    The 5th-generation mobile communication uses multi-element array antennas in not only base stations but also mobile terminals. In order to design multi-element array antennas efficiently, it is important to acquire the characteristics of the direction of arrival (DOA) and direction of departure (DOD), and a highly accurate and simple measurement method is required. This paper proposes a highly accurate and simple method to measure DOA and DOD by applying synthetic aperture (SA) processed at both Rx and Tx sides. It is also shown that the addition of beam scanning to the proposed method can reduce the measurement time while maintaining the peak detection resolution. Moreover, experiments in an anechoic chamber and a shielded room using actual wave sources confirm that DOA and DOD can be detected with high accuracy.

    With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), short packet transmissions will dominate the future wireless communication. However, traditional coherent demodulation and channel estimation schemes require large pilot overhead, which may be highly inefficient for short packets in multipath fading scenarios. This paper proposes a novel pilot-free short packet structure based on the association of modulation on conjugate-reciprocal zeros (MOCZ) and tail-biting convolutional codes (TBCC), where a noncoherent demodulation and decoding scheme is designed without the channel state information (CSI) at the transceivers. We provide a construction method of constellation sets and demodulation rule for M-ary MOCZ. By deriving low complexity log-likelihood ratios (LLR) for M-ary MOCZ, we offer a reasonable balance between energy and bandwidth efficiency for joint coding and modulation scheme. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme can attain significant performance and throughput gains compared to the pilot-based coherent modulation scheme over multipath fading channels.

    This paper proposes a sub-signal channel modulation scheme for hitless redundancy switching systems that offers highly confidential communications. A hitless redundancy switching system prevents frame loss by using multiple routes to forward the same frame. Although most studies on redundancy switching systems deal with frame duplication, elimination, and selection of redundant paths for the main signal, we focus on the transmission of the sub-signal channel. We introduce mathematical expressions to model the transmission rate and bit error rate of the sub-signal channel. To evaluate the validity of the models, we conduct numerical simulations to calculate the sub-signal transmission rate, main-signal transmission rate, and bit error rate of the sub-signal channel at physical transmission rates of 100Mb/s, 1Gb/s, and 10Gb/s. We discuss how to design sub-signal channel modulation on the basis of the evaluation results. We further discuss applications of sub-signal modulation in terms of network size and jitter.

    Compared with the unicast scenario, X channels with multicast messaging can support richer transmission scenarios. The transmission efficiency of the wireless multicast X channel is an important and open problem. This article studies the degrees of freedom of a propagation-delay based multicast X channel with two transmitters and arbitrary receivers, where each transmitter sends K different messages and each receiver desires K - 1 of them from each transmitter. The cyclic polynomial approach is adopted for modeling and analysis. The DoF upper bound is analyzed and shown to be unreachable. Then a suboptimal scheme with one extra time-slot cycle is proposed, which uses the cyclic interference alignment method and achieves a DoF of K - 1. Finally, the feasibility conditions in the Euclidean space are derived and the potential applications are demonstrated for underwater acoustic and terrestrial radio communications.

    Crosstalk between lines plays an important role in the transmission of signal. Hence it is of great significance to establish the transmission lines model accurately to evaluate factors affecting crosstalk coupling between lines and to improve the anti-interference capability of the system. As twisted-pair line is widely used for its unique twist structure which improves the anti-interference performance of cables, this paper presents a method of constructing transmission lines model of the shielded twisted-pair line (STP) with two twisted pairs based on S-parameters. Firstly, the transmission lines model of STP with one twisted pair is established. The establishment of distributed capacitance matrix of this model depends on the dielectric constant of insulation layer that surrounds a conductor, but the dielectric constant is often unknown. In this respect, a method to obtain the distributed capacitance matrix based on the S-parameters of this model is proposed. Due to twisting, there is a great deal of variability between the distribution parameters along the length of the STP. As the spatial distribution of conductors in the cross-section of twisted-pair line vary along with the cable length, the distribution parameters matrices also change as they move. The cable is divided into several segments, and the transmission lines model of STP is obtained with the cascade of each segment model. For the STP with two twisted pairs, the crosstalk between pairs is analyzed based on the mixed mode S-parameters. Combined with the transmission lines model of STP with one twisted pair, that of STP with two twisted pairs is obtained. The terminal response voltage can be calculated from the transmission lines model and cable terminal conditions. The validity of the transmission lines model is verified by the consistency between the terminal responses calculated by the model and by the simulated. As the theoretical and simulation results are compatible, the modeling method for the STP with two twisted pairs can be used for the STP with more twisted pairs. In practical engineering application, S-parameters and mixed mode S-parameters can be obtained by testing. That means the transmission lines model of STP can be established based on the test results.

