    We have developed a compact double-gate metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor model for circuit simulation considering the volume inversion effect by solving the Poisson equation explicitly. It is verified that applied voltage dependence of the calculated potential values both at the surface and at the center of the silicon layer reproduce 2 dimensional device simulation results for any device structure, confirming the validity of the model for device optimization.

    A test structure to analyze asymmetry and orientation dependence of MOSFETs is presented. n-MOSFETs with 8 different channel orientation and three kinds of process conditions were measured and symmetry characteristics of IDsat and IBmax with respect to the interchange of source and drain was examined. Although both IDsat and IBmax have similar channel orientation dependence, IBmax in interchanged S/D measurements shows asymmetrical characteristics, which can be applied to a sensitive method for device asymmetry detection.

  • A CMOS Low Dropout Regulator with Extended Stable Region for the Effective Series Resistance of the Output Capacitor

    In this paper, a new compensation scheme and a corresponding pass element structure for a CMOS low-dropout regulator (LDO) are presented. The proposed approach effectively alleviates the strict stability constraint on the ESR of the output capacitor. Stability of a CMOS LDO with the conventional compensation requires the effective series resistance (ESR) of the output capacitor in a tunnel-like region. With the proposed design approach, an LDO can be stable using an output capacitor without ESR. A 2.5 V/150 mA LDO has been implemented using a 0.5-µm 1P2M CMOS process. The experimental results illustrate that the proposed LDO is stable with an output capacitor of 0.33 µF and no ESR.

    Let M(y) be a matrix whose entries are polynomial in y, λ(y) and v(y) be a set of eigenvalue and eigenvector of M(y). Then, λ(y) and v(y) are algebraic functions of y, and λ(y) and v(y) have their power series expansionsλ(y) = β0 + β1 y + + βk yk + (βj C),(1) v(y) = γ0 + γ1 y + + γk yk + (γj Cn), (2)provided that y=0 is not a singular point of λ(y) or v(y). Several algorithms are already proposed to compute the above power series expansions using Newton's method (the algorithm in [4]) or the Hensel construction (the algorithm in[5],[12]). The algorithms proposed so far compute high degree coefficients βk and γk, using lower degree coefficients βj and γj (j=0,1,,k-1). Thus with floating point arithmetic, the numerical errors in the coefficients can accumulate as index k increases. This can cause serious deterioration of the numerical accuracy of high degree coefficients βk and γk, and we need to check the accuracy. In this paper, we assume that given matrix M(y) does not have multiple eigenvalues at y=0 (this implies that y=0 is not singular point of λ(y) or v(y)), and presents an algorithm to estimate the accuracy of the computed power series βi,γj in (1) and (2). The estimation process employs the idea in [9] which computes a coefficient of a power series with Cauchy's integral formula and numerical integrations. We present an efficient implementation of the algorithm that utilizes Newton's method. We also present a modification of Newton's method to speed up the procedure, introducing tuning parameter p. Numerical experiments of the paper indicates that we can enhance the performance of the algorithm by 1216%, choosing the optimal tuning parameter p.

  • Several Families of Sequences with Low Correlation and Large Linear Span

    In DS-CDMA systems and DS-UWB radios, low correlation of spreading sequences can greatly help to minimize multiple access interference (MAI) and large linear span of spreading sequences can reduce their predictability. In this letter, new sequence sets with low correlation and large linear span are proposed. Based on the construction Tr1m[Trmn(αbt+γiαdt)]r for generating p-ary sequences of period pn-1, where n=2m, d=upm v, b=u v, γi GF(pn), and p is an arbitrary prime number, several methods to choose the parameter d are provided. The obtained sequences with family size pn are of four-valued, five-valued, six-valued or seven-valued correlation and the maximum nontrivial correlation value is (u+v-1)pm-1. The simulation by a computer shows that the linear span of the new sequences is larger than that of the sequences with Niho-type and Welch-type decimations, and similar to that of [10].

    This paper studies two kinds of simple switched dynamical systems with piecewise constant characteristics. The first one is based on the single buck converter whose periodic/chaotic dynamics are analyzed precisely using the piecewise linear phase map. The second one is based on a paralleled system of the buck converters for lower voltages with higher current capabilities. Referring to the results of the single system, it is clarified that stable multi-phase synchronization is always possible by the proper use of the switching strategies and adjustment of the clock period. Presenting a simple test circuit, typical operations are confirmed experimentally.

    In this paper, we propose a new localization algorithm and improve the DV-Hop algorithm by using a differential error correction scheme that is designed to reduce the location error accumulated over multiple hops. This scheme needs no additional hardware support and can be implemented in a distributed way. The proposed method can improve location accuracy without increasing communication traffic and computing complexity. Simulation results show the performance of the proposed algorithm is superior to that of the DV-Hop algorithm.

