Superluminal group velocity in dispersive media has long been controversial. A partial source of confusion seems to be the absence of high precision numerical results concerning the waveform of the transmitted signal. This paper gives the precise waveforms of a causal half-sine-modulated pulse and a triangle-modulated pulse propagating in the Lorentz medium. Thus, the effects of analyticity of signal are clarified, which the analysis using Gaussian pulse cannot. Further, to deepen understanding of the mechanism of superluminal group velocity, we give a network theoretic consideration.

In this study, a CG animation tool was designed that allows interpolation and extrapolation of two types of repeated motions including finger actions, for quantitative analyses of the relationship between features of human motions and subjective impressions. Three-dimensional human motions are measured with a magnetic motion capture and a pair of data gloves, and then relatively accurate time-series joint data are generated utilizing statistical characteristics. Based on the data thus obtained, time-series angular data of each joint for two dancing motions is transformed into frequency domain by Fourier transform, and spectral shape of each dancing action is interpolated. The interpolation and extrapolation of two motions can be synthesized with simple manner by changing an weight parameter while keeping good harmony of actions. Using this CG animation tool as a motion synthesizer, repeated human motions such as a dancing action that gives particular impressions on the observers can be quantitatively measured and analyzed by the synthesis of actions.

An RF front-end using a six-port circuit is a promising technology for realization of a compact software defined radio (SDR) receiver. Such a receiver, called a six-port direct conversion receiver (DCR), consists of analog circuit and digital signal processing components. The six-port DCR itself outputs four different linear combinations of received and local signals. The output powers are measured at each port, and the received signal is recovered by solving a set of linear equations. This receiver can easily cover a wide frequency band unlike the conventional DCR since it does not require the precise orthogonality that the conventional one does. In this paper, we propose a novel calibration method for a six-port system that includes nonlinear circuits such as diode detectors. We demonstrated the demodulation performance of a six-port DCR by computer simulation and experiments at 1.9, 2.45, and 5.85 GHz.

In this paper, we propose a fixed monocular camera, which changes the focus cyclically to recognize completely the three-dimensional translational motion of a rigid object. The images captured in a half cycle of the focus change form a multi-focus image sequence. The motion in depth or the focus change of the camera causes defocused blur. We develop an in-focus frame tracking operator in order to automatically detect the in-focus frame in a multi-focus image sequence of a moving object. The in-focus frame gives a 3D position in the motion of the object at the time that the frame was captured. The reconstruction of the motion of an object is performed by utilizing non-uniform sampling theory for the 3D position samples, of which information were inferred from the in-focus frames in the multi-focus image sequences.

Intensity-noise characteristics of stable multi-mode Fabry-Perot semiconductor lasers are analyzed experimentally and theoretically. Mode-partition noise caused by optical filtering and propagation through optical fibers is investigated by evaluating the relative intensity noise and signal-to-noise ratio. The experimental results indicate that the simplified two-mode analysis provides a good approximation. Suppression of the mode-partition noise by nonlinear gain is experimentally confirmed.

In this letter, we investigate the performance of using subband adaptive loading for the combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and adaptive antenna array. The frequency-domain adaptive loading is very effective to deal with the frequency-selective fading which is inevitable in broadband wireless communications. However, almost all of the existing adaptive loading algorithms are based on "subcarrier-to-subcarrier" mode which may results in awfully large signaling overhead, since every subcarrier needs its own signaling loop between the transmitter and receiver. We investigate the performance of the combination of OFDM and adaptive antenna array when a subband adaptive loading algorithm is used to decrease the signaling overhead. It is shown by simulation results that at the cost of some tolerable performance loss, the signaling overhead of adaptive loading can be greatly reduced.

In this study, nonlinear wave phenomena related to transmissions and reflections of the phase-inversion waves around a discontinuity of a coupled system consisting of two kinds of arrays of van der Pol oscillators are investigated. By computer simulations, behavior of the phase-inversion waves around the discontinuity in the coupled system is classified into eight types. Further, the mechanisms of the transmission and the reflection of a phase-inversion wave at the discontinuity are explained. Circuit experiments confirm the simulated results.

