Phase performance in a temperature sensor using a conventional single-mode step-index fiber is studied. Two modes are excited in a so called single-mode fiber when the wavelength of a laser source is shorter than the one suggested by the specification of a fiber. The phase shift due to the temperature change of a step-index fiber is analyzed. The intensity fluctuation by the interference of two modes is observed in the experiment and estimated in the computer simulation.

This study investigates the effect of the method of time division in frequency domain ICA on estimation accuracy of ICA. We show that source signals expressed in the frequency domain lose non-Gaussianity and independence because of the long and overlapping window function, respectively, in time division. Consequently, the estimation accuracy of ICA decreases.

Digital cinema will continue, for some time, to use image signals converted from the density values of film stock through some form of digitization. This paper investigates the required numbers of quantization bits for both intensity and density. Equations for the color differences created by quantization distortion are derived on the premise that the uniform color space L* a* b* can be used to evaluate color differences in digitized pictorial color images. The location of the quantized sample that yields the maximum color difference in the color gamut is theoretically analyzed with the proviso that the color difference must be below the perceivable limit of human visual systems. The result shows that the maximum color difference is located on a ridge line or a surface of the color gamut. This can reduce the computational burden for determining the required precision for color quantization. Design examples of quantization resolution are also shown by applying the proposed evaluation method to three actual color spaces: NTSC, HDTV, and ROMM.

An efficient data transmission interface for VLSI systems, Multi-Bit Parallel Code Division Multiple Access (MB/P-CDMA) interface, has been designed with 0.35 µm CMOS technology. The proposed interface achieves 1.12 Gb/s data rate (80 MHz, 8 bit bus) using multi-bit transmission at each clock per transmitter. The proposed CDMA interface ensures higher speed operation than conventional interface even in noisy environments. Each of the transmitters and receivers occupies the die area of 290 360 µm2 and 240 280 µm2, respectively.

Spectral-amplitude coding (SAC) techniques in fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG)-based optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) systems were investigated in our previous work. This paper adopts the same network architecture to investigate the simultaneous reductions of multiple-access interference (MAI) and optical beat interference (OBI). The MAI is caused by overlapping wavelengths from undesired network coder/decoders (codecs) while the OBI is induced by interaction of simultaneous chips at adjacent gratings. It is proposed that MAI and OBI reductions may be obtained by use of: 1) a source spectrum that is divided into equal chip spacing; 2) coded FBGs characterized by approximately the same number of "0" and "1" code elements; and 3) spectrally balanced photo-detectors. With quasi-orthogonal Walsh-Hadamard coded FBGs, complementary spectral chips is employed as signal pairs to be recombined and detected in balanced photo-detectors, thus achieving simultaneous suppression of both MAIs and OBIs. Simulation results showed that the proposed OCDMA spectral-amplitude coding scheme achieves significant MAI and OBI reductions.

Direct digital frequency synthesizers (DDFS) provide fast frequency switching with high spectral purity and are widely used in modern spread spectrum wireless communication systems. ROM-based DDFS uses a ROM lookup table to store the amplitude of a sine wave. A large ROM table is required for high spectral purity. However, a larger ROM uses more area and consumes more power. Several ROM compression methods, including Sunderland technique based on simple trigonometric identities and quantization & error compensation techniques, have been reported. In this paper, we suggest several new techniques to reduce the ROM size. One new technique uses more number of hierarchical levels in ROM structures. Another technique uses simple interpolation techniques combined with hierarchical ROM structures. Experimental results show that the new proposed techniques can reduce the required ROM size up to 24%, when compared to that of a resent approach.

We introduce an inheritance concept into a specification method of a concurrent system in order to reuse and refine existing specifications. Reusability by inheritance is emphasized in this paper. We take multiple inheritance to enable to reuse several specifications at a time. An upper specification can be skillfully reused by dividing inherited parts and non-inherited ones if the specification contains unnecessary parts for a lower specification. As an application, we specify the FIPA contract net interaction protocol (IP) with the function of an agent authentication. This is accomplished by using multiple inheritance. We also specify the FIPA iterated contract net IP by reusing the FIPA contract net IP. We have been developing a validation support tool for specifications described with the proposed method.

