In this paper, the differences in navigation information design, which is important for kiosk-type pedestrian navigation systems, were experimentally examined depending on presence or absence of carriable navigation information in order to acquire the knowledge to contribute design guidelines of kiosk-type pedestrian navigation systems. In particular, we used route complexity information calculated using a regression equation that contained multiple factors. In the absence of carriable navigation information, both the destination arrival rate and route deviation rate improved. Easy routes were designed as M (17 to 39 characters in Japanese), while complicated routes were denoted as L (40 or more characters in Japanese). On the contrary, in the presence of carriable navigation information, the user's memory load was found to be reduced by carrying the same navigation information as kiosk-type terminals. Thus, the reconsideration of kiosk-type pedestrian navigation systems design, e.g., the means of presenting navigation information, is required. For example, if the system attaches importance to a high destination arrival rate, L_Carrying without regard to route complexity is better. If the system attaching importance to the low route deviation rate, M_Carrying in the case of easy routes and L_Carrying in the case of complicated routes have been better. Consequently, this paper presents the differences in the designs of pedestrian navigation systems depending on whether carriable navigation information is absent or present.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the latest coding standard. Compared with Advanced Video coding (H.264/AVC), HEVC offers about a 50% bitrate reduction at the same reconstructed video quality. However, this new coding standard leads to enormous computational complexity, which makes it difficult to encode video in real time. Therefore, in this paper, aiming at the high complexity of intra coding in HEVC, a new fast coding unit (CU) splitting algorithm is proposed based on the decision tree. Decision tree, as a method of machine learning, can be designed to determine the size of CUs adaptively. Here, two significant features, Just Noticeable Difference (JND) values and coding bits of each CU can be extracted to train the decision tree, according to their relationships with the CUs' partitions. The experimental results have revealed that the proposed algorithm can save about 34% of time, on average, with only a small increase of BD-rate under the “All_Intra” setting, compared with the HEVC reference software.

Improvement of conventional networks with an incremental approach is an important design method for the development of the future internet. For this approach, we are developing a future aggregation network based on passive optical network (PON) technology to achieve both cost-effectiveness and high reliability. In this paper, we propose a timeslot (TS) synchronization method for sharing a TS from an optical burst mode transceiver between any route of arbitrary fiber length by changing both the route of the TS transmission and the TS control timing on the optical burst mode transceiver. We show the effectiveness of the proposed method for exchanging TSs in bidirectional bufferless wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and time division multiplexing (TDM) multi-ring networks under the condition of the occurrence of a link failure through prototype systems. Also, we evaluate the reduction of the required number of optical interfaces in a multi-ring network by applying the proposed method.

The transmission on fronthaul links in the cloud radio access network has become a bottleneck with the increasing data rate. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stage compression scheme for fronthaul links. In the first stage, the commonly used techniques like cyclic prefix stripping and sampling rate adaptation are implemented. In the second stage, a structure called linear prediction coding with decision threshold (LPC-DT) is proposed to remove the redundancies of signal. Considering that the linear prediction outputs have large dynamic range, a two-piecewise quantization with optimized decision threshold is applied to enhance the quantization performance. In order to further lower the transmission rate, a multi-level successive structure of lossless polar source coding is proposed to compress the quantization output with low encoding and decoding complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme with LPC-DT and LPSC offers not only significantly better compression ratios but also more flexibility in bandwidth settings compared with traditional ones.

High Efficiency Video Coding is a new video coding standard after H.264/AVC. By introducing a flexible coding unit, which can be recursively divided from 64×64 to 8×8 blocks in a Quadtree-Structure, HEVC achieves significantly higher coding efficiency than the previous standards. With the flexible CU structure, HEVC can effectively adapt to highly varying contents with a smaller CU or to flat contents with a larger CU, making it suitable for applications from mobile video to super high definition television. On the other hand, CU division does incur high computational cost for HEVC. In this paper, we propose a simple and fast CU division algorithm by using only a subset of pixels to determine when CU division happens. Experiment results show that our algorithm can achieve prediction quality close to HEVC Test Model with much lower computational cost.