    In this paper, a new large spreading code set with a uniform low cross-correlation is proposed. The proposed code set is capable of (1) increasing the number of assigned user (capacity) in a multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system and (2) reducing the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In this paper, we derive a new code set and present an example to demonstrate performance improvements of OFDM and MC-CDMA systems. Our proposed code set with code length of N has K=2N+1 number of codes for supporting up to (2N+1) users and exhibits lower cross correlation properties compared to the existing spreading code sets. Our results with subcarrier N=16 confirm that the proposed code set outperforms the current pseudo-orthogonal carrier interferometry (POCI) code set with gain of 5 dB at bit-error-rate (BER) level of 10-4 in the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and gain of more than 3.6 dB in a multipath fading channel.

    The spectral efficiency of cooperative relaying in interference-limited environments in which a given channel is spatially reused is investigated. Cooperative relaying is a promising technique that uses neighboring stations to forward the data toward the destination in order to achieve spatial diversity gain. It has been reported that by introducing cooperative relaying into communication between an isolated source-destination pair, the error rate or spectral efficiency is generally improved. However, it is not intuitively clear whether cooperative relaying can improve the performance in interference-limited environments because the simultaneous transmission of multiple stations increases the number of interference signals. Assuming the most fundamental cooperative relaying arrangement, which consists of only one relay station, numerical results reveal that cooperative relaying is not always superior to non-cooperative single-hop and two-hop transmissions in terms of spectral efficiency.

  • Combining Attention Model with Hierarchical Graph Representation for Region-Based Image Retrieval

    The manifold-ranking algorithm has been successfully adopted in content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in recent years. However, while the global low-level features are widely utilized in current systems, region-based features have received little attention. In this paper, a novel attention-driven transductive framework based on a hierarchical graph representation is proposed for region-based image retrieval (RBIR). This approach can be characterized by two key properties: (1) Since the issue about region significance is the key problem in region-based retrieval, a visual attention model is chosen here to measure the regions' significance. (2) A hierarchical graph representation which combines region-level with image-level similarities is utilized for the manifold-ranking method. A novel propagation energy function is defined which takes both low-level visual features and regional significance into consideration. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach shows the satisfactory retrieval performance compared to the global-based and the block-based manifold-ranking methods.

    This paper studies the rotation map with a controlling segment. As a parameter varies, the map exhibits superstable periodic orbits, chaos and rich bifurcation phenomena. The map is applicable to an A/D converter having efficient resolution characteristics. The converter can be realized as a circuit model based on a spiking neuron and the rate-coding. Presenting a test circuit, basic operation is confirmed experimentally.

    This investigation applies the adaptive fuzzy-neural observer (AFNO) to synchronize a class of unknown chaotic systems via scalar transmitting signal only. The proposed method can be used in synchronization if nonlinear chaotic systems can be transformed into the canonical form of Lur'e system type by the differential geometric method. In this approach, the adaptive fuzzy-neural network (FNN) in AFNO is adopted on line to model the nonlinear term in the transmitter. Additionally, the master's unknown states can be reconstructed from one transmitted state using observer design in the slave end. Synchronization is achieved when all states are observed. The utilized scheme can adaptively estimate the transmitter states on line, even if the transmitter is changed into another chaos system. On the other hand, the robustness of AFNO can be guaranteed with respect to the modeling error, and external bounded disturbance. Simulation results confirm that the AFNO design is valid for the application of chaos synchronization.

  • Mechanisms of Human Sensorimotor-Learning and Their Implications for Brain Communication Open Access

    Humans have a remarkable ability to flexibly control various objects such as tools. Much evidence suggests that the internal models acquired in the central nervous system (CNS) support flexible control. Internal models are neural mechanisms that mimic the input-output properties of controlled objects. In a series of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies, we demonstrate how the CNS acquires and switches internal models for dexterous use of many tools. In the first study, we investigated human cerebellar activity when human subjects learned how to use a novel tool (a rotated computer mouse, where the cursor appears in a rotated position) and found that activity reflecting an internal model of the novel tool increases in the lateral cerebellum after learning how to use the tool. In the second study, we investigated the internal-model activity after sufficient training in the use of two types of novel tools (the rotated mouse and a velocity mouse, where the cursor's velocity is proportional to mouse's position) and found that the cerebellar activities for the two tools were spatially segregated. In the third study, we investigated brain activity associated with the flexible switching of tools. We found that the activity related to switching internal models was in the prefrontal lobe (area 46 and the insula), the parietal lobe, and the cerebellum. These results suggest that internal models in the cerebellum represent input-output properties of the tools as modulators of continuous signals. The cerebellar abilities in adaptive modulation of signals can be used to enhance the control signals in communications between the brain and computers.