    Aiming at the problem of the deterioration of the contact performance caused by the wear debris generated during the fretting wear of the electrical connector, low-frequency fretting wear experiments were carried out on the contacts of electrical connectors, the accumulation and distribution of the wear debris were detected by the electrical capacitance tomography technology; the influence of fretting cycles, vibration direction, vibration frequency and vibration amplitude on the accumulation and distribution of wear debris were analyzed; the correlation between characteristic value of wear debris and contact resistance value was studied, and a performance degradation model based on the accumulation and distribution of wear debris was built. The results show that fretting wear and performance degradation are the most serious in axial vibration; the characteristic value of wear debris and contact resistance are positively correlated with the fretting cycles, vibration frequency and vibration amplitude; there is a strong correlation between the sum of characteristic value of wear debris and the contact resistance value; the prediction error of ABC-SVR model of fretting wear performance degradation of electrical connectors constructed by the characteristic value of wear debris is less than 6%. Therefore, the characteristic value of wear debris in contact subareas can quantitatively describe the degree of fretting wear and the process of performance degradation.

    In this study, the bending losses of chalcogenide glass channel optical waveguides consisting of an As2Se3 core and an As2S3 lower cladding layer were numerically evaluated across the astronomical N-band, which is the mid-infrared spectral range between the 8 µm and 12 µm wavelengths. The results reveal the design rules for bent waveguides in mid-infrared astrophotonic devices.

    This paper analyzes a blockchain network forming a directed acyclic graph (DAG), called a DAG-type blockchain, from the viewpoint of graph algorithm theory. To use a DAG-type blockchain, NP-hard graph optimization problems on the DAG are required to be solved. Although various problems for undirected and directed graphs can be efficiently solved by using the notions of graph parameters, these currently known parameters are meaningless for DAGs, which implies that it is hopeless to design efficient algorithms based on the parameters for such problems. In this work, we propose a novel graph parameter for directed graphs called a DAG-pathwidth, which represents the closeness to a directed path. This is an extension of the pathwidth, a well-known graph parameter for undirected graphs. We analyze the features of the DAG-pathwidth and prove that computing the DAG-pathwidth of a DAG (directed graph in general) is NP-complete. Finally, we propose an efficient algorithm for a variant of the maximum k-independent set problem for the DAG-type blockchain when the DAG-pathwidth of the input graph is small.

    In many situations, abnormal sounds, called adventitious sounds, are included with the lung sounds of a subject suffering from pulmonary diseases. Thus, a method to automatically detect abnormal sounds in auscultation was proposed. The acoustic features of normal lung sounds for control subjects and abnormal lung sounds for patients are expressed using hidden markov models (HMMs) to distinguish between normal and abnormal lung sounds. Furthermore, abnormal sounds were detected in a noisy environment, including heart sounds, using a heart-sound model. However, the F1-score obtained in detecting abnormal respiration was low (0.8493). Moreover, the duration and acoustic properties of segments of respiratory, heart, and adventitious sounds varied. In our previous method, the appropriate HMMs for the heart and adventitious sound segments were constructed. Although the properties of the types of adventitious sounds varied, an appropriate topology for each type was not considered. In this study, appropriate HMMs for the segments of each type of adventitious sound and other segments were constructed. The F1-score was increased (0.8726) by selecting a suitable topology for each segment. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    We present an interactive modeling system for Japanese castles. We develop an user interface that can generate the fundamental structure of the castle tower consisting of stone walls, turrets, and roofs. By clicking on the screen displaying the 3D space with the mouse, relevant parameters are calculated automatically to generate 3D models of Japanese-style castles. We use characteristic curves that often appear in ancient Japanese architecture for the realistic modeling of the castles. We evaluate the effectiveness of our method by comparing the castle generated by our method with a commercially-available 3D mode of a castle.

