This paper improves the family size of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) complementary sequences with binary inputs. By employing new mathematical description: B-type-2 of 4q-QAM constellation (integer q ≥ 2), a new construction yielding 4q-QAM complementary sequences (CSs) with length 2m (integer m ≥ 2) is developed. The resultant sequences include the known QAM CSs with binary inputs as special cases, and the family sizes of new sequences are approximately 22·2q-4q-1(22·2q-3-1) times as many as the known. Also, both new sequences and the known have the same the peak envelope power (PEP) upper bounds, when they are used in an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing communication system.

We propose an approach to allocate bandwidth for a satellite communications (SATCOM) system that includes the recent high-throughput satellite (HTS) with frequency flexibility. To efficiently operate the system, we manage the limited bandwidth resources available for SATCOM by employing a control method that allows the allocated bandwidths to exceed the communication demand of user terminals per HTS beam. To this end, we consider bandwidth allocation for SATCOM as an optimal control problem. Then, assuming that the model of communication requests is available, we propose an optimal control method by combining model predictive control and sparse optimization. The resulting control method enables the efficient use of the limited bandwidth and reduces the bandwidth loss and number of control actions for the HTS compared to a setup with conventional frequency allocation and no frequency flexibility. Furthermore, the proposed method allows to allocate bandwidth depending on various control objectives and beam priorities by tuning the corresponding weighting matrices. These findings were verified through numerical simulations by using a simple time variation model of the communication requests and predicted aircraft communication demand obtained from the analysis of actual flight tracking data.

This paper describes the equivalent-circuit model of a metamaterial composed of conducting spheres and wires. This model involves electromagnetic coupling between the conductors, with retardation. The lumped-parameter equivalent circuit, which imports retardation to the electromagnetic coupling, is developed in this paper from Maxwell's equation. Using the equivalent-circuit model, we clarify the relationship between the retardation and radiation loss; we theoretically demonstrate that the electromagnetic retardation in the near-field represents the radiation loss of the meta-atom in the far-field. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the retarded electromagnetic coupling between two meta-atoms; we estimate the changes in the resonant frequencies and the losses due to the distance between the two coupled meta-atoms. It is established that the dependence characteristics are significantly affected by electromagnetic retardation.

This paper describes a broadband low phase noise VCO implemented in 0.13 µm CMOS process. A 1-bit switched varactor and a 4-bit capacitor array are adopted in cooperation with the automatic frequency calibration (AFC) circuit to lower the VCO tuning gain (KVCO), with a measured AFC time of 6 µs. Several noise reduction techniques are exploited to minimize the phase noise of the VCO. Measurement results show the VCO generates a high frequency range from 11.37 GHz to 14.8 GHz with a KVCO of less than 270 MHz/V. The prototype exhibits a phase noise of -114.6 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz at 14.67 GHz carrier frequency and draws 10.5 mA current from a 1.2 V supply. The achieved figure-of-merits (FoM=-186.9dBc/Hz, FoMT=-195.3dBc/Hz) favorably compares with the state-of-the-art.
By exploiting the inherent sparsity of wireless channels, the channel estimation in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system can be cast as a compressed sensing (CS) problem to estimate the channel more accurately. Practically, matching pursuit algorithms such as orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) are used, where path delays of the channel is guessed based on correlation values for every quantized delay with residual. This full search approach requires a predefined grid of delays with high resolution, which induces the high computational complexity because correlation values with residual at a huge number of grid points should be calculated. Meanwhile, the correlation values with high resolution can be obtained by interpolation between the correlation values at a low resolution grid. Also, the interpolation can be implemented with a low pass filter (LPF). By using this fact, in this paper we substantially reduce the computational complexity to calculate the correlation values in channel estimation using CS.

Nowadays, open source software (OSS) systems are adopted by proprietary software projects. To reduce the risk of using problematic OSS systems (e.g., causing system crashes), it is important for proprietary software projects to assess OSS systems in advance. Therefore, OSS quality assessment models are studied to obtain information regarding the quality of OSS systems. Although the OSS quality assessment models are partially validated using a small number of case studies, to the best of our knowledge, there are few studies that empirically report how industrial projects actually use OSS quality assessment models in their own development process. In this study, we empirically evaluate the cost and effectiveness of OSS quality assessment models at Fujitsu Kyushu Network Technologies Limited (Fujitsu QNET). To conduct the empirical study, we collect datasets from (a) 120 OSS projects that Fujitsu QNET's projects actually used and (b) 10 problematic OSS projects that caused major problems in the projects. We find that (1) it takes average and median times of 51 and 49 minutes, respectively, to gather all assessment metrics per OSS project and (2) there is a possibility that we can filter problematic OSS systems by using the threshold derived from a pool of assessment metrics. Fujitsu QNET's developers agree that our results lead to improvements in Fujitsu QNET's OSS assessment process. We believe that our work significantly contributes to the empirical knowledge about applying OSS assessment techniques to industrial projects.

