  • A New Theoretical Formulation of a General Feedback Amplifier Circuit and Its Fundamental Theorems

    A new theoretical formulation based on BIBO (Bounded Input Bounded Output) operators is proposed for a general feedback amplifier circuit. Several fundamental theorems are derived in this letter. The main theorem provides a basis for a realization of an inverse of a feedback-branch linear or nonlinear BIBO operator satisfying the associative law.

    A deeply-coupled system can feed the INS information into a GNSS receiver, and the signal tracking precision can be improved under dynamic conditions by reducing tracking loop bandwidth without losing tracking reliability. In contrast to the vector-based deep integration, the scalar-based GNSS/INS deep integration is a relatively simple and practical architecture, in which all individual DLL and PLL are still exist. Since the implementation of a deeply-couple system needs to modify the firmware of a commercial hardware GNSS receiver, very few studies are reported on deep integration based on hardware platform, especially from academic institutions. This implementation-complexity issue has impeded the development of the deeply-coupled GNSS receivers. This paper introduces a scalar-based MEMS IMU/GNSS deeply-coupled system based on an integrated embedded hardware platform for real-time implementation. The design of the deeply-coupled technologies is described including the system architecture, the model of the inertial-aided tracking loop, and the relevant tracking errors analysis. The implementation issues, which include platform structure, real-time optimization, and generation of aiding information, are discussed as well. The performance of the inertial aided tracking loop and the final navigation solution of the developed deeply-coupled system are tested through the dynamic road test scenarios created by a hardware GNSS/INS simulator with GPS L1 C/A signals and low-level MEMS IMU analog signals outputs. The dynamic tests show that the inertial-aided PLL enables a much narrow tracking loop bandwidth (e.g. 3Hz) under dynamic scenarios; while the non-aided loop would lose lock with such narrow loop bandwidth once maneuvering commences. The dynamic zero-baseline tests show that the Doppler observation errors can be reduced by more than 50% with inertial aided tracking loop. The corresponding navigation results also show that the deep integration improved the velocity precision significantly.

    Thanks to the achievements in wireless technology, maximum data rate of wireless LAN systems was rapidly increased recently. As a key part of the WEP and the WPA security for the wireless LAN system, throughput of RC4 must be significantly improved also. This paper proposes two high throughput RC4 architectures. The first one is a RAM-based RC4 using a single of 256-byte tri-port RAM to store the S-box. The core generates 4bits of ciphering key per clock cycle. This paper also proves that 4bits/cycle is the maximum throughput can be achieved by a RAM-based RC4 circuit. The second architecture is a Register-based M-byte RC4 that uses a set of registers to store the S-box. It is able to generate multiple bytes of ciphering key per clock cycle, and is proposed as a novel solution for designing extremely high throughput RC4 core for future WLAN systems. Base on this proposal, a 4-byte RC4 core is developed (M=4). The synthesis results in 90nm ASIC show that: As the same throughput's requirement, the proposed RAM-based and Register-based RC4 can respectively save 60% and 50% of power consumption as compare to that of the most recently works. Moreover, the proposed Register-based design is the best candidate for achieving high throughput at low frequency.

    This paper proposes a secure wireless network system required for an ambient information society; it forms a privacy zone wherein terminals can securely communicate secret information using an arbitrary general radio channel. For this system, we introduce a scheme using a side-information from a special node. The information is used as an encryption key so that the detectable region of the key defines a privacy zone. We implement the scheme on the basis of IEEE 802.15.4 and realize the world's first ambient network platform with the above functionality. An experiment and demonstration show the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • A Partially Driven Array Antenna Backed by a Reflector with a Reduction in the Number of Driven Elements by Up to 67%

    This paper describes a novel technique to replace some of the driven elements in an array antenna with parasitic elements. First, the antenna characteristics are studied by simulation for a basic unit array with one driven and two parasitic elements. The entire antenna is backed with a flat reflector to conform to practical applications. The parasitic elements are excited by the neighboring driven elements through the electromagnetic coupling effect. It is shown that at the optimal coupling condition, the radiation patterns are almost identical with those of an array antenna whose elements are all driven without coupling. The simulation result is confirmed by performing an experiment at 5.8GHz (λ =51.7mm). Finally, a 12-element array is formed by combining four unit arrays. The simulation results show that the maximum antenna gain is 19.4dBi, indicating that there is no penalty with respect to the antenna gain of a fully driven 12-element array. Therefore, the array antenna can be considerably simplified by replacing 67% of its elements with parasitic elements.

