We developed flexible liquid crystal devices using ultra-thin polyimide substrates and bonding polymer spacers, and discussed the effects of polymer spacer structure on the cell thickness uniformity of flexible LCDs. We clarified that the lattice-shaped polymer spacer is effective to stabilize the cell thickness by suppressing the flow of the liquid crystal during bending process.

Extreme learning machine (ELM) has recently attracted many researchers' interest due to its very fast learning speed, good generalization ability, and ease of implementation. However, it has a linear output layer which may limit the capability of exploring the available information, since higher-order statistics of the signals are not taken into account. To address this, we propose a novel ELM architecture in which the linear output layer is replaced by a Volterra filter structure. Additionally, the principal component analysis (PCA) technique is used to reduce the number of effective signals transmitted to the output layer. This idea not only improves the processing capability of the network, but also preserves the simplicity of the training process. Then we carry out performance evaluation and application analysis for the proposed architecture in the context of supervised classification and unsupervised equalization respectively, and the obtained results either on publicly available datasets or various channels, when compared to those produced by already proposed ELM versions and a state-of-the-art algorithm: support vector machine (SVM), highlight the adequacy and the advantages of the proposed architecture and characterize it as a promising tool to deal with signal processing tasks.

Coaxial connectors are extensively used in electrical systems and the degradation of the connector can alter the signal that is being transmitted and leads to faults, which is one of the major causes of low communication quality. In this work, the failure features caused by the degraded connector contact surface were studied. The relationship between the DC resistance and decreased real contact areas was given. Considering the inductance properties and capacitive coupling at high frequencies, the impedance characteristics of the degraded connector were discussed. Based on the transmission line theory and experimental measurement, an equivalent lump circuit of the coaxial connector was developed. For the degraded contact surface, the capacitance was analyzed, and the frequency effect was investigated. According to the high frequency characteristics of the degraded connector, a fault detection and location method for coaxial connectors in RF system was developed using a neural network method. For connectors suffering from different levels of pollution, their impedance modulus varies continuously. Considering the range of the connector's impedance parameters, the fault modes were determined. Based on the scattering parameter simulation of a RF receiver front-end circuit, the S11 and S21 parameters were obtained as feature parameters and Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to generate training and testing samples. Based on the BP neural network algorithm, the fault modes were classified and the results show the diagnosis accuracy was 97.33%.

Cloud bursting temporarily expands the capacity of a cloud-based service hosted in a private data center by renting public data center capacity when the demand for capacity spikes. To determine the optimal resources of a business-critical web system deployed over private and public data centers, this paper presents a cloud bursting approach based on long- and short-term predictions of requests to the system. In a private data center, a dedicated pool of virtual machines (VMs) is assigned to the web system on the basis of one-week predictions. Moreover, in both private and public data centers, VMs are activated on the basis of one-hour predictions. We formulate a problem that includes the total cost and response time constraints and conduct numerical simulations. The results indicate that our approach is tolerant of prediction errors and only slightly dependent on the processing power of a single VM. Even if the website receives bursty requests and one-hour predictions include a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 0.2, the total cost decreases to half the existing cost of provisioning in the private date center alone. At the same time, 95% of response time is kept below 0.15s.

In order to significantly reduce the time and space needed, compressive sensing builds upon the fundamental assumption of sparsity under a suitable discrete dictionary. However, in many signal processing applications there exists mismatch between the assumed and the true sparsity bases, so that the actual representative coefficients do not lie on the finite grid discretized by the assumed dictionary. Unlike previous work this paper introduces the unified compressive measurement operator into atomic norm denoising and investigates the problems of recovering the frequency support of a combination of multiple sinusoids from sub-Nyquist samples. We provide some useful properties to ensure the optimality of the unified framework via semidefinite programming (SDP). We also provide a sufficient condition to guarantee the uniqueness of the optimizer with high probability. Theoretical results demonstrate the proposed method can locate the nonzero coefficients on an infinitely dense grid over a wide range of SNR case.

High-resolution image and video communication in home networks is highly expected to proliferate with the spread of Wi-Fi devices and the introduction of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. This paper proposes a joint transmission and coding scheme for broadcasting high-resolution video streams over multiuser MIMO systems with an eigenbeam-space division multiplexing (E-SDM) technique. Scalable video coding makes it possible to produce the code stream comprised of multiple layers having unequal contribution to image quality. The proposed scheme jointly assigns the data of scalable code streams to subcarriers and spatial streams based on their signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values in order to transmit visually important data with high reliability. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme surpasses the conventional unequal power allocation (UPA) approach in terms of both peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of received images and correct decoding probability. PSNR performance of the proposed scheme exceeds 35dB with the probability of over 95% when received SNR is higher than 6dB. The improvement in average PSNR by the proposed scheme compared to the conventional UPA comes up to approx. 20dB at received SNR of 6dB. Furthermore, correct decoding probability reaches 95% when received SNR is greater than 4dB.

