  • A Study on a Hybrid Dilated Banyan Network

    Banyan networks are used in multiprocessor computer applications for an ATM switching. In this paper, we study the continuous blocking of the first n-stage which makes the performance of the banyan networks decrease. We use the 2-dilated banyan networks into the banyan networks to remove the continuous blocking of the first n-stage. We call the new networks as the hybrid dilated banyan networks. We explain how to analyze the throughput of this networks at each stage. Based on the analysis of input rate and output rate at each stage, we can design the hybrid dilated banyan networks with the desirable output rate. The result of analysis shows the hybrid dilated banyan networks have higher performance and feasibility than the banyan networks.

    It has been known that an N-vertex binary tree can be embedded into the path and grid with dilation O(N/logN) and O((N/logN)), respectively. This paper shows that an N-vertex binary tree with proper pathwidth at most k can be embedded into the path grid with dilation O(N/N1/k) and O((N/N1/2k)), respectively.

  • The Effects of Odd-Correlation and Band-Limitation in Direct-Wave Reception Systems Using Broadband Spread-Spectrum Techniques

    In this paper, we describe effects of oddcorrelation functions and band-limitation filters for direct-wave reception systems using broadband spread-spectrum (B-SS) techniques. The receiver of this system is synchronized to the direct-wave. First, the effects of odd-correlation functions are investigated by using M-sequences and random sequences. The effects of even-correlation functions for those sequences can be easily obtained by using results of effects of odd-correlation functions for random sequences. Here we derive a novel function of odd-correlation variance for M-sequence, which is obtained theoretically. Consequently, we show the advantage of M-sequence which is used as spreading sequence. As a reason, in the odd-correlation function of M-sequence, small values are taken near the synchronous phase where harmful scattered-waves exist, strongly. Next, the effects of both odd-correlation function and band-limitation filter are studied by using several kinds of filters. Here we discuss the difference of characteristics in case that despreading sequence of bandlimited pulse or that of rectangular pulse is used in the correlator of the receiver. The technique despreading by rectangular pulse can be achieved a high speed signal processing and equipment miniaturizing because of utilization of switching circuit. We show the advantage of despreading sequence of rectangular pulse, when the limitation bandwidth of transmitting signal takes a small value. Because the characteristics of the correlation function between transmitting sequence of bandlimited pulse and despreading sequence of rectangular pulse can be kept better than that between the transmitting sequence and despreading sequence of bandlimited pulse. As these results, in severe bandlimited direct-wave reception systems using B-SS techniques, M-sequence of rectangular pulse as despreading sequence is most suitable.

  • Proposal on a Temperature-Insensitive Wavelength Semiconductor Laser

    The paper discusses the possibility of building semiconductor lasers whose wavelength stays nearly constant with ambient temperature variation. Several factors affecting the lasing wavelength change with temperature variation in both distributed feedback lasers and Fabry-Perot lasers are addressed and the optimum design of bandgap temperature dependence for the active layer material is discussed. It is pointed out that the most important challenge we face in building temperature-insensitive wavelength lasers is the development of a temperature-insensitive bandgap material for the active layer. Based on published data, it is speculated that such a laser could be developed using a Hg1-xCdxTe/CdTe double heterostructure. Although no data is available yet, we expect a Ga1-xInxAs1-yBiy III-V alloy semiconductor can be used for this purpose. Recently reported T1xIn1-x-yGayP III-V alloy semiconductor might be another promising candidate. Such lasers will greatly advance applications of WDM (Wavelength-Division-Multiplexing) technology to optical fiber communication systems and contribute to network innovations.

    This paper presents an improved pragmatic approach to coded modulation design which provides higher coding gains especially for very noisy channels including those with Rayleigh fading. The signal constellation using four equally utilized dimensions implemented with two correlative carrier frequencies is adopted to enhance the performance of the pragmatic approach previously proposed by Viterbi et al.. The proposed scheme is shown to perform much better by analysis of system performance parameters and extensive computer simulation for practical channel conditions. The bandwidth and power efficiencies are also analyzed and discussed to provide more design flexibility for different communications environments.

