  • Optimizing a Virtual Re-Convergence System to Reduce Visual Fatigue in Stereoscopic Camera

    In this paper, we propose an optimized virtual re-convergence system especially to reduce the visual fatigue caused by binocular stereoscopy. Our unique idea to reduce visual fatigue is to utilize the virtual re-convergence based on the optimized disparity-map that contains more depth information in the negative disparity area than in the positive area. Therefore, our system facilitates a unique search-range scheme, especially for negative disparity exploration. In addition, we used a dedicated method, using a so-called Global-Shift Value (GSV), which are the total shift values of each image in stereoscopy to converge a main object that can mostly affect visual fatigue. The experimental result, which is a subjective assessment by participants, shows that the proposed method makes stereoscopy significantly comfortable and attractive to view than existing methods.

    This paper proposes a wide-band noise reduction method using a zero phase (ZP) signal which is defined as the IDFT of a spectral amplitude. When a speech signal has periodicity in a short observation, the corresponding ZP signal becomes also periodic. On the other hand, when a noise spectral amplitude is approximately flat, its ZP signal takes nonzero values only around the origin. Hence, when a periodic speech signal is embedded in a flat spectral noise in an analysis frame, its ZP signal becomes a periodic signal except around the origin. In the proposed noise reduction method, we replace the ZP signal around the origin with the ZP signal in the second or latter period. Then, we get an estimated speech ZP signal. The major advantages of this method are that it can reduce not only stationary wide-band noises but also non-stationary wide-band noises and does not require a prior estimation of the noise spectral amplitude. Simulation results show that the proposed noise reduction method improves the SNR more than 5 dB for a tunnel noise and 13 dB for a clap noise in a low SNR environment.

    Decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes requires many arithmetic operations in the Galois field. While the software decoding of RS codes has the advantage of its flexibility to support RS codes of variable parameters, the speed of the software decoding is slower than dedicated hardware RS decoders because arithmetic operations in the Galois field on an ordinary processor require many instruction steps. To achieve fast software decoding of RS codes, it is effective to accelerate Galois operations by both dedicated circuitry and parallel processing. In this paper, an accelerator is proposed which is attached to the base processor to speed up the software decoding of RS codes by parallel execution of Galois operations.

    In the framework of decentralized supervisory control of timed discrete event systems (TDESs), each local supervisor decides the set of events to be enabled to occur and the set of events to be forced to occur under its own local observation in order for a given specification to be satisfied. In this paper, we focus on fusion rules for the enforcement decisions and adopt the combined fusion rule using the AND rule and the OR rule. We first derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a decentralized supervisor under the combined fusion rule for a given partition of the set of forcible events. We next study how to find a suitable partition.

    Kudekar et al. proved an interesting result in low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes: The belief-propagation (BP) threshold is boosted to the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold by spatial coupling. Furthermore, the authors showed that the BP threshold for code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is improved up to the optimal one via spatial coupling. In this letter, a phenomenological model for elucidating the essence of these phenomenon, called threshold improvement, is proposed. The main result implies that threshold improvement occurs for spatially-coupled general graphical models.

  • A Novel 2-D OFDM-DS-CDMA Receiver with Frequency-Time Spreading

    This paper presents a novel 2-D (2-dimension) receiver that adopts the reception scheme to promote OFDM-DS-CDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multi-carrier coded-division multiple-access) system performance. The system model includes spread coding and a system block diagram of the 2-D receiver shown graphically with 3-D (three dimensions) plots. The analytical calculation of system performance for an OFDM-DS-CDMA system combined with the proposed receiver equipment is investigated. To evaluate the results from the channel fading effect is considered over the correlated fading environments. The correlated-Nakagami-m statistical distribution is taken into account in the evaluation. The results show that the number of users, the number of subcarriers and the fading channel correlation generally affect OFDM-DS-CDMA systems. The system is also influenced by the Doppler shift and the signal propagation environment (fading parameter).

    In this letter, we introduce a knowledge reuse method to improve the performance of a learning algorithm developed to prevent interference in multi-car elevators. This method enables the algorithm to use its previously acquired experience in new learning processes. The simulation results confirm the improvement achieved in the algorithm's performance.

