  • The Effect of Transverse Magnetic Field on Making & Breaking Arc Durations of Electrical Contact

    Application of transverse magnetic field (TMF) is one of the most important ways to improve electric life and breaking capacity of DC relays. For better understanding of dependence of arc durations on transverse magnetic field, a series of experiments were conducted under an external transverse magnetic field with 12 pairs of AgSnO2 contacts in a DC 28 V 60 A/30 A/5 A circuit, respectively. By using permanent magnets, the transverse magnetic field was obtained and the magnetic flux density at the gap center was varied from 13 to 94 mT. The results show that breaking arc duration is decreased monotonically with increases in the magnetic flux density, but making arc duration isn't decreased monotonically with increases in the magnetic flux density. In addition, both the magnetic flux density and the breaking arc duration have threshold values Bl and Tbmin, respectively, which means the breaking arc duration is almost stable with the value Tbmin even if the magnetic flux density is higher than Bl.

    In a shared medium communication system, mobile users contend for channel access according to a given set of rules to avoid collisions and achieve efficient use of the medium. If one or more users do not comply with the agree rules either due to selfish or malicious behaviours, they will cause some impacts on the system performance, especially to the well-behaved users. In this paper, we consider the problem of user misbehaviours on the performance of a wireless infrastructure-based network using reservation-based MAC protocols. Key misbehaving strategies possible in such a network are identified and explained. To quantify the impact of these misbehaviours upon the network performance, three different misbehaving scenarios are developed to allow a systematic investigation of each misbehaving strategy. For each scenario, we have derived mathematical formulations for evaluating and analyzing the key performance metrics, i.e., probabilities of success of well-behaved and misbehaved users and the fairness index. Numerical results show that the presence of misbehaviours can cause different levels of damage depending on the misbehavior strategy used. The combined multi-token and increasing permission probability strategies where the misbehaved user selfishly accesses the channel more times and with higher probabilities than allowed is shown to cause the most severe impairment of performance and fairness.

    This paper presents a method of measuring the traffic of IP multicast streaming, such as IPTV, by using IPFIX and PSAMP. The IP multicast streaming service has recently become one of the popular network services, but no IP multicast operation method has been established yet. In particular, traffic measurement of IP multicast streaming encounters two challenges: as monitoring a multicast path tree and QoS measurement. There is no method to monitor them continuously in large-scale networks. Hence, we explore measurement structure suitable for large-scale networks, and then using IPFIX and PSAMP, we propose an efficient a network-level quality measurement method for IPTV and a method to extract multicast path tree data. In addition, we demonstrate the feasibility of the measurement method by evaluating a prototype system.

    In this letter, a quantization error-aware Tomlinson-Harashinma Precoding (THP) is proposed based on the equivalent zero-forcing (ZF) criterion in Multiuser Multiple-Input Single-Output (MU-MISO) systems with limited feedback, where the transmitter has only quantized channel direction information (CDI). This precoding scheme is robust to the channel uncertainties arising from the quantization error and the lack of channel magnitude information (CMI). Our simulation results show that the new THP scheme outperforms the conventional precoding scheme in limited feedback systems with respect to Bit Error Ratio (BER).

    The periodogram scheme is a versatile method for large frequency offset estimation which requires preambles, in general, and only a few reference signals. However, the drawback of the conventional scheme is its inaccuracy in detecting the integer part of frequency offset which dominates the accuracy of frequency offset estimation. In order to increase the accuracy of the estimation, we directly interpolate a coefficient of the periodogram. The conventional periodogram and proposed schemes are compared in terms of the mean square error performance in the long term evolution system. The performance of the proposed method is compared with the conventional one and the simulation results indicate the better performance of the proposed one.

  • MMSE-Based Precoders for Cooperative MIMO Systems with Direct Link

    We propose linear precoders which jointly minimize the mean-squared error of estimated symbol at the destination node for cooperative multiple-input multiple-output communication systems. Unlike the existing precoders which require high computational complexity to solve the optimization problem on the direct link, the proposed precoder is expressed in a closed-form. Simulation results show that the proposed precoder outperforms the existing precoders in the low SNR region. Moreover, we observe that the proposed iterative algorithm is not sensitive to the initial matrices.