    For Nakagami-Rice fading environment which seems to become a principle propagation environment in the next generation wideband and high-capacity mobile systems such as personal communications, we have previously proposed an approximated evaluation scheme for wideband digital transmission characteristics such as errors due to intersymbol interference of multipath waves. We called the scheme 'Equivalent Transmission-Path (ETP) Model.' In this paper, through a discussion about more general equivalent propagation channel expressions, we clarify a theoretical foundation of the ETP model and extend the model to have an ability of expression of instantaneous fading condition varying with time. Also the appropriateness of the instantaneous expression is examined by a computer simulation analysis. Based on this model, statistics of link quality and service availability in Nakagami-Rice fading environments are discussed.

    This paper presents a model for a wide-band fading channel for terrestrial mobile applications. The model is based on the results of measurements made in a heavily built-up urban environment using a 25 MHz signal centred at approximately 2.6 GHz. This paper presents measured impulse responses and details the parameter extraction process used to determine the characteristics of the channel. These parameters are used in the channel simulation package and the output of these simulations are compared to the original data.

  • Using the Minimum Reservation Rate for Transmission of Pre-Encoded MPEG VBR Video Using CBR Service

    This paper presents the system issues involved with the transmission of pre-encoded VBR MPEG video using CBR service. Conventional wisdom suggests that lossless delivery of VBR video using CBR service requires bandwidth to be reserved at the peak rate resulting in low bandwidth utilization. We calculate the minimum rate at which bandwidth must be reserved on a network in order to provide continuous playback of an MPEG encoded video bitstream. Simulation results using the frame size traces from several pre-encoded MPEG bitstreams and several buffer sizes demonstrate that this minimum reservation rateis much lower than the peak rate when a relatively small playback buffer size is used, resulting in much higher bandwidth utilization. Procedures for performing connection setup and lossless realtime video playback between the video server and the client are outlined. Methods for incorporating VCR-like features such as pauseandfast forward/reversefor Video-on-Demand (VoD) applications are presented.

    In this work, a new structure of M-channel linear-phase paraunitary filter banks is proposed, where M is even. Our proposed structure can be regarded as a modification of the conventional generalized linear-phase lapped orthogonal transforms (GenLOT) based on the discrete cosine transform (DCT). The main purpose of this work is to overcome the limitation of the conventional DCT-based GenLOT, and improve the performance of the fast implementation. It is shown that our proposed fast GenLOT is superior to that of the conventional technique in terms of the coding gain. This work also provides a recursive initialization design procedure so as to avoid insignificant local-minimum solutions in the non-linear optimization processes. In order to verify the significance of our proposed method, several design examples are given. Furthermore, it is shown that the fast implementation can be used to construct M-band linear-phase orthonormal wavelets with regularity.

  • Spectrum-Adaptive Band-Limiting Technique for 3-D Non-orthogonal Sampling

    This paper proposes a three-dimensional (3-D) band-limiting technique for a conversion of Simple Cubic Sampling into Body-Centered Cubic Sampling. Based on spectral distribution of the original signal, the proposed method adaptively varies the passband shape of a band-limiting filter in order to preserve informations of the original picture. By applying this method to 3-D moving pictures, we can preserve resolution on each axis without introducing heavy aliasing error and avoid degradation of picture quality such as ringing in still pictures or blurring in moving pictures. The examples given in this paper demonstrate these advantages.

  • A Circularly Polarized Broadband Rhombic Loop Antenna

    A broadband rhombic loop antenna is introduced to radiate a circularly polarized wave. This antenna has a single feed and is located above a ground plane. The perimeter of the loop is typically about 1.3 wavelength. One gap is made on the loop to produce a traveling wave distribution of current. Antenna characteristics are calculated by the method of moments and compared with the measured data. By adjusting a perimeter and a gap position of the loop, circular polarization is obtained. In addition, with the appropriate vertex angle of the rhombus, the bandwidth of about 20% for the axial ratio (2dB) is attained and the possibility of controlling the input impedance is found. Finally, it is observed that sense of circular polarization can be changed easily from left-hand to right-hand, and vice versa by switching one gap position to the other on the rhombic loop.

