  • Performance Improvement of PRML System for (1, 7) RLL Code

    The performance improvement of the partial response maximum-likelihood (PRML) system for (1, 7) run-length limited (RLL) code is studied. As a new PRML system, PR (1, 1, 0, 1, 1) system called modified E2PR4 (ME2PR4 ) followed by Viterbi detector for (1, 7) RLL code is proposed. At first, a determination method of the tap weights in transversal filter to equalize to PR (1, 1, 0, 1, 1) characteristic taking account of a noise correlation is described. And the equalization characteristics of the transversal filter are evaluated. Then, a Viterbi detector for ME2PR4 utilizing the constraint of run-length of (1, 7) RLL code is presented. Finally, the bit-error rate is obtained by computer simulation and the performance is compared with that of the conventional PRML systems called PR4, EPR4 and E2PR4 systems with Viterbi detector. The results show that among these systems our system exhibits the best performance and the SNR improvement increases with the increase in the linear density.

  • Polarization Effects on the Effective Dielectric Constant of a Medium containing Randomly Distributed Dielectric Cylinders

    A piece of information on the polarization effects on the effective dielectric constant εeff of a medium whose dielectric circular cylinders are randomly distributed is obtained by analyzing εeff for both E-wave and H-wave incidences. Our numerical analysis shows clearly the difference of εeff between E-wave and H-wave incidences and also shows the difference of εeff between our method and the Foldy's approximation.

  • On Attractive Force of Evanescent Electromagnetic Field on Dielectric Slab*

    The electromagnetic force of evanescent field acting on dielectric slab is studied with the use of Maxwell stress tensor. The results show that dielectrics slab may receive always an attractive force when the incident wave is evanescent field while a pressure or an attractive force when the wave is propagating one. The magnitude of the attractive force by evanescent field is much larger than that of the propagating wave. And here some numerical examples are given.

  • On a Class of Byte-Error-Correcting Codes from Algebraic Curves and Their Fast Decoding Algorithm

    In this paper we propose a class of byte-error-correcting codes derived from algebraic curves which is a generalization on the Reed-Solomon codes, and present their fast parallel decoding algorithm. Our algorithm can correct up to (m + b -θ)/2b byte-errors for the byte length b, where m + b -θ + 1dG for the Goppa designed distance dG. This decoding algorithm can be parallelized. In this algorithm, for our code over the finite field GF (q), the total complexity for finding byte-error locations is O (bt(t + q - 1)) with time complexity O (t(t + q - 1)) and space complexity O(b), and the total complexity for finding error values is O (bt(b + q - 1)) with time complexity O (b(b + q - 1)) and space complexity O (t), where t(m + b -θ)/2b. Our byte-error-correcting algorithm is superior to the conventional fast decoding algorithm for randomerrors in regard to the number of correcting byte-errors in several cases.

  • Compression Coding Using an Optical Model for a Pair of Range and Grey-Scale Images of 3D Objects

    When an image of a 3D object is transmitted or recorded, its range image as well its grey-scale image are required. In this paper, we propose a method of coding for efficient compression of a pair of a pair of range and grey-scale images of 3D objects. We use Lambertian reflection optical model to model the relationship between a 3D object shape and it's brightness. Good illuminant direction estimation leads to good grey-scale image generation and furthermore effects compression results. A method for estimating the illuminant derection and composite albedo from grey-scale image statistics is presented. We propose an approach for estimating the slant angle of illumination based on an optical model from a pair of range and grey-scale images. Estimation result shows that our approach is better. Using the estimated parameters of illuminant direction and composite albedo a synthetic grey-scale image is generated. For comparison, a comparison coding method is used, in which we assume that the range and grey-scale images are compressed separately. We propose an efficient compression coding method for a pair of range and grey-scale images in which we use the correlation between range and grey-scale images, and compress them together. We also evaluate the coding method on a workstation and show numerical results.