We propose a novel hierarchical transmission method of DCT coefficients using multi-code DS/SS modulation. For low resolution image transmission over noisy channel, an error resilient and graceful degradation technique is necessary. Here, the DCT coefficients are divided into each stratum (a branch of multi-code DS/SS) and transmitted simultaneously through a noisy channel. By assigning an appropriate transmission energy that corresponds to their source energy variances, energy assignment, it is possible to maintain picture quality effectively even in a noisy channel. Analysis of this method was performed using an image data model, 2-D Gauss-Markov random field, which showed that picture quality is maintained even in the noisy channel condition.

In this paper, we propose a formal method for detection of three automation surprises in human-machine interaction; a mode confusion, a refusal state, and a blocking state. The mode confusion arises when a machine is in a different mode from that anticipated by the user, and is the most famous automation surprise. The refusal state is a situation that the machine does not respond to a command the user executes. The blocking state is a situation where an internal event occurs, leading to change of an interface the user does not know. In order to detect these phenomena, we propose a composite model in which a machine and a user model evolve concurrently. We show that the detection of these phenomena in human-machine interaction can be reduced to a reachability problem in the composite model.

Masqueraders who impersonate other users pose serious threat to computer security. Unfortunately, firewalls or misuse-based intrusion detection systems are generally ineffective in detecting masqueraders. Anomaly detection techniques have been proposed as a complementary approach to overcome such limitations. However, they are not accurate enough in detection, and the rate of false alarm is too high for the technique to be applied in practice. For example, recent empirical studies on masquerade detection using UNIX commands found the accuracy to be below 70%. In this research, we performed a comparative study to investigate the effectiveness of SVM (Support Vector Machine) technique using the same data set and configuration reported in the previous experiments. In order to improve accuracy of masquerade detection, we used command frequencies in sliding windows as feature sets. In addition, we chose to ignore commands commonly used by all the users and introduce the concept of voting engine. Though still imperfect, we were able to improve the accuracy of masquerade detection to 80.1% and 94.8%, whereas previous studies reported accuracy of 69.3% and 62.8% in the same configurations. This study convincingly demonstrates that SVM is useful as an anomaly detection technique and that there are several advantages SVM offers as a tool to detect masqueraders.

Wavelet packet modulation (WPM) using the discrete wavelet transform is a multiplexing transmission method in which data is assigned to wavelet subbands having different time and frequency resolutions. The WPM keeps data transmission throughput even in tone and impulse interference environments that cannot be achieved with conventional multiplexing methods such as TDM (Time division multiplexing) or OFDM (Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing). In this paper, we propose an effective multicarrier transmission method of WPM for wireless mobile communications. First, the transmission characteristics of WPM in fading environments are minutely investigated. Then, taking the advantage of the WPM and the OFDM that has an equalizing technique in multipath fading environments, we propose a multimode transmission method using them. The adaptive transmission in those fading and interference environments is achieved by using the multimode transmission. Their transmission performances are evaluated by computer simulations.

Recently, a cluster map based blind RBF equalizer (CM-BRE) has been proposed. By utilizing the underlying structure characteristics of RBF equalizer, the CM-BRE can be implemented by the combination of neural-gas algorithm (NGA) with several sorting operations. Although the CM-BRE is able to achieve almost identical performance with the optimal RBF equalizer, the high computational load mainly caused by NGA limits it's application. In this paper, we propose a downsizing method that employs the inter-relation among RBF centers and significantly reduces the NGA's computational load. Furthermore, a method to determine the feedback vector is derived, then CM-BRE is extended to a cluster map based blind RBF decision feedback equalizer (CM-BRDFE). The proposed CM-BRDFE also shows the close performance with the optimal RBF decision feedback equalizer in simulations.

