  • Double Relaxation Oscillation SQUID Systems for Biomagnetic Multichannel Measurements

    Multichannel superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) systems based on double relaxation oscillation SQUIDs (DROS) were developed for measuring magnetocardiography (MCG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals. Since DROS provides large flux-to-voltage transfer coefficients, about 10 times larger than the DC SQUIDs, direct readout of the SQUID output was possible using compact room-temperature electronics. Using DROSs, we fabricated two types of multichannel systems; a 37-channel magnetometer system with circular sensor distribution for measuring radial components of MEG signals, and two planar gradiometer systems of 40-channel and 62-channel measuring tangential components of MCG or MEG signals. The magnetometer system has external feedback to eliminate magnetic coupling with adjacent channels, and reference vector magnetometers were installed to form software gradiometers. The field noise of the magnetometers is around 3 fT/ at 100 Hz inside a magnetically shielded room. The planar gradiometer systems have integrated first-order gradiometer in thin-film form with a baseline of 40 mm. The magnetic field gradient noise of the planar gradiometers is about 1 fT/cm/ at 100 Hz. The planar gradiometers were arranged to measure field components tangential to the body surface, providing efficient measurement of especially MCG signals with smaller sensor coverage than the conventional normal component measurements.

  • Frequency-Domain Pre-Equalization Transmit Diversity for MC-CDMA Uplink Transmission

    Recently, multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) has been attracting much attention for the broadband wireless access in the next generation mobile communications systems. In the case of uplink transmissions, the orthogonality among users' signals is lost since each user's signal goes through different fading channel and hence, multi-access interference (MAI) is produced, thereby significantly degrading the transmission performance compared to the downlink case. The use of frequency-domain equalization at the receiver cannot sufficiently suppress the MAI. In this paper, we propose frequency-domain pre-equalization transmit diversity (FPTD), which employs pre-equalization using multiple transmit antennas with transmit power constraint, in order to transform a frequency-selective channel seen at a receiver close to the frequency-nonselective channel. We theoretically analyze the bit error rate (BER) performance achievable with the proposed FPTD and the analysis is confirmed by computer simulation.

  • Characteristic Comparison between Electric Currents on Upper and Lower Surfaces of Patch Conductor in a Microstrip Antenna

    The electric currents on the upper, lower and side surfaces of the patch conductor in a circular microstrip antenna are calculated by using the integral equation method and the characteristic between the electric currents on the upper and lower surfaces is compared. The integral equation is derived from the boundary condition that the tangential component of the total electric field due to the electric currents on the upper, lower and side surfaces of the patch conductor vanishes on the upper, lower and side surfaces of the patch conductor. The electric fields are derived by using Green's functions in a layered medium due to a horizontal and a vertical electric dipole on those surfaces. The result of numerical calculation shows that the electric current on the lower surface is much bigger than that on the upper surface and the input impedance of microstrip antenna depends on the electric current on the lower surface.

    This paper proposes a distributed adaptive routing algorithm that may be applied to inter-domain calls passing over any type of network topology, traffic management and switching techniques on the path, while carrying bidirectional traffic with multiple QoS requirements. The path is searched within a contour area restricted by the number of hops between source and destination while the end-to-end admission of calls is controlled at source node and each hop's admission at each node, reflecting the latest resources availability and network conditions for the given QoS requirements. Performance analysis in various conditions shows good applicability in real networks.

    OFDM, MC-CDMA and DS-CDMA are being researched vigorously as the prospective signaling technique for the next generation mobile communications systems, which will be characterized by the broadband packet technology. With packet transmissions, hybrid ARQ (HARQ) will be inevitable for error control. HARQ with rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes is one of the promising techniques. Data rate equivalent to the OFDM system can be attained with MC-CDMA and DS-CDMA by assigning all the available codes to the same user resulting in what is commonly referred to as multicode MC-CDMA and multicode DS-CDMA. A rake receiver is used for receiving the DS-CDMA signals. However, recently minimum mean square error frequency-domain equalization (MMSE-FDE) has been proposed for the reception of DS-CDMA signals. In this paper, we introduce RCPT HARQ to DS-CDMA with MMSE-FDE and compare its throughput performance with OFDM, multicode MC-CDMA and multicode DS-CDMA with rake combining. MMSE weight for packet combining is introduced and the soft value generation for turbo coding in MC-CDMA and DS-CDMA with MMSE-FDE is presented. The throughput is theoretically evaluated for the uncoded case. For RCPT-HARQ, the comparison is done by computer simulations. It is found that the throughput of HARQ using DS-CDMA with MMSE-FDE is the same as or better than using MC-CDMA. However, with higher level modulation, type I HARQ using OFDM is better than using either MC-CDMA or DS-CDMA; for type II HARQ without redundancy in the first transmission, however, MC-CDMA and DS-CDMA gives a higher throughput.