    Self-directed learning in an appropriately designed environment can help learners retain knowledge tied to experience and motivate them to learn more. For teachers, however, it is difficult to design an environment to give to learners and to give feedback that reflects respect for their independent efforts, while for learners, it is difficult to set learning objectives on their own and to construct knowledge correctly based on their own efforts. In this research, we developed a learning support system that provides a mechanism for constructing an observational learning environment using virtual space and that encourages self-directed knowledge discovery. We confirmed that this system contributes to a learner's structural understanding and its retention and to a greater desire to learn at a level comparable to that of concept map creation, another active learning method.

    Broadcast services for wireless local area networks (WLANs) are being standardized in the IEEE 802.11 task group bc. Envisaging the upcoming coexistence of broadcast access points (APs) with densely-deployed legacy APs, this paper addresses a learning-based spatial reuse with only partial receiver-awareness. This partial awareness means that the broadcast APs can leverage few acknowledgment frames (ACKs) from recipient stations (STAs). This is in view of the specific concerns of broadcast communications. In broadcast communications for a very large number of STAs, ACK implosions occur unless some STAs are stopped from responding with ACKs. Given this, the main contribution of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility to improve the robustness of learning-based spatial reuse to hidden interferers only with the partial receiver-awareness while discarding any re-training of broadcast APs. The core idea is to leverage robust adversarial reinforcement learning (RARL), where before a hidden interferer is installed, a broadcast AP learns a rate adaptation policy in a competition with a proxy interferer that provides jamming signals intelligently. Therein, the recipient STAs experience interference and the partial STAs provide a feedback overestimating the effect of interference, allowing the broadcast AP to select a data rate to avoid frame losses in a broad range of recipient STAs. Simulations demonstrate the suppression of the throughput degradation under a sudden installation of a hidden interferer, indicating the feasibility of acquiring robustness to the hidden interferer.

    We have proposed and developed e-Tile for wall decoration and ornaments for interior/exterior. A prototype of 2m×2m large energy-saving reflective panel was realized by arraying 400 e-Tiles on a flat plane. Prototypes of cubic displays were also realized by constructing e-Tiles to cubic shape. Artistic display effects and 3D impression could be found in these cubic prototypes. We hope e-Tile is a promising solution to extend the application field of e-Paper to decorative use including architectural applications.

    Intelligent reconfigurable surfaces (IRS) have attracted much attention from both industry and academia due to their performance improving capability and low complexity for 6G wireless communication systems. In this letter, we introduce an IRS-assisted space-time line code (STLC) technique. The STLC was introduced as a promising technique to acquire the optimal diversity gain in 1×2 single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channel without channel state information at receiver (CSIR). Using the cosine similarity theorem, we propose a novel phase-steering technique for the proposed IRS-assisted STLC technique. We also mathematically characterize the proposed IRS-assisted STLC technique in terms of outage probability and bit-error rate (BER). Based on computer simulations, it is shown that the results of analysis shows well match with the computer simulation results for various communication scenarios.

    The package manager (PM) is crucial to most technology stacks, acting as a broker to ensure that a verified dependency package is correctly installed, configured, or removed from an application. Diversity in technology stacks has led to dozens of PMs with various features. While our recent study indicates that package management features of PM are related to end-user experiences, it is unclear what those issues are and what information is required to resolve them. In this paper, we have investigated PM issues faced by end-users through an empirical study of content on Stack Overflow (SO). We carried out a qualitative analysis of 1,131 questions and their accepted answer posts for three popular PMs (i.e., Maven, npm, and NuGet) to identify issue types, underlying causes, and their resolutions. Our results confirm that end-users struggle with PM tool usage (approximately 64-72%). We observe that most issues are raised by end-users due to lack of instructions and errors messages from PM tools. In terms of issue resolution, we find that external link sharing is the most common practice to resolve PM issues. Additionally, we observe that links pointing to useful resources (i.e., official documentation websites, tutorials, etc.) are most frequently shared, indicating the potential for tool support and the ability to provide relevant information for PM end-users.

