Pulse-shaping OFDM is well-known that it performs well in a mobile environment compared with conventional OFDM. However, in a highly mobile environment intersymbol and intercarrier interferences (ISI/ICIs) increase and can no longer be neglected. These ISI/ICIs deteriorate the performance of the systems. Proper channel equalization is needed for further improvement of the systems. In this paper, a more general case, namely Biorthogonal Frequency Division System based on Offset QAM (BFDM/OQAM) is considered. We propose a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transversal filter to equalize the time-frequency dispersive channel. Tap weights are calculated using the zero-forcing (ZF) algorithm. We also propose maximum-likelihood channel estimator and its low-complexity version. The proposed system can significantly improve the performance of BFDM/OQAM systems in the highly mobile environment.

Recently there are various requirements for LSI testing, such as test compaction, test compression, low power dissipation or increase of defect coverage. If test sequences contain lots of don't cares (Xs), then their flexibility can be used to meet the above requirements. In this paper, we propose methods for finding as many Xs as possible in test sequences for sequential circuits. Given a fully specified test sequence generated by a sequential ATPG, the proposed methods produce a test sequence containing Xs without losing stuck-at fault coverage of the original test sequence. The methods apply an approach based on fault simulation, and they introduce some heuristics for reducing the simulation effort. Experimental results for ISCAS'89 benchmark circuits show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The Video Quality Experts Group (VQEG) is preparing a programme of subjective multimedia quality tests. The results from these tests will be used to evaluate the performance of competing objective multimedia quality metrics. The reliability of the subjective test data is of great importance for VQEG's task. This paper provides an overview of VQEG's multimedia ad-hoc group. The work of this group will require subjective tests to be performed by laboratories located in Europe, Asia and North America. For VQEG's multimedia work to be successful, the subjective assessment methodology must be precisely defined and produce reliable and repeatable subjective quality data. Although international standards covering multimedia quality assessment methods are in force, there remains some uncertainty regarding the most effective approach to assessing the subjective quality of multimedia. A review of existing methods is provided. Two experiments are presented investigating the suitability of alternative subjective assessment methods (single-stimulus ACR and SAMVIQ). The results of these experiments are discussed within the context of the VQEG multimedia testing programme.

This paper describes 3-GHz and 7-GHz tunable-inductance LC-tank voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) implemented in 0.18-µm CMOS technology. Unlike the traditional tuning method by a varactor, a tunable inductor is employed in the VCO by using a transformer to compensate for the energy loss. The VCO facilitates the tuning frequency and low noise of the output signals, together with a variable inductor which satisfies both criteria. The 3-GHz VCO using a symmetry transformer provides the tuning range of 2.85 to 3.12 GHz at 1-V supply. The power consumption is 4.8 mW while the measured phase noise is -126 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset from a 2.85-GHz carrier. A small-area stacked transformer is employed in the 7-GHz VCO, which achieves a tuning range of 6.59 to 7.02 GHz and measured phase noise of -114 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset from a 6.59-GHz carrier while consuming 9 mW from a 1.2-V supply.

We have developed a code-division-multiplexing (CDM) transmission scheme for future road-vehicle communication systems, which uses cyclic shifted-and-extended (CSE) codes generated from a basic code with superior auto-correlation characteristics. This paper proposes to use a Quasi-Orthogonal (QO) sequence as the basic code. Its auto-correlation values are zero except at zero and middle shifts. When the CDM transmission is performed by the CSE codes based on the QO sequence, a desired correlation value is, at a receiver, interfered by the auto-correlation value at middle shift. Therefore, an elimination technique for the interfered correlation value is proposed and realizes zero cross-correlation characteristics within the cyclical shift interval. The new CDM transmission scheme based on the proposed scheme is evaluated by computer simulations in terms of the bit-error-rate performance.

An enhanced Ultra Wideband (UWB) signaling scheme that employs PSWF (Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions)-based orthogonal chip pulses and ternary complementary code sets is proposed for Direct-Sequence (DS) UWB systems. Every information bit of each user is modulated and transmitted over a set of parallel sequences of PSWF-based orthogonal chip pulses and are further assigned to a ternary complementary code set with additional zero padding if necessary. Moreover, the ternary complementary code sets are generated to be mutually orthogonal and assigned to any pair of multiple users. Hence, the mitigation of multipath interference as well as multiple user interference (MUI) can be expected. Furthermore, the ternary code length can be greatly shortened by taking advantage of pulse and code orthogonality. Thus, the proposed transmission scheme is especially suitable for high data rate DS-UWB systems that offer very high flexibility.