A digital/analog hybrid system is presented which implements the cardinal polynomial spline interpolation of arbitrary degree. Based on the fact that the (m-1)st derivative of a spline of degree m-1 is a staircase function, this system generates a cardinal spline of degree m-1 by m-1 cascaded integrators with a staircase function input. A given sequence of sampled values are transformed by a digital filter into coefficients for the B-spline representation of the spline interpolating the sampled values. The values of its (m-1)st derivative with respect to time are computed by the recurrence formula interpreting differentiation of the spline as difference of the coefficients. Then a digital-to-analog converter generates a staircase function representing the (m-1)st derivative, which is integrated by a cascade of m-1 analog integrators to make the expected spline. In order to cope with the offset errors involved in the integrators, a dynamical sampled-data control is attached. An analog-to-digital converter is employed to sample the output of the cascaded integrators. Target state of the cascaded integrators at each sampling instance is computed from the coefficients for the B-spline representation. The state error between the target and the estimated is compensated by feeding back a weighted sum of the state error to the staircase input.

A new scheme for evaluation of shapes of pips and craters formed by arc discharges on electrical contact surfaces is proposed. Measuring a height of a pip or a depth of a crater as well as an average diameter thereof with a scanning laser microscope and then putting a plot having the measured values as its vertical and horizontal coordinates enable us to numerically and briefly evaluate shapes of those pips and craters on arc-damaged contact surfaces. Some exemplary results obtained by this evaluation scheme are presented here.

For detecting the anomalous behavior of a user effectively, most researches have concentrated on statistical techniques. However, since statistical techniques mainly analyze the average behavior of a user's activities, some anomalies can be detected inaccurately. In addition, it is difficult to model intermittent activities performed periodically. In order to model the normal behavior of a user closely, a set of various features can be employed. Given an activity of a user, the values of those features that are related to the activity represent the behavior of the activity. Furthermore, activities performed in a session of a user can be regarded as a semantically atomic transaction. Although it is possible to apply clustering technique to these values to extract the normal behavior of a user, most of conventional clustering algorithms do not consider any transactional boundary in a data set. In this paper, a transaction-based clustering algorithm for modeling the normal behavior of a user is proposed. Based on the activities of the past transactions, a set of clusters for each feature can be found to represent the normal behavior of a user as a concise profile. As a result, any anomalous behavior in an online transaction of the user can be effectively detected based on the profile of the user.

Ag(40 wt%)-Pd(60 wt%) alloy has been widely applied to contact materials installed in various electromechanical devices. However, in application to the down sized relays, failure due to contact resistance is caused easily by both growth of oxide film on the contact surface and low contact force. To solve the increase in contact resistance, an overlay of thin Au or thin Au-Ag (8-10 wt%) has been used on the alloy. Despite this, cleanliness and low hardness of these overlays cause adhesion, or sticking, at contact interface. Increase in contact resistance and sticking are contrary to each other. In order to eliminate these contrary properties, the author studied improving the Ag-Pd alloy with a dopant. Low level of contact resistance for both static and dynamic contacts of Ag-Pd with Mg doping was found even if the contact surface was covered with an oxide contaminant film. This paper presents the excellent contact resistance and adhesion behaviors of Ag-Pd-Mg alloy and their mechanisms, and also presents in the later part, surface contamination behaviors for organic gases.

Call Admission Control (CAC) is a very important issue in CDMA systems to guarantee a required quality of service (QoS) and to increase system capacity. In this paper, we proposed and analyzed the CAC scheme using multiple criterions (MCAC), which can provide a quicker processing time and better performance. One is based on the number of active users with the minimum/maximum threshold by considering the spillover ratio, and the other is based on the signal to interference ratio (SIR). If active users are lower/higher than the minimum/maximum number of users threshold (N_min )/(N_max ), we accept/reject the new call without any other considerations based on the first criterion. And if the number of active users is between the N_min and N_max, we consider the current SIR to guarantee QoS based on the second criterion. Then the system accepts the new call when the SIR satisfies the system requirements, otherwise, the call is rejected. The multiple criterions scheme is investigated and its performance is compared with the number of user based CAC and power based CAC.

