  • Analysis of Z-Cut Quartz Etalon with Weight for Wavelength Locker

    This paper presents an analysis of the cavity length modulation of a Z-cut quartz etalon equipped with a weight for Laser Diode (LD) wavelength lockers. The electro-optic effect, piezoelectric effect and photo-elastic effect are considered, and the mechanical movement of the etalon with a weight is analyzed by using a mechanical circuit. Approximate equations that clearly explain the mechanical force, mechanical resonance frequency, and Q factor of the mechanical resonance are obtained. The mechanism for improving the modulation efficiency by placing a weight is clarified. We also compare the analysis with experimental results, and show that most of the experimental values are in accord with the calculated values.

  • A Framework of Time, Place, Purpose and Personal Profile Based Recommendation Service for Mobile Environment

    Nowadays more people have started using their mobile phone to access information they need from anywhere at anytime. In advanced mobile technology, Location Service allows users to quickly pinpoint their location as well as makes a recommendation to fascinating events. However, users desire more appropriate recommendation services. In other words, the message service should push a message at a proper place in time. In consequence, customers obtain a higher level of satisfaction. In this paper, we propose a framework of time, place, purpose and personal profile based recommendation service. We illustrate scenarios in "push", "pull" and "don't disturb" services, where our DB queries can recommend the relevant message to users. The three factors: time, place and purpose are mutually dependent and the basic rules to analyze the essential data are summarized. We also create algorithms for DB query. We are filtering messages by one important factor: personal profile such as user's preference and degree of preference. Furthermore, we discuss an implementation of the prototype system, including results of experimental evaluation.

    In this paper, we describe a development of a Bluetooth Access Point for the WAN connection of home network devices. Especially, users can access the PSTN at home instead of expensive CDMA network through the AP, using the 'one-phone,' which is the Bluetooth enabled cellular phone. The one-phone service becomes a convergence of wired and wireless communication through the AP.

    L-convex functions are nonlinear discrete functions on integer points that are computationally tractable in optimization. In this paper, a discrete Hessian matrix and a local quadratic expansion are defined for L-convex functions. We characterize L-convex functions in terms of the discrete Hessian matrix and the local quadratic expansion.

    In this paper, we propose a new reinforcement learning scheme called CHQ that could efficiently acquire appropriate policies under partially observable Markov decision processes (POMDP) involving probabilistic state transitions, that frequently occurs in multi-agent systems in which each agent independently takes a probabilistic action based on a partial observation of the underlying environment. A key idea of CHQ is to extend the HQ-learning proposed by Wiering et al. in such a way that it could learn the activation order of the MDP subtasks as well as an appropriate policy under each MDP subtask. The goodness of the proposed scheme is experimentally evaluated. The result of experiments implies that it can acquire a deterministic policy with a sufficiently high success rate, even if the given task is POMDP with probabilistic state transitions.

    We proposed a novel structure that improved the linear characteristics of electroabsorption modulator (EAM) with composite quantum-wells as an absorption core layer. We fabricated three types of EAM's whose active cores were 8 nm thick, 12 nm thick and a composite core with 8 nm thick and 12 nm thick quantum-well (QW), respectively. The transfer functions of EAM's were investigated and their third-order inter-modulation distortion (IMD3) was obtained by calculation. The spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) was measured and compared with three types of QW. The linearity of the device with composite quantum-well showed a large enhancement in SFDR by 9.3 dBHz2/3 in TE mode and 7.0 dBHz2/3 in TM mode compared with the conventional EAM.

    By using multiple transmit antennas, wireless systems have a large capacity in time-varying multipath fading channels. Space-time block code (STBC), space-frequency block code (SFBC), and space-time-frequency (STF) block code are well-known techniques in transmitter diversity schemes. While the SFBC (or the STF block coded) system gives full diversity at frequency-nonselective channels, it breaks down when used in a frequency-selective environment. This is because the SFBC (or the STF block code) scheme disregards frequency selectivity of the channel by assuming that channel frequency responses (CFRs) at adjacent subcarriers are the same. In this paper, we propose efficient channel estimation and symbol decoding methods, which consider the difference between CFRs at the adjacent subcarriers of the SFBC (or the STF block coded) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system in multipath fading channels. The proposed method gives initial channel information by designing a simple training symbol, and the CFRs at all the subcarriers and the differences between the CFRs are easily calculated by using an interpolation method or a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) operation.