  • Peer-to-Peer Content Multicast Using Off-Peak Periods in Wireless Access Links

    Recently, many kinds of content are being circulated within a great many service-specific overlay networks. When the content is not extremely delay-sensitive, content circulation between wireless terminals can be realized without additional resources by using off-peak periods in wireless access links. In such content circulation, peer-to-peer content multicast is a promising approach to reduce the load on the centralized server. However, to minimize battery drain, each wireless terminal can only forward content to a restricted number of neighboring terminals once it has received the content. This paper proposes an efficient forwarding scheme for peer-to-peer content multicast between the wireless terminals intermittently connected with the backhaul network. In the proposed scheme, a restricted number of terminals with an earlier start time of off-peak periods are selected to forward the content when the number of forwarding hops from the source terminal is less than or equal to a predetermined threshold. In contrast, a restricted number of terminals are selected randomly when the number of forwarding hops exceeds the threshold. This paper clarifies that the proposed hybrid forwarding scheme can multicast the content to many terminals within an arbitrarily restricted period. A guideline to determine the optimum threshold for switching the terminal selection method in the proposed hybrid scheme is derived from simulation results.

    This letter presents a technique to reduce the complexity of the soft-output multiple-input multiple-output symbol detection based on Dijkstra's algorithm. By observing that the greedy behavior of Dijkstra's algorithm can entail unnecessary tree-visits for the symbol detection, this letter proposes a technique to evict non-promising candidates early from the search space. The early eviction technique utilizes layer information to determine if a candidate is promising, which is simple but effective. When the SNR is 30dB for 6×6 64-QAM systems, the average number of tree-visits in the proposed method is reduced by 72.1% in comparison to that in the conventional Dijkstra's algorithm-based symbol detection without the early eviction.

    In this study, we investigate the use of scheduling algorithms to support coordinated multipoint (CoMP) operation for Long Term Evolution (LTE)-Advanced systems studied in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). CoMP, which improves cooperative transmission among network nodes (transmission points: TPs) and reduces or eliminates interTP interference, enabling performance improvements in cell edge throughputs. Although scheduling algorithms in LTE systems have been extensively investigated from the single cell operation perspective, those extension to CoMP where each user equipment (UE) has multiple channel state information (CSI) feedbacks require further consideration on proportional fairness (PF) metric calculation while maintaining PF criteria. To this end, we propose to apply a scaling factor in accordance with the number of CSI feedbacks demanded for the UE. To evaluate the benefits of this scaling factor, multicell system-level simulations that take account of channel estimation errors are performed, and the results confirmed that our improved algorithm enables fairness to be maintained.

    This paper deals with the problem of underdetermined blind source separation (BSS) where the number of sources is unknown. We propose a BSS approach that simultaneously estimates the number of sources, separates the sources based on the sparseness of speech, estimates the direction of arrival of each source, and performs permutation alignment. We confirmed experimentally that reasonably good separation was obtained with the present method without specifying the number of sources.

