, but also provides more flexible choices of basic sequences, ZCZ length and family size.

    This paper presents an unsupervised learning-based method for selection of feature points and object category classification without previous setting of the number of categories. Our method consists of the following procedures: 1)detection of feature points and description of features using a Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), 2)selection of target feature points using One Class-Support Vector Machines (OC-SVMs), 3)generation of visual words of all SIFT descriptors and histograms in each image of selected feature points using Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), 4)formation of labels using Adaptive Resonance Theory-2 (ART-2), and 5)creation and classification of categories on a category map of Counter Propagation Networks (CPNs) for visualizing spatial relations between categories. Classification results of static images using a Caltech-256 object category dataset and dynamic images using time-series images obtained using a robot according to movements respectively demonstrate that our method can visualize spatial relations of categories while maintaining time-series characteristics. Moreover, we emphasize the effectiveness of our method for category classification of appearance changes of objects.

    In UWB systems, data symbols are transmitted and received continuously. The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processor must be able to seamlessly process input/output data. This paper presents the design and implementation of a continuous data flow parallel memory-based FFT (CF-PMBFFT) processor without the use of input buffer for pre-loading the input data. The processor realizes a memory space of two N-words and multiple processing elements (PEs) to achieve the seamless data flow and meet the design requirement. The circuit has been fabricated in TSMC 0.18 µm 1P6M CMOS process with the supply voltage of 1.8 V. Measurement results of the test chip shows that the developed CF-PMBFFT processor takes a core area of 1.97 mm2 with a power consumption of 62.12 mW for a throughput rate of 528 MS/s.

    In OFDM systems, in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) imbalances generated in the analog front-end introduce inter-channel interference and, consequently, error performance degradation. This letter provides an exact expression involving the two-dimensional (2-D) Gaussian Q-function for the error probability of an arbitrary 2-D modulated OFDM signal with I/Q imbalances. The effects of I/Q imbalances on the distribution of an AWGN and the error performance are analyzed.

    We present an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based multichannel slotted ALOHA for cognitive radio networks (OMSA-CR). The performance of an infinite population based OMSA-CR system is analyzed in terms of channel capacity, throughput, delay, and packet capture effect. We investigate the channel capacity for OMSA-CR with perfect or imperfect spectrum sensing. We introduce the proposed CR MAC based on two channel selection schemes: non-agile channel selection (NCS) and agile channel selection (ACS). Comparing them, we show the tradeoff between complexity and system performance. We verify the proposed CR system model using numerical analysis. In particular, using simulation with a finite populated linear feedback model, we observe the OMSA-CR MAC tradeoff between throughput and minimum delay whose results matched those of the analytical framework. Numerical results for the proposed system throughput are also compared to conventional MACs, including pure ALOHA based CR MAC.

    Base Station (BS) cooperation has been considered as a promising technology to mitigate co-channel interference (CCI), yielding great capacity improvement in cellular systems. In this paper, by combining frequency domain cooperation and space domain cooperation together, we design a new CCI mitigation scheme to maximize the total utility for a multi-cell OFDMA network. The scheme formulates the CCI mitigation problem as a mixture integer programming problem, which involves a joint user-set-oriented subcarrier assignment and power allocation. A computationally feasible algorithm based on Lagrange dual decomposition is derived to evaluate the optimal value of the problem. Moreover, a low-complexity suboptimal algorithm is also presented. Simulation results show that our scheme outperforms the counterparts incorporating BS cooperation in a single domain considerably, and the proposed low-complexity algorithm achieves near optimal performance.

    The Millimeter-wave Mobile Camera (MiMoCam) developed by NHK STRL uses millimeter-wave band (42 GHz/55 GHz) to transmit Hi-Vision TV picture with high quality and low latency. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology which uses a number of antennas at both the transmitter and receiver can be adapted to use to transmit higher quality Hi-Vision TV picture. The camera was intended to be used in a studio environment where there is a high degree of multi-path, however there are also many requests for the MiMoCam to be used outdoor. This will present a different channel statistics where the camera will be operating in a near line-of-sight (LOS) environment without much reflected waves. We have conducted an outdoor transmission test and measured the outdoors transmission performance of the proposed MIMO system to clarify the possibility of using the MiMoCam in outdoor environment. This paper introduces the features of the MiMoCam system and the MIMO transmission technique used in the MiMoCam and presents the findings of this outdoor test. It was also confirmed that channel correlation of the MIMO propagation channels were suppressed by using orthogonally polarized waves and bit error rate (BER) characteristics with respect to the average receiving carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) was improved. Finally, we could find the feasibility of the MiMoCam outdoor operation from these results.

