  • Filter Bank Implementation of the Shift Operation in Orthonormal Wavelet Bases

    The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical tool for performing a shift operation in orthonormal compactly supported wavelet bases. This translation τ of a discrete sequence, where τ is a real number, is suitable for filter bank implementations. The shift operation in this realization is neither related to the analysis filters nor to the synthesis filters of the filter bank. Simulations were done on the Daubechis wavelets with 12 coefficients and on complex valued wavelets. For the latter ones a real input sequence was used and split up into two subsequences in order to gain computational efficiency.

    This work addresses the problems of bit allocation and coding gain in subband coding system with non-paraunitary filter banks. Since energy conservation does not hold in non-paraunitary filter banks, the model to be adopted for quantizers is important to evaluate the output distortion introduced by subband signal quantization. To evaluate the overall distortion we start with adopting the gain plus additive noise model for quantizers, which is more reliable than the additive noise model. With this model, the expression for overall reconstruction error variance becomes so complicated that the problem of optimum bit allocation, as required for evaluation of the coding gain, must be numerically solved. So, we propose an approximation method in which we neglect the terms due to correlation among quantization errors in calculating the bit allocation but take them into consideration in evaluating the coding gain, assuming sufficiently high bitrate coding. Application of this approximation method to the SSKF subband coding systems with AR (1) input source shows that the method is very accurate even at low bit rate coding (1 bit/sample).

    An ATM network design algorithm is treated as a resource allocation problem. As an effective way to facilitate a coexistence of traffic with its diverse characteristics and different quality of service (QOS) requirements in ATM networks, a virtual path (VP) concept has been proposed. In attempting to design the VP (Virtual Path)-based ATM network, it requires to consider a network topology and traffic pattern generated from users for minimizing a network construction cost while satisfying QOS requirements such as cell / call loss probabilities and cell delay times. In this paper, we propose a new heuristic design algorithm for the VP-based ATM network under QOS constraints. A minimum bandwidth required to transfer a given amount of traffic is first obtained by utilizing an equivalent bandwidth method. After all the routes of VPs are temporarily established by means of the shortest paths, we try to minimize the network cost through the alternation of VP route, the separation of a single VP into several VPs, and the introduction of VCX nodes. To evaluate our design algorithm, we consider two kinds of traffic; voice traffic as low speed service and still picture traffic as high speed service. Through numerical examples, we demonstrate that our design method can achieve an efficient use of network resources, which results in the cost-effective VP-based ATM network.

    A goal of a broadband ISDN network is to provide integrated transport for a wide range of applications such as teleconferencing, entertainment video, and file distribution. These require multipoint communications in addition to conventional point-to-point connections. The essential component to provide multipoint communications is a multicast packet switch. In this paper, we propose and analyze a new parallel multicast packet switch which easily approaches a maximum throughput of 100% as the number of fanout and multicast rate are increased. The proposed switch consists of a simple ring network and a point-to-point switch network in parallel. The ring network provides both replication and routing of multicast packets. The point-to-point switch network is responsible for delivering only unicast packets. The ring network provided in this switch overcomes the problems of clock synchronization and unfairness of access in the slotted ring by synchronizing the ring to the time slot used in the point-to-point switch and providing small amount of speed-up. Moreover, the significant drawbacks of the basic cascaded multicast fabric design are removed in this parallel switch which can separate the unicast and multicast packets before entering the switch fabric. The performance analysis shows that this switch with the small size of input/output buffers achieves good performance in delay and throughput, and the packet loss probability less than 10-9.

  • Received Signal Level Characteristics for Wideband Radio Channels in Line-of-Sight Microcells

    Currently, many efforts are underway to design wideband mobile communication system. The system is one of alternative of Future Public Land Mobile Telecommunication Systems (FPLMTS). In this paper, we clarify received signal level characteristics for wideband mobile radio channels in line-of-sight (LOS) microcells. The results from urban-area field experiments, where received signal levels for various receiver bandwidths and power delay profiles were measured, show that the depth of fading of the-received signal decreases as normalized RMS delay spread, defined as the product of receiver bandwidth and RMS delay spread, increases. These results are useful in designing wideband microcell systems for urban areas.