    In this letter, we propose a dissimilarity metric (DM) to measure the deviation of a cognitive radio from the network in terms of local sensing reports. Utilizing the probability mass function of the DM, we present a dissimilarity-based attacker detection algorithm to distinguish Byzantine attackers from honest users. The proposed algorithm is able to identify the attackers without a priori information of the attacking styles and is robust against both independent and dependent attacks.

    This paper customizes Goal/Question/Metric (GQM) project monitoring models for various projects and organizations to take advantage of the data from the software tool EPM and to allow the tailoring of the interpretation models based upon the context and success criteria for each project and organization. The basic idea is to build less concrete models that do not include explicit baseline values to interpret metrics values. Instead, we add hypothesis and interpretation layers to the models to help people of different projects make decisions in their own context. We applied the models to two industrial projects, and found that our less concrete models could successfully identify typical problems in software projects.

    The non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) has been applied successfully to model nonstationary counting phenomena for a large class of problems. In software reliability engineering, the NHPP-based software reliability models (SRMs) are of a very important class. Since NHPP is characterized by its rate (intensity) function, which is known as the software failure rate of NHPP-based SRM, it is of great interest to estimate accurately the rate function from observed software failure data. In the existing work the same authors introduced a Haar-wavelet-based technique for this problem and found that the Haar wavelet transform provided a very powerful performance in estimating software failure rate. In this paper, we consider the application potentiality of a Daubechies wavelet estimator in the estimation of software failure rate, given the software failure time data. We give practical solutions by overcoming technical difficulties in applying the Daubechies wavelet estimator to the real software failure time data.

  • Robust and Resilient Data Collection Protocols for Multihop Wireless Sensor Networks

    Robustness is one of the significant properties in wireless sensor networks because sensor nodes and wireless links are subjected to frequent failures. Once these failures occur, system performance falls into critical condition due to increases in traffic and losses of connectivity and reachability. Most of the existing studies on sensor networks, however, do not conduct quantitative evaluation on robustness and do not discuss what brings in robustness. In this paper, we define and evaluate robustness of wireless sensor networks and show how to improve them. By computer simulation, we show that receiver-initiated MAC protocols are more robust than sender-initiated ones and a simple detour-routing algorithm has more than tripled robustness than the simple minimum-hop routing algorithm.

  • Microscopic Local Binary Pattern for Texture Classification

    This paper presents a Microscopic Local Binary Pattern (MLBP) for texture classification. The conventional LBP methods which rely on the uniform patterns discard some texture information by merging the nonuniform patterns. MLBP preserves the information by classifying the nonuniform patterns using the structure similarity at microscopic level. First, the nonuniform patterns are classified into three groups using the macroscopic information. Second, the three groups are individually divided into several subgroups based on the microscopic structure information. The experiments show that MLBP achieves a better result compared with the other LBP related methods.

    The present paper proposes a new method for constructing polyphase asymmetric zero-correlation zone (A-ZCZ) sequence sets. The proposed method can generate A-ZCZ sequence sets that cannot be obtained from methods proposed by other researchers and is a generalized version of our previously proposed method. An A-ZCZ sequence set can be regarded as a ZCZ sequence set. The newly obtained A-ZCZ sequence sets include quasi-optimal ZCZ sequence sets of which the zero-cross-correlation zone (ZCCZ) length between different sequence subsets is larger than the mathematical upper bound of conventional ZCZ sequence sets. A new method for extending the A-ZCZ sequence sets is also presented in the present paper.

  • A Statistical Testing Method for Accurate Assessment of Packet Loss Probability

    In this letter, we propose a packet loss probability (PLP) assessment method that uses active measurements. Considering the statistical nature of measurement data in a network, we adopt the confidence interval to assess whether the performance of a network complies with a target PLP or not. Using both analysis and simulations, we show that the proposed method can guarantee that the probabilities of erroneous assessments are not more than a given significance level. In addition, we provide a systematic method to determine the number of probing packets needed for statistical assurance by presenting a clear relation between the assessment accuracy and the measurement overhead.