In this paper, we propose a high speed Preamble Searcher suitable for the RACH (Random Access Channel) structure in WCDMA reverse link receivers. Unlike IS-95, WCDMA system uses the AISMA (Acquisition Indication Sense Multiple Access) scheme. Because of the time limit between RACH preamble transmission and AI (Acquisition Indicators), and the restriction on the number of RACH signatures assigned to RACH preamble, fast acquisition is required for efficient operation. The Preamble Searcher proposed in this paper is designed for 2-antenna systems; it adopts the FHT (Fast Hadamard Transform) algorithm that has the radix-2 16 point FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) structure. The acquisition speed using FHT is 32 times faster than the conventional method that correlates each signature. Based on this fast acquisition scheme, we improved the acquisition performance by calculating correlation up to 4096 chips of the total preamble length.

An analytic approach for the generation of non-periodic and periodic complementary sequences is advanced for lengths that are powers of two. The periodic complementary sequences can be obtained using symmetric or anti-symmetric extensions. The properties of their autocorrelation functions are studied. The non-periodic complementary sequences are the intersection between anti-symmetric and symmetric periodic sequences. These non-periodic and periodic complementary sequences are identified to be special cases of non-periodic and periodic (or cyclic) orthogonal wavelet transforms. This relationship leads to the novel approach.

Petri nets with inhibitor arcs are referred to as inhibitor-arc Petri nets. It is shown that modeling capability of inhibitor-arc Petri nets is equivalent to that of Turing machines. The subject of this paper is the legal firing sequence problem (INLFS) for inhibitor-arc Petri nets: given an inhibitor-arc Petri net IN, an initial marking M0 and a firing count vector X, find a firing sequence δ such that its firing starts from M0 and each transition t appears in δ exactly X(t) times as prescribed by X. The paper is the first step of research for time complexity analysis and designing algorithms of INLFS, one of the most fundamental problems for inhibitor-arc Petri nets having more modeling capability than ordinary Peri nets. The recognition version of INLFS, denoted as RINLFS, means a decision problem, asking a "yes" or "no" answer on the existence of a solution δ to INLFS. The main results are the following (1) and (2). (1) Proving (1-1) and (1-2) when the underlying Petri net of IN is an unweighted state machine: (1-1) INLFS can be solved in pseudo-polynomial (O(|X|)) time for IN of non-adjacent type having only one special place called a rivet; (1-2) RINLFS is NP-hard for IN with at least three rivets; (2) Proving that RINLFS for IN whose underlying Petri net is unweighted and forward conflict-free is NP-hard. Heuristic algorithms for solving INLFS are going to be proposed in separate papers.

Several active queue management schemes have been proposed to provide fairness among flows. In particular, BLACK has the best performance among them with respect to simplicity and fairness. However, it can provoke the UDP throughput to fluctuate and worsen the fairness. In this paper, we propose a new active queue management scheme to modify BLACK for better performance. Simulation results illustrate that the performance of our proposal is better than that of BLACK in terms of the fairness and the smooth UDP throughput.

Diversity transmission using space-time block coding (STBC) shows a degraded performance in frequency selective fading (FSF) channel. In this paper, assuming the CSI is unknown at both transmitter and receiver while a pilot signal is available during the training period, we propose a MIMO transmission scheme using STBC by adopting subband adaptive array (SBAA) processing. The receive signal is converted into the frequency-domain and adaptive processing is done at each subband. A novel construction of SBAA is introduced to process received signal based on STBC. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme has a better performance compare to conventional STBC, and has a better performance and less computational load compare to STBC-TDLAA.

In this letter, a blind frequency offset estimation algorithm is proposed for OFDM systems. The proposed method exploits the intrinsic phase shift between neighboring samples in a single OFDM symbol, incurred by a frequency offset. The proposed algorithm minimizes a novel cost function, which is the squared error of the candidate frequency offset compensated signals from two different observation windows. Also, the solution of the proposed algorithm is given by an explicit equation, which does not require any iterative calculation. It is shown that the performance of the proposed method is better than those of the conventional methods, especially in the presence of multipath channels. This is due to the fact that the proposed method is insensitive to inter-symbol interference (ISI).

