The complexity of Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters is mainly dominated by the number of adders (subtractors) used to implement the coefficient multipliers. It is well known that Common Subexpression Elimination (CSE) method based on Canonic Signed Digit (CSD) representation considerably reduces the number of adders in coefficient multipliers. Recently, a binary-based CSE (BSE) technique was proposed, which produced better reduction of adders compared to the CSD-based CSE. In this paper, we propose a new 4-bit binary representation-based CSE (BCSE-4) method which employs 4-bit Common Subexpressions (CSs) for implementing higher order low-power FIR filters. The proposed BCSE-4 offers better reduction of adders by eliminating the redundant 4-bit CSs that exist in the binary representation of filter coefficients. The reduction of adders is achieved with a small increase in critical path length of filter coefficient multipliers. Design examples show that our BCSE-4 gives an average power consumption reduction of 5.2% and 6.1% over the best known CSE method (BSE, NR-SCSE) respectively, when synthesized with TSMC-0.18 µm technology. We show that our BCSE-4 offers an overall adder reduction of 6.5% compared to BSE without any increase in critical path length of filter coefficient multipliers.

In a sensor network, a certain area or environment are observed by a lot of distributed sensor nodes and a sink collects data observed by sensor nodes. The observed data sequences that sensor nodes generate may have space- and/or time-dependent correlation. This correlation is regarded as redundant information and can be used for channel error correction by joint decoder using correlation. In this paper, we propose the joint decoding scheme using the time-dependent correlation consisting of the consecutive data sequences generated by a sensor node. We also propose a power control scheme using the time-dependent correlation for reduction in energy consumption. We evaluate the packet error rate and the energy consumption ratio, and clarify the effect of our proposed schemes.

The application of Cumulative Decision Feedback (DF) technique for energy/complexity constrained Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) is considered. Theoretical bit error probability and average rate of a BPSK modulated DF are derived together with PHY-MAC layers' energy efficiency model for DF and Forward Error Correction (FEC) techniques. Moreover, an empirical optimization, which in turn relies upon a low complexity SNR estimation method also derived in this letter, is applied to the DF technique in order to obtain maximum energy efficiency.

In this letter, two OTAs with MOSFETs operating in the weak inversion region are proposed. One of the OTAs uses the exponential-logarithm transformation algorithm. Furthermore, the other realizes the high-linearity characteristics due to a small fluctuation of the common-terminal voltage of differential pair. The performance of the proposed OTAs was confirmed by HSPICE simulation.

In this paper, an efficient node-level target classification scheme in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is proposed. It uses acoustic and seismic information, and its performance is verified by the classification accuracy of vehicles in a WSN. Because of the hard limitation in resources, parametric classifiers should be more preferable than non-parametric ones in WSN systems. As a parametric classifier, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) algorithm not only shows good performances to classify targets in WSNs, but it also requires very few resources suitable to a sensor node. In addition, our sensor fusion method uses a decision tree, generated by the classification and regression tree (CART) algorithm, to improve the accuracy, so that the algorithm drives a considerable increase of the classification rate using less resources. Experimental results using a real dataset of WSN show that the proposed scheme shows a 94.10% classification rate and outperforms the k-nearest neighbors and the support vector machine.

In this study, attenuated total reflection (ATR) utilizing surface plasmon (SP) excitation and SP emission lights were observed for the adsorption of polystyrene (PS) spheres and a water-soluble polymer. The PS spheres contained fluorescent dyes and exhibited red fluorescence. The ATR properties indicated film deposition with increasing number of adsorption cycles. The SP emission light induced by the fluorescent dye in the spheres was also measured, and an increase in the peak intensity, as well as an angle shift, was observed. Furthermore, the SP emission light spectra were investigated at various emission angles. The dispersion relation obtained from the SP emission light almost corresponded to that obtained from the ATR curves.

Hierarchical approaches using multi-resolution images are well-known techniques to reduce the computational amount without degrading quality. One major issue in designing image processors is to design a memory system that supports parallel access with a simple interconnection network. The complexity of the interconnection network mainly depends on memory allocation; it maps pixels onto memory modules and determines the required number of memory modules. This paper presents a memory allocation method to minimize the number of memory modules for image processing using multi-resolution images. For efficient search, the proposed method exploits the regularity of window-type image processing. A practical example demonstrates that the number of memory modules is reduced to less than 14% that of conventional methods.