    In the Multi Carrier (MC)-CDMA system, the frequency diversity gain is obtained by its being spread in the frequency domain. The frequency interleaving technique can improve the frequency diversity gain. In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance in the MC-CDMA system which adopts the frequency interleaving scheme in the frequency selective fading channel is evaluated by computer simulation. In this simulation, orthogonal restoration combining (ORC) and minimum mean square error combining (MMSEC) are considered as frequency equalization combining techniques. This paper shows that BER performance with the frequency interleaver is better than without it in various environments.

    A new data-aided carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation technique is presented for correlative coded OFDM systems in the presence of strong multipath. Different from traditional data-aided estimation techniques, the technique estimates CFO by detecting amplitude of pilots rather than their phase shift and removes effects on CFO estimation due to intercarrier interference by an iterative compensation method. A theoretical analysis of its performance has been derived and simulation results comparing the new technique with a traditional data-aided estimation technique are presented.

    Polynomial cancellation coding (PCC) was proposed to mitigate the sever inter-carrier-interference (ICI) in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system caused by frequency offset. In this paper, we consider the effectiveness of PCC under time-variant multi-path Rayleigh fading analytically and by simulations. We first consider an analytical expression of the signal-to-interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) and then derive an approximation of the bit-error-rate (BER) of the OFDM-PCC system under the assumption that ICI is well approximated by a white Gaussian noise. Since the bandwidth efficiency of OFDM-PCC is half of that of normal OFDM, we compare the BER performance of the scheme with the normal OFDM system of the same bit-rate when low, medium, and high level modulations are used. Our results show that OFDM-PCC performs well even for high modulation level under time-varying multi-path fading.

  • Error Estimations of Arnoldi-Based Interconnect Model-Order Reductions

    Projection-based model reductions become a necessity for efficient interconnect modeling and simulations. In order to choose the order of the reduced system that can really reflect the essential dynamics of the original interconnect, the residual error of the transfer function can be considered as a stopping criteria to terminate the Arnoldi iteration process. Analytical expressions of this residual error are derived in detail. Furthermore, it can be found that the approximate transfer function can also be expressed as the original interconnect model with some additive perturbations. The perturbation matrix only involves resultant vectors at the previous step of the Arnoldi algorithm. These error information will provide a guideline for the order selection scheme used in the Krylov subspace model-order algorithm.

    This paper describes a new probabilistic sentence reduction method using maximum entropy model. In contrast to previous methods, the proposed method has the ability to produce multiple best results for a given sentence, which is useful in text summarization applications. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves on earlier methods in both accuracy and computation time.

    This paper presents a novel method to speed up neural network (NN) based face detection systems. NN-based face detection can be viewed as a classification and search problem. The proposed method formulates the face search problem as an integer nonlinear optimization problem (INLP) and expands the basic particle swarm optimization (PSO) to handle it. PSO works with a population of particles, each representing a subwindow in an input image. The subwindows are evaluated by how well they match a NN based face filter. A face is indicated when the filter response of the best particle is above a given threshold. Experiments on a set of 42 test images show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Moreover, the effect of PSO parameter settings on the search performance was investigated.

  • Dynamic Range Compression Characteristics Using an Interpolating Polynomial for Digital Audio Systems

    An audio signal level compressor is presented, which is based on the approximation algorithm using an interpolating polynomial. To implement a compression characteristic in a digital audio system, a power calculation with fractional numbers is required and it is difficult to be performed directly in digital circuits. We introduce a polynomial expression to approximate the power operation, then the gain calculation is easily performed with a number of additions, multiplications and a division. Newton's interpolation formula is used to calculate the compression characteristics in a very short time and the obtained compression characteristics are very close to the ideal ones.

  • Direct Decoder of Uplink Space-Time Block Coded MC-CDMA Systems

    The uplink of a space-time block coded multicarrier modulation code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system equipped with a uniform linear array (ULA) at the base station is studied. A blind decoder that provides closed-form solutions of both transmitted symbol sequences and directions of arrival (DOAs) for all active users in one macrocell is derived without the uplink space-time vector channel estimation. The decoder uses an ESPRIT-like method to separate multiple co-channel users with different impinging DOAs. As a result, the DOAs of multiple users are obtained. In particular, a set of signal spaces, every one of which is spanned by the coded symbol sequences of an individual user, are also obtained. From these signal spaces, the original symbol sequences of multiple users are estimated by exploiting the special structure of space-time block coding (STBC) in combination with the finite alphabet property of transmitted symbols. Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by extensive computer simulations.

