  • All-NbN Single Flux Quantum Circuits Based on NbN/AlN/NbN Tunnel Junctions

    We report on the fabrication and operation of all-NbN single flux quantum (SFQ) circuits with resistively shunted NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions fabricated on silicon substrates. The critical current varied by about 5% in 400 NbN/AlN/NbN junction arrays, where the junction area was 88 µm2. Critical current densities of the NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions showed exponential dependence on the deposition time of the AlN barrier. By using the 12-nm-thick Cu film as shunted resistors, non-hysteretic current-voltage characteristics were achieved. From dc-SQUID measurements, the sheet inductance of our NbN stripline was estimated to be around 1.2 pH at 4.2 K. We designed and fabricated circuits consisting of dc/SFQ converters, Josephson transmission lines, and T flip-flop-based SFQ/dc converters. The circuits demonstrated correct operation with a bias margin of more than 15% at 4.2 K.

  • A Digital Watermark Method Using the Wavelet Transform for Video Data

    With the advent of digital video and digital broadcasting, copyright protection of video data has been one of the most important issues. We present in this paper a novel method of digital watermark for video data based on the discrete wavelet transform. In this method, we embed the watermark in the lowest frequency components of each frame in the uncoded video by using a controlled quantization process. The watermark can be extracted directly from the decoded video without access to the original video. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives the watermarked image of better quality and is robust against MPEG coding and re-encoding. Furthermore, we discuss multiple watermarking with regard to the generational copy control for video contents.

  • An Adaptive List-Output Viterbi Equalizer with Fast Compare-Select Operation

    This paper proposes an adaptive list-output Viterbi equalizer (LVE) with fast compare-select operation, in order to achieve a good trade-off between bit error rate (BER) performance and processing speed. An LVE, which keeps several survivors for each state, has good BER performance in the presence of wide-spread intersymbol interference. However, the LVE suffers from large processing delay due to its sorting-based compare-select operation. The proposed adaptive LVE greatly reduces its processing delay, because it simplifies compare-select operation. In addition, computer simulation shows that the proposed LVE causes only slight BER performance degradation due to its simplification of compare-select operation. Thus, the proposed LVE achieves better BER performance than decision-feedback sequence estimation (DFSE) without an increase in processing delay.

    A method of evaluating the gas viscous friction force acting on head/disk interface has been developed. In the past, the effect of the gas viscous friction force has been almost negligible, due to its small value compared with the contact friction force. Recently the gas viscous friction force has tended to increase with the decrease in spacing and the increase in relative speed between the slider and the disk, therefore it is becoming necessary to consider its effect on motor load or slider posture. Few experimental studies of the gas viscous friction force, however, have been performed. In this study, the measurement of the gas viscous friction force has been realized by developing a sensitive friction force sensor. Furthermore a method of evaluating the gas viscous and contact friction forces separately has been also established.

  • Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA Using Frequency Spread Coding

    In this paper, a type of multi-carrier direct sequence code division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) system which uses frequency spread coding is proposed and investigated for the down-link. An MC-DS-CDMA system is a combined system of CDMA and multi-carrier modulation. This system is often categorized as a "serial to parallel (S/P) type" system because serial to parallel converted data symbols are transmitted. They use different sub-carriers which are narrow-band DS waveforms. In this system, benefits of path or frequency diversity can not be obtained because of the narrow-band transmission of each data symbol. In order to benefit from the diversity, we propose to adopt frequency spread coding in an MC-DS-CDMA system. The proposed system exploits frequency diversity without additional redundancy, i. e. , no frequency or time redundancy is required to improve the performance. Computer simulation is carried out in a frequency selective fading channel and the results show its effectiveness in terms of average bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, the proposed system is compared with a multi-carrier (MC-) CDMA system which is often categorized as a "copy type" system and a single-carrier (SC-) DS-CDMA system using a RAKE receiver.

    To improve frequency efficiency or user capacity in multi-path fading environments, we introduce and investigate an orthogonal multi-carrier frequency hopping-code division multiple access (FH-CDMA). These improvements are achieved by combining the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and FH-CDMA schemes. The basic idea has been previously proposed by the authors. The aim of study in this paper is to evaluate the performance of this scheme in various environments. The theoretical analysis of bit error rate (BER) performance in this paper includes the effects of frequency selective fading in land mobile communications and of nonlinear amplification in satellite communications. A modified scheme of controlling transmission power to be controlled according to the number of simultaneously accessing users is also discussed. This modified scheme improves BER performance for frequency selective fading when the number of simultaneously accessing users in a cellular zone is small. Furthermore, an error-correcting code and its erasure decoding are applied in order to reduce errors due to hits in asynchronous FH/CDMA for reverse link as well as errors due to fading and noise.