In this paper, Epitaxial (Epi) Junction Termination Extension (JTE) technique for silicon carbide (SiC) power device is presented. Unlike conventional JTE, the Epi-JTE doesn't require high temperature (about 500°C) implantation process. Thus, it doesn't require high temperature (about 1700°C) process for implanted dose activation and surface defect curing. Therefore, the manufacturing cost will be decreased. Also, the fabrication process is very simple because the dose of the JTE is controlled by epitaxy growth. The blocking characteristic is analyzed through 2D-simulation for the proposed Epi-JTE. In addition, the effect was validated by experiment of fabricated SiC device with the Single-Zone-Epi-JTE. As a result, it has blocking capability of 79.4% compared to ideal parallel-plane junction breakdown.

As a hot topic of speech signal processing, speech emotion recognition methods have been developed rapidly in recent years. Some satisfactory results have been achieved. However, it should be noted that most of these methods are trained and evaluated on the same corpus. In reality, the training data and testing data are often collected from different corpora, and the feature distributions of different datasets often follow different distributions. These discrepancies will greatly affect the recognition performance. To tackle this problem, a novel corpus-invariant discriminant feature representation algorithm, called transfer discriminant analysis (TDA), is presented for speech emotion recognition. The basic idea of TDA is to integrate the kernel LDA algorithm and the similarity measurement of distributions into one objective function. Experimental results under the cross-corpus conditions show that our proposed method can significantly improve the recognition rates.

This paper proposes a null-space expansion scheme for multiuser massive MIMO transmission in order to suppress inter-user interference (IUI) triggered by the temporal variation of the channel. The downlink multiuser MIMO channel capacity of time varying channels is severely degraded since IUI must be suppressed at the transmitter side by using past estimated channel state information at the transmitter side (CSIT). Massive MIMO has emerged as one of the most promising technologies for further capacity enhancement by increasing the number of base station (BS) antenna elements. Exploiting the excess degrees of freedom (DoFs) inherent in massive MIMO, a BS with the proposed IUI suppression scheme performs multiple null-steering for each UE (User Equipment) antenna element, which expands the null-space dimension. Computer simulations show that the proposed scheme has superior IUI suppression performance to the existing channel prediction scheme in time varying channels.

An output voltage-current equation of charge pump DC-DC voltage multiplier using diodes is provided to cover wide clock frequency and output current ranges for designing energy harvester operating at a near-threshold voltage or in sub-threshold region. Equivalent circuits in slow and fast switching limits are extracted. The effective threshold voltage of the diode in slow switching limit is also derived as a function of electrical characteristics of the diodes, such as the saturation current and voltage slope parameter, and design parameters such as the number of stages, capacitance per stage, parasitic capacitance at the top plate of the main boosting capacitor, and the clock frequency. The model is verified compared with SPICE simulation.

Significant challenges in ball tracking of sports analysis by computer vision technology are: 1) accuracy of estimated 3D ball trajectory under difficult conditions; 2) external forces added by players lead to irregular motions of the ball; 3) unpredictable situations in the real game, i.e. the ball occluded by players and other objects, complex background and changing lighting condition. With the goal of multi-view 3D ball tracking, this paper proposes an abrupt motion adaptive system model, an anti-occlusion observation model, and a spatial density-based automatic recovery based on particle filter. The system model combines two different system noises that cover the motion of the ball both in general situation and situation subject to abrupt motion caused by external force. Combination ratio of these two noises and number of particles are adaptive to the estimated motion by weight distribution of particles. The anti-occlusion observation model evaluates image feature of each camera and eliminates influence of the camera with less confidence. The spatial density, which is calculated based on 3D ball candidates filtered out by spatial homographic relationship between cameras, is proposed for generating new set of particles to recover the tracking when tracking failure is detected. Experimental results based on HDTV video sequences (2014 Inter High School Men's Volleyball Games, Japan), which were captured by four cameras located at each corner of the court, show that the success rate achieved by the proposals of 3D ball tracking is 99.42%.

