  • Effectiveness of an Integrated CASE Tool for Productivity and Quality of Software Developments

    This is commonly thought that CASE tools reduce programming efforts and increase development productivity. However, no paper has provide quantitative data supporting the matter. This paper discusses productivity improvement through the use of an integrated CASE tool system named EAGLE (Effective Approach to Achieving High Level Software Productivity), as shown by various data collected in Hitachi from the 1980s to the 2000s. We have evaluated productivity by using three metrics, l) program generation rate using reusable program skeletons and components, 2) fault density at two test phase, and 3) learning curve for the education of inexperienced programmers. We will show that productivity has been improved by the various facilities of EAGLE.

  • Generating Test Sequences from Statecharts for Concurrent Program Testing

    This paper presents an approach to specification-based testing of concurrent programs with representative test sequences generated from Statecharts. Representative test sequences are a subset of all possible interleavings of concurrent events that define the behaviors of a concurrent program. Because a program's correctness may be determined by checking whether a program implemented all behaviors in its specification or not, the program can be regarded as being correct if it can supply an alternative execution that has the same effects as the program's behavior with each representative test sequence. Based on this observation, we employ each representative test sequence as a seed to generate an automaton that accepts its equivalent sequences to reveal the same behavior. In order to effectively test a concurrent program, the automaton such generated accepts all sequences equivalent to the representative test sequence and it is used to control test execution. This paper describes an automated process of generating automata from a Statecharts specification and shows how the proposed approach works on Statecharts specifications through some examples.

    This paper investigates the design curves of class E amplifier with nonlinear capacitance for any output Q and finite dc-feed inductance. The important results are; 1) the capacitance nonlinearity strongly affects the design parameters for low Q, 2) the value of dc-feed inductance is hardly affected by the capacitance nonlinearity, and 3) the input voltage is an important parameter to design class E amplifier with nonlinear capacitance. By carrying out PSpice simulations, we show that the simulated results agree with the desired ones quantitatively. It is expected that the design curves in this paper are useful guidelines for the design of class E amplifier with nonlinear capacitance.

  • An Active Noise Control System Based on Simultaneous Equations Method without Auxiliary Filters

    A simultaneous equations method is one of active noise control algorithms without estimating an error path. This algorithm requires identification of a transfer function from a reference microphone to an error microphone containing the effect of a noise control filter. It is achieved by system identification of an auxiliary filter. However, the introduction of the auxiliary filter requires more number of samples to obtain the noise control filter and brings a requirement of some undesirable assumption in the multiple channel case. In this paper, a new simultaneous equations method without the identification of the auxiliary filter is proposed. By storing a small number of input signals and error signals, we avoid this identification. Therefore, we can reduce the number of samples to obtain the noise control filters and can avoid the undesirable assumption. From simulation examples, it is verified that the merits of the ordinary method is also retained in the proposed method.

    This paper presents an even harmonic quadrature mixer (EH-QMIX) with a simple filter configuration and an integrated LTCC module including LNAs, band rejection filters (BRFs), and the proposed EH-QMIX for W-CDMA direct conversion receiver (DCR). Since the DCR has no spurious responses, a BRF instead of a high-Q band pass filter can be applicable for eliminating undesired signals and it can be built in the LTCC substrates easily. As LO frequency is half of RF frequency in the EH-QMIX, diplexer can be composed of simple filters and it can be also integrated in the substrates. As a result, the whole RF circuits of the EH-DCR using a proposed EH-QMIX are integrated in the LTCC module and miniaturization of the receiver is achieved. Moreover, in order to suppress the degradation of the amplitude and the phase imbalances in the quadrature mixer caused by interferences of signals, RF characteristics of the circuits in the mixer such as reflection coefficients, isolations are discussed. A developed LTCC module shows good performances for W-CDMA direct conversion receiver.

    In this paper, the magnetic field properties and the dosimetry at intermediate frequency (21 kHz) for an induction heater are investigated with the coil model, which is prescribed as substitute source model in the European standard EN50366 (CENELEC). The accuracy of the magnetic field vectors and the values of the induced current density, which are achieved with the coil model, are compared with the results of a realistic model of the induction heater obtained from the equivalent source model. It is shown that the coil model coincides well for the magnitude of the magnetic field strength around the induction heater. On the other hand, the dominant field vector of the coil model differs significantly from the real induction heater, which leads to induced current densities in the body model which are three time larger. Owing to these results, the applicability of the coil model prescribed in the EN50366 is confirmed for the induction heater.

    This letter evaluates the performance of an uplink multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) system when the frequency offsets of all users are random variables and the frequency offset for the desired user is compensated. The analysis confirms that performance degradation due to frequency offset is negligible if the estimation error of normalized frequency offset for the desired user is less than 10-1.

    This letter presents robustness bounds (RBs) for receding horizon controls (RHCs) of uncertain systems. The proposed RBs are obtained easily by solving convex problems represented by linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). We show, by numerical examples, that the RHCs can guarantee robust stabilization for a larger class of uncertain systems than conventional linear quadratic regulators (LQRs).

    A per-user AGC technique is proposed to combat the signal level variation of an individual user in a DS-CDMA receiver. A simple signal model for a Rake receiver is derived, and the potential cause of the signal variation in the Rake receiver output is discussed. The adaptive scheme is also compared with a conventional fixed quantization scheme in simulations.

    We propose a definitional question answering system that extracts phrases using syntactic patterns which are easily constructed manually and can reduce the coverage problem. Experimental results show that our phrase extraction system outperforms a sentence extraction system, especially for selecting concise answers, in terms of recall and precision, and indicate that the proper text unit of answer candidates and the final answer has a significant effect on the system performance.