  • Improved Lower Bounds for Competitive Ratio of Multi-Queue Switches in QoS Networks

    The recent burst growth of the Internet use overloads networking systems and degrades the quality of communications, e.g., bandwidth loss, packet drops, delay of responses, etc. To overcome such degradation of the communication quality, the notion of Quality of Service (QoS) has received attention in practice. In general, QoS switches have several queues and each queue has several slots to store arriving packets. Since network traffic changes frequently, QoS switches need to control arriving packets to maximize the total priorities of transmitted packets, where the priorities are given by nonnegative values and correspond to the quality of service required for each packet. In this paper, we derive lower bounds for the competitive ratio of deterministic multi-queue nonpreemptive QoS problem of priorities 1 and α 1: 1 + /α ln if α α*; 1/(1 - e-τ0) if 1 α < α*, where α* 1.657 and τ0 is a root of the equality that e-τ(1/α + τ)=1 - e-τ. As an immediate result, this shows a lower bound 1.466 for the competitive ratio of deterministic multi-queue nonpreemptive QoS problem of single priority, which slightly improves the best known lower bound 1.366.

    A GaInAs/InP multiple quantum well (MQW)-based wavelength demultiplexer composed of a waveguide array in which the refractive index varies across the array yielded successful results of wavelength demultiplexing and optical deflection. Since optical path length differences between waveguides in the array are achieved through refractive-index differences controlled by the SiO2 mask design in selective metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE), a straight waveguide grating can be formed with reduced optical propagation losses. A straight waveguide array device with a 1.4% refractive-index difference was fabricated. The fabrication of a preliminary wavelength demultiplexer was also achieved, for which a wavelength separation with an approximately 25 nm spacing and free spectral range (FSR) of approximately 100 nm were obtained. Moreover, an optical deflector was investigated and primitive deflection was achieved at 1460 and 1490 nm incident wavelengths.

    An essential issue in designing, operating and managing a modern network is to assure end-to-end QoS from users perspective, and in the meantime to optimize a certain average performance objective from the systems perspective. So in the first part of this paper, we address the above issue by using the rerouting approach, where the objective is to minimize the average cross-network packet delay in virtual circuit networks with the consideration of an end-to-end delay constraint (DCR) for each O-D pair. The problem is formulated as a multicommodity network flow problem with integer routing decision variables, where additional end-to-end delay constraints are considered. As the traffic demands increases over time, the rerouting approach may not be applicable, which results in the necessity of capacity augmentation. Henceforth, the second part of this paper is to jointly consider the link capacity assignment and the routing problem (JCR) at the same time where the objective is to minimize the total link installation cost with considering the average and end-to-end delay constraints. Unlike previous research tackling this problem with a two-phase approach, we propose an integrated approach to considering the routing and capacity assignment at the same time. The difficulties of DCR and JCR result from the integrality nature and particularly the nonconvexity property associated with the end-to-end delay constraints. We propose novel Lagrangean relaxation based algorithms to solve the DCR and the JCR problems. Through computational experiments, we show that the proposed algorithms calculate near-optimal solutions for the DCR problem and outperform previous two-phase approach for the JCR problem under all tested cases.

  • On the Window Selection for Three FFT-Based High-Accuracy Frequency Estimation Methods

    Recent studies show that several FFT-based high-accuracy frequency estimation methods achieve very good performance. In this letter, we select three methods, which are the zero-padding, weighted multipoint interpolated DFT, and phase difference approximation respectively, and discuss the window selection for each method. Experiments show that the window selection primarily depends on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). As a result, the optimal window selection for each method and, reversely, the optimal selection of the estimation method for a specific window are discussed as a function of SNR. Consideration on the computational load and the resolution problem is also briefly discussed.

    Among recent trends in Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning in the Internet is the Differentiated Services Architecture, termed DiffServ. The successful deployment of Diffserv to provide a premium QoS guarantees to network traffic requires an effective admission control mechanism, which needs to be scalable and relatively simple to implement. In this paper we present a QoS network framework with novel and effective measurement-based resource management and admission control mechanisms. The mechanism is based on the characteristics of measured arrival and departure traffic. Those characteristics are captured via a passive monitoring. We implement the mechanism at the edge routers of a DiffServ Domain. The admission control mechanism is only executed at the edge routers and doesn't require any signaling between inner routers. The mechanism does not depend on the underlying network topology or any specifications of the cross traffic present in the domain. Therefore the mechanism is scalable. In addition, the proposed approach does not require any traffic policing mechanism at the entrance of the network. This approach can provide the statistical QoS guarantees to a variety of service classes within a DiffServ domain. We show that the proposed framework can provide a high degree of network resource sharing among multiple traffic classes while satisfying their QoS requirements. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, we perform a set of simulations on a number of bursty video traffic sources.