In this letter, a switching detection scheme based on a channel condition number for the MIMO-OFDM system is proposed. The switching algorithm operates by selecting one of three detection schemes of QRD-M, LR-aided MMSE-DFE, and LR-aided MMSE. The switching detection uses the threshold based on the switching algorithm according to the channel condition number. From the simulation results, the proposed detection scheme shows error detection performance and computational complexity in accordance with the threshold for switching detection.

In this paper, we propose a relaying strategy for single-carrier relay networks with frequency selective channels, where each relay node delays its received signal before amplify-and-forward processing it. We propose a computationally efficient delay design method which reduces the number of delay candidates. To further reduce computational complexity, we develop a simplified delay design method which reduces the number of weight computations. Also, we extend the design method to the case where only partial channel state information of relay-to-destination channels is available. Simulation results show that the proposed relaying strategy outperforms a conventional amplify-and-forward relaying strategy and achieves the performance close to that of a more complex filter-and-forward relaying strategy. It is also shown that the proposed delay design method achieves near-optimum performance.

Nowadays, semiconductor quantum dots have attracted intense attention as emissive materials for light-emitting diodes, due to their high photoluminescence quantum yield and the controllability of their photoluminescence spectrum by changing the core diameter. In general, semiconductor quantum dots contain large amounts of organic ligands around the core/shell structure to obtain dispersibility in solution, which leads to solution processability of the semiconductor quantum dot. Furthermore, organic ligands, such as straight alkyl chains, are generally insulating materials, which affects the carrier transport in thin-film light-emitting diodes. However, a detailed investigation has not been performed yet. In this paper, we investigated the luminance characteristics of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes containing ZnCuInS2 quantum dots with different carbon chain lengths of alkyl thiol ligands as emitting layers. By evaluating the CH2/CH3 ratio from Fourier-transform infrared spectra and thermal analysis, it was found that approximately half of the oleylamine ligands were converted to alkyl thiol ligands, and the evaporation temperature increased with increasing carbon chain length of the alkyl thiol ligands based on thermogravimetric analysis. However, the photoluminescence quantum yield and the spectral shape were almost the same, even after the ligand-exchange process from the oleylamine ligand to the alkyl thiol ligand. The peak wavelength of the photoluminescence spectra and the photoluminescence quantum yield were approximately 610 nm and 10%, respectively, for all samples. In addition, the surface morphology of spin coated ZnCuInS2 quantum-dot layers did not change after the ligand-exchange process, and the root-mean-square roughness was around 1 nm. Finally, the luminance efficiency of an inverted device structure increased with decreasing carbon chain length of the alkyl thiol ligands, which were connected around the ZnCuInS2 quantum dots. The maximum luminance and current efficiency were 86 cd/m2 and 0.083 cd/A, respectively.

We investigated the effects of a bending stress on the change in phase retardation of curved polycarbonate substrates and optical characteristics of flexible liquid crystal displays (LCDs). We clarified that the change in phase retardation was extremely small even for the substrates with a small radius of curvature, because bending stresses occurred in the inner and upper surfaces are canceled each other out. We compensated for the phase retardation of polycarbonate substrates by a positive C-plate and successfully suppressed light leakage in both non-curved and curved states. These results indicate the feasibility of high-quality flexible LCDs using polycarbonate substrates even in curved states.

In this letter, we first investigate some new properties of a known power residue frequency-hopping sequence (FHS) set which is established as an optimal one-coincidence frequency-hopping sequence (OC-FHS) set with near-optimal set size. Next, combining the mathematical structure of power residue theory with interleaving technique, we present a new class of optimal OC-FHS set, using the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT). As a result, one optimal OC-FHS set with prime length is extended to another optimal OC-FHS set with composite length in which the construction preserves the maximum Hamming correlation (MHC) and the set size as well as the optimality of the Lempel-Greenberger bound.