This paper outlines the method of constructing single-electron logic circuits based on the binary decision diagram (BDD), a graphical representation of digital functions. The circuit consists of many unit devices, BDD devices, cascaded to build the tree of a BDD graph. Each BDD device corresponds to a node of the BDD graph and operates as a two-way switch for the transport of a single electron. Any combinatorial logic can be implemented using BDD circuits. Several subsystems for a single-electron processor have been constructed using semiconductor nano-process technology.

This paper proposes a new codec design method based on JPEG for face images and presents its application to face recognition. Quantization table is designed using the R-D optimization for the Yale face database. In order to use in the embedded systems, fast codec design is also considered. The proposed codec achieves better compression rates than JPEG codec for face images. In face recognition experiments using the linear discriminant analysis (LDA), the proposed codec shows better performance than JPEG codec.

A family of sequences with zero correlation zone, which is shortly called a ZCZ set, can provide CDMA system without co-channel interference nor influence of multipath. This paper presents two types of ZCZ sets of non-binary sequence pairs, which achieve the upper bound of family size for length and zero correlation zone. One, which is produced by use of a perfect complementary pair and an orthogonal code, can change zero correlation zone, while the upper bound is kept. The other, which is generated by use of a newly defined orthogonal pair and an orthogonal code, can offer such CDMA system as a binary ZCZ set seems to be used.

    3026-3031

In this paper, the performance of narrow band interference (NBI) rejection scheme for direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) is analyzed. A single-tapped complex FIR filter is used for filtering a chip code to suppress NBI. In this system, the spectrum of transmitted signal has a null at an arbitrary frequency. By choosing filter coefficients, we place this null at NBI center frequency to mitigate the effect of NBI. The performance of this scheme is theoretically analyzed and validated by simulation. We also compare the effectiveness against BPSK interference between the chip code filtering and received signal filtering. The results indicate the chip code filtering is effective against single-tone and BPSK interference, and gains better performance than the received signal filtering at certain level of SNR.

Currently, multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) is considered to be one of the modulation schemes of UWB and is being actively investigated. It is necessary to provide low-cost receivers for consumers to receive wide support for the MB-OFDM system. Such receivers can be achieved by utilizing direct-conversion architecture. Direct-conversion architecture suffers from IQ imbalance. IQ imbalance causes intercarrier interference (ICI) in the demodulated signals. In this paper, a new scheme of IQ imbalance compensation using transmit diversity is proposed. This scheme enables the system to achieve frequency diversity and simultaneously compensates for the influence of IQ imbalance. It is shown that the performance of the proposed scheme is better than that of the conventional IQ imbalance compensation scheme.

  • Joint Estimation of Frequency Offset and Channel Frequency Response Using EM Algorithm for OFDM Systems

    3123-3130

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems are very sensitive to the frequency offset of the local oscillator at the receiver while the symbol timing offset can be absorbed in the guard interval. For the same reason, estimation of the frequency characteristics, needed for OFDM to be adapted to the frequency selective fading, can only be carried out conventionally after the frequency offset has been compensated. And accurate estimation of large frequency offset certainly requires high precision estimate of the frequency characteristics. In this paper, we propose a new joint estimation method of the frequency offset and the channel frequency response using an Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm for OFDM systems. The proposed algorithm overcomes the limitation of the thus far proposed algorithm. By computer simulations, we show the proposed algorithm provides estimation accuracy close to its lower bound in a wide range of the frequency offset.

Active Queue Management (AQM) based on nonlinear difference equations is proposed to solve the end-to-end TCP network congestion problem. The proposed AQM scheme can guarantee the stability of the multiple bottleneck network by nonlinear control of dropping probability of the routers by imposing some restrictions on the AQM parameter. Nonlinear control often relies on some heuristics and network traffic controllers that appear to be highly correlated with the multiple bottleneck network status. Based on the proposed nonlinear difference equations for TCP flows control across the network, this paper reveals the reasons of congestion of multiple bottleneck AQM, and provides a theorem for avoiding network congestion. Moreover, we give simulations to verify the results for nonlinear control of the multiple bottleneck network congestion.
