Maximum likelihood block signal detection employing QR decomposition and M-algorithm (QRM-MLBD) can significantly improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of single-carrier (SC) transmission while significantly reducing the computational complexity compared to maximum likelihood detection (MLD). However, its computational complexity is still high. In this paper, we propose the computationally efficient 2-step QRM-MLBD. Compared to conventional QRM-MLBD, the number of symbol candidates can be reduced by using preliminary decision made by minimum mean square error based frequency-domain equalization (MMSE-FDE). The BER performance achievable by 2-step QRM-MLBD is evaluated by computer simulation. It is shown that it can significantly reduce the computational complexity while achieving almost the same BER performance as the conventional QRM-MLBD.

Requirements are elicited step by step during the requirements engineering (RE) process. However, some types of requirements are elicited completely after the scheduled requirements elicitation process is finished. Such a situation is regarded as problematic situation. In our study, the difficulties of eliciting various kinds of requirements is observed by components. We refer to the components as observation targets (OTs) and introduce the word “Requirements maturation.” It means when and how requirements are elicited completely in the project. The requirements maturation is discussed on physical and logical OTs. OTs Viewed from a logical viewpoint are called logical OTs, e.g. quality requirements. The requirements of physical OTs, e.g., modules, components, subsystems, etc., includes functional and non-functional requirements. They are influenced by their requesters' environmental changes, as well as developers' technical changes. In order to infer the requirements maturation period of each OT, we need to know how much these factors influence the OTs' requirements maturation. According to the observation of actual past projects, we defined the PRINCE (Pre Requirements Intelligence Net Consideration and Evaluation) model. It aims to guide developers in their observation of the requirements maturation of OTs. We quantitatively analyzed the actual cases with their requirements elicitation process and extracted essential factors that influence the requirements maturation. The results of interviews of project managers are analyzed by WEKA, a data mining system, from which the decision tree was derived. This paper introduces the PRINCE model and the category of logical OTs to be observed. The decision tree that helps developers infer the maturation type of an OT is also described. We evaluate the tree through real projects and discuss its ability to infer the requirements maturation types.

We propose an outband sensing-based IEEE 802.11h protocol without a full dynamic frequency selection (DFS) test. This scheme has two features. Firstly, every station performs a cooperative outband sensing, instead of inband sensing during a quiet period. And secondly, as soon as a current channel becomes bad, every station immediately hops to a good channel using the result of outband sensing. Simulation shows the proposed scheme increases network throughput against the legacy IEEE 802.11h.

Silicon Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) have been proposed to exploit inherent characteristics caused by process variations, such as transistor size, threshold voltage and so on, and to produce an inexpensive and tamper-resistant device such as IC identification, authentication and key generation. We have focused on the arbiter-PUF utilizing the relative delay-time difference between the equivalent paths. The conventional arbiter-PUF has a technical issue, which is low uniqueness caused by the ununiformity on response-generation. To enhance the uniqueness, a novel arbiter-based PUF utilizing the Response Generation according to the Delay Time Measurement (RG-DTM) scheme, has been proposed. In the conventional arbiter-PUF, the response 0 or 1 is assigned according to the single threshold of relative delay-time difference. On the contrary, the response 0 or 1 is assigned according to the multiple threshold of relative delay-time difference in the RG-DTM PUF. The conventional and RG-DTM PUF were designed and fabricated with 0.18 µm CMOS technology. The Hamming distances (HDs) between different chips, which indicate the uniqueness, were calculated by 256-bit responses from the identical challenges on each chip. The ideal distribution of HDs, which indicates high uniqueness, is achieved in the RG-DTM PUF using 16 thresholds of relative delay-time differences. The generative stability, which is the fluctuation of responses in the same environment, and the environmental stability, which is the changes of responses in the different environment were also evaluated. There is a trade-off between high uniqueness and high stability, however, the experimental data shows that the RG-DTM PUF has extremely smaller false matching probability in the identification compared to the conventional PUF.

This paper provides an overview on the recent research on networked control with an emphasis on the tight relation between the two fields of control and communication. In particular, we present several results focusing on data rate constraints in networked control systems, which can be modeled as quantization of control-related signals. The motivation is to reduce the amount of data rate as much as possible in obtaining control objectives such as stabilization and control performance under certain measures. We also discuss some approaches towards control problems based on techniques from signal processing and information theory.