To construct good DNA codes based on biologically motivated constraints, it is important that they have a large minimum Hamming distance and the number of GC-content is kept constant. Also, maximizing the number of codewords in a DNA code is required for given code length, minimum Hamming distance, and number of GC-content. In most previous works on the construction of DNA codes, quaternary constant weight codes were directly used because the alphabet of DNA strands is quaternary. In this paper, we propose new coding theoretic constructions of DNA codes based on the binary Hadamard matrix from a binary sequence with ideal autocorrelation. The proposed DNA codes have a greater number of codewords than or the equal number to existing DNA codes constructed from quaternary constant weight codes. In addition, it is numerically shown that for the case of codes with length 8 or 16, the number of codewords in the proposed DNA code sets is the largest with respect to the minimum reverse complementary Hamming distances, compared to all previously known results.

In this study, expressions were compared with reference material using the coaxial feed-type open-ended cut-off circular waveguide reflection method to support simple and instantaneous evaluation of dielectric constants in small amounts of scarce liquids over a broad frequency range. S11 values were determined via electromagnetic analysis for individual jig structure conditions and dielectric property values without actual S11 measurement under the condition that the tip of the measurement jig with open and short-ended conditions and with the test material inserted. Next, information on the relationships linking jig structure, dielectric properties and S11 properties was stored on a database to simplify the procedure and improve accuracy in reference material evaluation. The accuracy of the estimation formula was first theoretically verified for cases in which values indicating the dielectric properties of the reference material and the actual material differed significantly to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results indicated that dielectric property values for various liquids measured at 0.5 and 1.0GHz using the proposed method corresponded closely to those obtained using the method previously proposed by the authors. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by determining the dielectric properties of certain liquids at octave-range continuous frequencies between 0.5 and 1.0GHz based on interpolation from limited data of several frequencies. The results indicated that the approach enables quicker and easier measurement to establish the complex permittivity of liquids over a broad frequency range than the previous method.

This paper presents a programmable wideband low pass filter (LPF) with Continuous-Time (CT)/Discrete-Time (DT) hybrid architecture. Unlike the conventional DT LPF, the proposed LPF eliminates sample & hold circuits, enabling to expand available bandwidth. The transfer function and the influence of the circuit imperfection are derived from CT/DT hybrid analysis. A prototype has been fabricated in 40 nm CMOS process. The proposed LPF achieves 2.5 GHz bandwidth by wideband equalization, which offers capacitance ratio (Cratio) and clock frequency (fCK) programmability. The proposed LPF occupies only 0.048 mm2 of active area.

Web browsing services are expanding as smartphones are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. To provide customers with appropriate quality of web-browsing services, quality design and in-service quality management on the basis of quality of experience (QoE) is important. We propose a web-browsing QoE estimation model. The most important QoE factor for web-browsing is the waiting time for a web page to load. Next, the variation in the communication quality based on a mobile network should be considered. We developed a subjective quality assessment test to clarify QoE characteristics in terms of waiting time using 20 different types of web pages and constructed a web-page QoE estimation model. We then conducted a subjective quality assessment test of web-browsing to clarify the relationship between web-page QoE and web-browsing QoE for three web sites. We obtained the following two QoE characteristics. First, the main factor influencing web-browsing QoE is the average web-page QoE. Second, when web-page QoE variation occurs, a decrease in web-page QoE with a huge amplitude causes the web-browsing QoE to decrease. We used these characteristics in constructing our web-browsing QoE estimation model. The verification test results using non-training data indicate the accuracy of the model. We also show that our findings are applicable to web-browsing quality design and solving management issues on the basis of QoE.

Wireless Ad hoc networks have been rapidly developed in recent years since they promise a wide range of applications. However, their structures, which are based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, cause a severe unfairness problem in bandwidth sharing among different users. This is an extreme drawback because in wireless ad hoc networks, all users need to be treated fairly regardless of their geographical positions. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the fairness among flows by sensing channel access of other nodes based on the information obtained at the link layer and then, controlling the packet sending rate from the link layer to the MAC layer and the dequeue rate from the queue. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves a better fairness with a good total throughput compared to conventional methods.

In order to satisfy the very high traffic demand in crowded hotspot areas and realize adequate security in future fifth-generation networks, this paper studies physical-layer security in the downlink of a two-tier ultra dense heterogeneous network, where a ubiquitous array formed by ultra dense deployed small-cells surrounds a macrocell base station. In this paper, the locations of legitimate users and eavesdroppers are drawn from Poisson point processes. Then, the cumulative distribution functions of the receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for legitimate users and eavesdroppers are derived. Further, the average secrecy rate and secrecy coverage probability for each tier as well as for the whole network are investigated. Finally, we analyze the influences on secrecy performance caused by eavesdropper density, transmit power allocation ratio, antenna number allocation ratio, and association area radius.