Partial transmit sequence (PTS) is a well known technique used to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal. However, it has relatively high complexity due to the computation of multiple inverse fast Fourier transforms (IFFTs). To reduce this complexity, we use intermediate signals within a decimation in frequency (DIF) radix IFFT and propose a new PTS subblocking technique which requires the computation of only partial IFFTs. Performance results are presented which show a PAPR reduction similar to that with other techniques such as original PTS (O-PTS). Further, we show that complexity reduction can be achieved with either low or high radix IFFT algorithms.
In this paper, a new lifting-based shape-direction-adaptive discrete wavelet transform (SDA-DWT) which can be used for arbitrarily shaped segments is proposed. The SDA-DWT contains three major techniques: the lifting-based DWT, the adaptive directional technique, and the concept of object-based compression in MPEG-4. With SDA-DWT, the number of transformed coefficients is equal to the number of pixels in the arbitrarily shaped segment image, and the spatial correlation across subbands is well preserved. SDA-DWT also can locally adapt its filtering directions according to the texture orientations to improve energy compaction for images containing non-horizontal or non-vertical edge textures. SDA-DWT can be applied to any application that is wavelet based and the lifting technique provides much flexibility for hardware implementation. Experimental results show that, for still object images with rich orientation textures, SDA-DWT outperforms SA-DWT up to 5.88 dB in PSNR under 2.15-bpp (bit / object pixel) condition, and reduces the bit-budget up to 28.5% for lossless compression. SDA-DWT also outperforms DA-DWT up to 5.44 dB in PSNR under 3.28-bpp condition, and reduces the bit-budget up to 14.0%.

The properties of the surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) are mainly decided by the surface-conduction electron emitters (SCE), which are normally made from the expensive metal Pd. In this study, we propose to use metal Zn instead of Pd as the emitter material. Both the device electrode and ZnO thin film are deposited by a sputter, and the electron emitters (SCE) are formed by the electro-forming process. The electron emission characteristic is obtained and the luminescence is observed.

A total-field/scattered-field (TF/SF) boundary which is commonly used in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to illuminate scatterers by plane waves, is developed for use in the constrained interpolation profile (CIP) method. By taking the numerical dispersion into account, the nearly perfect TF/SF boundary can be achieved, which allows us to calculate incident fields containing high frequency components without fictitious scattered fields. First of all, we formulate the TF/SF boundary in the CIP scheme. The numerical dispersion relation is then reviewed. Finally the numerical dispersion is implemented in the TF/SF boundary to estimate deformed incident fields. The performance of the nearly perfect TF/SF boundary is examined by measuring leaked fields in the SF region, and the proposed method drastically diminish the leakage compared with the simple TF/SF boundary.

Selecting transparently a proper network connection for voice communication will be a fundamental requirement in future multi-mode heterogeneous wireless network. This paper presented a smart session selection (S3) scheme to meet this requirement. Instead of selecting a best access network as in conventional Always Best Connected (ABC) paradigm, S3 enables users to select a best network connection, which consists of source and destination access network pair, to satisfy quality constraint and users' preference. To support S3, we develop a user profile to specify network connection priority. Meanwhile IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) is extended to make smart decision for users. Finally, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) is used to recommend a network connection with assistance of user profile and IMS signaling. An example is illustrated to show that AHP can successfully select a good network connection that fulfills the requirement of users.

This paper proposes an asymmetric traffic accommodation scheme using a multihop transmission technique for CDMA/FDD cellular communication systems. The proposed scheme exploits the multihop transmission to downlink packet transmissions, which require the large transmission power at their single-hop transmissions, in order to increase the downlink capacity. In these multihop transmissions, vacant uplink band is used for the transmissions from relay stations to destination mobile stations, and this leads more capacity enhancement in the downlink communications. The relay route selection method and power control method for the multihop transmissions are also investigated in the proposed scheme. The proposed scheme is evaluated by computer simulation and the results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better system performance.

