    To provide a satellite communication system with high reliability for social infrastructure, building flexible beam adapting to change of communication traffic is necessary. Optical Beam Forming Network has the capability of broadband transmission and small light construction. However, in space environment, there are concerns that the reception efficiency is reduced by the relative phase error of receiving signal among antenna elements with temperature fluctuation. To prevent this, we control relative phase among received signals with optical phase locked loop. In this paper, we propose the active optical phased array system using multi dither heterodyning technique for receiving OBF, and present experimental results under temperature fluctuation. We evaluated the stability of relative phase among 3 elements for temperature fluctuation at multiplexer from -15 to 45, and checked the stability of PLL among 3 elements.

  • A Fully Canonical Bandpass Filter Design Using Microstrip Transversal Resonator Array Configuration

    This paper proposes a new and simple microstrip bandpass filter structure for the design of a fully canonical transversal array filter. The filter is constructed by the parallel arrangement of microstrip even- and odd-mode half-wavelength resonators. In this filter, transmission zeros (TZs) are not produced by cross couplings used in conventional filter designs, but by an intrinsic negative coupling of the odd-mode resonators having open ends with respect to the even-mode resonators with shorted ends. Thus, the control of the resonant frequency and the external Q factor of each resonator makes it possible to form both a specified passband and TZs. As an example, a fully canonical bandpass filter with 2-GHz center frequency, 6% bandwidth, and four TZs is synthesized with a coupling-matrix optimization, and its structural parameters are designed. The designed filter achieves a rapid roll-off and low-loss passband response, which can be confirmed numerically and experimentally.

  • Iterative Image Dehazing Using the Dark Channel Prior

    The dark channel prior (DCP)-based image dehazing method has been widely used for enhancing visibility of outdoor images. However, since the DCP-based method assumes that the minimum values within local patches of natural outdoor haze-free images are zero, underestimation of the transmission is inevitable when the assumption does not hold. In this letter, a novel iterative image dehazing algorithm is proposed to compensate for the underestimated transmission. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the dehazing performance by increasing the transmission estimation accuracy.

    This study presents a two-stage spoken term detection (STD) method that uses the same STD engine twice and a support vector machine (SVM)-based classifier to verify detected terms from the STD engine's output. In a front-end process, the STD engine is used to pre-index target spoken documents from a keyword list built from an automatic speech recognition result. The STD result includes a set of keywords and their detection intervals (positions) in the spoken documents. For keywords having competitive intervals, we rank them based on the STD matching cost and select the one having the longest duration among competitive detections. The selected keywords are registered in the pre-index. They are then used to train an SVM-based classifier. In a query term search process, a query term is searched by the same STD engine, and the output candidates are verified by the SVM-based classifier. Our proposed two-stage STD method with pre-indexing was evaluated using the NTCIR-10 SpokenDoc-2 STD task and it drastically outperformed the traditional STD method based on dynamic time warping and a confusion network-based index.

    In 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) LTE (Long Term Evolution) systems, when HARQ (Hybrid Automatic Repeat request) retransmission is invoked, the data at the transmitter are retransmitted randomly or sequentially regardless of their relationship to the wrongly decoded data. Such practice is inefficient since precious transmission resources will be spent to retransmit data that may be of no use in error correction at the receiver. This paper proposes an incremental redundancy HARQ scheme based on Error Position Estimating Coding (ePec) and LDPC (Low Density Parity Check Code) channel coding, which is called ePec-LDPC HARQ. The proposal is able to feedback the wrongly decoded code blocks within a specific MAC (Media Access Control) PDU (Protocol Data Unit) from the receiver. The transmitter gets the feedback information and then performs targeted retransmission. That is, only the data related to the wrongly decoded code blocks are retransmitted, which can improve the retransmission efficiency and thus reduce the retransmission overload. An enhanced incremental redundancy LDPC coding approach, called EIR-LDPC, together with a physical layer framing method, is developed to implement ePec-LDPC HARQ. Performance evaluations show that ePec-LDPC HARQ reduces the overall transmission resources by 15% compared to a conventional LDPC HARQ scheme. Moreover, the average retransmission times of each MAC PDU and the transmission delay are also reduced considerably.