    Recently there has been a surge of interest in construction of low correlation zone sequences. The purpose of this paper is to survey the known results in the area and to present an interleaved construction of binary low correlation zone sequences. The interleaved construction unifies many constructions currently available in the literature. These sequences are useful in quasi-synchronous code-division multiple access (QS-CDMA) communication systems.

    For an odd prime p, two new families of p-ary sequences of period pn-1 are constructed for odd n = 2l+1=(2m+1)e and even n = 2l = 2me, respectively. It is shown that, for a given integer ρ with 1 ≤ ρ ≤ m, the proposed sequence families both have maximum correlation magnitude , family size (pn-1)p(ρ-1)n+1, and maximum linear span .

    Vision sensors provide rich sources of information, but sensing images and processing them in real time would be a challenging task. This paper introduces a vision system using SoCBase platform and presents heuristic designs of SAD correlation algorithm as a component of the vision system. Simulation results show that the vision system is suitable for real-time applications and that the heuristic designs of SAD algorithm are worth utilizing since they save a considerable amount of space with little sacrificing in quality.

    Broadband antennas have various applications in digital terrestrial television (DTV) services. Compact broadband antennas are required for arranging in long and narrow space along the rim of a laptop display. A leaky-wave antenna using the composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) is one of the candidates for achieving the broadband antenna. However, there are not enough to design guideline of small leaky wave antennas using the CRLH-TL for UHF band. In this paper, a CRLH-TL comprising a ladder network is proposed for broadband and simple structure. The paper also discusses the design of a leaky-wave antenna with the CRLH-TL operating in the DTV band. The relation between the operating bandwidth and attenuation constant of the CRLH-TL is discussed. An antenna that can be accommodated in the limited and narrow space available in mobile terminals has to be designed. Hence, the effects of the number of cells and a finite ground plane are discussed with the purpose of achieving the miniaturization of the antenna. In this study, the transmission and radiation characteristics of the fabricated antennas are measured. The gain of the fabricated antenna is confirmed to remain almost constant even when the operating frequency is varied. The maximum gain and operating band achieved in this study are approximately -0.6 dBi and about 54%, respectively.

  • Cooperative Coding Using Cyclic Delay Diversity for OFDM Systems

    This paper proposes cooperative coding using cyclic delay diversity (CDD) for OFDM systems. The cooperative diversity is combined with channel coding while CDD is applied to the cooperative transmission of the multiple relays to improve the beneficial effects of the cooperating relays. Analyses of frame error probability (FEP) and the average channel power of the proposed scheme are shown. Simulation results show the frame error rate (FER) of the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme provides not only a simple code design and low system complexity compared to conventional space-time processing, but better FER and diversity gain compared to direct transmission and conventional cooperative coding without CDD.

    We propose a novel technique of matching at both ends of the guard trace to suppress resonance. This approach is derived from the viewpoint that the guard trace acts as a transmission line. We examined that matched termination suppresses guard-trace resonance through simulating a circuit and measuring radiation. We found from these results that the proposed method enables guard-trace voltages to remain low and hence avoids increases in radiation. In addition, we demonstrated that "matched termination at the far end of the guard trace" could suppress guard-trace resonance sufficiently at all frequencies. We eventually found that at least two vias at both ends of the guard trace and only one matching resistor at the far end could suppress guard-trace resonance. With respect to fewer vias, the method we propose has the advantage of reducing restrictions in the printed circuit board layout at the design stage.

    This paper presents spectral multi-level (M-ary) amplitude shift keying (ASK) optical code-division-multiplexing (OCDM) as a key technology for future optical access network. A novel transmitter configuration to achieve flexible scalability that is required in future optical access network is proposed. The transmitter employs pre-biasing circuits and dummy data input. Pre-biasing circuits enable us to achieve high tolerance to multiple access interference by compensating for the nonlinearity of the M-ary ASK and increase the number of multiplexed binary data streams. By inputting the dummy data into the transmitter so that the total number of multiplexed binary data streams including those that actually accommodate users/services and the dummy streams remains constant, the number of users/services can be increased up to the total number of data streams without changing the parameters for pre-biasing. Therefore, the proposed transmitter can flexibly enhance the scalability of the spectral M-ary ASK OCDM. The formulas for calculating the bit error rate characteristics are described when using the conventional and proposed transmitters. The feasibility of the proposed transmitter is verified theoretically using the established formulas.

