  • Hybrid Recovery-Based Intrusion Tolerant System for Practical Cyber-Defense

    Due to the periodic recovery of virtual machines regardless of whether malicious intrusions exist, proactive recovery-based Intrusion Tolerant Systems (ITSs) are being considered for mission-critical applications. However, the virtual replicas can easily be exposed to attacks during their working period, and additionally, proactive recovery-based ITSs are ineffective in eliminating the vulnerability of exposure time, which is closely related to service availability. To address these problems, we propose a novel hybrid recovery-based ITS in this paper. The proposed method utilizes availability-driven recovery and dynamic cluster resizing. The availability-driven recovery method operates the recovery process by both proactive and reactive ways for the system to gain shorter exposure times and higher success rates. The dynamic cluster resizing method reduces the overhead of the system that occurs from dynamic workload fluctuations. The performance of the proposed ITS with various synthetic and real workloads using CloudSim showed that it guarantees higher availability and reliability of the system, even under malicious intrusions such as DDoS attacks.

    Coordinated Multi-point (CoMP) transmission has long been known for its ability to improve cell edge throughput. However, in a CoMP cellular network, fixed CoMP clustering results in cluster edges where system performance degrades due to non-coordinated clusters. To solve this problem, conventional studies proposed dynamic clustering schemes. However, such schemes require a complex backhaul topology and are infeasible with current network technologies. In this paper, small power base stations (BSs) are introduced instead of dynamic clustering to solve the cluster edge problem in CoMP cellular networks. This new cell topology is called the diamond cellular network since the resultant cell structure looks like a diamond pattern. In our novel cell topology, we derive the optimal locations of small power base stations and the optimal resource allocation between the CoMP base station and small power base stations to maximize the proportional fair utility function. By using the proposed architecture, in the case of perfect user scheduling, a more than 150% improvement in 5% outage throughput is achieved, and in the case of successive proportional fair user scheduling, nearly 100% improvement of 5% outage throughput is achieved compared with conventional single cell networks.

    This paper claims to use a new question expansion method for question classification in cQA services. The input questions consist of only a question whereas training data do a pair of question and answer. Thus they cannot provide enough information for good classification in many cases. Since the answer is strongly associated with the input questions, we try to create a pseudo answer to expand each input question. Translation probabilities between questions and answers and a pseudo relevant feedback technique are used to generate the pseudo answer. As a result, we obtain the significant improved performances when two approaches are effectively combined.

    In the field of education such as elementary and middle schools, teachers want to take care of schoolchildren during physical trainings and after-school club activities. On the other hand, in the field of sports such as professional and national-level sports, physical or technical trainers want to manage the health, physical and physiological conditions of athletes during exercise trainings in the grounds. In this way, it is required to monitor vital signs for persons during exercises, however, there are several technical problems to be solved in its realization. In this paper, we present the importance and necessity of vital monitoring for persons during exercises, and to make it possible periodically, reliably and in real-time, we present the solutions which we have so far worked out and point out remaining technical challenges in terms of vital/physical sensing, wireless transmission and human interface.

    Change-aware development environments can automatically record fine-grained code changes on a program and allow programmers to replay the recorded changes in chronological order. However, since they do not always need to replay all the code changes to investigate how a particular entity of the program has been changed, they often eliminate several code changes of no interest by manually skipping them in replaying. This skipping action is an obstacle that makes many programmers hesitate when they use existing replaying tools. This paper proposes a slicing mechanism that automatically removes manually skipped code changes from the whole history of past code changes and extracts only those necessary to build a particular class member of a Java program. In this mechanism, fine-grained code changes are represented by edit operations recorded on the source code of a program and dependencies among edit operations are formalized. The paper also presents a running tool that slices the operation history and replays its resulting slices. With this tool, programmers can avoid replaying nonessential edit operations for the construction of class members that they want to understand. Experimental results show that the tool offered improvements over conventional replaying tools with respect to the reduction of the number of edit operations needed to be examined and over history filtering tools with respect to the accuracy of edit operations to be replayed.

    An ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) scheme based on combined post-processing signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (PSINR) is proposed for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with retransmission. For the OSIC procedures at the current transmission round, instead of reusing the PSINRs and decision statistics calculated for the previous transmission rounds, the proposed OSIC scheme newly calculates the combined PSINRs and combined decision statistics from the available receive signal vectors and channel matrices at every retransmission. Therefore, the proposed OSIC scheme utilizes all receive signal vectors and channel matrices obtained up to the current transmission round during the OSIC procedures. A low-complexity version of the proposed OSIC scheme is also proposed, and the low-complexity version recalculates the combined PSINRs and combined decision statistics from part of the available receive signal vectors and channel matrices. Simulation results verify that the proposed schemes achieve significantly better error performance than existing OSIC schemes based on the detection and combining process for MIMO systems with retransmission.