This paper theoretically evaluates the performance of overlapping pulse-position modulation (OPPM) fiber-optic code-division multiple-access (FO-CDMA) systems in the presence of code synchronization errors. The analysis is carried out with a constraint on throughput-pulsewidth product. Discussions on effects of various system parameters, such as timing offset, index of overlap, number of users, are presented. The results show that the OPPM FO-CDMA systems with high index of overlaps have better resistance against imperfect synchronization. In fact, the acceptable performance could be maintained even with timing offsets of up to 30% of chip pulsewidth. On the other hand, strict code synchronization is necessarily required, preferably within a half code chip pulsewidth.

This paper discusses the implementation of multi-band digital intermediate frequency (IF) for wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) transceiver. The majority of the implemented module in hardware is composed of wideband analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), digital-to-analog converters (DACs), and field programmable-gated-arrays (FPGA). And in software, it is coded by VHSIC hardware description language (VHDL) for realizing digital filters and numerically controlled oscillator, etc. To cope with the hardware limitation such as the number of gates in FPGA, the overall digital filter embedded in transceiver is constructed via a cascading a series of decimation and interpolation filters. At transmitter, in order to upconvert the multi-band baseband channels simultaneously, two-stage digital complex quadrature modulation (DCQM) is utilized. The relevant up-and-down conversion of the numerically controlled oscillator (NCO) is designed in the form of a look-up-table (LUT), having samples associated with a sampled sinusoidal with period of 1/4. At receiver, to avoid the usage of surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter, the high-performance digital filter is implemented subject to satisfying band rejection ratio prescribed in blocker and adjacent channel specification. This paper provides the performance of the implemented digital IF module by revealing the results taken from the measurement instruments. Moreover, to confirm its validity computer simulations are simultaneously conducted.

For an efficient software download in cellular CDMA systems, location dependant session admission control (LDSAC) is presented. In the LDSAC scheme, a mobile that is located near cell center can request software download session, but the mobile that is located far from cell center can request session only after approaching near the cell center. Performance is analyzed in terms of handoff rate, mean channel holding time, session blocking probability and handoff forced termination probability. Numerical results show handoff rate between cells in the proposed scheme is reduced to 30-250% compared to conventional scheme, according to traffic characteristics such as terminal speed, session duration time and the size of the allowable zone area in a cell for the initiation of the session. And new session blocking probability decreases slightly, but handoff session forced termination probability decreases drastically.

We propose in this paper the integrated power and admission control (IPAC) algorithm for multimedia CDMA wireless networks. The distributed power control with partial power assignment (DPC-PPA) algorithm, which can speed up the process in finding a feasible power set, is chosen as the power control algorithm for the IPAC algorithm. We prove that given a feasible configuration, the power set of the DPC-PPA algorithm will converge to a feasible power set which achieves equality in a set of linear equations. After a pre-specified number of iterations of power control, if the QoS requirements are not all satisfied, the IPAC algorithm uses the admission control procedure to reduce the outage probability. We derive an admission criterion, which gives a necessary and sufficient condition for a group of users to be admissible for the network, for the admission control procedure. Furthermore, we also found from simulation results that the IPAC algorithm results in smaller outage probability than the distributed power control algorithms without admission control.

The operation of a polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensator using a polarizer and a Faraday rotator-based polarization controller (FRPC) is analyzed in detail, and the compensation performance is experimentally evaluated in 40 Gbit/s operation. The evaluation results show that a wide range of differential group delay over a bit period can almost be completely compensated using the PMD compensator. The characteristics of electrical spectrum-based signal monitoring methods are investigated in detail, and the results shows advantages of a low frequency band monitoring method that produces about double the wider dynamic range than a fundamental repetition frequency monitoring method. The automated PMD compensator using a polarizer and a FRPC driven by the low frequency band monitoring method is experimentally investigated using a terrestrial 40 Gbit/s wavelength division multiplexing system involving 350-km installed single-mode fibers. The PMD compensator produces highly stable signal performance in the field environment for a long term and reduces the standard deviation of the Q-factor distribution.