  • Enhancement of Beaconless Location-Based Routing with Signal Strength Assistance for Ad-Hoc Networks

    Routing in Ad-hoc networks is unreliable due to the mobility of the nodes. Location-based routing protocols, unlike other protocols which rely on flooding, excel in network scalability. Furthermore, new location-based routing protocols, like, e.g. BLR [1] , IGF [2], & CBF [3] have been proposed, with the feature of not requiring beacons in MAC-layer, which improve more in terms of scalability. Such beaconless routing protocols can work efficiently in dense network areas. However, these protocols' algorithms have no ability to avoid from routing into sparse areas. In this article, historical signal strength has been added as a factor into the BLR algorithm, which avoids routing into sparse area, and consequently improves the global routing efficiency.

    This paper studies packet scheduling schemes with QoE (user-level QoS) guarantee for audio-video transmission in a wireless LAN with HCF controlled channel access (HCCA) of the IEEE 802.11e MAC protocol. We first propose the static scheduling (SS) scheme, which grants adjustable transmission opportunity (TXOP) duration for constant bit rate (CBR) traffic. The SS scheme can determine the minimum TXOP duration capable of guaranteeing high QoE; it can maximize the number of admitted flows. As the burstiness of variable bit rate (VBR) traffic cannot be absorbed by the SS scheme, we also propose the multimedia priority dynamic scheduling (MPDS) scheme, which can absorb the burstiness through allocating additional TXOP duration. We then compare the SS scheme, the MPDS scheme, and the reference scheduler (TGe scheme) in terms of application-level QoS and user-level QoS (QoE). Numerical results show that in the SS scheme, the QoE can be kept relatively higher even when the TXOP duration is reduced in the case of video with the I picture pattern; this implies that more flows can be admitted. In the case of video with the IPPPPP picture pattern, which has the VBR characteristic more remarkably, reducing the TXOP duration according to the SS scheme will deteriorate the QoS level. In this case, the MPDS scheme performs better when the number of multimedia stations is small. However, the performance of the MPDS scheme deteriorates with the increase of the number of multimedia stations, though the results are comparable to or even better than those of the SS and TGe schemes.

    In this letter, we address a carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator with a large estimation range for ultra-wideband multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (UWB MB-OFDM) systems. We find by simulations that the proposed CFO estimator yields an improved estimation range, maintaining the same estimation performance and complexity in comparison with the conventional estimator.

    In mobile communication systems, high speed packet data services are demanded. In the high speed data transmission, throughput degrades severely due to severe inter-path interference (IPI). Recently, we proposed a random transmit power control (TPC) to increase the uplink throughput of DS-CDMA packet mobile communications. In this paper, we apply IPI cancellation in addition to the random TPC. We derive the numerical expression of the received signal-to-interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) and introduce IPI cancellation factor. We also derive the numerical expression of system throughput when IPI is cancelled ideally to compare with the Monte Carlo numerically evaluated system throughput. Then we evaluate, by Monte-Carlo numerical computation method, the combined effect of random TPC and IPI cancellation on the uplink throughput of DS-CDMA packet mobile communications.

  • Acoustic OFDM System and Performance Analysis

    This paper presents a technology for short-range communications using sound wave, in which the modulated data signal can be transmitted in parallel with regular audio without significantly degrading the quality of the sound. The technology, which we call Acoustic OFDM, replaces the high frequency band of the audio signal with OFDM carriers, each of which is power-controlled according to the spectrum envelope of the original audio signal. It can provide data transmission of several hundreds bps. The implemented Acoustic OFDM system enables the transmission of short text messages from loud speakers to mobile devices at a distance of around 3 m.

  • Zero-Correlation Zone Sequence Set Constructed from a Perfect Sequence and a Complementary Sequence Pair

    The present paper introduces the construction of a class of sequence sets with zero-correlation zones called zero-correlation zone sequence sets. The proposed zero-correlation zone sequence set can be generated from an arbitrary perfect sequence and an arbitrary Golay complementary sequence pair. The proposed construction is a generalization of the zero-correlation zone sequence construction previously reported by the present author. The proposed sequence set can successfully provide CDMA communication without co-channel interference.

  • Energy-Aware Error Correction for QoS-Provisioning Real-Time Communications in Wireless Networks

    A key issue in QoS-provisioning real-time wireless communications is to provide the QoS requirement with low energy consumption. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient error correction scheme for real-time communications with QoS requirements in wireless networks. The QoS requirement of a message stream is modeled with (m, k) constraint, implying that at least m messages should be sent to a receiver during any window of k periods. The proposed scheme adaptively selects an error correcting code in an energy-efficient manner so that it maximizes the number of QoS provisionings per unit energy consumption.