    In this letter, a derivative constraint minimum output energy (MOE) receiver is proposed the offers enhanced robustness against carrier frequency offset (CFO). A theoretical analysis of the output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is presented to confirm its efficacy. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed receiver basically offers the same performance as an optimal receiver with no CFO present.

  • A Novel Predistorter Design for Nonlinear Power Amplifier with Memory Effects in OFDM Communication Systems Using Orthogonal Polynomials

    Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals have high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and cause large nonlinear distortions in power amplifiers (PAs). Memory effects in PAs also become no longer ignorable for the wide bandwidth of OFDM signals. Digital baseband predistorter is a highly efficient technique to compensate the nonlinear distortions. But it usually has many parameters and takes long time to converge. This paper presents a novel predistorter design using a set of orthogonal polynomials to increase the convergence speed and the compensation quality. Because OFDM signals are approximately complex Gaussian distributed, the complex Hermite polynomials which have a closed-form expression can be used as a set of orthogonal polynomials for OFDM signals. A differential envelope model is adopted in the predistorter design to compensate nonlinear PAs with memory effects. This model is superior to other predistorter models in parameter number to calculate. We inspect the proposed predistorter performance by using an OFDM signal referred to the IEEE 802.11a WLAN standard. Simulation results show that the proposed predistorter is efficient in compensating memory PAs. It is also demonstrated that the proposal acquires a faster convergence speed and a better compensation effect than conventional predistorters.

    The bit-error-rate (BER) performance predicted by the semi-analytical evolution technique proposed by Li Ping et al. becomes inaccurate for parallel concatenated coded interleave-division multiple-access (PCC-IDMA) systems. To solve this problem, we develop a novel evolution technique of such systems. Numerical results show that the predicted performance agrees well with the simulation results, and that this technique is useful for system optimization.

    In this paper, a novel orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulator/demodulator based on real-valued discrete Hartley transform (DHT) is presented and implemented for the IEEE 802.11a/g wireless local area network (LAN). Instead of the conventional complex-valued fast Fourier transform (FFT) for OFDM systems, the proposed architecture employs two real-valued fast DHT (FHT) kernels and one post processing unit. By taking advantage of the real-valued operation of FHT, this approach reduces the number of multiplications compared with the radix-2 FFT. The proposed DHT-based modulator/demodulator was designed and fabricated in 0.18-µm CMOS technology with a core area of 928935 µm2. The average power consumption is about 20.16 mW at 20 MHz and 1.8 V supply voltage. Measurement results of the integrated circuit illustrate its superior chip area and power consumption.

  • Robust Defect Size Measurement Using 3D Modeling for LCD Defect Detection in Automatic Vision Inspection System

    LCD Automatic Vision Inspection (AVI) systems automatically detect defect features and measure their sizes via camera vision. AVI systems usually report different measurements on the same defect with some variations on position or rotation mainly because we get different images. This is caused by possible variations in the image acquisition process including optical factors, non-uniform illumination, random noise, and so on. For this reason, conventional area based defect measuring method has some problems in terms of robustness and consistency. In this paper, we propose a new defect size measuring method to overcome these problems. We utilize volume information which is completely ignored in the area based conventional defect measuring method. We choose a bell shape as a defect model for experiment. The results show that our proposed method dramatically improves robustness of defect size measurement. Given proper modeling, the proposed volume based measuring method can be applied to various types of defect for better robustness and consistency.

    In this paper, we propose four new general constructions of LCZ/ZCZ sequence sets based on interleaving technique and affine transformations. A larger family of LCZ/ZCZ sequence sets with longer period are generated by these constructions, which are more flexible among the selection of the alphabet size, the period of the sequences and the length of LCZ/ZCZ, compared with those generated by the known constructions. Especially, two families of the newly constructed sequences can achieve or almost achieve the theoretic bound.