The frequency regions and spectral features that can be used to measure the perceived similarity and continuity of voice quality are reported here. A perceptual evaluation test was conducted to assess the naturalness of spoken sentences in which either a vowel or a long vowel of the original speaker was replaced by that of another. Correlation analysis between the evaluation score and the spectral feature distance was conducted to select the spectral features that were expected to be effective in measuring the voice quality and to identify the appropriate speech segment of another speaker. The mel-frequency cepstrum coefficient (MFCC) and the spectral center of gravity (COG) in the low-, middle-, and high-frequency regions were selected. A perceptual paired comparison test was carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the spectral features. The results showed that the MFCC was effective for spectra across a wide range of frequency regions, the COG was effective in the low- and high-frequency regions, and the effective spectral features differed among the original speakers.

This paper proposes a direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation method of multiple speech sources from a stereophonic mixture in an underdetermined case where the number of sources exceeds the number of sensors. The method relies on the sparseness of speech signals in time-frequency (T-F) domain representation which means multiple independent speakers have a small overlap. At first, a selection of T-F cells bearing reliable spatial information is proposed by an introduced reliability index which is defined by the estimated interaural phase difference at each T-F cell. Then, a statistical error propagation model between the phase difference at T-F cell and its consequent DOA is introduced. By employing this model and the sparseness in T-F domain the DOA estimation problem is altered to obtaining local peaks of probability density function of DOA. Finally the kernel density estimator approach based on the proposed statistical model is applied. The performance of the proposed method is assessed by conducted experiments. Our method outperforms others both in accuracy for real observed data and in robustness for simulation with additional diffused noise.

No nontrivial optimal sets of frequency-hopping sequences (FHSs) of period 2(2n-1) for a positive integer n ≥ 2 have been found so far, when their frequency set sizes are less than their periods. In this paper, systematic doubling methods to construct new FHS sets are presented under the constraint that the set of frequencies has size less than or equal to 2n. First, optimal FHS sets with respect to the Peng-Fan bound are constructed when frequency set size is either 2n-1 or 2n. And then, near-optimal FHS sets with frequency set size 2n-1 are designed by applying the Chinese Remainder Theorem to Sidel'nikov sequences, whose FHSs are optimal with respect to the Lempel-Greenberger bound. Finally, a general construction is given for near-optimal FHS sets whose frequency set size is less than 2n-1. Our constructions give new parameters not covered in the literature, which are summarized in Table1.

A new approach for encoding one class of quasi-cyclic low-density parity-check (QC-LDPC) codes is proposed. The proposed encoding method is applicable to parity-check matrices having dual-diagonal parity structure with single column of weight three in the parity generation region. Instead of finding the parity bits directly, the proposed method finds parity bits through vector correction. While the proposed LDPC encoding scheme is readily applicable to matrices defined in the IEEE physical layer standards, the computational complexity of the post processing operation for extraction of correction vector requires less effort than solving the linear equations involved with finding the parity bit as proposed by Myung et al.

In this paper we provide a closed-form expression to evaluate the exact error probabilities of arbitrary 2-D modulation OFDM systems with CFO, and analyze the effect of CFO on error performance.

We present a carrier and sampling frequency offset estimation and compensation scheme for a multi-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultra-wideband (UWB) modem. We first perform initial carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimation and compensation during the preamble period, and then conduct the estimation and compensation of the residual CFO and sampling frequency offset (SFO) during the payload period. The proposed design scheme reduces the logic gate count of the frequency offset compensation block by about 10%, while it gives almost the same performance at the packet error rate (PER) of 10-4 in the CM1 channel. The frequency offset estimation and compensation block is implemented using 90 nm CMOS technology and tested.

Large-scale adoption of electronic healthcare applications requires semantic interoperability. The new proposals propose an advanced (multi-level) DBMS architecture for repository services for health records of patients. These also require query interfaces at multiple levels and at the level of semi-skilled users. In this regard, a high-level user interface for querying the new form of standardized Electronic Health Records system has been examined in this study. It proposes a step-by-step graphical query interface to allow semi-skilled users to write queries. Its aim is to decrease user effort and communication ambiguities, and increase user friendliness.

This work examines energy trajectory and voice quality measurements, in addition to conventional formant and duration properties, to classify tense and lax vowels in English. Tense and lax vowels are produced with differing articulatory configurations which can be identified by measuring acoustic cues such as energy peak location, energy convexity, open quotient and spectral tilt. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) is conducted, and dialect effects are observed. An overall 85.2% classification rate is obtained using the proposed features on the TIMIT database, resulting in improvement over using only conventional acoustic features. Adding the proposed features to widely used cepstral features also results in improved classification.