    In this letter, fast intra mode decision algorithms for HEVC Screen Contents Coding (SCC) are proposed. HEVC SCC has been developed to efficiently code mixed contents consisting of natural video, graphics, and texts. Comparing to HEVC version 1, the SCC encoding complexity significantly increases due to the newly added intra block copy mode. To reduce the heavy encoding complexity, the evaluation orders of multiple intra modes are rearranged and several early termination schemes based on intermediate coding information are developed. Based on our evaluation, it is found that the proposed method can achieve encoding time reduction of 13∼30% with marginal coding gain or loss, compared with HEVC SCC test model 2.0 in all intra (AI) case.

  • Color Error Diffusion Based on Neugebauer Model

    In this paper, we propose a method for color error diffusion based on the Neugebauer model for color halftone printing. The Neugebauer model expresses an arbitrary color as a trilinear interpolation of basic colors. The proposed method quantizes the color of each pixel to a basic color which minimizes an accumulated quantization error, and the quantization error is diffused to the ratios of basic colors in subsequent pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms conventional color error diffusion methods including separable method in terms of eye model-based mean squared error.

    This paper introduces a reversible watermarking algorithm that exploits an adaptable predictor and sorting parameter customized for each image and each payload. Our proposed method relies on a well-known prediction-error expansion (PEE) technique. Using small PE values and a harmonious PE sorting parameter greatly decreases image distortion. In order to exploit adaptable tools, Gaussian weight predictor and expanded variance mean (EVM) are used as parameters in this work. A genetic algorithm is also introduced to optimize all parameters and produce the best results possible. Our results show an improvement in image quality when compared with previous conventional works.

    One problem in the use of wireless Content Centric Networks (CCNs) is the need for substantial overhead to achieve reliability in content delivery due to the requirement for a request packet per each data packet transmission. This paper introduces a novel protocol to reduce overhead and achieve reliability. The protocol allows an interest packet to request multiple data packets and an intermediate node, rather than the provider, to send the data packet. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol improves the performance of wireless CCN.

    DDoS remains a major threat to Software Defined Networks. To keep SDN secure, effective detection techniques for DDoS are indispensable. Most of the newly proposed schemes for detecting such attacks on SDN make the SDN controller act as the IDS or the central server of a collaborative IDS. The controller consequently becomes a target of the attacks and a heavy loaded point of collecting traffic. A collaborative intrusion detection system is proposed in this paper without the need for the controller to play a central role. It is deployed as a modified artificial neural network distributed over the entire substrate of SDN. It disperses its computation power over the network that requires every participating switch to perform like a neuron. The system is robust without individual targets and has a global view on a large-scale distributed attack without aggregating traffic over the network. Emulation results demonstrate its effectiveness.

    Negative group delay characteristics can be used to improve signal-integrity performance such as equalizer for compensation of the group delay of transmission line (TL). This brief-paper newly attempts to propose a concept of the embedded Folded-Stepped Impedance Resonator (F-SIR) structure with open-stub resonator, for negative group delay and slope characteristics at high-frequency as well as low-insertion loss. The concept of the proposed TL is based on the combination of resonance and anti-resonance due to open-stub resonator in order to establish wideband negative group delay and negative slope characteristics. The proposed TL is fabricated on PCB, and then the concept is validated by measurement and simulation.