    A novel frequency domain training sequence and the corresponding carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator are proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over frequency-selective fading channels. The proposed frequency domain training sequence comprises two types of pilot tones, namely distinctively spaced pilot tones with high energies and uniformly spaced ones with low energies. Based on the distinctively spaced pilot tones, integer CFO estimation is accomplished. After the subcarriers occupied by the distinctively spaced pilot tones and their adjacent subcarriers are nulled for the sake of interference cancellation, fractional CFO estimation is executed according to the uniformly spaced pilot tones. By exploiting a predefined lookup table making the best of the structure of the distinctively spaced pilot tones, computational complexity of the proposed CFO estimator can be decreased considerably. With the aid of the uniformly spaced pilot tones generated from Chu sequence with cyclically orthogonal property, the ability of the proposed estimator to combat multipath effect is enhanced to a great extent. Simulation results illustrate the good performance of the proposed CFO estimator.

    In this letter, we propose a cdma2000 based MC-CDMA scheme which inherits the same architecture and bandwidth of forward link packet data channel of cdma2000 1x EV-DV. The system utilizes no cyclic prefix, and it uses the bandwidth efficient iterative technique [6] to recover cyclicity of OFDM symbol of the MC-CDMA system to achieve backward compatibility with 1x EV-DV system. We report that the link-level performance of our proposed system is significantly better than previous equalizer-based scheme [7] in frequency selective fading channels.

    We developed a CMOS watchdog sensor that simulates the changes in quality of perishables such as farm and marine products. The sensor can imitate a chemical reaction that causes the changes in the quality of perishables, with a wide range of activation energy from 0.1 eV to 0.7 eV. Attached to perishable goods, the sensor simulates the deterioration of the goods caused by surrounding temperatures. By reading the output of the sensor, consumers can determine whether the goods are fresh or not. This sensor consists of subthreshold CMOS circuits with a low-power consumption of 5 µW or less.

    The speech noise reduction system based on the frequency domain adaptive line enhancer using a windowed modified DFT (MDFT) pair is presented. The adaptive line enhancer (ALE) is effective for extracting sinusoidal signals blurred by a broadband noise. In addition, it utilizes only one microphone. Therefore, it is suitable for the realization of speech noise reduction in portable electronic devices. In the ALE, an input signal is generated by delaying a desired signal using the decorrelation parameter, which makes the noise in the input signal decorrelated with that in the desired one. In the present paper, we propose to set decorrelation parameters in the frequency domain and adjust them to optimal values according to the relationship between speech and noise. Such frequency domain decorrelation parameters enable the reduction of the computational complexity of the proposed system. Also, we introduce the window function into MDFT for suppressing spectral leakage. The performance of the proposed noise reduction system is examined through computer simulations.

    This paper proposes a robust fuzzy integral controller for output regulating a class of affine nonlinear systems subject to a bias reference to the origin. First, a common biased fuzzy model is introduced for a class of continuous/discrete-time affine nonlinear systems, such as dc-dc converters, robotic systems. Then, combining an integrator and parallel distributed compensators, the fuzzy integral regulator achieves an asymptotic regulation. Moreover, when considering disturbances or unstructured certainties, a virtual reference model is presented and provides a robust gain design via LMI techniques. In this case, H∞ performances is guaranteed. Note that the information regarding the operational point and bias terms are not required during the controller implementation. Thus, the controller can be applied to a multi-task regulation. Finally, three numerical simulations show the expected results.

    For various applications in image, communications and signal processing, two-dimensional (2-D) generalized orthogonal (GO) sequences, that is, 2-D sequences with zero correlation zone (ZCZ) and 2-D complementary orthogonal (CO) sequences with ZCZ, are widely investigated. New lower bounds for 2-D GO sequences, based on matrix theory on rank, are derived and presented, some examples that attain these lower bounds are given. As a direct application to our results, upper bound on family size of 2-D mutually complementary orthogonal (MCO) codes defined by Luke [9] is proposed.

    A simple low power low phase noise LC QVCO (Quadrature Voltage Controlled Oscillator) topology is proposed. The topology minimizes phase noise by eliminating the contributions from the tail current source and coupling transistors. With no more than 3.36 mW power consumption from a 1.2 V power supply, the VCO achieves -124 dBc/Hz phase noise performance at 1 MHz offset from the 2.85 GHz carrier frequency.

    In this letter, we propose a new detection method for an OFDM signal distorted by IQ imbalance, and a pilot pattern to estimate the channel associated with IQ imbalance. It is shown by computer simulation that the proposed method can achieve robust detection even when severe IQ imbalance exists in OFDM systems with an input of higher-order constellation.

    In closed-loop multiple-input and multiple-output space-division multiplexing (MIMO-SDM) systems, allocating power among multiple transmit data streams improves the channel capacity. However, the optimum power allocation values are not always available in closed-form. For instance, when we use transmission and reception schemes that do not transfer the MIMO channel into parallel orthogonal channels (e.g., eigen-mode SDM), the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) of each data stream at the output of the receiver is not proportional to its corresponding transmit power. This feature makes it difficult to obtain the optimal closed-form power allocation value for each data stream. Thus, in this paper, we propose an iterative power allocation scheme for MIMO-SDM systems where the SINR is not proportional to the transmit power. Furthermore, we incorporate a transmit antenna selection scheme into the proposed power allocation scheme in order to attain further capacity enhancement. Computer simulation results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed power allocation schemes.

    In this letter, we investigate ESPRIT-based approaches for blind frequency offset estimation on MC-CDMA downlink. By analyzing the signal subspace structures of the MC-CDMA signals, the natures of the spreading codes and the number of users determine the feasibility of the ESPRIT-based approaches for the blind estimation task.