  • Broadcast with Tree Selection from Multiple Spanning Trees on an Overlay Network Open Access

    On an overlay network where a number of nodes work autonomously in a decentralized way, the efficiency of broadcasts has a significant impact on the performance of distributed systems built on the network. While a broadcast method using a spanning tree produces a small number of messages, the routing path lengths are prone to be relatively large. Moreover, when multiple nodes can be source nodes, inefficient broadcasts often occur because the efficient tree topology differs for each node. To address this problem, we propose a novel protocol in which a source node selects an efficient tree from multiple spanning trees when broadcasting. Our method shortens routing paths while maintaining a small number of messages. We examined path lengths and the number of messages for broadcasts on various topologies. As a result, especially for a random graph, our proposed method shortened path lengths by approximately 28% compared with a method using a spanning tree, with almost the same number of messages.

    Aiming at the problem of spatial focus regions distribution dispersion and dislocation in feature pyramid networks and insufficient feature dependency acquisition in both spatial and channel dimensions, this paper proposes a spatial-temporal aggregated shuffle attention for video instance segmentation (STASA-VIS). First, an mixed subsampling (MS) module to embed activating features from the low-level target area of feature pyramid into the high-level is designed, so as to aggregate spatial information on target area. Taking advantage of the coherent information in video frames, STASA-VIS uses the first ones of every 5 video frames as the key-frames and then propagates the keyframe feature maps of the pyramid layers forward in the time domain, and fuses with the non-keyframe mixed subsampled features to achieve time-domain consistent feature aggregation. Finally, STASA-VIS embeds shuffle attention in the backbone to capture the pixel-level pairwise relationship and dimensional dependencies among the channels and reduce the computation. Experimental results show that the segmentation accuracy of STASA-VIS reaches 41.2%, and the test speed reaches 34FPS, which is better than the state-of-the-art one stage video instance segmentation (VIS) methods in accuracy and achieves real-time segmentation.

    Locally repairable codes have attracted lots of interest in Distributed Storage Systems. If a symbol of a code can be repaired respectively by t disjoint groups of other symbols, each groups has size at most r, we say that the code symbol has (r, t)-locality. In this paper, we employ parity-check matrix to construct information single-parity (r, t)-locality LRCs. All our codes attain the Singleton-like bound of LRCs where each repair group contains a single parity symbol and thus are optimal.

    This paper proposes a low-power 100Gb/s four-level pulse amplitude modulation driver (PAM-4 Driver) based on linear distortion compensation structure for thin-film Lithium Niobate (LiNbO3) modulators, which manages to achieve high linearity in the output. The inductive peaking technology and open drain structure enable the overall circuit to achieve a 31-GHz bandwidth. With an area of 0.292 mm2, the proposed PAM-4 driver chip is designed in a 65-nm process to achieve power consumption of 37.7 mW. Post-layout simulation results show that the power efficiency is 0.37 mW/Gb/s, RLM is more than 96%, and the FOM value is 8.84.

    Paragraph segmentation is a text segmentation task. Iikura et al. achieved excellent results on paragraph segmentation by introducing focal loss to Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers. In this study, we investigated paragraph segmentation on Daily News and Novel datasets. Based on the approach proposed by Iikura et al., we used auxiliary loss to train the model to improve paragraph segmentation performance. Consequently, the average F1-score obtained by the approach of Iikura et al. was 0.6704 on the Daily News dataset, whereas that of our approach was 0.6801. Our approach thus improved the performance by approximately 1%. The performance improvement was also confirmed on the Novel dataset. Furthermore, the results of two-tailed paired t-tests indicated that there was a statistical significance between the performance of the two approaches.