  • Observation of Break Arc Rotated by Radial Magnetic Field in a 48VDC Resistive Circuit Using Two High-Speed Cameras

    Break arcs are rotated with the radial magnetic field formed by a magnet embedded in a fixed cathode contact. The break arcs are generated in a 48VDC resistive circuit. The circuit current when the contacts are closed is 10A. The depth of the magnet varies from 1mm to 4mm to change the strength of the radial magnetic field for rotating break arcs. Images of break arcs are taken by two high-speed cameras from two directions and the rotational motion of the break arcs is observed. The rotational period of rotational motion of the break arcs is investigated. The following results are obtained. The break arcs rotate clockwise on the cathode surface seen from anode side. This rotation direction conforms to the direction of the Lorentz force that affects to the break arcs with the radial magnetic field. The rotational period gradually decreases during break operation. When the depth of magnet is larger, the rotational period becomes longer.

  • Self-Organization of Coverage of Densely Deployed WLANs Considering Outermost APs without Generating Coverage Holes

    In densely deployed wireless local area network (WLAN) environments, the arbitrary deployment of WLAN access points (APs) can cause serious cell overlaps among APs. In such situations, the ability to realize adaptable coverage using transmission power control (TPC) is effective for improving the area spectral efficiency. Meanwhile, it should be guaranteed that no coverage holes occur and that connectivity between APs and wireless stations (STAs) is maintained. In this paper, the self-organization of coverage domains of APs using TPC is proposed. The proposed technique reduces the incidence of coverage overlaps without generating area coverage holes. To detect coverage holes, STAs and/or APs are used as sensors that inform each AP of whether or not the points at which they exist are covered by the APs. However, there is a problem with this approach in that when the density of STAs is not sufficiently large, the occurrence of area coverage holes is inevitable because the points at which the sensors do not exist are not guaranteed to be covered by APs. This paper overcomes the problem by focusing APs that belong to network's outer boundary (boundary APs) and prohibiting the APs from operating at low transmission power levels, the idea being that the coverage domains of such APs always include the region covered by only those APs. The boundary APs are determined by performing Delaunay triangulation of the set of points at which all APs exist. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed TPC scheme in terms of its ability to reduce the total overlap area while avoiding the occurrence of area coverage holes.

    Circuit performance of SiC-MOSFET-based bidirectional isolated DC/DC converters is investigated based on circuit simulation with the physically accurate compact device model HiSIM_HV. It is demonstrated that the combined optimization of the MOSFETs Ron and of the inductances in the transformer can enable a conversion efficiency of more than 97%. The simulation study also verifies that the possible efficiency improvements are diminished due to the MOSFET-performance degradation, namely the carrier-mobility reduction, which results in a limitation of the possible Ron reduction. It is further demonstrated that an optimization of the MOSFET-operation conditions is important to utilize the resulting higher MOSFET performance for achieving additional converter efficiency improvements.

    Many research efforts are being focused upon the design of dynamic Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) schemes for macrocell/picocell heterogeneous networks employing Cell Range Expansion (CRE). In order to protect the expanded Pico User Equipments (ePUEs) located in the CRE region from severe Macro Base Station (MBS) interference in downlink, the conventional methods reduce the transmit power of the MBS in the Almost Blank Subframes (ABSs), where ePUEs can be scheduled. However, this severely limits the amount of usable resources/power for the MBS as compared to Resource Block (RB)-based dynamic allocation. Instead, we propose a self-organized RB-based dynamic resource allocation method. Based on the proposed partial Channel State Information (CSI) sharing, the MBS obtains ePUEs' CSI and predicts their RB allocation. Then, the MBS reduces its transmit power in RBs where the ePUEs' allocation probability is estimated to be high. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves excellent macrocell/picocell performance trade-offs, even when taking into account the overhead increase due to the partial CSI sharing.

  • Analysis of Information Floating with a Fixed Source of Information Considering Behavior Changes of Mobile Nodes

    Information floating delivers information to mobile nodes in specific areas without meaningless spreading of information by permitting mobile nodes to directly transfer information to other nodes by wireless links in designated areas called transmittable areas. In this paper, we assume that mobile nodes change direction at intersections after receiving such information as warnings and local advertisements and that an information source remains in some place away from the transmittable area and continuously broadcasts information. We analyze performance of information floating under these assumptions to explore effects of the behavior changes of mobile nodes, decision deadline of the behavior change, and existence of a fixed source on information floating. We theoretically analyze the probability that a node cannot receive information and also derive the size of each transmittable area so that this probability is close to desired values.