    The design of a liner decorrelating detector for multi-processing gain code-division multiple-access (MPG-CDMA) systems is proposed, and its performance is discussed. As the result, the performance improvement by this detector is confirmed. Also, it is found that that the degrees of the noise enhancement depend on the processing gains of the signals.

  • A Novel Channel Estimation Scheme Employing Adaptive Selection of Frequency-Domain Filters for OFDM Systems

    This paper proposes a simple adaptive channel estimation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in order to realize high-rate wireless local area networks (LANs). The proposed estimator consists of simple frequency-domain FIR filters, which are adaptively selected according to the difference vector between adjacent subcarriers and channel amplitude of the subcarrier. No precomputation or matrix signal processing is required in the derivation of these characteristics. Computer simulations show that the packet error rate performance of the proposed scheme is superior to that of the least-squares scheme by 1.1 dB in terms of required Eb/N0 at PER=0.1 in AWGN channels. They also show, for the same criterion, a 0.7 dB improvement in a frequency selective fading channel with delay spread values of 100 ns.

    Fully automatic reconstruction of 3D models from images is well-known to be a difficult problem. For many applications, a limited amount of human assistance is allowed and can greatly reduce the complexity of the 3D reconstruction problem. In this paper, we present an easy-to-use method for aligning a parameterized 3D CAD model to images taken from different views. The shape parameters of the 3D CAD model can be recovered accurately. Our work is composed of two parts. In the first part, we developed an interactive tool which allows the user to associate the features in the CAD model to the features in the 2D images. This interactive tool is designed to achieve efficiency and accuracy. In the second part, 3D information extracted from different stereo views are integrated together by using an optimization technique to obtain accurate shape parameters. Some experimental results have been shown to demonstrate the accuracy and usefulness of the recovered CAD model.

    In this paper, the Linear Exponential Quadratic Gaussian with Loop Transfer Recovery (LEQG/LTR) methodology is employed for the design of high performance induction motor servo systems. In addition, we design a speed sensorless induction motor vector controlled driver with both the extended Kalman filter and the LEQG/LTR algorithm. The experimental realization of an induction servo system is given. Compared with the traditional PI and LQG/LTR methods, it can be seen that the system output sensitivity for parameter variations and the rising time for larger command input of the proposed method can be significantly reduced.

    In this paper, we present a new approach which is spanning tree-based genetic algorithm for solving a multi-objective transportation problem. The transportation problem as a special type of the network optimization problems has the special data structure in solution characterized as a transportation graph. In encoding transportation problem, we introduce one of node encodings based on a spanning tree which is adopted as it is capable of equally and uniquely representing all possible basic solutions. The crossover and mutation were designed based on this encoding. Also we designed the criterion that chromosome has always feasibility converted to a transportation tree. In the evolutionary process, the mixed strategy with (µ+λ)-selection and roulette wheel selection is used. Numerical experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

    The transmission quality in mobile wireless communications is affected by not only the thermal noise but also the multipass fading which changes drastically an amplitude and a phase of received signal. The paper proposes the theoretical and approximate methods for deriving an average bit error rate in DS-CDMA systems under the Rician fading environment on the assumption of the frequency non-selective fading, as parameters of the number of simultaneous access stations, the maximum Doppler frequency and so on. It is confirmed from the coincidence of theoretical and approximate results with simulation ones that the proposed approach is applicable to a variety of system parameters.

    This paper discusses factorization of bent function type complex Hadamard matrices of order pn with a prime p. It is shown that any bent function type complex Hadamard matrix has symmetrical factorization, which can be expressed by the product of n matrices of order pn with pn+1 non-zero elements, a matrix of order pn with pn non-zero ones, and the n matrices, at most. As its application, a correlator for M-ary spread spectrum communications is successfully given, which can be simply constructed by the same circuits with reduced multiplicators, before and behind.

    This paper presents a quadriphase sequence pair, whose aperiodic auto-correlation functions for non-zero shifts and cross-one for any shift take pure imaginary values. Functions for pairs of length 2n are formulated, which map the vector space of order n over GF(2) to Z4. It is shown that they are bent for any n, such that their Fourier transforms take all the unit magnitude.

    A new class of nonlinear filters called Vector Median Rational Hybrid Filters (VMRHF) for multispectral image processing is introduced and applied to color image filtering problems. These filters are based on Rational Functions (RF). The VMRHF filter is a two-stage filter, which exploits the features of the vector median filter and those of the rational operator. The filter output is a result of vector rational function operating on the output of three sub-functions. Two vector median (VMF) sub-filters and one center weighted vector median filter (CWVMF) are proposed to be used here due to their desirable properties, such as, edge and details preservation and accurate chromaticity estimation. Experimental results show that the new VMRHF outperforms a number of widely known nonlinear filters for multispectral image processing such as the Vector Median ilter (VMF) and Distance Directional Filters (DDf) with respect to all criteria used.