    Many selected mapping (SLM) schemes have been proposed to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal sequences. In this paper, an efficient selection (ES) method of the OFDM signal sequence with minimum PAPR among many alternative OFDM signal sequences is proposed; it supports various SLM schemes. Utilizing the fact that OFDM signal components can be sequentially generated in many SLM schemes, the generation and PAPR observation of the OFDM signal sequence are processed concurrently. While the u-th alternative OFDM signal components are being generated, by applying the proposed ES method, the generation of that alternative OFDM signal components can be interrupted (or stopped) according to the selection criteria of the best OFDM signal sequence in the considered SLM scheme. Such interruption substantially reduces the average computational complexity of SLM schemes without degradation of PAPR reduction performance, which is confirmed by analytical and numerical results. Note that the proposed method is not an isolated SLM scheme but a subsidiary method which can be easily adopted in many SLM schemes in order to further reduce the computational complexity of considered SLM schemes.

    A connector model expressed as an inductance is proposed for use in a previously reported common-mode antenna model. The common-mode antenna model is an equivalent model for estimating only common-mode radiation from a printed circuit board (PCB) more quickly and with less computational resources than a calculation method that fully divides the entire structure of the PCB into elemental cells, such as narrow signal traces and thin dielectric layers. Although the common-mode antenna model can estimate the amount of radiation on the basis of the pin configuration of the connector between two PCBs, the calculation results do not show the peak frequency shift in the radiation spectrum when there is a change in the pin configuration. A previous study suggested that the frequency shift depends on the total inductance of the connector, which led to the development of the connector model reported here, which takes into account the effective inductance of the connector. The common-mode antenna model with the developed connector model accurately simulates the peak frequency shift caused by a change in the connector pin configuration. The results agree well with measured spectra (error of 3 dB).

    Negative electron affinity (NEA) surfaces can be formed by alternating supply of alkali metals (e.g. Cs, Rb, K) and oxygen on semiconductor surfaces. We have studied adsorption structures of Cs on an As-terminated (2×4) (001) GaAs surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We found that the initial adsorption of Cs atoms occurs around the step sites in the form of Cs clusters and that the size of clusters is reduced by successive exposure to O2, indicating that As-terminated (2×4) surfaces are relatively stable compared to Ga-terminated surfaces and are not broken by the Cs clusters adsorption.

    Quantum efficiency (QE) evolution by several negative electron affinity (NEA) activation process for p-doped GaAs(100) specimen has been studied. We have carried out the surface pretreatment at 580°C or 480°C and the successive NEA activation process at room temperature (R.T.). When the NEA surface was degraded, the surface was refreshed by above pretreatment and activation process, and approximately 0.10 of QE was repeatedly obtained. It was found that the higher QE of 0.13 was achieved with the reduced pretreatment temperature at 480°C with the specific experimental conditions. This is probably caused by the residual Cs-related compounds playing an important role of the electron emission. In addition, after the multiple pretreatment and activation sequence, surface morphology of GaAs remarkably changed.

    The optical properties of arrays of nanoholes and nanoslits in Al films were investigated both numerically and experimentally. The choice of Al was based on its low cost and ease of processing, in addition to the fact that it has a higher plasma frequency than gold or silver, leading to lower optical losses at wavelengths of 400 to 500nm.

  • A High-Speed Column-Parallel Time-Digital Single-Slope ADC for CMOS Image Sensors

    This letter presents a new time-digital single-slope ADC (TDSS) architecture for CMOS image sensors. In the proposed ADC, a conventional single-slope ADC is used in coarse phase and a time to digital convertor is employed in fine phase. Through second comparison of the two different slope voltages (discharge input voltage and ramp voltage), the proposed ADC achieves low bit precision compensation. Compared with multiple-ramp single-slope (MRSS) ADC, the proposed ADC not only has a simple digital judgment circuit, but also increases conversion speed without complicated structure of ramp generator. A 10-bit TDSS ADC consisting of 7-bit conventional single-slope ADC and 3-bit time to digital converter was realized in a 0.13µm CIS process. Simulations demonstrate that the conversion speed of a TDSS ADC is almost 3.5 times faster than that of a single-slope ADC.

    This paper gives an array-based practical encoder for the lossless data compression algorithm known as Compression by Substring Enumeration (CSE). The encoder makes use of the relation between CSE and the Burrows-Wheeler transform. We also modify the decoding algorithm to accommodate to the proposed encoder. Thanks to the proposed encoder and decoder, we can apply CSE to long data of more than tens of megabytes. We show compression results obtained when we perform experiments on such long data. The results empirically validate theoretical predictions on CSE.

    It is known that in the selected mapping (SLM) scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), correlation (CORR) metric outperforms the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) metric in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance. It is also well known that four times oversampling is used for estimating the PAPR performance of continuous OFDM signal. In this paper, the oversampling effect of OFDM signal is analyzed when CORR metric is used for the SLM scheme in the presence of nonlinear high power amplifier. An analysis based on the correlation coefficients of the oversampled OFDM signals shows that CORR metric of two times oversampling in the SLM scheme is good enough to achieve the same BER performance as four times and 16 times oversampling cases. Simulation results confirm that for the SLM scheme using CORR metric, the BER performance for two times oversampling case is almost the same as that for four and 16 times oversampling cases.