    In this letter, we propose a low-complexity estimation method of cyclic-prefix (CP) length for a discrete multitone (DMT) very high-speed digital subscriber line (VDSL) system. Using the sign bits of the received DMT VDSL signals, the proposed method provides a good estimate of CP length, which is suitable for various channel characteristics. This simple estimation method is consistent with the initialization procedure of T1E1.4 multi-carrier modulation (MCM)-based VDSL Standard. Finally, simulation results with VDSL test loops are presented.

  • Invariant Range Image Multi-Pose Face Recognition Using Gradient Face, Membership Matching Score and 3-Layer Matching Search

    The purpose of this paper is to present the novel technique to solve the recognition errors in invariant range image multi-pose face recognition. The scale, center and pose error problems were solved by using the geometric transform. Range image face data (RIFD) was obtained from a laser range finder and was used in the model to generate multi-poses. Each pose data size was reduced by linear reduction. The reduced RIFD was transformed to the gradient face model for facial feature image extraction and also for matching using the Membership Matching Score model. Using this method, the results from the experiment are acceptable although the size of gradient face image data is quite small (659 elements). Three-Layer Matching Search was the algorithm designed to reduce the access timing to the most accurate and similar pose position. The proposed algorithm was tested using facial range images from 130 people with normal facial expressions and without eyeglasses. The results achieved the mean success rate of 95.67 percent of 12 degrees up/down and left/right (UDLR) and 88.35 percent of 24 degrees UDLR.

  • Longitudinal Modal Transmission-Line Theory (L-MTLT) of Multilayered Periodic Waveguides

    Power distribution in multilayered periodic waveguides is first analyzed by longitudinal modal transmission-line theory (L-MTLT). Novel effective characteristic impedances of the equivalent network for TE and TM modes are then derived, and a symmetrical grating guide with three layers is rigorously evaluated to clarify the validity of our approach. Excellent agreement between our results and the results due to other methods indicates that our approach is able to not only reveal all the physical meaning embedded in the multilayered and multi-sectional periodic waveguides, but also predict various possible Bragg regimes rigorously and simply.

  • Adapting a Bilingual Dictionary to Domains

    Two methods using comparable corpora to select translation equivalents appropriate to a domain were devised and evaluated. The first method ranks translation equivalents of a target word according to similarity of their contexts to that of the target word. The second method ranks translation equivalents according to the ratio of associated words that suggest them. An experiment using the EDR bilingual dictionary together with Wall Street Journal and Nihon Keizai Shimbun corpora showed that the method using the ratio of associated words outperforms the method based on contextual similarity. Namely, in a quantitative evaluation using pseudo words, the maximum F-measure of the former method was 86%, while that of the latter method was 82%. The key feature of the method using the ratio of associated words is that it outputs selected translation equivalents together with representative associated words, enabling the translation equivalents to be validated.

  • Watermarking Combined with CELP Speech Coding for Authentication

    This letter presents a speech watermarking scheme that is combined with CELP (Code Excited Linear Prediction) speech coding for speech authentication. The excitation codebook of CELP is partitioned into three parts and labeled '0', '1' and 'any' according to the private key. Watermark embedding process chooses the codebook whose label is the same as the watermark bit and combines it with the codebook labeled 'any' for CELP coding. A statistical method is employed to detect the watermark, and the watermark length for authentication and detection threshold are determined by false alarm probability and missed detection probability. The new codebook partition technique produces less distortion, and the statistical detection method guarantees that the error probability can be controlled under prescribed level.

  • Design and Measurement of a Miniaturized HTS Filter Using Microstrip Spiral Resonators

    A high temperature superconductor (HTS) filter is designed and measured at 1.93 GHz, using microstrip half-wavelength spiral resonators. Resonant and coupling characteristics of miniaturized microstrip spiral resonators are investigated first. Then a 4-pole Chebyshev bandpass filter with a very narrow passband (4.1 MHz) is designed and realized using microstrip spiral resonators. The filter is fabricated using HTS YBCO films deposited on a LaAlO3 substrate. The measured frequency response of the filter agrees reasonably with the specifications, and shows that the filter owns excellent property of spurious resonance rejection over a wide frequency range.

    Optimum wideband beam pattern synthesis methods are usually sensitive to antenna elements gain, phase and position errors. In this letter, these errors are taken into account in a constraint optimization process, and a generalized diagonal loading algorithm is obtained. Computer simulations indicate the robustness of this new method.