    Multi-path propagation structure in the urban mobile communication environment of 25 GHz band has been measured by means of newly developed "multi-path propagation parameter measurement equipment," which is capable of estimating coupled DOA (Direction Of Arrival), TOA (Time Of Arrival) and relative field strength by super resolution techniques. Before measurement, basic performance of the equipment has been evaluated in the anechoic chamber in order to ascertain limitation on measurement. For practice and verification of outdoor propagation characteristics, basic data have been collected in a works where accurate buildings and road layout is known. Sub-sequently, data have been collected in the urban mobile communication environment and following characteristics have been confirmed. 1) DOA and TOA of wave reflected by the side of building almost follow the ray-trace. 2) Street trees make 25 GHz band wave attenuate. 3) There are such unusual cases that it is possible to communicate in spite of out of line-of-sight by multi-path propagation. 4) Narrow streets have very complicated propagation structures. Finally, technologies that should be developed for the high-speed digital mobile communication are proposed based on the measurement results.

    This paper describes a method of predicting transmission performance to be obtained by applying RAKE reception and parallel transmission in realistic urban multipath environments. Delay profiles measured in metropolitan Tokyo at microwave frequencies were used to obtain the impulse responses of radio channels, and the closed-form equations corresponding to the performance of these anti-multipath techniques were derived, by means of the characteristic function method, under the assumption that the phases of the impulse responses are uniformly distributed. Results show that RAKE reception provides bit error rates 100 times lower than bare transmission does, whereas the improvement obtained by using parallel transmission should be especially valuable in broadband communication systems, such as those operating at data rates above 10 Mb/s.

  • A Built-in Self-Reconfigurable Scheme for 3D Mesh Arrays

    We propose a model for fault tolerant 3D processor arrays using one-and-half track switches. Spare processors are laid on the two opposite surfaces of the 3D array. The fault compensation process is performed by shifting processors on a continuous straight line (called compensation path) from a faulty processor to a spare on the surfaces. It is not allowed that compensantion paths are in the near-miss relation each other. Then, switches with only 4 states are needed to preserve the 3D mesh topology after compensating for faults. We give an algorithm in a convenient form for reconfiguring by hardware the 3D mesh arrays with faults. The algorithm can reconfigure the 3D mesh arrays in polynomial time. By computer simulation, we show the survival rates and the reliabilities of arrays which express the efficiencies of reconfiguration according to the algorithm. The reliabilities are compared with those of the model using double tracks for which the near-miss relation among compensation paths is allowed, but whose hardware overhead is almost double of that of the proposed model using one-and-half track. Finally, we design a logical circuit for hardware realization of the algorithm. Using the circuit, we can construct such a built-in self-reconfigurable 3D mesh array that the reconfiguration is done very quickly without an aid of a host computer.

  • Time-Dependence Effect in Alumite Recording Media with Perpendicular Anisotropy

    In this paper, we will present a study of the time-dependence effect in alumite perpendicular media at different thicknesses. Important parameters of the time-dependence effect such as magnetic viscosity and activation volume are investigated. Viscosity as a function of applied field (viscosity curve) exhibits a short plateau at a low field and then decreases monotonously with increasing field. After correcting for the demagnetizing field, the shape of the intrinsic viscosity curves changes to the well-known shape of the viscosity curve of in-plane media, i. e. , they have a peak near Hc. The intrinsic viscosity curves obtained from the experiments were fitted to an analytical model by Chantrell et al., from which, we found that the effective switching volumes obtained by fitting are much smaller than the column volumes, indicating that the reversal mechanism is incoherent.

  • An Improved Pilot Symbol Assisted Coherent Detection Scheme for Rician Fading Channels

    This paper proposes a coherent detection scheme that can reduce the estimation errors of the carrier phase due to Gaussian noise in communication systems where pilot symbol assisted modulation is employed to compensate for Rician fading distortion. This paper introduces two functions in addition to conventional fading estimation methods using Wiener interpolation, etc. The first is the weighted average function for reducing the estimation errors of the fading distortion detected by pilot symbols. The second is the moving average function for estimating the phase errors that are residual after being compensated for by the estimated fading distortion. This paper evaluates the bit error rate (BER) performance for the proposed method in both Rician fading channel and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel by computer simulation. Simulation results verify that the BER performance of the proposed method is superior to that of a conventional method in both Rician fading channel and AWGN channel. Simulation results also confirm that the degradation of the BER performance of the proposed method is only 0.1 dB in AWGN channel and only 0.3 dB in Rician fading channel compared with the theoretical curves even if we reduce the number of computations by simplifying the calculation of interpolation coefficients optimized for Wiener interpolation.