  • Threshold Relaxation and Holding Time Limitation Method for Accepting More General Calls under Emergency Trunk Reservation

    In emergency situations, telecommunication networks become congested due to large numbers of call requests. Also, some infrastructure breaks down, so undamaged communication resources must be utilized more efficiently. Therefore, several lines in telephone exchanges are generally reserved for emergency calls whose users communicate crucial information. The number of lines reserved for emergency calls is determined by a threshold, on a trunk reservation control method. To accept both required emergency calls and more general calls, the traffic intensity of arriving emergency calls should be estimated in advance, and a threshold should be configured so that the number of reserved lines becomes lower than the estimation. Moreover, we propose that the holding time for general calls should be positively limited. By guaranteeing the holding time sufficient for communicating essential information, holding time limitation reduces long-period calls so more general calls are accepted. In this paper, we propose a new CAC method to utilize undamaged communication resources more efficiently during emergencies. Our proposed method accepts more general calls by collaboratively relaxing the threshold of trunk reservation and limiting holding time of general calls. This method is targeted at not only the telephone exchange but also various systems on networks, e.g. base stations of the wireless network or SIP servers. With our method, the threshold is configured in consideration of the ratio of traffic intensities estimated in advance. We modeled the telephone exchange as a queueing loss system and calculated call-blocking rates of both emergency and general calls by using computer simulation. The comparison with the conventional holding time limitation method showed that our proposed method accepts the required number of emergency calls by appropriately relaxing the threshold, while suppressing the increase in call-blocking of general calls.

  • Privacy-Preserving Logistic Regression with Distributed Data Sources via Homomorphic Encryption

    Logistic regression is a powerful machine learning tool to classify data. When dealing with sensitive or private data, cares are necessary. In this paper, we propose a secure system for privacy-protecting both the training and predicting data in logistic regression via homomorphic encryption. Perhaps surprisingly, despite the non-polynomial tasks of training and predicting in logistic regression, we show that only additively homomorphic encryption is needed to build our system. Indeed, we instantiate our system with Paillier, LWE-based, and ring-LWE-based encryption schemes, highlighting the merits and demerits of each instantiation. Besides examining the costs of computation and communication, we carefully test our system over real datasets to demonstrate its utility.

    Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) are deployed to protect computer networks from malicious attacks. Proper evaluation of NIDS requires more scrutiny than the evaluation for general network appliances. This evaluation is commonly performed by sending pre-generated traffic through the NIDS. Unfortunately, this technique is often limited in diversity resulting in evaluations incapable of examining the complex data structures employed by NIDS. More sophisticated methods that generate workload directly from NIDS rules consume excessive resources and are incapable of running in real-time. This work proposes a novel approach to real-time workload generation for NIDS evaluation to improve evaluation diversity while maintaining much higher throughput. This work proposes a generative grammar which represents an optimized version of a context-free grammar derived from the set of strings matching to the given NIDS rule database. The grammar is memory-efficient and computationally light when generating workload. Experiments demonstrate that grammar-generated workloads exert an order of magnitude more effort on the target NIDS. Even better, this improved diversity comes at much smaller cost in memory and speeds four times faster than current approaches.

  • Study on RCS Reduction of Patch Array Using Switchable Absorption/Transmission Surface

    Radar cross section (RCS) of a patch array antenna is reduced using a switchable absorption/transmission surface. The switchable surface performs as between a radar absorber and transmission surface using diodes at 9GHz. The switchable surface was applied to the radome of a patch array and its radiation pattern and RCS reduction were evaluated. The gain and the radiation pattern with the radome was equivalent to that without the radome. The RCS reduction with the radome was 25dB compared to that without the radome.