A summer-embedded sense amplifier (SE SA) is proposed to reduce feedback loop delay (TFB) in a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). In the SE SA, the position of the ISI compensator is changed from the latch input to the latch output, and hence the TFB is reduced. The simulated DFE achieves 32Gb/s and 66fJ/b with a 1-V 65-nm CMOS process.

Nyquist folding receiver (NYFR) is a novel reconnaissance receiving architecture and it can realize wideband receiving with small amount of equipment. As a tradeoff of non-cooperative wideband receiving, the NYFR output will add an unknown key parameter that is called Nyquist zone (NZ) index. In this letter, we concentrate on the NZ index estimation of the NYFR output. Focusing on the basic pulse radar signals, the constant frequency signal, the binary phase coded signal and the linear frequency modulation signal are considered. The matching component function is proposed to estimate the NZ indexes of the NYFR outputs without the prior information of the signal modulation type. In addition, the relations between the matching component function and the parameters of the NYFR are discussed. Simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.
Automatic game strategy data acquisition is important for the realization of the professional strategy analysis systems by providing evaluation values such as the team status and the efficacy of plays. The key factor that influences the performance of the strategy data acquisition in volleyball game is the unknown player roles. Player role means the position with game meaning of each player in the team formation, such as the setter, attacker and blocker. The unknown player role makes individual player unreliable and loses the contribution of each player in the strategy analysis. This paper proposes a court-divisional team motion feature and a player performance curve to deal with the unknown player roles in strategy data acquisition. Firstly, the court-divisional team motion feature is proposed for the team tactical status detection. This feature reduces the influence of individual player information by summing up the ball relative motion density of all the players in divided court area, which corresponds to the different plays. Secondly, the player performance curves are proposed for the efficacy variables acquisition in attack play. The player roles candidates are detected by three features that represent the entire process of a player starting to rush (or jump) to the ball and hit the ball: the ball relative distance, ball approach motion and the attack motion feature. With the 3D ball trajectories and multiple players' positions tracked from multi-view volleyball game videos, the experimental detection rate of each team status (attack, defense-ready, offense-ready and offense status) are 75.2%, 84.2%, 79.7% and 81.6%. And for the attack efficacy variables acquisition, the average precision of the set zone, the number of available attackers, the attack tempo and the number of blockers are 100%, 100%, 97.8%, and 100%, which achieve 8.3% average improvement compared with manual acquisition.

A simple and novel multiple-symbol differential detection (MSDD) scheme is proposed for IEEE 802.15.4 binary phase shift keying (BPSK) receivers. The detection is initiated by estimating and compensating the carrier frequency offset (CFO) effect in the chip sample of interest. With these new statistics, the decisions are jointly made by allowing the observation window length to be longer than two bit intervals. Simulation results demonstrate that detection reliability of the IEEE 802.15.4 BPSK receivers is significantly improved. Namely, at packet error rate (PER) of 1×10-3, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gap between ideal coherent detection (perfect carrier reference phase and no CFO) with differential decoding and conventional optimal single differential coherent detection (SDCD) is filled by 2.1dB when the observation window length is set to 6bit intervals. Then, the benefit that less energy consumed by retransmissions is successfully achieved.
In this letter, we present a class of binary sequences with optimal autocorrelation magnitude. Compared with Krengel-Ivanov sequences, some proposed sequences have different autocorrelation distribution. This indicates those sequences would be new. As an application of constructed binary sequences, we derive a class of quaternary sequences of length 4p with autocorrelation magnitude equal to $2sqrt{2}$, which is lower than the autocorrelation magnitude equal to 4 of Chung-Han-Yang sequences given in 2011.

Optimal loads and maximum achievable efficiency for multiple-receiver inductive power transfer (IPT) system have been formulated by theoretical studies in literatures. This paper presents extended analysis on system behavior at optimal load condition and extensive S-parameter evaluation to validate the formulas. Our results confirm that at the optimal load condition, the system is in a resonance state; the impact of cross-coupling among receivers is completely mitigated; and the efficiency reaches its maximum expressed by an efficiency angle tangent, in an manner analogous to the well-known kQ-theory for single-receiver IPT. Our contributions do not lie in practical applications of multiple-receiver IPT but in establishing principles for design and benchmarking the system.