  • Caching-Based Multi-Swarm Collaboration for Improving Content Availability in BitTorrent

    Despite its great success, BitTorrent suffers from the content unavailability problem where peers cannot complete their content downloads due to some missing chunks, which is caused by a shortage of seeders who hold the content in its entirety. The multi-swarm collaboration approach is a natural choice for improving content availability, since content unavailability cannot be overcome by one swarm easily. Most existing multi-swarm collaboration approaches, however, suffer from content-related limitations, which limit their application scopes. In this paper, we introduce a new kind of multi-swarm collaboration utilizing a swarm as temporal storage. In a nutshell, the collaborating swarms cache some chunks of each other that are likely to be unavailable before the content unavailability happens and share the cached chunks when the content unavailability happens. Our approach enables any swarms to collaborate with each other without the content-related limitations. Simulation results show that our approach increases the number of download completions by over 50% (26%) compared to normal BitTorrent (existing bundling approach) with low overhead. In addition, our approach shows around 30% improved download completion time compared to the existing bundling approach. The results also show that our approach enables the peers participating in our approach to enjoy better performance than other peers, which can be a peer incentive.

    This paper develops the first prototype hardware for a TDD two-way multi-hop relay network with MIMO network coding. Since conventional wireless multi-hop relay networks have the drawback of low data rate, TDD two-way multi-hop relay networks have been studied as a solution to realize high data rate recently. In these networks, forward and backward streams are spatially multiplexed by using interference cancellation techniques such as MIMO beamforming or MIMO network coding. In this paper, a demonstration system for the TDD two-way multi-hop relay network with MIMO network coding (called 2-way relay network hereafter) is developed using the prototype hardware. In the demonstration system, each transmitter and receiver performs network coded broadcast and MIMO multiple access, respectively. By using the demonstration system, network throughput is measured in an indoor environment to prove the realization and effectiveness of the 2-way relay network. From the results of network throughput, it is found that the 2-way relay network can achieve high network throughput approaching theoretical upper bound even in low average end-to-end SNR area where network throughput of the direct link degrades severely. From these results, the realization and effectiveness of the 2-way relay network can be proved in the real indoor environment.

    Thin-film 2-arm Archimedean spiral antenna coupled with a bismuth (Bi) microbolometer was fabricated on a fused quartz substrate backed by cupper (Cu) plate reflector. Antenna patterns of the device agreed with the theoretical patterns derived from the imaging force model at 100 GHz band. The detected voltages of the antenna exhibited a periodic variation with changing the thickness of the substrate. The maximum and minimum detected voltages were obtained when the substrate thickness was odd and even integer multiples of a quarter of the wavelength in the substrate, respectively. Furthermore, the detected voltages were almost constant within the change of 3 dB ranging from 76.9 to 106.8 GHz. The wide band characteristic of the antenna was obtained.

    This paper presents our recent work in regard to building Large Vocabulary Continuous Speech Recognition (LVCSR) systems for the Thai, Indonesian, and Chinese languages. For Thai, since there is no word boundary in the written form, we have proposed a new method for automatically creating word-like units from a text corpus, and applied topic and speaking style adaptation to the language model to recognize spoken-style utterances. For Indonesian, we have applied proper noun-specific adaptation to acoustic modeling, and rule-based English-to-Indonesian phoneme mapping to solve the problem of large variation in proper noun and English word pronunciation in a spoken-query information retrieval system. In spoken Chinese, long organization names are frequently abbreviated, and abbreviated utterances cannot be recognized if the abbreviations are not included in the dictionary. We have proposed a new method for automatically generating Chinese abbreviations, and by expanding the vocabulary using the generated abbreviations, we have significantly improved the performance of spoken query-based search.

    In the near future, decentralized network systems consisting of a huge number of sensor nodes are expected to play an important role. In such a network, each node should control itself by means of a local interaction algorithm. Although such local interaction algorithms improve system reliability, how to design a local interaction algorithm has become an issue. In this paper, we describe a local interaction algorithm in a partial differential equation (or PDE) and propose a new design method whereby a PDE is derived from the solution we desire. The solution is considered as a pattern of nodes' control values over the network each of which is used to control the node's behavior. As a result, nodes collectively provide network functions such as clustering, collision and congestion avoidance. In this paper, we focus on a periodic pattern comprising sinusoidal waves and derive the PDE whose solution exhibits such a pattern by exploiting the Fourier method.

  • Growth Mechanism of Pentacene on HfON Gate Insulator and Its Effect on Electrical Properties of Organic Field-Effect Transistors

    Pentacene-based organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) with SiO2 and HfON gate insulators have been fabricated, and the effect of gate insulator on the electrical properties of pentacene-based OFETs and the microstructures of pentacene films were investigated. It was found that the grain size for pentacene film deposited on HfON gate insulator is larger than that for pentacene film deposited on SiO2 gate insulator. Due to the larger grain size, pentacene-based OFET with HfON gate insulator shows better electrical properties compared to pentacene-based OFET with SiO2 gate insulator. Meanwhile, low-temperature (such as 140) fabricated pentacene-based OFET with HfON gate insulator was also investigated. The OFET fabricated at 140 shows a small subthreshold swing of 0.14 V/decade, a large on/off current ratio of 4 104, a threshold voltage of -0.65 V, and a hole mobility of 0.33 cm2/Vs at an operating voltage of -2 V.