    The disturbance-rejection problem is to find a feedback control law for linear control systems such that the influence of disturbances is completely rejected from the output. In 1970 Wonham and Morse first studied this problem in the framework of the so-called geometric approach. On the other hand, in 1985 Ghosh studied parameter insensitive disturbance-rejection problems with state feedback and with dynamic compensator. In this paper we study the parameter insensitive disturbance-rejection problem with static incomplete-state feedback for linear multivariable systems in the framework of the geometric approach from the mathematical point of view. Necessary conditions and/or sufficient conditions for this problem to be solvable are presented. Finally an illustrative example is presented.

    Conventional subband ADF's (adaptive digital filters) using filter banks have shown a degradation in performance because of the non-ideal nature of filters. To solve this problem, we propose a new type of subband ADF incorporating two types of analysis filter bank. In this paper, we show that we can design the optimum filter bank which minimizes the LMSE (least mean squared error). In other words, we can design a subband ADF with less MSE than that of conventional subband ADF's.

    Considered is the theory of several dielectric waveguide phenomena for which the vector nature of the electromagnetic field is essential. These phenomena are the following rotation of the plane of polarization in chiral and twisted waveguides, Bragg's reflection in a twisted waveguide in a narrow frequency band, and excitation of a waveguide at a near-cutoff frequency.

    To connect among many radio base stations by using optical fiber bus link in microcellular system, subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) is excellent in simplicity and flexibility. But performance degradation due to optical beat noises is severe problem. To solve this problems, this paper proposes a new type of intercell connection bus fiber-optic link (ICBL) using time division multiplexing, called TDM-ICBL. This paper also analyzes transmission performance of TDM-ICBL theoretically and compares with SCM-ICBL. The analysis clarifies that while the number of RBSs connected to SCM-ICBL is severely restricted by beat noises, TDM-ICBL is more useful than SCM-ICBL when there are many number of connected RBSs.

    A wideband monolithic lossy match power amplifier having an LPF/HPF-combined interstage network has been developed. As an interstage network, it employs an LPF (Low-Pass Filter) including FET's drain capacitance, an HPF (High-Pass Filter) comprised of a dc blocking capacitor and a drain bias circuit, and a constant-resistance network for wideband impedance matching and transformation. With the use of this interstage network, a wide bandwidth of 6 to 16.5 GHz and an output power of 30.40.9 dBm have been achieved.

    An experimental study on propagation characteristics in a room of a modern office building using a 57.5 GHz carrier is described. The objective of the study is to provide initial information about the path-loss and fading characteristics for millimeter-wave wireless indoor communication systems. The area of the floor of the room is about 90 m2 and the room was almost empty with no furniture except the experimental apparatus. A wide-beam scalar feed horn transmission antenna and an omnidirectional receiving antenna were used and set to be with the same height. The measured area was divided into many "squares" to characterize the propagation. The variation of square transmission loss was calculated, and the regions where the maximum square transmission loss was observed were pointed out. It became clear that the distance power law for square transmission loss was approximately of the order d-2 along the direct path. Rician distributions for fast fading were derived in almost all squares of this room. The spectra for the fast fading envelope were also derived. From the propagation point of view, the results show that no extreme difficulty seems to exist in developing wireless communication systems in the 60 GHz band.

  • Equiripple Design of QMF Banks Using Digital Allpass Networks

    In this paper, we discuss design of quadrature mirror filter (QMF) banks using digital allpass networks in the frequency domain. In the QMF banks composed of a parallel connection of two allpass networks, both aliasing error and amplitude distortion are always completely canceled. Therefore, we only need to design the analysis filters and eliminate phase distortion of the overall transfer function. We consider design of the QMF banks in two cases where phase responses of the filters are repuired or not required. In the case where the phase responses are not required, the design problem can be reduced to design of phase difference of two allpass networks. In the case where the phase responses are required, we present a procedure for designing the QMF banks with both equiripple magnitude and phase responses.