    In this paper, we propose a communication-efficient top-k continuous query processing method on distributed local nodes where data are horizontally partitioned. A designated coordinator server takes the role of issuing queries from users to local nodes and delivering the results to users. The final results are requested via a top-k subscription which lets local nodes know which data and updates need to be returned to users. Our proposed method makes use of the active previously posed queries to identify a small set of needed top-k subscriptions. In addition, with the pre-indexed nodes' skylines, the number of local nodes to be subscribed can be significantly reduced. As a result, only a small number of subscriptions are informed to a small number of local nodes resulting in lower communication overhead. Furthermore, according to dynamic data updates, we also propose a method that prevents nodes from reporting needless updates and also maintenance procedures to preserve the consistency. The results of experiments that measure the volume of transferred data show that our proposed method significantly outperforms the previously proposed methods.

  • A Tightly-Secure Multisignature Scheme with Improved Verification

    A multisignature (MS) scheme enables a group of signers to produce a compact signature on a common message. In analyzing security of MS schemes, a key registration protocol with proof-of-possession (POP) is considered to prevent rogue key attacks. In this paper, we refine the POP-based security model by formalizing a new strengthened POP model and showing relations between the previous POP models and the new one. We next suggest a MS scheme that achieves: (1) non-interactive signing process, (2) O(1) pairing computations in verification, (3) tight security reduction under the co-CDH assumption, and (4) security under the new strengthened POP model. Compared to the tightly-secure BNN-MS scheme, the verification in ours can be at least 7 times faster at the 80-bit security level and 10 times faster at the 128-bit security level. To achieve our goal, we introduce a novel and simple POP generation method that can be viewed as a one-time signature without random oracles. Our POP technique can also be applied to the LOSSW-MS scheme (without random oracles), giving the security in the strengthened POP model.

    Bag of Visual Words (BoVW) is an effective framework for image retrieval. Query expansion (QE) further boosts retrieval performance by refining a query with relevant visual words found from the geometric consistency check between the query image and highly ranked retrieved images obtained from the first round of retrieval. Since QE checks the pairwise consistency between query and highly ranked images, its performance may deteriorate when there are slight degradations in the query image. We propose Query Bootstrapping as a variant of QE to circumvent this problem by using the consistency of highly ranked images instead of pairwise consistency. In so doing, we regard frequently co-occurring visual words in highly ranked images as relevant visual words. Frequent itemset mining (FIM) is used to find such visual words efficiently. However, the FIM-based approach requires sensitive parameters to be fine-tuned, namely, support (min/max-support) and the number of top ranked images (top-k). Here, we propose an adaptive support algorithm that adaptively determines both the minimum support and maximum support by referring to the first round's retrieval list. Selecting relevant images by using a geometric consistency check further boosts retrieval performance by reducing outlier images from a mining process. An important parameter for the LO-RANSAC algorithm that is used for the geometric consistency check, namely, inlier threshold, is automatically determined by our algorithm. We further introduce tf-fi-idf on top of tf-idf in order to take into account the frequency of inliers (fi) in the retrieved images. We evaluated the performance of QB in terms of mean average precision (mAP) on three benchmark datasets and found that it gave significant performance boosts of 5.37%, 9.65%, and 8.52% over that of state-of-the-art QE on Oxford 5k, Oxford 105k, and Paris 6k, respectively.

    The new generation of telemedicine systems enables healthcare service providers to monitor patients not only in the hospital but also when they are at home. In order to efficiently exploit these systems, human information collected from end devices must be sent to the medical center through reliable data transmission. In this paper, we propose an adaptive relay transmission scheme to improve the reliability of data transmission for wireless body area networks. In our proposal, relay nodes that have successfully decoded a packet from the source node are selected as relay nodes in which the best relay with the highest channel gain is selected to forward the failed packet instead of the source node. The scheme addresses both the data collision problem and the inefficient relay selection in relay transmission. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme provides a better performance than previous works in terms of the packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay.

    Tag collision has a negative impact on the performance of RFID systems. In this letter, we propose an algorithm termed anti-collision protocol based on improved collision detection (ACP-ICD). In this protocol, dual prefixes matching and collision bit detection technique are employed to reduce the number of queries and promptly identify tags. According to the dual prefixes matching method and collision bit detection in the process of collision arbitration, idle slots are eliminated. Moreover, the reader makes full use of collision to improve identification efficiency. Both analytical and simulation results are presented to show that the performance of ACP-ICD outperforms existing anti-collision algorithms.

    Recent small cube satellites use higher frequency bands such as Ku-band for higher throughput communications. This requires high-frequency link in an earth radio station as well. As one of the solutions, we propose usage of bidirectional radio-on-fiber link employing a wavelength multiplexing scheme. It was numerically shown that the response linearity of the electro-absorption modulator integrated laser (EML) is sufficient and that the spurious emissions are lower enough or can be reduced by the radio-frequency filters. From the frequency response and the single-sideband phase noise measurements, the EML was proved to be used in a radio-on-fiber system of the cube satellite earth station.