    For mobile/personal satellite systems, an ARQ protocol with low transmitter/receiver complexity as well as high throughput performance in a long Round-Trip-Delay (RTD) and even in a bad channel condition is required. In this paper, a new Selective-Repeat (SR) ARQ with multicopy retransmission is proposed and a performance on an AWGN channel is analyzed. The proposed scheme can be viewed as a modified version for SR + Stutter (ST) Scheme 2 [6]. The basic idea of the strategy is to repeat only erroneous blocks stored in the vN block transmitter buffer multiple times, when v consecutive retransmissions in SR mode are received in error, where N denotes RTD in blocks. Numerical analysis and simuration results in the case of N block transmitter/receiver buffer show that the proposed scheme presents better performance than SR + ST scheme 2 of 2N block buffer, especially that the robustness in the high BER region is remarkable.

    In 1989, Ahlswede and Dueck introduced a new formulation of Shannon theory called identification via channels. This paper presents a simple construction of codes for identification via channels when the probability of false identification is measured by its average. The proposed code achieves the identification capacity, and its construction does not require any knowledge of coding theory.

    An algorithm for finding the unequal error protection (UEP) capability of a q-ary image of a low-rate qm-ary cyclic code is presented by combining its concatenated structure with the UEP capability of concatenated codes. The results are independent of a choice of a basis to be used for expanding an element over GF (qm) into GF (q). A table of the UEP capability of binary images of low-rate Reed-Solomon codes over GF (26) is given. It is shown that the encoding and decoding algorithms for superimposed concatenated codes can be applied to a q-ary image as a linear UEP code.

    We discuss the requirements, a model and protocol for the out-channel interaction for PCS in Intelligent Networks. As PCS can utilize the DSSI function (i.e. location update, authentication), it is reasonable to consider a model and protocol of the interaction for PCS as well as DSSI. To obtain the model/protocol, two types of interactions, call-related and call-unrelated, are considered. It is necessary to enhance the Basic Call State Model (BCSM) for the former, and to introduce a state model similar to BCSM for the latter, which represents association management and component exchange between a user and the network. The authentication function allocation for the dominant traffic, location update, is discussed based on the model and protocol, and this can co-exist with the proposed generic model and protocol.

    The advantages of the use of directional antennas for portable telephones are demonstrated. They contribute to (1) reduction of power absorption into a head, (2) reduction of multi-path interference, and (3) power saving and increase of a battery life time. This paper compares directional and omni-directional antennas existing near the head of operator, in terms of radiation patterns with a head and the power absorbed into a head. It is pointed out that radiation patterns with a head are more or less directive for both types of antennas, while the power absorbed into a head is much smaller for directional antennas.

    This paper presents a configuration of circularly polarized annular-ring microstrip antenna (ARMSA) and its design method to obtain high gain and low axial ratio including the analysis of finite ground plane effect using G.T.D. for personal satellite communication use. The ARMSA excited at TM21 mode through co-planar branch-line hybrid coupler for circular polarization produces a conical pattern which has high gain in low elevation angle. The relation of gain and axial ratio versus the dielectric constant of substrate are shown and the existence of the dielectric constant which satisfies two requirements, that is, high gain and low axial ratio are clarified. For car-top application, experimental results in the L-band showed satisfactory characteristics for vehicle antenna.

    This paper proposes and investigates the adaptive multi-user equalizer based on the multi-dimensional IIR adaptive lattice filter in order to suppress the co-channel interference (CCI) in asynchronous DS/CDMA system. An asynchronous DS/CDMA system with multi-user receiver is modeled as multi-dimensional or multi-input/out system with cross-coupling that is co-channel interference. From the system model it is shown that the multi-user detection is reduced into a problem of multi-dimensional equalization for multiaccess interference as well as intersymbol interference. The proposed multi-user equalizer can improve the equalizing error of the filter, comparing with that of the multi-dimensional FIR transversal filter of which number of tap is finite. The multi-dimensional lattice filter can adaptively achieve fast and stable convergence with less taps. Since the filter can resolve correlative multiple input into orthogonal output stage by stage, CCI can be removed. Computer simulations show performance of the proposed scheme.