  • Wireless Quality Assessment Using RLP NAK Rate in CDMA2000 1X Networks

    The frequent and time-independent packet loss due to signal noise in the wireless network has been a major obstacle in providing a persistent end-to-end bandwidth in the integrated environment of wired and wireless networks. One approach to cope with this is to develop an efficient transport mechanism which appropriately adapts to the dynamics of the wireless part of the network so that the end-to-end throughput is maximised. The success of new transport mechanisms depends on the quality of information obtained, in particular, from the wireless network. This paper presents a novel mechanism to assess accurately the transmission quality of the wireless part of the integrated CDMA2000 1X networks using the NAK rate obtained from the underlying RLP protocol stack. The experiment results show that the proposed mechanism correctly measures the wireless transmission quality of the CDMA2000 1X network.

  • A New Inductance Extraction Technique of On-Wafer Spiral Inductor Based on Analytical Interconnect Formula

    A new inductance extraction technique of spiral inductor from measurement fixture is presented. We propose a scalable expression of parasitic inductance for interconnects, and design consideration of test structure accommodating spiral inductor. The simple expression includes mutual inductance between the interconnects with high accuracy. The formula matches a commercial field solver inductance values within 1.4%. The layout of the test structure to reduce magnetic coupling between the spiral and the interconnects allows us to extract the intrinsic inductance of spiral more accurately. The proposed technique requires neither special fixture used for measurement-based method nor skilled worker for precise extraction with the analytical technique used.

  • High-Temperature and High-Speed Performances of InGaAlAs-MQW DFB Lasers for 10-Gb/s Datacom Applications

    A 1.3-µm InGaAlAs-MQW RWG DFB laser with low-resistance notch-free grating during operations of up to 12.5 Gb/s at 115 was fully investigated. This performance was achieved by combining the high differential gain of the InGaAlAs MQW active layer, high characteristic temperature of RWG structures, and low-resistance notch-free grating. In addition, transmission over 30-km was achieved with the laser running at up to 115. These results confirm the suitability of this type of laser for use as a cost-effective light source in 10-Gb/s datacom applications.

    The new design with minimum loop inductance suitable for the measurements at high frequencies with substrate bias is described. These test structures allow characterizing 4-terminal MOSFETs with a standard two-port Network Analyzer. The high-frequency behavior of bulk effect in MOSFETs is studied at different bias conditions for a 0.18 µm RF CMOS technology. The BSIM3 extension RF MOSFET modeling with bulk effect is verified and analyzed from two-port Y-parameter results. The result of RF NMOSFET shows that a good accuracy of the 4-terminal RF MOSFET modeling is achieved.

    This paper proposes a novel frequency-domain channel estimator which mitigates the effects of ICI by jointly finding the frequency offset and channel frequency response (CFR). A binary search algorithm is used to find the present frequency offset and CFR jointly. The variance of the jointly estimated frequency offset is found to be very close to the Cràmer-Rao lower bound.

    This paper proposes a new angular measurement system to a moving target in the presence of clutter. We apply MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) to the outputs of a Doppler filter bank consisting of quadrature mirror filter (QMF). The comparison between QMF and the short time Fourier transform (STFT) as a preprocessor of MUSIC is also discussed. DOA estimation performance by QMF-MUSIC is nearly equal to that of STFT-MUSIC. On the other hand, QMF-MUSIC overcomes STFT-MUSIC in the aspect of computational cost. In a specific example in this paper, the proposal QMF bank by Daubechies (4th order) wavelet requires 80% fewer the number of multiplications and 25% fewer the number of additions than the FFT-based STFT filter bank.

    Recently, the research on all-optical analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) has been extensively attempted to break through inherently limited operating speed of electronic devices. In this paper, we describe a novel quantization scheme by slicing supercontinuum (SC) spectrum for all-optical ADC and then propose a 2-bit all-optical ADC scheme consisting of the quantization by slicing SC spectrum and the coding by switching pulses with a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). The feasibility of the proposed quantization scheme was confirmed by numerical simulation. We conducted proof-of-principle experiments of optical quantization by slicing SC spectrum with an arrayed waveguide grating and optical coding by switching pulses with NOLM. We successfully demonstrated optical quantization and coding, which allows us to confirm the feasibility of the proposed 2-bit ADC scheme.

    Convergence of the iterative method based on the successive overrelaxation (SOR) method is investigated to solve the matrix equation in the moment analysis of array antennas. It is found this method can be applied to the sub domain method of moments with fast convergence if the grouping technique is applied and the over-relaxation parameter is properly selected, and the computation time for solving the matrix equation can be reduced to be almost proportional to the second power of the number of unknowns.
