In data center networks, Quantized Congestion Notification (QCN) has been ratified as the standard congestion management mechanism in the link layer. Since QCN nonlinearly switches between the rate increase and decrease stages, it is very difficult to understand QCN in depth and provide theoretical guidelines on setting the buffer size of the QCN switch. This paper gives an explicit formula for the boundary of buffer occupancy of the QCN switch. Specifically, based on the fluid model of QCN, we first derive the uniformly asymptotic stability condition of the QCN system. Then, under the condition that QCN is uniformly asymptotically stable, we analyze the buffer occupancy of the QCN switch theoretically and show that the classic rule-of-thumb for buffer sizing is not suitable for QCN. Finally, simulations validate the accuracy of our theoretical results.

Measurement matrix construction is critically important to signal sampling and reconstruction for compressed sensing. From a practical point of view, deterministic construction of the measurement matrix is better than random construction. In this paper, we propose a novel deterministic method to construct a measurement matrix for compressed sensing, CS-FF (compressed sensing-finite field) algorithm. For this proposed algorithm, the constructed measurement matrix is from the finite field Quasi-cyclic Low Density Parity Check (QC-LDPC) code and thus it has quasi-cyclic structure. Furthermore, we construct three groups of measurement matrices. The first group matrices are the proposed matrix and other matrices including deterministic construction matrices and random construction matrices. The other two group matrices are both constructed by our method. We compare the recovery performance of these matrices. Simulation results demonstrate that the recovery performance of our matrix is superior to that of the other matrices. In addition, simulation results show that the compression ratio is an important parameter to analyse and predict the recovery performance of the proposed measurement matrix. Moreover, these matrices have less storage requirement than that of a random one, and they achieve a better trade-off between complexity and performance. Therefore, from practical perspective, the proposed scheme is hardware friendly and easily implemented, and it is suitable to compressed sensing for its quasi-cyclic structure and good recovery performance.

This paper describes an equivalent circuit analysis of a meta-surface using a double-layered patch-type frequency-selective surface (FSS); the analysis considers the coupling between FSSs. Two types of double-layered structures are examined. One is a stacked structure and the other is an alternated structure. The results calculated using the equivalent circuit are in agreement with the results of the FDTD analysis. In addition, it is clarified that the stacked and alternated structures exhibit the common mode and the differential mode coupling, respectively. Moreover, experiments support analysis results for both stacked and alternated structures.

This paper proposes a power supply voltage control technique, and demonstrates its effectiveness for eliminating the overkills and underkills due to the power supply characteristic difference between an automatic test equipment (ATE) and a practical operating environment of the DUT. The proposed method controls the static power supply voltage on the ATE system, so that the ATE can eliminate misjudges for the Pass or Fail of the DUT. The method for calculating the power supply voltage is also described. Experimental results show that the proposed method can eliminate 89% of overkills and underkills in delay fault testing with 105 real silicon devices. Limitations of the proposed method are also discussed.

The indexes of the degradation of C/N, ΔT/T and I/N, which can be converted from one to another, are used to evaluate the impact of interference on the satellite link. However, it is not suitable to intuitively understand how these parameters degrade the quality of services. In this paper, we propose to evaluate the impact of interference on the performance of BSS (Broadcasting Satellite Services) in terms of the increase rate of the outage time caused by the rain attenuation. Some calculation results are given for the 12GHz band BSS in Japan.

We propose a speech analysis method based on the source-filter model using multivariate empirical mode decomposition (MEMD). The proposed method takes multiple adjacent frames of a speech signal into account by combining their log spectra into multivariate signals. The multivariate signals are then decomposed into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The IMFs are divided into two groups using the peak of the autocorrelation function (ACF) of an IMF. The first group characterized by a spectral fine structure is used to estimate the fundamental frequency F0 by using the ACF, whereas the second group characterized by the frequency response of the vocal-tract filter is used to estimate formant frequencies by using a peak picking technique. There are two advantages of using MEMD: (i) the variation in the number of IMFs is eliminated in contrast with single-frame based empirical mode decomposition and (ii) the common information of the adjacent frames aligns in the same order of IMFs because of the common mode alignment property of MEMD. These advantages make the analysis more accurate than with other methods. As opposed to the conventional linear prediction (LP) and cepstrum methods, which rely on the LP order and cut-off frequency, respectively, the proposed method automatically separates the glottal-source and vocal-tract filter. The results showed that the proposed method exhibits the highest accuracy of F0 estimation and correctly estimates the formant frequencies of the vocal-tract filter.