  • Spectrum Scrambling by Means of QMF Banks for Secure Communication

    Spectrum scrambling can be applied in vehicle telephones for more secure communication. This letter shows a spectrum scrambling method using real coefficients M band uniform QMF banks. Once QMF banks are designed, spectrum scrambling filters can be realized with simpler procedures. By introducing selectors in the filters, the scrambling scheme may be easily varied in real time processing. Design examples and experimental simulations are included.

  • A Dual Mode Dielectric Waveguide Resonator and Its Application to Bandpass Filters

    The fundamental TE10 mode in a rectangular waveguide of a square cross section is degenerate with TE01 mode. A quarter wavelength resonator made of a dielectric square waveguide is, therefore, applied for a small-sized bandpass filter, just like dual mode filters for base stations in the mobile communication. In this paper, the methods to couple the two modes are first studied, including cutting a corner of the resonator and adding some metal electrodes on its end face. Both methods help to flow the rf current of the odd mode at the corner, resulting in decrease of the series inductance and thus increase of the resonant frequency. The coupling constant, that is proportional to the difference of the odd and even-mode's resonant frequency, can be controlled by the perturbations mentioned above. The coupling to the external circuit is adjusted by an electrode fabricated also on the end face. It is connected to a microstrip line and capacitively couples to the resonant modes. The coupling strength increases with the dimension of the electrode. The adjustment of the resonant frequency is carried out by the similar electrode on the end face and connected to the center of the side of the square cross section. The frequency decreases with the length of the electrode. The unloaded Q is measured to be of around 500 for 5510 mm resonator of εr=93. The optimum aspect ratio for the resonator is found in terms of the Q value. The simplest bandpass filter, i.e., a two-stage bandpass filter is designed and fabricated using 5510 mm resonator. It is mounted in a square hole made in a printed circuit board and excited by a microstrip line. The frequency characteristics are in good agreement with the expected values.

  • Miniaturized Stepped Impedance Resonators with a Double Coaxial Structure and Their Application to Bandpass Filters

    This paper describes newly developed miniaturized stepped impedance resonators with a double coaxial structure (DC-SIR's) and their application to bandpass filters. The new DC-SIR's using dielectric material are devised for more compact and lower frequency bandpass filters. Fundamental characteristics such as resonance properties and unloaded-Q make it clear that DC-SIR's have attractive features that miniaturization can be achieved without Q-factor degradation. Trial 400 MHz bandpass filters incorporating DC-SIR's are also made. Experimental results of bandpass filters proved that DC-SIR's are applicable to lower frequency band radio equipment and able to contribute to the expansion of applicable frequency ranges of dielectric coaxial resonators.

  • Numerical Evaluation of Propagation Impairments Due to Man-Made Structures on Digital Microwave Links

    Radio disturbances of digital microwave links are likely to increase as man-made structures screen the radio propagation paths, and unwanted waves reflected or scattered by the structures interfere with radio signals. This paper describes a practical method for evaluating the influence of propagation impairments due to man-made structures on digital microwave links and provides some model calculations of those impairments. Since multilevel and quadrature modulation techniques are employed to achieve high spectral efficiency for recent digital transmissions, not only average level attenuation but also in-band distortion and intersymbol interference have to be taken into account. Propagation distortion, diffraction loss and cross-polar interference due to reflected and scattered waves from man-made structures such as buildings and conductor structures are evaluated.

  • Millimeter Wave Propagation Model and Delay Spread along the Maglev Guideway

    In the millimeter-wave propagation inside of figure U guideway of maglev, a multipath model using the ray-tracing method is presented. Prediction shows that delay spread is exceedingly small and high speed data transmission more than 100Mbps is possible without an equalizer.

    To make medical telemetry system more reliable in severe electromagnetic environment, we applied spread spectrum communication to ECG data transmission method. Spread spectrum communication system has shown superior performances to other systems, especially, in respect of anti-jamming, which allows it to share the frequency band with current telemetry systems. In this study, we show the characteristics of a spread spectrum transmitter when it is used in the same frequency band as a narrow-band transmitter. The result shows that the spread spectrum telemetry system can use the same frequency band permitted for medical telemetry system.