Crosstalk delay within an on-chip bus can induce severe transmission performance penalties. The Bus-grouping Asynchronous Transmission (BAT) scheme is proposed to mitigate the performance degradation. Furthermore, considering the distinct spatial locality of transition distribution on some types of buses, we use the locality to optimize the BAT. In terms of the implementation, we propose the Differential Counter Cluster (DCC) synchronous mechanism to synchronize the data transmission, and the Delay Active Shielding (DAS) to protect some critical signals from crosstalk and optimize the routing area overhead. The BAT is scalable with the variation of bus width with little extra implementation complexity. The effectiveness of the BAT is evaluated by focusing on the on-chip buses of a superscalar microprocessor simulator using the SPEC CPU2000 benchmarks. When applied to a 64-bit on-chip instruction bus, the BAT scheme, compared with the conservative approach, Codec and Variable Cycle Transmission (DYN) approaches, improves performance by 55+%, 10+%, 30+%, respectively, at the expense of 13% routing area overhead.

To meet the bandwidth requirements of multimedia services, multipath transmission is a promising solution. In this paper, we consider multi-access networks, where WiMAX and WiFi links are set up at the same time. Multipath transmission suffers from the intrinsic problem of out-of-order packet delivery. This has an adverse impact on TCP and even UDP-based delay sensitive applications. However, multimedia streaming services allow some tolerance to transmission delay. Motivated by this observation, we investigate how to split multimedia flows over heterogeneous links. Wireless link capacity varies widely over time due to dynamic radio conditions. The capacity variations should be promptly reflected in traffic splitting in order to accomplish an equal load-balance. A practical prototype system has been implemented. We have performed extensive measurements from a prototype system. Through practical experimental results, we could verify two major research goals. One is that multimedia splitting can improve the overall network performance (e.g., the permitted multimedia sessions or the aggregated bandwidth) while still keeping an acceptable media quality. The other is an adaptation capability to varying link quality. It has been widely investigated under various radio conditions and different monitoring intervals. It is shown that the adaptive technique is effective under dynamic radio environments.

Data compression is popularly applied to computer systems and communication systems in order to reduce storage size and communication time, respectively. Since large data are used frequently, string matching for such data takes a long time. If the data are compressed, the time gets much longer because decompression is necessary. Long string matching time makes computer virus scan time longer and gives serious influence to the security of data. From this, CPM (Compression Pattern Matching) methods for several compression methods have been proposed. This paper proposes CPM method for PPM which achieves fast virus scan and improves dependability of the compressed data, where PPM is based on a Markov model, uses a context information, and achieves a better compression ratio than BW transform and Ziv-Lempel coding. The proposed method encodes the context information, which is generated in the compression process, and appends the encoded data at the beginning of the compressed data as a header. The proposed method uses only the header information. Computer simulation says that augmentation of the compression ratio is less than 5 percent if the order of the PPM is less than 5 and the source file size is more than 1 M bytes, where order is the maximum length of the context used in PPM compression. String matching time is independent of the source file size and is very short, less than 0.3 micro seconds in the PC used for the simulation.

In an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) receiver with direct-conversion architecture, carrier frequency offset (CFO) and direct-current offset (DCO), which cause severe performance degradation, need to be estimated and compensated. Recently, by investigating the subspace of OFDM signal after coarse DCO cancellation using time-domain average, we have proposed a nullspace-based estimator (NSE), for blind CFO and DCO estimation. In this paper, based on an analysis of the cost function of the NSE, we propose a common nullspace based estimator (CNSE). It is shown that by matching the frequency occupation of the received OFDM signal with CFO and DCO, the CNSE can achieve the full performance potential of the NSE. Also, the performance analysis reveals that the CNSE can asymptotically approach the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) of OFDM CFO estimation in the presence of DCO. Finally the analysis results are confirmed by simulations.

We obtained blue photoluminescence from tantalum oxide films deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering after annealing. The maximum peak intensity of the photoluminescence was observed from a sample annealed at 600 for 20 min, and the peak wavelength was approximately 430 nm. Tantalum oxide films that emit blue light may be useful materials for novel active optical devices utilizing Ta2O5/SiO2 multilayered photonic crystals.