  • A Travel-Efficient Driving Assistance Scheme in VANETs by Providing Recommended Speed

    Vehicles' speed is one of the key factors in vehicle travel efficiency, as speed is related to vehicle travel time, travel safety, fuel consumption, and exhaust gas emissions (e.g., CO2 emissions). Therefore, to improve the travel efficiency, a recommended speed calculation scheme is proposed to assist driving in Vehicle Ad hoc networks (VANETs) circumstances. In the proposed scheme, vehicles' current speed and space headway are obtained by Vehicle-to-Roadside unit (V2R) communication and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication. Based on the vehicles' current speed and adjacent vehicles' space headway, a recommended speed is calculated by on-board units installed in the vehicles, and then this recommended speed is provided to drivers. The drivers can change their speed to the recommended speed. At the recommended speed, vehicle travel efficiency can be improved: vehicles can arrive at destinations in a shorter travel time with fewer stop times, lower fuel consumption, and less CO2 emission. In particular, when approaching intersections, vehicles can pass through the intersections with less red light waiting time and a higher non-stop passing rate.

    Automated or semi-automated annotation is a practical solution for large-scale corpus construction. However, the special characteristics of Thai language, such as lack of word-boundary and sentence-boundary markers, trigger several issues in automatic corpus annotation. This paper presents a multi-stage annotation framework, containing two stages of chunking and three stages of tagging. The two chunking stages are pattern matching-based named entity (NE) extraction and dictionary-based word segmentation while the three succeeding tagging stages are dictionary-, pattern- and statist09812490981249ical-based tagging. Applying heuristics of ambiguity priority, NE extraction is performed first on an original text using a set of patterns, in the order of pattern ambiguity. Next, the remaining text is segmented into words with a dictionary. The obtained chunks are then tagged with types of named entities or parts-of-speech (PoS) using dictionaries, patterns and statistics. Focusing on the reduction of human intervention in corpus construction, our experimental results show that the dictionary-based tagging process can assign unique tags to 64.92% of the words, with the remaining of 24.14% unknown words and 10.94% ambiguously tagged words. Later, the pattern-based tagging can reduce unknown words to only 13.34% while the statistical-based tagging can solve the ambiguously tagged words to only 3.01%.

    This paper proposes an opportunistic feedback and user selection method for a multiuser two-way relay channel (MU-TWRC) in a time-varying environments where a base station (BS) and a selected mobile station (MS), one of K moving MSs, exchange messages during two time slots via an amplify-and-forward relay station. Specifically, under the assumption of perfect channel reciprocity, we analyze the outage probabilities of several channel feedback scenarios, including the proposed scheme. Based on the analysis, the transmission rates are optimized and the optimal user selection method is proposed to maximize the expected sum throughput. The simulation results indicate that, with opportunistic feedback, the performance can be significantly improved compared to that without feedback. Moreover, the performance is nearly identical to that with full feedback, and close to the case of perfect channel state information at BS for low mobility MSs.

  • Mode Analysis of Phase-Constant Nonreciprocity in Ferrite-Embedded CRLH Metamaterials

    Phase-nonreciprocal ε-negative and CRLH metamaterials are analyzed using a new approach in which field analysis and transmission line model are combined. The examined one-dimensional nonreciprocal metamaterials are composed of a ferrite-embedded microstrip line periodically loaded with shunt stubs. In the present approach, the phase constant nonreciprocity is analytically estimated and formulated under the assumption of operating frequency far above the ferromagnetic resonant frequency. The present approach gives a good explanation to the phenomenon in terms of ferromagnetic properties of the ferrite and asymmetric geometry of the metamaterial structure, showing a good agreement with numerical simulations and experiment.

    In this paper, we propose a speech-presence uncertainty estimation to improve the global soft decision-based speech enhancement technique by using the spectral gradient scheme. The conventional soft decision-based speech enhancement technique uses a fixed ratio (Q) of the a priori speech-presence and speech-absence probabilities to derive the speech-absence probability (SAP). However, we attempt to adaptively change Q according to the spectral gradient between the current and past frames as well as the status of the voice activity in the previous two frames. As a result, the distinct values of Q to each frequency in each frame are assigned in order to improve the performance of the SAP by tracking the robust a priori information of the speech-presence in time.