Recent developments of electronic devices containing Josephson junctions (JJ) with high-Tc superconductors (HTS) are reported. In particular, the fabrication process and the properties of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with a multilayer structure and ramp-edge-type JJs are described. The JJs were fabricated by recrystallization of an artificially deposited Cu-poor precursory layer. The formation mechanism of the junction barrier is discussed. We have fabricated various types of gradiometers and magnetometers. They have been actually utilized for several application systems, such as a non-destructive evaluation (NDE) system for deep-lying defects in a metallic plate and a reel-to-reel testing system for striated HTS-coated conductors.

In this paper, we investigate two improved turbo receivers for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) uplink in the presence of transmitter (Tx) in-phase and quadrature-phase imbalance (IQI) with parameters known at eNodeB. For multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems, we derive a optimal joint linear minimum mean square error (MMSE) turbo multiuser detector (MUD) based on the mirror symmetry clusters. For the single use SC-FDMA system with Tx IQI, we derive an optimal widely linear MMSE (WLMMSE) turbo equalizer. Both receivers are implemented in the discrete frequency domain and only slightly increase the computational complexity compared to the conventional turbo receivers. Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed receivers significantly outperform the conventional turbo receivers. The simulation results are then confirmed by the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart analysis.

We have proposed a novel call admission control (CAC) for maximizing total user satisfaction in a heterogeneous traffic network and showed the effectiveness of our CAC by using an optimal threshold from numerical analysis [1]. In our previous CAC, when a new broadband flow arrives and the total accommodated bandwidth is more than or equal to the threshold, the arriving new broadband flow is rejected. In actual networks, however, users may agree to wait for a certain period until the broadband flow, such as video, begins to play. In this paper, when total accommodated bandwidth is more than or equal to the threshold, arriving broadband flows wait instead of being rejected. As a result, we can greatly improve total user satisfaction.

We propose a next-generation service-transport separated network architecture that uses packet technology. The transport network is responsible for the high speed and reliable bit transfer, and the service network is responsible for many types of network services. This separation makes it possible for the next-generation network to achieve both rapid bandwidth spreading and the speedy installation of new services. We also propose a next-generation transport network using the multi-protocol label switching transport profile (MPLS-TP) and optical networking technologies.

Quasi-cyclic (QC) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have several appealing properties regarding decoding, storage requirements and encoding aspects. In this paper, we focus on the QC LDPC codes over GF(q) whose parity-check matrices have fixed column weight j = 2. By investigating two subgraphs in the Tanner graphs of the corresponding base matrices, we derive two upper bounds on the minimum Hamming distance for this class of codes. In addition, a method is proposed to construct QC LDPC codes over GF(q), which have good Hamming distance distributions. Simulations show that our designed codes have good performance.

In this paper, a study on discrete-time coined quantum walks on the line is presented. Clear mathematical foundations are still lacking for this quantum walk model. As a step toward this objective, the following question is being addressed: Given a graph, what is the probability that a quantum walk arrives at a given vertex after some number of steps? This is a very natural question, and for random walks it can be answered by several different combinatorial arguments. For quantum walks this is a highly non-trivial task. Furthermore, this was only achieved before for one specific coin operator (Hadamard operator) for walks on the line. Even considering only walks on lines, generalizing these computations to a general SU(2) coin operator is a complex task. The main contribution is a closed-form formula for the amplitudes of the state of the walk (which includes the question above) for a general symmetric SU(2) operator for walks on the line. To this end, a coin operator with parameters that alters the phase of the state of the walk is defined. Then, closed-form solutions are computed by means of Fourier analysis and asymptotic approximation methods. We also present some basic properties of the walk which can be deducted using weak convergence theorems for quantum walks. In particular, the support of the induced probability distribution of the walk is calculated. Then, it is shown how changing the parameters in the coin operator affects the resulting probability distribution.

Optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) is a promising technique for multimedia transmission in fiber-optic local-area networks (LANs). Variable-weight optical orthogonal codes (OOCs) can be used for OCDMA networks supporting multiple quality of services (QoS). Most constructions for optimal variable-weight OOCs have focused on the case where the number of distinct Hamming weights of all codewords is equal to two, and the codewords of weight 3 are normally included. In this letter, four explicit constructions of optimal (υ,{4,5,6},1,Q)-OOCs are presented, and more new optimal (υ,{4,5,6},1,Q)-OOCs are obtained via recursive constructions. These improve the existing results on optimal variable-weight OOCs with at least three distinct Hamming weights and minimum Hamming weight 4.