  • Optimal Bandwidth Reservation for Circuit Groups Handling Asymmetric Multi-Connection Calls

    This paper is concerned with bandwidth reservation for circuit groups which handle calls requesting asymmetric forward and backward multi-connections. A model of circuit group with sub-group configuration is treated, and two types of the bandwidth reservation schemes for the model are studied in this paper. One is a global scheme with monitoring the whole circuit group, and the other is a local scheme with monitoring each sub-group independently. The problems of optimizing the reservation parameters are formulated, and optimization methods for the problems are proposed. Numerical example are presented, and effectiveness of the reservation schemes with using the optimized parameters is numerically examined.

    A tunnel film(9 nm thick) formed by a rapid thermal oxidation in dry oxygen-rapid thermal nitridation in NH3-rapid thermal oxynitridation in N2O (ONN) sequence is applied to a stacked-gate flash memory cell, in which writing and erasing are carried out by Fowler-Nordheim tunneling at a drain and at a channel, respectively. The writing, erasing, endurance, disturbance and retention characteristics of the memory cells with ONN tunnel films are, for the first time, compared to those of the memory cells with conventional tunnel films such as dry oxide, N2O-oxynitride and reoxidized nitrided oxide tunnel films. No significant difference of the writing and erasing characteristics was observed among the memory cells with the various tunnel films. However, the amount of Vth window narrowing in the endurance characteristics of the memory cells with ONN (-12.9%) and reoxidized nitrided oxide(-11.4%) tunnel films were much smaller than those of the memory cells with RTO(-34.0%) and NO (-38.2%) after 106 write/erase cycles. Furthermore, the decrease in Vth in the drain disturbance characteristics of the memory cells with ONN tunnel films (21.2%) after weak electron-ejecting stress of 105 cycles was smaller than those of the memory cells with the other films(51.4-64.4%). The retention characteristics of the memory cells with ONN tunnel films under the thermal stress of 200, 5.9105 sec were superior(ΔVth=-2.1%) to those of the memory cells with the other films(ΔVth=-5.4 - -8.2%). The reasons of these findings are because ONN films exhibit smaller number of charge traps and interface states induced by write/erase cycle stress, and suppress leakage curent stimulated by the weak electron-ejecting bias and the thermal stress, compared to the dry oxide, the N2O-oxynitride and the reoxidized nitrided oxide. ONN films are found to be suitable for use as tunnel films of fiash memory cells.

  • The Optimum Approximate Restoration of Multi-Dimensional Signals Using the Prescribed Analysis or Synthesis Filter Bank

    We present a systematic theory for the optimum sub-band interpolation using a given analysis or synthesis filter bank with the prescribed coefficient bit length. Recently, similar treatment is presented by Kida and quantization for decimated sample values is contained partly in this discussion [13]. However, in his previous treatment, measures of error are defined abstractly and no discussion for concrete functional forms of measures of error is provided. Further, in the previous discussion, quantization is neglected in the proof of the reciprocal theorem. In this paper, linear quantization for decimated sample values is included also and, under some conditions, we will present concrete functional forms of worst case measures of error or a pair of upper bound and lower limit of those measures of error in the variable domain. These measures of error are defined in Rn, although the measure of error in the literature [13] is more general but must be defined in each limited block separately. Based on a concrete expression of measure of error, we will present similar reciprocal theorem for a filter bank nevertheless the quantization for the decimated sample values is contained in the discussion. Examples are given for QMF banks and cosine-modulated FIR filter banks. It will be shown that favorable linear phase FIR filter banks are easily realized from cosine-modulated FIR filter banks by using reciprocal relation and new transformation called cosine-sine modulation in the design of filter banks.

  • Fair Bandwidth Allocation in FRP-Based ATM Local Area Networks

    We propose burst based bandwidth reservation method called FRP (Fast Reservation Protocol) in ATM LAN with general topology, and evaluate its performance. In FRP, the bandwidth is allocated on each link on burst basis, not on call basis. This enables an effective use of network resources when it is applied to highly bursty traffic, which can be typically found in data communications. The problem of FRP is that VCs traversing the different number of links experience different blocking probabilities as can be found in the conventional circuit-switching networks. In this paper, we treat a fairness issue in FRP-based ATM local area networks. The Max-Min flow control is adopted as the fair bandwidth allocation method to accomplish the fairness in the throughput. However, the original Max-Min flow control works in a centralized fashion, which is not desirable in the FRP-based ATM LAN. We therefore propose a "semi"-distributed Max-Min flow control suitable to FRP, in which each switch maintains its own local information about bandwidth usage of the connected links. Through simulation experiments, we show that the proposed semi-distributed Max-Min flow control can achieve the fairness among VCs as the original Max-Min flow control when the propagation delays are not large and the number of VCs is not so much.