The paper presents a small reversible language R-CORE, a structured imperative programming language with symbolic tree-structured data (S-expressions). The language is reduced to the core of a reversible language, with a single command for reversibly updating the store, a single reversible control-flow operator, a limited number of variables, and data with a single atom and a single constructor. Despite its extreme simplicity, the language is reversibly universal, which means that it is as powerful as any reversible language can be, while it is linear-time self-interpretable, and it allows reversible programming with dynamic data structures. The four-line program inverter for R-CORE is among the shortest existing program inverters, which demonstrates the conciseness of the language. The translator to R-CORE, which is used to show the formal properties of the language, is clean and modular, and it may serve as a model for related reversible translation problems. The goal is to provide a language that is sufficiently concise for theoretical investigations. Owing to its simplicity, the language may also be used for educational purposes.

This paper describes a logarithmic compression ADC using a subranging TDC and the transient response of a comparator. We utilized the settling time of the comparator for a logarithmic compression instead of a logarithmic amplifier. The settling time of the comparator is inversely proportional to the logarithm of an input voltage. In the proposed ADC, an input voltage is converted into a pulse whose width represents the settling time of the comparator. Subsequently, the TDC converts the pulse width into a binary code. The supply voltage of the proposed ADC can be reduced more than a conventional logarithmic ADC because an analog to digital conversion takes place in the time domain. We confirmed through a 0.18-µm CMOS circuit simulation that the proposed ADC achieves a resolution of 11 bits, a sampling rate of 20 MS/s, a dynamic range of 59 dB and a power consumption of 9.8 mW at 1.5 V operation.

This paper studies a novel iterative detection algorithm for data detection in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems in the presence of phase noise (PHN) and channel estimation errors. By simplifying the maximum a posteriori algorithm based on the theory of variational inference, an optimization problem over variational free energy is formulated. After that, the estimation of data, PHN and channel state information is obtained jointly and iteratively. The simulations indicate the validity of this algorithm and show a better performance compared with the traditional schemes.

Microblog, especially twitter, has become an integral part of our daily life for searching latest news and events information. Due to the short length characteristics of tweets and frequent use of unconventional abbreviations, content-relevance based search cannot satisfy user's information need. Recent research has shown that considering temporal and contextual aspects in this regard has improved the retrieval performance significantly. In this paper, we focus on microblog retrieval, emphasizing the alleviation of the vocabulary mismatch, and the leverage of the temporal (e.g., recency and burst nature) and contextual characteristics of tweets. To address the temporal and contextual aspect of tweets, we propose new features based on query-tweet time, word embedding, and query-tweet sentiment correlation. We also introduce some popularity features to estimate the importance of a tweet. A three-stage query expansion technique is applied to improve the relevancy of tweets. Moreover, to determine the temporal and sentiment sensitivity of a query, we introduce query type determination techniques. After supervised feature selection, we apply random forest as a feature ranking method to estimate the importance of selected features. Then, we make use of ensemble of learning to rank (L2R) framework to estimate the relevance of query-tweet pair. We conducted experiments on TREC Microblog 2011 and 2012 test collections over the TREC Tweets2011 corpus. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method over the baseline and known related works in terms of precision at 30 (P@30), mean average precision (MAP), normalized discounted cumulative gain at 30 (NDCG@30), and R-precision (R-Prec) metrics.

In Twitter-like services, countless messages are being posted in real-time every second all around the world. Timely knowledge about what kinds of information are diffusing in social media is quite important. For example, in emergency situations such as earthquakes, users provide instant information on their situation through social media. The collective intelligence of social media is useful as a means of information detection complementary to conventional observation. We have developed a system for monitoring and analyzing information diffusion data in real-time by tracking retweeted tweets. A tweet retweeted by many users indicates that they find the content interesting and impactful. Analysts who use this system can find tweets retweeted by many users and identify the key people who are retweeted frequently by many users or who have retweeted tweets about particular topics. However, bursting situations occur when thousands of social media messages are suddenly posted simultaneously, and the lack of machine resources to handle such situations lowers the system's query performance. Since our system is designed to be used interactively in real-time by many analysts, waiting more than one second for a query results is simply not acceptable. To maintain an acceptable query performance, we propose a capacity control method for filtering incoming tweets using extra attribute information from tweets themselves. Conventionally, there is a trade-off between the query performance and the accuracy of the analysis results. We show that the query performance is improved by our proposed method and that our method is better than the existing methods in terms of maintaining query accuracy.