The three major failures of electrical contacts for automotive relay applications are: contact welding (or contact sticking), high contact resistance and severe contact erosion due to switching arcing. With the demand of high power and multiple functions of automotive vehicles, the switching current has be dramatically increased, it results in higher failing rate, in particular for contact welding. On the other hand, the miniaturization of electromechanical relays has lead to the reduction of mechanical spring force. This not only results in the earlier contact welding but also makes the relay more susceptible to the contact resistance and arc erosion failures. This paper is a review of most recent studies on these three failure aspects. It describes the progress in the understanding of contact welding caused by short arcing and high contact resistance due to contamination of particles and films in relay manufacturing process and also it review the material transfer due to switching arcing. At the end, the brief considerations of electromechanical relays used in 42 volts have also been given.

This paper presents a novel blind multiple access interference (MAI) suppression filter in DS/CDMA systems. The filter is adaptively updated by parallel projections onto a series of convex sets. These sets are defined based on the received signal as well as a priori knowledge about the desired user's signature. In order to achieve fast convergence and good performance at steady state, the adaptive projected subgradient method (Yamada et al., 2003) is applied. The proposed scheme also jointly estimates the desired signal amplitude and the filter coefficients based on an approximation of an EM type algorithm, following the original idea proposed by Park and Doherty, 1997. Simulation results highlight the fast convergence behavior and good performance at steady state of the proposed scheme.

In order to produce precise enclosures from a multi-dimensional interval vector, we introduce a sharp interval sub-dividing condition for optimization algorithms. By utilizing interval inclusion properties, we also enhance the sampling of an upper bound for effective use in the interval quadratic method. This has resulted in an improvement in the algorithm for the unconstrained optimization problem by Hansen in 1992.

This paper proposes the design and implementation of a real-time image compressor using 2-Dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (2DDWT), which targets an FPGA as its platform. The image compressor uses Daubechies' bi-orthogonal DWT filters (9, 7) and 16-bit fixed-point data formats for wavelet coefficients in the internal calculation. The target image is NTSC 640240 pixels per field whose color format is Y:Cb:Cr = 4:2:2. We developed for the 2DDWT a new structure with four Multipliers and Accumulators (MACs) for real-time operations. We designed and used a linear fixed scalar quantizer, which includes the exceptional treatment of the coefficients whose absolute values are larger than the quantization region. Only a Huffman entropy encoder was included due to the hardware overhead. The quantizer and Huffman encoder merged into a single functional module. Due to the insufficient memory space of an FPGA, we utilized external memory (SDRAM) as the working and memory storage space. The proposed image compressor maps into an APEX20KC EP20K600CB652-7 from Altera and uses 45% of the Logic Array Block (LAB) and 9% of the Embedded System Block (ESB). With a 33 MHz clock frequency, the proposed image compressor shows a speed of 67 fields per second (33 frames per second), which is more than real-time operation. The resulting image quality from reconstruction is approximately 28 dB in PSNR and its compression ratio is 29:1. Consequently, the proposed image compressor is expected to be used in a dedicated system requiring an image-processing unit.

This paper proposes the tile size conversion method for the wavelet image transcoding gateway and a set of methods to reduce the tile boundary artifacts caused by the conversion. In the wavelet image coding system represented by JPEG 2000, pictures are usually divided into one or more tiles and each tile is then transformed separately. On low memory terminals such as mobile terminals, some decoders are likely to have limits on what tile sizes they can decode. Assuming a system using these limited decoders, methods were investigated for converting the tile size quickly and automatically at the gateway when image data with a non-decodable tile size is received at the gateway from another system. Furthermore, tile boundary artifacts reduction methods are investigated. This paper verifies the validity of the proposed scheme by implementing it with a (5, 3) reversible filter and a (9, 7) irreversible filter. In addition, we implemented the tile size conversion gateway and evaluated the performance of the processing time. The results show the validity of the conversion gateway.

Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) systems, which utilize multiple antennas at both the receiver and transmitter, promise very high data rates in a rich scattering environment. It was proven in literature that with optimal power allocation, MIMO eigenmode transmission system (EMTS) is optimal because MIMO capacity is maximized. However, the performance of MIMO EMTS is very sensitive to the accuracy of channel state information and thus it is of practical importance to analyze its performance when channel state information is corrupted under realistic system and propagation conditions. In this paper, we lower bound the mutual information of MIMO EMTS with imperfect channel estimation and delayed quantized feedback in a spatially correlated continuous fading channel. Our results showed that this lower bound is tight and can serve as a comprehensive guide to the actual performance of MIMO EMTS under practical operating conditions.