This paper presents a weighted diversity combining technique for the cyclostationarity detection based spectrum sensing of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals in cognitive radio. In cognitive radio systems, secondary users must detect the desired signal in an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environment. In such an environment, multiple antenna techniques (space diversity) such as maximum ratio combining are not effective because the energy of the target signal is also extremely weak, and it is difficult to synchronize some received signals. The cyclic autocorrelation function (CAF) is used for traditional cyclostationarity detection based spectrum sensing. In the presented technique, the CAFs of the received signals are combined, while the received signals themselves are combined with general space diversity techniques. In this paper, the value of the CAF at peak and non-peak cyclic frequencies are computed, and we attempt to improve the sensing performance by using different weights for each CAF value. The results were compared with those from conventional methods and showed that the presented technique can improve the spectrum sensing performance.

In this paper, an iterative robust minimum-mean square error (MMSE) receiver for space-time block coding (STBC) is proposed to mitigate the performance degradations caused by channel state information (CSI) errors. The proposed scheme estimates an instantaneous covariance matrix of the effective noise, which includes additive white Gaussian noise and the effect of CSI errors. For this estimation, multiple solution candidate vectors are selected based on the distances between the MMSE estimate of the solution and the constellation points, and their a-posteriori probabilities are utilized to execute the estimation of the covariance matrix. To improve the estimation accuracy, the estimated covariance matrix is updated iteratively. Simulation results show that proposed robust receiver achieves substantial performance gains in terms of bit error rates as compared to conventional receiver schemes under CSI errors.

In 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE (Long Term Evolution) systems, when HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat request) retransmission is invoked, the data at the transmitter are retransmitted randomly or sequentially regardless of their relationship to the wrongly decoded data. Such practice is inefficient since precious transmission resources will be spent to retransmit data that may be of no use in error correction at the receiver. This paper proposes an incremental redundancy HARQ scheme based on Error Position Estimating Coding (ePec) and LDPC (Low Density Parity Check Code) channel coding, which is called ePec-LDPC HARQ. The proposal is able to feedback the wrongly decoded code blocks within a specific MAC (Media Access Control) PDU (Protocol Data Unit) from the receiver. The transmitter gets the feedback information and then performs targeted retransmission. That is, only the data related to the wrongly decoded code blocks are retransmitted, which can improve the retransmission efficiency and thus reduce the retransmission overload. An enhanced incremental redundancy LDPC coding approach, called EIR-LDPC, together with a physical layer framing method, is developed to implement ePec-LDPC HARQ. Performance evaluations show that ePec-LDPC HARQ reduces the overall transmission resources by 15% compared to a conventional LDPC HARQ scheme. Moreover, the average retransmission times of each MAC PDU and the transmission delay are also reduced considerably.

In this paper, we present the channel estimation (CE) problem in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM). Most CE methods rely on the assumption of a low frequency selective channel to tackle the problem in a way similar to OFDM. However, these methods would result in a severe performance degradation of the channel estimation when the assumption is not quite inaccurate. Instead, we focus on estimating the channel impulse response (CIR) itself which makes no assumption on the degree of frequency selectivity of the channels. After describing the main idea of this technique, we present an iterative CE method that does not require zero-value guard symbols in the preamble and consequently improves the spectral efficiency. This is done by the iterative estimation of the unknown transmitted data adjacent to the preamble. Analysis and simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed method in multipath fading channels.

A small-signal gain of 20dB and a 3-dB bandwidth of 22GHz are achieved. It consumes 75mW from a 0.94-V voltage supply. The die area with balun and pads is 945×842µm2 and the size of the core not including input/output matching networks is 201×284µm2. The small core area is made possible by using a refined “fishbone” layout technique.