Mining software repositories allow software practitioners to improve the quality of software systems and to support maintenance based on historical data. Such data is scattered across autonomous and heterogeneous information sources, such as version control, bug tracking and build automation systems. Despite having many tools to track and measure the data originated from such repositories, software practitioners often suffer from a scarcity of the techniques necessary to dynamically leverage software repositories to fulfill their complex information needs. For example, answering a question such as “What is the number of commits between two successful builds?” requires tiresome manual inspection of multiple repositories. As a solution, this paper presents a conceptual framework and a proof of concept visual query interface to satisfy distinct software quality related information needs of software practitioners. The data originated from repositories is integrated and analyzed to perform systematic investigations, which helps to uncover hidden relationships between software quality and trends of software evolution. This approach has several significant benefits such as the ability to perform real-time analyses, the ability to combine data from various software repositories and generate queries dynamically. The framework evaluated with 31 subjects by using a series of questions categorized into three software evolution scenarios. The evaluation results evidently show that our framework surpasses the state of the art tools in terms of correctness, time and usability.
In this letter, we consider the harvested-energy fairness problem in cognitive multicast systems with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. In the cognitive multicast system, a cognitive transmitter with multi-antenna sends the same information to cognitive users in the presence of licensed users, and cognitive users can decode information and harvest energy with a power-splitting structure. The harvested-energy fairness problem is formulated and solved by using two proposed algorithms, which are based on semidefinite relaxation with majorization-minimization method, and sequential parametric convex approximation with feasible point pursuit technique, respectively. Finally, the performances of the proposed solutions and baseline schemes are verified by simulation results.

Android app developers sometimes copy code snippets posted on a question-and-answer (Q&A) website and use them in their apps. However, if a code snippet has vulnerabilities, Android apps containing the vulnerable snippet could also have the same vulnerabilities. Despite this, the effect of such vulnerable snippets on the Android apps has not been investigated in depth. In this paper, we investigate the correspondence between the vulnerable code snippets and vulnerable apps. we collect code snippets from a Q&A website, extract possibly vulnerable snippets, and calculate similarity between those snippets and bytecode on vulnerable apps. Our experimental results show that 15.8% of all evaluated apps that have SSL implementation vulnerabilities (Improper host name verification), 31.7% that have SSL certificate verification vulnerabilities, and 3.8% that have WEBVIEW remote code execution vulnerabilities contain possibly vulnerable code snippets from Stack Overflow. In the worst case, a single problematic snippet has caused 4,844 apps to contain a vulnerability, accounting for 31.2% of all collected apps with that vulnerability.

When trying to estimate time-varying multipath channels by applying a basis expansion model (BEM) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, pilot clusters are contaminated by inter-carrier interference (ICI). The pilot cluster ICI (PC-ICI) degrades the estimation accuracy of BEM coefficients, which degrades system performance. In this paper, a PC-ICI suppression scheme is proposed, in which two coded symbols defined as weighted sums of data symbols are inserted on both sides of each pilot cluster. Under the assumption that the channel has Flat Doppler spectrum, the optimized weight coefficients are obtained by an alternating iterative optimization algorithm, so that the sum of the PC-ICI generated by the encoded symbols and the data symbols is minimized. By approximating the optimized weight coefficients, they are independent of the channel tap power. Furthermore, it is verified that the proposed scheme is robust to the estimation error of the normalized Doppler frequency offset and can be applied to channels with other types of Doppler spectra. Numerical simulation results show that, compared with the conventional schemes, the proposed scheme achieves significant improvements in the performance of PC-ICI suppression, channel estimation and system bit-error-ratio (BER).

Recently, a control technique of light distribution pattern has become important to improve the functionality and the light utilization efficiency of electronic displays, illumination devices and so on. As a light control technique, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals (PDLCs) have been commonly used so far. However, a precise control of the light diffusion distribution of conventional PDLC has been difficult due to the random polymer network structure, which results in the low light utilization efficiency. On the other hand, reverse-mode PDLCs with homogeneously aligned molecules can anisotropically diffuse light. The reverse-mode PDLC, however, has polarization dependency in the haze value due to homogeneously aligned molecules, which also results in the low light utilization efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the optimization method of light diffusion distribution without the molecules alignment treatment, and we have proposed a novel PDLC with structure-controlled polymer network which was fabricated by the irradiation with uni-directionally diffused UV light. In this paper, we investigated the effect of the process temperature during UV irradiation on the internal structure and light diffusion distribution of the proposed PDLC. As a result, in case that the mixture during UV irradiation was in isotropic phase, we clarified that the structure-controlled PDLCs with alternating striped LCs/polymer pattern could be obtained because the mixture was sufficiently irradiated with uni-directionally diffused UV light. For the high haze, this structure-controlled PDLC should be fabricated as low temperature as possible with maintaining the mixture in isotropic phase so that the mixture was not a nano-scaled molecular mixing state. Also, this PDLC had no polarization dependency in the haze value and could electrically switch the light distribution pattern between anisotropic light diffusion and light transmission. From the above results, we concluded that the proposed PDLC could precisely control the light diffusion distribution, and realize the high light utilization efficiency.

From the results of the simulation, we clarified that response time, alignment uniformity and viewing angle range of TVA-mode LCDs were improved by controlling the liquid crystal alignment axis-symmetrically in each pixel.
