    Digital logic frequency detector whose operation is based on the analog quadricorrelator is presented. Proposed circuit consists of conventional digital logic devices without an alog elements. Therefore, it has superior reliabilities over component drifts or aging effects. Frequency linear discrimination range is 100% of the reference clock rate.

    We investigated a radio interferometer for geodetic use that incorporates commercially available fiber-optic links modulated in the radio-frequency range, and a method for compensating for the delay occurring in the links. With this type of radio interferometer, we can perform baseline analysis without the need for estimating the clock difference between observation stations, which causes a relatively large error in the vertical component of the estimated position of the station. Another advantage of the interferometer is utilization of phase delay, which improves the accuracy of delay determination considerably. By analyzing the interferometer's signal-to-noise ratio, we estimated the practicable cable length to be 58.0 km. The results of preliminary experiments with short optical fiber links show that the differences in the cable delays of the fiber-optic links can be compensated for by calibration signals which make a round trip between the analysis station and the observation sites, and that phase delay can be measured successfully.

    A packet-based leaky-bucket algorithm functions like the early packet discard (EPD), and accepts a newly arriving packet if the probability that all the cells of the packet are accepted is high. We derive some performance characteristics of the cell and packet arrival processes that are accepted by the leaky-bucket algorithm. From these analyses, a method to determine the values of the parameters of the leaky-bucket algorithm and certain relations between this leaky-bucket algorithm and the generic cell rate algorithm (GCRA) are obtained.

    Rate monotonic traffic scheduling algorithm had been shown to be the optimal static priority assignment scheme. The system model studied in can be considered (although not realistic) as a preemptive multiplexer which accepts constant bit rate connections that generate packets periodically. The multiplexer adopts a service discipline such that a lower priority packet can be preempted at any stage by a higher priority one without any loss. The constraint is that every packet has to complete its service before the arrival of its succeeding packet generated by the same connection. In this paper, we study the schedulability problem of rate monotonic schedulers for a fixed-length packet switched network such as the ATM network. A necessary and sufficient condition for a set of m constant bit rate connections to be rate monotonic schedulable is first derived and then utilized to design fast admission control algorithms. One of our algorithms computes in advance the minimum period of a connection which can be accepted given a set of existing connections.

    We examine crossing waveguides with three channels consisting of nonlinear material by means of FD-BPM (Finite Difference Beam Propagation Method). Specifically, we investigate how the insertion of a multimode waveguide into the crossing section of both 13 and 23 structures influences the switching characteristics of output power. We then confirm that these structures can be favorably applied to a wide variety of all-optical devices for integrated optics such as intensity-dependent optical switches, optical power distributors and so on.

  • On a Structure of Block Ciphers with Provable Security against Differential and Linear Cryptanalysis

    We introduce a new methodology for designing block ciphers with provable security against differential and linear cryptanalysis. It is based on three new principles: change of the location of round functions, round functions with recursive structure, and substitution boxes of different sizes. The first realizes parallel computation of the round functions without losing provable security, and the second reduces the size of substitution boxes; moreover, the last is expected to make algebraic attacks difficult. This structure gives us a simple and effective method for designing secure and fast block ciphers in hardware as well as in software implementation. Block encryption algorithm MISTY was designed on the basis of this methodology.

  • Contact Fretting of Electronic Connectors

    Connector contact resistance may become unstable if fretting occurs. Such motions result in the formation of insulating oxides on the surface of base metal contacts or organic polymers on contacts made of platinum group metals. These degradations are termed fretting corrosion and frictional polymerization, respectively. Motion may be caused by external vibration or fluctuating temperature. The lower the frequency of movement, the fewer the number of cycles to contact failure. Increasing the contact normal load or reducing the amplitude of movement may stabilize the connection. Tin and palladium and many of their alloys are especially prone to fretting failure. Tin mated to gold is worse than all-tin contacts. Gold and high gold-silver alloys that are softer when mated to palladium stabilize contact resistance since these metals transfer to the palladium during fretting; but flash gold coatings on palladium and palladium nickel offer marginal improvement for the gold often quickly wears out. Dissimilar metal contact pairs show behaviors like that of the metal which predominates on the surface by transfer. Contact lubricants can often prevent fretting failures and may even restore unlubricated failed contacts to satisfactory service.