    For the dependent protocols to perform the server-aided RSA secret computation, the damage caused by the active attacks is greater than that by the passive attacks. Though there are two dependent proposed protocols against active attacks, the cost of the two protocols is still high. In this paper, we propose two efficient dependent protocols. Even considering the low cost of these two protocols, they can also guard against the proposed active attacks.

    M-ary orthogonal keying (MOK) systems under carrier frequency offset (CFO) are investigated. It is shown that spurious signals are introduced by the offset frequency components of spectrum after multiplication in correlation detection process, and some conditions on robust orthogonal signal sets are derived. Walsh function sets are found to be very weak against CFO, since they produce large spurious signals. As robust orthogonal signal sets against CFO, the rows of circulant Hadamard matrices are proposed and their error performanses are evaluated. The results show that they are good M-ary orthogonal signal sets in the presence of CFO.

    The performance of APP (a posteriori probability) decoding algorithm which is well known as a soft decision decoding algorithm for majority logic decodable codes is further improved by iterating the algorithm one or more times. This letter shows that there exists the optimal non-zero threshold value of the decision function that minimizes the decoded error rate in two-pass APP decoding though the optimal threshold value in one-pass APP decoding is zero.

    In this paper, we define the distortion at a certain complexity level, which is the dual quantity of the distortion-complexity. We prove a theorem dual to the theorem which we have given of the asymptotic property of the distortion-complexity. We also give a universal data-base for fixed-rate data compression with distortion and prove its asymptotic optimality.

    In this paper, a new explicit transformation method between Bezier and polynomial representation is proposed. An expression is given to approximate (n + 1) Bezier control points by another of (m + 1), and to perform simple and sufficiently good approximation without any additional transformation, such as Chebyshev polynomial. A criterion of reduction is then deduced in order to know if the given number of control points of a Bezier curve is reducible without error on the curve or not. Also an error estimation is given only in terms of control points. This method, unlike previous works, is more transparent because it is given in form of explicit expressions. Finally, we discuss some applications of this method to curve-fitting, order decreasing and increasing number of control points.

    Microcellular systems are suitable as personal mobile communication systems because of their high channel re-use efficiency and low transmission power. To implement a microcellular system, the antennas of base stations should be low enough, compared to the buildings around them, to reduce the interference to or from other base stations. In high-speed digital mobile radio communications, the time delay spread caused by multipath propagation is a significant factor in determining the maximum data transmission rate. In the case of a low-antenna-height microcellular system, the propagation characteristics rapidly change when the mobile terminal moves from a line-of-sight (LOS) location to a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) location. In this paper, the time dealy spread characteristics under LOS and NLOS conditions are examined using a geometrical street model which has a reflecting wall at one end of the street on which the base station is located. The RMS delay spreads are calculated using optical ray theory, taking into consideration the wedge diffraction on the street corner. If a reflecting wall exists, the RMS delay spread increases as the mobile terminal moves away from the base station under LOS conditions, or away from the street corner under NLOS conditions. The calculated results agree with the experimental results if measuring equipment noise is taken into consideration.

  • Josephson Array Oscillators Using Resonant Effects in Shunted Tunnel Junctions

    Resonant properties of resistance shunted tunnel junctions have been investigated using the RLCSJ model. We found that an increase in dc current resulted from an increase in impedance of the shunted tunnel junctions. The static and dynamic properties of the shunted tunnel junctions were described in detail by numerical simulations and experiments. The simulated and measured results showed good agreement in I-V characteristics. A Josephson array oscillator has been proposed using the resonant properties for increasing oscillator output impedance. We designed and fabricated the oscillator with 20 shunted tunnel junctions. The output power of the oscillator delivered to the load resistor was estimated to be about 0.5µW at 312 GHz.

    C1 class smooth interpolation by a fuzzy reasoning for a small data set is proposed. The drafting technique of a human expert is implemented by using a set of fuzzy rules. The effectiveness of the present method is verified by computer simulations and by applications to the practical interpolation problem in a power system.