This paper presents the design and characterization of an E-band 16×16-slot monopulse array antenna with full-corporate-feed fabricated by the commercially available batch process of diffusion bonding of laminated copper plates. The antenna is multi-layered, and consists of vertically-interconnected radiating elements, a corporate-feed circuit and a comparator. It has four input ports for different excitations. Sum and difference beams in different cut-planes for monopulse operation can be generated. The antenna has a quasi-planar profile, and a total size of 13.31 λ0×13.31λ0×1.52λ0 (λ0 is the wavelength at the design frequency of 78.5GHz). The antenna demonstrates a wide operation bandwidth of 17.2 (70-87.2) GHz for VSWR < 2. At 78.5GHz: 1) for the sum beam, there is a 32.6-dBi realized gain (83% antenna efficiency) and a 33.3-dBi directivity (95% aperture efficiency); 2) for the difference beams in the E-, H-, 45°-, and 135°-planes, the null depths are -53.0, -58.0, -57.8, and -65.6dB, respectively. Across the full operation band where the sum main-beam and difference null are able to consistently point at the boresight, the antenna also demonstrates excellent performance in terms of high gain, high efficiency, high isolation, low cross-polarization, and distinguished monopulse capability.

This paper proposes a method for evaluating a physical gait motion based on a 3D human skeleton measured by a depth sensor. While similar methods measure and evaluate the motion of only a part of interest (e.g., knee), the proposed method comprehensively evaluates the motion of the full body. The gait motions with a variety of physical disabilities due to lesioned body parts are recorded and modeled in advance for gait anomaly detection. This detection is achieved by finding lesioned parts a set of pose features extracted from gait sequences. In experiments, the proposed features extracted from the full body allowed us to identify where a subject was injured with 83.1% accuracy by using the model optimized for the individual. The superiority of the full-body features was validated in in contrast to local features extracted from only a body part of interest (77.1% by lower-body features and 65% by upper-body features). Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed full-body features was also validated with single universal model used for all subjects; 55.2%, 44.7%, and 35.5% by the full-body, lower-body, and upper-body features, respectively.

In this letter, a novel mainlobe anti-jamming method via eigen-projection processing and covariance matrix reconstruction is proposed. The present work mainly focuses on two aspects: the first aspect is to obtain the eigenvector of the mainlobe interference accurately in order to form the eigen-projection matrix to suppress the mainlobe interference. The second aspect is to reconstruct the covariance matrix which is uesd to calculate the adaptive weight vector for forming an ideal beam pattern. Additionally, the self-null effect caused by the signal of interest and the sidelobe interferences elimination are also considered in the proposed method. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can suppress the mainlobe interference effectively and achieve a superior performance.

The diversity method has the a difficulty in terms of the price and complexity in a base station with multiple antennas. Thus, this problem may be resolved by using the cooperative scheme among the base stations and the proposed scheme increases that uses economically resource by using less feedback bits. Especially, if the coverage of many base stations is overlapped, the performance of the proposed scheme is improved. From the simulation results, the proposed scheme has the better performance compared to the conventional scheme in heterogeneous network.

We proposed to apply compressed sensing to realize information sharing of link quality for wireless mesh networks (WMNs) with grid topology. In this paper, we extend the link quality sharing method to be applied for WMNs with arbitrary topology. For arbitrary topology WMNs, we introduce a link quality matrix and a matrix formula for compressed sensing. By employing a diffusion wavelets basis, the link quality matrix is converted to its sparse equivalent. Based on the sparse matrix, information sharing is achieved by compressed sensing. In addition, we propose compressed transmission for arbitrary topology WMNs, in which only the compressed link quality information is transmitted. Experiments and simulations clarify that the proposed methods can reduce the amount of data transmitted for information sharing and maintain the quality of the shared information.