    We study resource allocation strategies in ATM switches, which provide quality of service (QoS) guarantees to individual connections. In order to minimize the cell loss rate over a wide range of traffic characteristics, an efficient allocation strategy is necessary. In this paper we introduce a resource allocation strategy, named TP+WRR (Threshold Pushout + Weighted Round Robin) which can fully utilize the buffer space and the bandwidth. We compare the performance of TP+WRR with two typical resource allocation strategies. An exact queueing analysis based on a Markov model is carried out under bursty traffic sources to evaluate their performance. Our results reveal that TP+WRR considerably improves the cell loss probability over the other strategies considered in this paper, especially when many connections are sharing a link.

    Adaptive infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filter implemented using a cascade of second order direct form allpass filters and a finite impulse response (FIR) filter, has the property of its poles converging to those of the unknown system. In this paper we implement the adaptive allpass-FIR digital filter using a lattice allpass filter with minimum number of multipliers. We then derive a simple adaptive algorithm, which does not increase the overall number of multipliers of the proposed adaptive digital filter (ADF) in comparison to the ADF that uses the direct form allpass filter. The proposed structure and algorithm exhibit a kind of orthogonality, which ensures convergence of the poles of the ADF to those of the unknown system. Simulation results confirm this convergence.

    This paper introduces a material management system for newspapers that was developed for The Yomiuri Shimbun. Material transferred to the system is stored in a material database and sent to terminals located in the related sections. The material can be processed effectively just by checking information on the terminals. Special requirements for this system will be discussed first in the paper, then problem-solving will be explored.

    This paper proposes a bit-commitment scheme, BC(), and an efficient statistical zero-knowledge (in short, SZK) protocol in which, for any given multi-variable polynomial, f(X1,,Xt), and any given modulus, n, a prover, P, gives (I1,,It) to a verifier,ν, and can convince ν that P knows (x1,,xt) which satisfies f(x1,,xt) 0 (mod n) and Ii = BC(xi), (i = 1,,t). The proposed protocol is O(|n|) times more efficient than the corresponding previous ones. The (knowledge) soundness of our protocol holds under a computational assumption, the intractability of a modified RSA problem (see Def. 3.2), while the (statistical) zero-knowledgeness of the protocol needs no computational assumption. The protocol can be employed to construct various practical cryptographic protocols, such as fair exchange, untraceable electronic cash and verifiable secret sharing protocols.

    To provide users with database-like query interfaces on HTML data, several systems have been developed to extract structures from HTML pages. Among them, tree-like structures and path expressions are the most popular modeling and navigating tools, respectively. Although path expressions are straightforward in representing top-down search patterns, they provide very limited help in representing bottom-up and in-breadth search patterns. In this paper, a lattice model is proposed to store Web data. The model provides an integrated mechanism to store text, linking information, HTML hierarchy, and sequence order of HTML data. By incorporating lattice operators with comprehension syntax, we show that the query language can represent top-down, bottom-up, and in-breadth searching patterns with uniform operators. It will be also shown that lattice comprehensions can represent all operators of path expressions, except Kleen closure.

    This paper proposes genetic algorithms (GAs) for path planning and trajectory planning of an autonomous mobile robot. Our GA-based approach has an advantage of adaptivity such that the GAs work even if an environment is time-varying or unknown. Therefore, it is suitable for both off-line and on-line motion planning. We first presents a GA for path planning in a 2D terrain. Simulation results on the performance and adaptivity of the GA on randomly generated terrains are shown. Then, we discuss an extension of the GA for solving both path planning and trajectory planning simultaneously.