    The proposed scheduling scheme minimizes the mean power consumption of real-time tasks with probabilistic computation amounts while meeting their deadlines. Our study formally solves the minimization problem under finitely discrete clock frequencies with irregular power consumptions, whereas state-of-the-arts studies did under infinitely continuous clock frequencies with regular power consumptions.

  • A Comparative Study of Rotation Angle Estimation Methods Based on Complex Moments

    Determining the rotation angle between two images is essential when comparing images that may include rotational variation. While there are three representative methods that utilize the phases of Zernike moments (ZMs) to estimate rotation angles, very little work has been done to compare the performances of these methods. In this paper, we compare the performances of these three methods and propose a new, angular radial transform (ART)-based method. Our method extends Revaud et al.'s method [1] and uses the phase of angular radial transform coefficients instead of ZMs. We show that our proposed method outperforms the ZM-based method using the MPEG-7 shape dataset when computation times are compared or in terms of the root mean square error vs. coverage.

    Clustering technology is very important in ad hoc networks and sensor networks from the view point of reducing the traffic load and energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a new structure formation mechanism as a tool for clustering. It meets the key clustering requirements including the use of an autonomous decentralized algorithm and a consideration of the situation of individual nodes. The proposed mechanism follows the framework of autonomous decentralized control based on local interaction, in which the behavior of the whole system is indirectly controlled by appropriately designing the autonomous actions of the subsystems. As an application example, we demonstrate autonomous decentralized clustering for a two-dimensional lattice network model, and the characteristics and adaptability of the proposed method are shown. In particular, the clusters produced can reflect the environmental situation of each node given by the initial condition.

    In this paper, a fifth order curer low-pass filter using as switched-capacitor (SC) architecture is proposed and fabricated with TSMC 0.18 µm CMOS process. A fully differential SC is adopted via the bilinear transform of the corresponding analogue RLC passive prototype. To reach the largest possible input dynamic range and save chip area, the method of dynamic range scaling and minimum capacitor scaling is used. Measured results show that the proposed filter achieves a pass-band of 12.1 MHz with a sampling rate of 100 MHz, a SFDR of 50 dB, a stop-band attenuation greater than 50 dB and a power consumption of 48.5 mW at 1.8 V power supply. Including pads, the chip area occupies 1.515 (1.391.09) mm2. This paper has the feature of low noise, excellent linearity of the filter, and high stability. The experimental results show that it has perfect performance for WiMAX applications and standard is recommended.

    Visually saliency detection provides an alternative methodology to image description in many applications such as adaptive content delivery and image retrieval. One of the main aims of visual attention in computer vision is to detect and segment the salient regions in an image. In this paper, we employ matrix decomposition to detect salient object in nature images. To efficiently eliminate high contrast noise regions in the background, we integrate global context information into saliency detection. Therefore, the most salient region can be easily selected as the one which is globally most isolated. The proposed approach intrinsically provides an alternative methodology to model attention with low implementation complexity. Experiments show that our approach achieves much better performance than that from the existing state-of-art methods.

    Face image hashing is an emerging method used in biometric verification systems. In this paper, we propose a novel face image hashing method based on a new technique called discriminative projection selection. We apply the Fisher criterion for selecting the rows of a random projection matrix in a user-dependent fashion. Moreover, another contribution of this paper is to employ a bimodal Gaussian mixture model at the quantization step. Our simulation results on three different databases demonstrate that the proposed method has superior performance in comparison to previously proposed random projection based methods.

  • A Novel Change Detection Method for Unregistered Optical Satellite Images

    In this letter, we propose a novel method for change detection in multitemporal optical satellite images. Unlike the tradition methods, the proposed method is able to detect changed region even from unregistered images. In order to obtain the change detection map from the unregistered images, we first compute the sum of the color difference (SCD) of a pixel to all pixels in an input image. Then we calculate the SCD of this pixel to all pixels in the other input image. Finally, we use the difference of the two SCDs to represent the change detection map. Experiments on the multitemporal images demonstrates the good performance of the proposed method on the unregistered images.