This paper proposes a new quantization framework on activation function of deep neural networks (DNN). We implement fixed-point DNN by quantizing the activations into powers-of-two integers. The costly multiplication operations in using DNN can be replaced with low-cost bit-shifts to massively save computations. Thus, applying DNN-based speech recognition on embedded systems becomes much easier. Experiments show that the proposed method leads to no performance degradation.

The cardinality balanced multi-target multi-Bernoulli (CBMeMBer) filter has emerged as a promising tool for tracking a time-varying number of targets. However, the standard CBMeMBer filter may perform poorly when measurements are coupled with sensor biases. This paper extends the CBMeMBer filter for simultaneous target tracking and sensor biases estimation by introducing the sensor translational biases into the multi-Bernoulli distribution. In the extended CBMeMBer filter, the biases are modeled as the first order Gauss-Markov process and assumed to be uncorrelated with target states. Furthermore, the sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) method is adopted to handle the non-linearity and the non-Gaussian conditions. Simulations are carried out to examine the performance of the proposed filter.

Internal power losses in lumped-element impedance matching circuits are formulated by means of Q factors of the elements and port impedances to be matched. Assuming that Q factors are relatively high, the above mentioned loss is expressed by a simple formula containing only the tangents of the impedances. The formula is a powerful tool for such applications that put emphasis on power efficiency as wireless power transfer. As well as the formulation, we illustrate some design examples with the derived formula: design of the least lossy L-section circuit and two-stage low-pass ladder. The examples provide ready-to-use knowledge for low-loss matching design.

This paper introduces a novel Direct Digital Frequency Synthesizer based on Complementary Dual-Phase Latch-Based sequencing method. Compared to conventional Direct Digital Frequency Synthesizer using Flip-Flop as synchronizing element, the proposed architecture allows to double the data sampling rate while trading-off area and Power Efficiency. Digital domain modulations can be easily implemented by using a Direct Digital Frequency Synthesizer. However, due to performance limitations, CMOS-based applications have been almost exclusively restricted to VHF, UHF and L bands. This work aims to increase the operation speed and extend the applicability of this technology to Multi-band Multi-standard wireless systems operating up to 2.7 GHz. The design features a 24 bits pipelined Phase Accumulator and a 14x10 bits Phase to Amplitude Converter. The Phase to Amplitude Converter module is compressed by using Quarter Wave Symmetry technique and is entirely made up of combinational logic inserted into 12 Complementary Dual-Phase Latch-Based pipeline stages. The logic is represented in the form of Sum of Product terms obtained from a 14x10 bits sinusoidal Look-Up-Table. The proposed Direct Digital Frequency Synthesizer is designed and simulated based on 65nm CMOS standard-cell technology. A maximum data sampling rate of 6.8 GS/s is expected. Estimated Spurious Free Dynamic Range and Power Efficiency are 61 dBc and 22 mW/(GS/s) respectively.

Near field communication (NFC) antennas are often lined with magnetic sheets to reduce performance degradation caused by nearby metal objects. Though amorphous sheets have a high permeability and are suitable magnetic sheets for lining, their magnetic loss is also high. Therefore, this paper suggests a technique of suppressing magnetic loss by modifying the shape of the sheet without changing its composition. The utility of the proposed technique was investigated in this study.

Sensor networks are often used to understand underlying phenomena that are reflected through sensing data. In real world applications, this understanding supports decision makers attempting to access a disaster area or monitor a certain event regularly and thus necessary actions can be triggered in response to the problems. Practitioners designing such systems must overcome difficulties due to the practical limitations of the data and the fidelity of a network condition. This paper explores the design of a network solution for the data acquisition domain with the goal of increasing the efficiency of data gathering efforts. An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is introduced to address various real-world sensor network challenges such as limited resources, lack of real-time representative data, and mobility of a relay station. Towards this goal, we introduce a novel cooperative path selection framework to effectively collect data from multiple sensor sources. The framework consists of six main parts ranging from the system initialization to the UAV data acquisition. The UAV data acquisition is useful to increase situational awareness or used as inputs for data manipulation that support response efforts. We develop a system-based simulation that creates the representative sensor networks and uses the UAV for collecting data packets. Results using our proposed framework are analyzed and compared to existing approaches to show the efficiency of the scheme.