  • Wideband 3D Folded Dipole Antenna with Feed Line for Small Terminal

    Folded dipole antenna with feed line (FDAFL) whose relative bandwidth is 65% (VSWR≤3) has been reported as a wideband planar antenna for a small terminal. However, this antenna is constructed outside of the ground plane (50×80mm2) by 12mm. In this study, we analyze the antenna configurations of FDAFL in 3D so that the antenna does not protrude from the ground plane as much as possible. Two different 3D antenna models derived from FDAFL are investigated. The first model is folded over the ground plane, and the second one is folded outside of the ground plane. The relative bandwidth, the VSWR characteristics and radiation patterns are studied. As a result, it is confirmed that antenna prominence could be reduced and broadband characteristics over 74% and 83% are obtained by the 3D models, respectively, which are wider than the bandwidth of conventional 2D model. Thus, FDAFL could be used in both 2D and 3D for a small terminal.

  • Speaker-Independent Speech Emotion Recognition Based on Two-Layer Multiple Kernel Learning

    In this paper, a two-layer Multiple Kernel Learning (MKL) scheme for speaker-independent speech emotion recognition is presented. In the first layer, MKL is used for feature selection. The training samples are separated into n groups according to some rules. All groups are used for feature selection to obtain n sparse feature subsets. The intersection and the union of all feature subsets are the result of our feature selection methods. In the second layer, MKL is used again for speech emotion classification with the selected features. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed two-layer MKL scheme, we compare it with state-of-the-art results. It is shown that our scheme results in large gain in performance. Furthermore, another experiment is carried out to compare our feature selection method with other popular ones. And the result proves the effectiveness of our feature selection method.

    In this letter, we consider the global exponential stabilization problem by output feedback for a class of nonlinear systems. Along with a newly proposed matrix inequality condition, the proposed control method has improved flexibility in dealing with nonlinearity, over the existing methods. Analysis and examples are given to illustrate the improved features of our control method.

    In this paper, we study on direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation error reduction by Khatri-Rao (KR) product extended array in the presence of correlated waves. Recently, a simple array signal processing technique called KR product extended array has been proposed. By using the technique, degrees-of-freedom of an array can be easily increased. However, DOA estimation accuracy deteriorates when correlated or coherent waves arrive. Such highly correlated waves often arrive for radar application, hence error reduction technique has been desired. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method for error reduction preprocessing scheme by using N-th root of matrix. The N-th root of matrix has a similar effect to the spatial smoothing preprocessing for highly correlated signals. As a result, DOA estimation error due to signal correlation will be reduced. The optimal order of N depends on the data itself. In this paper, a simple iterative method to obtain adaptive N is also proposed. Computer simulation results are provided to show performance of the proposed method.

  • Detection of the Number of Signals with Fewer Sensors than Sources

    In this paper, a method is introduced that can detect the number of incident signals (NIS) even there are fewer antennas than NIS. Previous works on NIS detection methods assumed that the number of antennas always exceeded NIS. In the DOA estimation field, the DOA estimation is possible, even if NIS exceeds the number of antennas, by extending the degrees of freedom of array (DOFA) using a modified array configuration, such as a nested array (NA). The information of NIS is required in advance to accurately estimate DOA, however, it has not been investigated deeply when NIS is larger than the number of antennas. In this paper, a NIS detection method based on the DOFA extending process using NA is proposed. One of the important issues in NIS detection is the detection metric. As one of the simple metrics, the ratio of adjacent eigenvalues (RAE) has been used. However, the direct application of RAE may not achieve adequate NIS detection performance. Therefore, we propose a metric based on the modified ratio of adjacent eigenvalues (MRAE) avoids the issue of RAE. Numerical results show that the metric based on MRAE can achieve proper NIS detection performance even if NIS is larger than the number of antennas.

    We present an acoustic model adaptation method where the transformation matrix for a new speaker is given by the product of bases and a weight matrix. The bases are built from the parallel factor analysis 2 (PARAFAC2) of training speakers' transformation matrices. We perform continuous speech recognition experiments using the WSJ0 corpus.