    This letter presents a robust receiver using the generalized sidelobe canceller aided with the high-order derivative constraint technique for multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) uplink against carrier frequency offset (CFO). Numerical results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed receiver.

    This letter discusses the applicability of boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving to pairwise testing in practice. Due to its recent rapid advance, using SAT solving seems a promising approach for search-based testing and indeed has already been practiced in test generation for pairwise testing. The previous approaches use SAT solving either for finding a small test set in the absence of parameter constraints or handling constraints, but not for both. This letter proposes an approach that uses a SAT solver for constructing a test set for pairwise testing in the presence of parameter constraints. This allows us to make full use of SAT solving for pairwise testing in practice.

    A low-complexity method for angle estimation in Multiple-input multiple-output radar (MIMO) radar is presented. In this approach, the signal subspace can be spanned by the orthogonal vectors which are obtained by Multi-stage Wiener Filter (MSWF), then the ESPRIT method can be used to estimate direction of departures (DODs) and direction of arrivals (DOAs). Compared with the conventional ESPRIT algorithm, the proposed method does not involve estimation of the covariance matrix and its eigen-decomposition, which alleviates remarkably the computational complexity. Moreover, the proposed method achieves the similar angle estimation performance. Simulation results are presented to verify the efficiency of the proposed method.

    In this paper, we propose a soft-decoding near-ML MIMO demodulation scheme that achieves near optimal performance with fixed and low complexity. Exploiting the regular structure of bit-to-symbol mapping, the proposed scheme performs hard demodulation to find the first candidate symbol for each stream followed by selection of nearby candidate points such that at least one candidate exists for the computation of likelihood information of bit 0 and 1 without intermediate calculation of the Euclidean distance. This demodulation scheme enables an improvement in performance by guaranteeing the existence of candidates and a significant reduction in the number of distance calculations which is a major complexity burden. The performance is evaluated by computer simulation, and computational complexity is also assessed in terms of the number of complex multiplication.

    The circuit switching device by the electrical contact needs the high reliability and long lifetime. The very important factor for the high reliability, long lifetime and electromagnetic noise of the electrical contact is to suppress the duration and electromagnetic noise of arc discharge. Usually, the suppression of arc duration method is applying the external magnetic field. But, this method was not able to suppress the metallic arc duration and increased the voltage fluctuation at arc duration. Therefore, the new method for suppressing the duration and noise for electrical contact is expected. In this paper, a new method for suppressing duration and EM noise of arc discharge by applying housing pressure is proposed. To investigate the availability of proposed method, the measurement and some considerations on arc duration, voltage-fluctuation and current noise up to GHz frequency band generated by breaking contact in the applied pressure relay housing are reported. Firstly, voltage waveform and duration of the arc are measured. The effects of the pressure in the relay housing on the duration of the metallic and gaseous phase arcs are discussed. Secondary, voltage fluctuation, the spectrogram of contact voltage and current noise up to GHz frequency band are discussed. In the results, the proposed method with applying pressure makes shorter both durations of metallic and gaseous phases. The shorter duration of metallic phase is an advantage of the proposed method beyond the applying external magnetic field. As the housing pressure is increase, the voltage fluctuation and current noise becomes smalls. The proposed method can suppress the voltage fluctuation as well as arc duration. Consequently, the proposed method is on of the good solution to suppress the duration and electromagnetic noise of the arc discharge from electrical contact and result of this study indicates the basic considerations necessary to ensure good lifetime and EMC designs for electrical contacts.

    In this letter, we propose a GRid-based Indexing scheme on Multiple channels (GRIM) for processing spatial window queries in non-flat wireless spatial data broadcasting. When the clients access both popular and regular items simultaneously, GRIM provides the clients with improved access time by broadcasting popular items separately from regular ones in units of grid cells over multiple channels. Simulations show that the proposed GRIM outperforms the existing indexing scheme in terms of the access time.