    This paper describes GaAs MMICs used in wireless LANs for spread spectrum communications on the ISM band. Both the transmitter and the receiver are incorporated inside the MMIC. In our experiment using prototypes at a center frequency of 2.45 GHz, the transmitter has a saturation output power of 21.4 dBm and the total current consumption is 131.2 mA. The receiver has a noise figure of3.2 dB and a gain of 12.2 dB.

    This paper proposes a design technique for 3-D non-separable QMF banks with Face-Centered Cubic Sampling (FCCS) and Body-Centered Cubic Sampling (BCCS). In the proposed technique, 2-D McClellan transformation is applied to a suitably designed 2-D prototype QMF to obtain 3-D QMFs. The design examples given in this paper demonstrate advantages of the proposed method.

    Various kinds of new architectures have been proposed to enhance operating performance of the DRAM. This paper reviews these architectures including EDO, SDRAM, RDRAM, EDRAM, and CDRAM. The EDO slightly modifies the output control of the conventional DRAM architecture. Other innovative architectures try to enhance the performance by taking advantage of DRAM's internal multiple bits architecture with internal pipeline, parallel-serial conversion, or static buffers/on-chip cache. A quantitative analysis based on an assumption of wait cycles was made to compare PC system performance with some architectures. The calculation indicated the effectiveness of external or on-chip cache. Future trends cover high-speed I/O interface, unified memory architecture, and system integrated memory. The interface includes limited I/O swing such as HSTL and SSTL to realize more than 100MHz operation. Also, Ramlink and SyncLink are briefly reviewed as candidates for next generation interface. Unified memory architecture attempts to save total memory capacity by combining graphics and main memory. Advanced device technology enables system integration which combine system logic and memory. It suggests one potential direction towards system on a chip in the future.

  • Fundamental Aspects of ESD Phenomena and Its Measurement Techniques

    This paper clarified fundamental aspects of both triboelectric processes and electrostatic discharge (ESD) phenomena to the electronic systems. A chance for ESD can occur if a charged metal object (steel piped chair, for example) contacts or collides with another metal objects at moderate speed. At metal-metal ESD event, the metal objects act as a radiation antenna in a very short time (some 100ps, for example) which emanates impulsive electromagnetic fields with unipolarity into the surrounding space. Because of ESD at low-voltage (3kV or less) conditions, the direction of electrons movement at the spark gap is always unidirectional and fixed. The spark gap works as a momentary switch and also as a "diode." The dominant fields radiated from the metal objects are impulsive electric fields or impulsive magnetic fields which depend on the metal object's electrical and geometric conditions. This impulsive electromagnetic fields penetrate electronic systems, causing electromagnetic interference (EMI) such as malfunctions or circuit upset. The difference between EMI actions in high-voltage ESD and low-voltage ESD is experimentally analyzed in terms of energy conversion/consumption. A series of experiments revealed that EMI actions due to the metal-metal ESD are not proportional to the charge voltage nor the discharge current. In order to capture single shot impulsive electromagnetic fields very close to the ESD point (wave source), a short monopole antenna as an ultra broad-band field sensor was devised. As for signal transmissions between the short monopole antenna and the instrument (receiver), micro/millimeter wave techniques were applied. The transmission line's minimum band width DC-18.5GHz is required for time domain measurements of low-voltage ESD.

    PID-type controllers have been well-known and widely used in many industries. Their regulation property of those was more improved through the addition of Bang-Bang-action. In spite of the potentials of these PID-plus Bang-Bang controllers, their regulation property is still limited by the fixed window limit value that determines the control action, i. e., PID or Bang-Bang. Thus, this paper presents an approach for improving the regulation property by dynamically changing the window limit value according to the plant dynamics with Neural Network predictive model. The improved regulation property is illustrated through simulation studies for position control of DC servo-motor system in the sense of classical figures of merit such as overshoot and rise time.