  • Increase in Contact Resistance of Hard Gold Plating during Thermal Aging -- Nickel-Hardened Gold and Cobalt-Hardened Gold --

    Contact resistance of nickel hardened gold electroplate (NiHG) deposited on nickel-underplated phosphor bronze disk coupons (substrate) after thermal aging was measured with a hard gold-plated beryllium copper alloy pin probe by means of a four-point probe technique, compared to that of cobalt-hardened gold electroplate (CoHG). Surface of NiHG plated coupons after aging was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate the influence of the oxide film formation during thermal aging on contact resistance of NiHG electroplate, compared to that of CoHG. Initial contact resistance of the NiHG coupons was less than 10 mΩ at a contact forces more than 0.05 N, increased to 10 mΩ at a contact force of 0.05 N after 100 hours aging at 200. In contrast, contact resistance of the CoHG coupons progressively increased with increase in aging time, reached 1000 mΩ even at a contact force of 0.05 N after 52 hours aging. XPS analysis for the NiHG coupons demonstrated that nickel oxide film was formed on the NiHG surface in conformity with parabolic growth kinetics, as cobalt oxide film formed on CoHG surface. However, a thickness of the latter film was approximately 4-fold larger than that of former after 100 hours aging at 200. The small increase in contact resistance of NiHG coupons after aging suggested to be due to inhibitory of nickel oxide film growth on the surface. The cause of relatively low and steady contact resistance of NiHG during thermal aging was discussed.

    we evaluate the effect of express lots on production dispatching rule scheduling and cost in VLSI manufacturing final test process. In the assignment of express lots, we make comparisons of two rules, First In First Out (FIFO) rule which is widely used and WEIGHT+RPM rule which considers the time required for jig and temperature exchanges, the remaining processing time of the machine in use and the lot waiting time in queue. When using FIFO rule, the test efficiency begins to deteriorate and the test cost per chip begins to increase, if the content of express lots exceeds 15%. Furthermore, for 30% of express lots' content, the number of total processed lots decreases by 19% and the test cost per chip increases by 22% in comparison to the cases including no express lots. For WEIGHT+RPM rule, however, the test efficiency does not deteriorate and the test cost per chip does not increase even if the content of express lots is increased up to 50%. When we use WEIGHT+RPM rule, Express Lots Tolerances (ELTs), defined as the maximum content of express lots which permits the deterioration of the system characteristics by 5%, are about three times as high as ones when using FIFO rule. It is also found that WEIGHT+RPM rule maintains higher ELTs against the changes in the numbers of planned chips and prepared jigs as compared with FIFO rule.

    This paper proposes a new cell station (CS) configuration for personal communication systems. The proposed CS employs a modified coherent demodulator with 4-branch maximal ratio combining diversity and a burst-by-burst automatic frequency control (AFC) to enhance the coverage. The proposed CS also employs an antenna-sharing diversity transmission to incorporate more than one transceiver block into a small unit with high power efficiency. With these techniques, the BER performance of the uplink control channel (CCH) is flattened regardless of carrier frequency errors within 12 kHz; the diversity gain of uplink traffic channel (TCH) is improved by 2 dB; the downlink transmission power is reduced by 1.9 dB.

  • The Integrated Scheduling and Allocation of High-Level Test Synthesis

    This paper presents a high-level test synthesis algorithm for operation scheduling and data path allocation. Data path allocation is achieved by a controllability and observability balance allocation technique which is based on testability analysis at register-transfer level. Scheduling, on other hand, is carried out by rescheduling transformations which change the default scheduling to improve testability. Contrary to other works in which the scheduling and allocation tasks are performed independently, our approach integrates scheduling and allocation by performing them simultaneously so that the effects of scheduling and allocation on testability are exploited more effectively. Additionally, since sequential loops are widely recognized to make a design hard-to-test, a complete (functional and topological) loop analysis is performed at register-transfer level in order to avoid loop creation during the integrated test synthesis process. With a variety of synthesis benchmarks, experimental results show clearly the advantages of the proposed algorithm.

    This paper describes key technologies for establishing a large-scale public switching node system architecture for handling voice and telephony over ATM (VTOA). VTOA is one of the most promising ATM applications, which allows network operating companies to provide a less-expensive but relatively high quality telephone service, by employing voice-data compression and the efficient transmission capabilities of AAL2. We discuss several technical aspects of VTOA handling system architecture, such as the optimum basis for the node, i. e. , STM versus ATM, the appropriate network structure, and suitable signalling. These key points are evaluated from the standpoints of economy, ease of implementation, and extensibility. Our proposed methods should provide the basis for constructing an efficient and cost-effective VTOA handling network.
