  • Multi-Layer Virtual Slide Scanning System with Multi-Focus Image Fusion for Cytopathology and Image Diagnosis Open Access

    Objective: The virtual slides are high-magnification whole digital images of histopathological tissue sections. The existing virtual slide system, which is optimized for scanning flat and smooth plane slides such as histopathological paraffin-embedded tissue sections, but is unsuitable for scanning irregular plane slides such as cytological smear slides. This study aims to develop a virtual slide system suitable for cytopathology slide scanning and to evaluate the effectiveness of multi-focus image fusion (MF) in cytopathological diagnosis. Study Design: We developed a multi-layer virtual slide scanning system with MF technology. Tumors for this study were collected from 21 patients diagnosed with primary breast cancer. After surgical extraction, smear slide for cytopathological diagnosis were manufactured by the conventional stamp method, fine needle aspiration method (FNA), and tissue washing method. The stamp slides were fixed in 95% ethanol. FNA and tissue washing samples were fixed in CytoRich RED Preservative Fluid, a liquid-based cytopathology (LBC). These slides were stained with Papanicolaou stain, and scanned by virtual slide system. To evaluate the suitability of MF technology in cytopathological diagnosis, we compared single focus (SF) virtual slide with MF virtual slide. Cytopathological evaluation was carried out by 5 pathologists and cytotechnologists. Results: The virtual slide system with MF provided better results than the conventional SF virtual slide system with regard to viewing inside cell clusters and image file size. Liquid-based cytology was more suitable than the stamp method for virtual slides with MF. Conclusion: The virtual slide system with MF is a useful technique for the digitization in cytopathology, and this technology could be applied to tele-cytology and e-learning by virtual slide system.

  • Asymmetry in Facial Expressions as a Function of Social Skills

    This study investigated the relationship between social skills and facial asymmetry in facial expressions. Three-dimensional facial landmark data of facial expressions (neutral, happy, and angry) were obtained from Japanese participants (n = 62). Following a facial expression task, each participant completed KiSS-18 (Kikuchi's Scale of Social Skills; Kikuchi, 2007). Using a generalized Procrustes analysis, faces and their mirror-reversed versions were represented as points on a hyperplane. The asymmetry of each individual face was defined as Euclidian distance between the face and its mirror reversed face on this plane. Subtraction of the asymmetry level of a neutral face of each individual from the asymmetry level of a target emotion face was defined as the index of “expression asymmetry” given by a particular emotion. Correlation coefficients of KiSS-18 scores and expression asymmetry scores were computed for both happy and angry expressions. Significant negative correlations between KiSS-18 scores and expression asymmetries were found for both expressions. Results indicate that the symmetry in facial expressions increases with higher level of social skills.

    With the fast development of mobile communication technologies, mobile multimedia services like mobile Video on Demand (VOD) are becoming prevalent. However, VOD streaming requires dedicated bandwidth to satisfy Quality of Service (QoS), and the limited wireless bandwidth will become insufficient to support the increasing number of mobile VOD users. In order to solve the problem, this paper proposes a Call Admission Control (CAC) approach which can accept new users even when the system bandwidth is insufficient. Our approach also guarantees continuous playback for subscribers by taking into account the service end time and the delay bound of the users. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can increase the number of concurrent users and reduce the connection blocking probability significantly without playback interruption.

    Flat Panel Displays (FPDs) are manufactured using many pieces of different processing equipment arranged sequentially in a line. Although the constant inter-arrival time (i.e., the tact time) of glass substrates in the line should be kept as short as possible, the collision probability between glass substrates increases as tact time decreases. Since the glass substrate is expensive and fragile, collisions should be avoided. In this paper, we derive a closed form formula of the approximate collision probability for a model, in which the processing time on each piece of equipment is assumed to follow Erlang distribution. We also compare some numerical results of the closed form and computer simulation results of the collision probability.

  • Symbol-Rate Clock Recovery for Integrating DFE Receivers

    In this paper, a symbol-rate clock recovery scheme for a receiver that uses an integrating decision feedback equalizer (DFE) is proposed. The proposed clock recovery using expected received signal amplitudes as the criterion realizes minimum mean square error (MMSE) clock recovery. A receiver architecture using an integrating DFE with the proposed symbol-rate clock recovery is also proposed. The proposed clock recovery algorithm successfully recovered the clock phase in a system level simulation only with a DFE. Higher jitter tolerance than 0.26 UIPP at 10 Gb/s operation was also confirmed in the simulation with an 11 dB channel loss at 5 GHz.

  • Scalable Detection of Frequent Substrings by Grammar-Based Compression

    A scalable pattern discovery by compression is proposed. A string is representable by a context-free grammar deriving the string deterministically. In this framework of grammar-based compression, the aim of the algorithm is to output as small a grammar as possible. Beyond that, the optimization problem is approximately solvable. In such approximation algorithms, the compressor based on edit-sensitive parsing (ESP) is especially suitable for detecting maximal common substrings as well as long frequent substrings. Based on ESP, we design a linear time algorithm to find all frequent patterns in a string approximately and prove several lower bounds to guarantee the length of extracted patterns. We also examine the performance of our algorithm by experiments in biological sequences and other compressible real world texts. Compared to other practical algorithms, our algorithm is faster and more scalable with large and repetitive strings.

    It has been reported that the temporal change of current during the deposition shows a plateau and a break, similar to those found in a photocurrent profile taken by the time-of-flight technique for the investigation of photocarrier dynamics in condensed matters, enabling the estimation of electrophoretic mobility of colloidal particles in the suspension. The estimation of the electrophoretic mobility from transient current during the deposition by the simple drift model is based on the assumption that a constant electric field is uniformly applied between the positive and negative electrodes. Therefore, it is important to check if this assumption is satisfied. It is also important to measure the temporal evolution of film thickness, because this may give information about uniformity of colloidal size in the suspension. This study addresses these topics and validity of the assumption is confirmed.

  • Improvement of Adhesion Strength of Fluoropolymer Thin Films by Vapor Deposition Polymerization

    Fluoropolymer thin films were prepared by the ion-assisted vapor deposition polymerization (IAD) of 2-(perfluorohexyl)ethylacrylate (Rf-6). The adhesion strength of the film to substrates was estimated by sonicating the films in water and by immersing the films into dichloro-pentafluoro propane (HCFC225). The Rf-6 polymer films by IAD showed stronger adhesion to glass compared to a spin-coated Teflon AF film. The adhesion strength was improved with increasing ion energy Eion of IAD. The IAD films showed superior adhesion to PET surface compared to the glass substrate. The Rf-6 polymer film was effective as a single-layer antireflective coating. The refractive index of the film was 1.368 (λ = 546 nm), which increased slightly with increasing Eion. IAD can be a promising method to prepare fluoropolymer thin films due to the solvent-less process and the flexibility in controlling the film characteristics by the ion energy.

    With appropriate geometry configurations, bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can break through the limitations of monostatic SAR for forward-looking imaging. Thanks to such a capability, bistatic forward-looking SAR (BFSAR) has extensive potential applications. This paper develops a frequency-domain imaging algorithm for translational invariant BFSAR. The algorithm uses the method of Lengendre polynomials expansion to compute the two dimensional point target reference spectrum, and this spectrum is used to perform the range cell migration correction (RCMC), secondary range compression and azimuth compression. In particular, the Doppler-centroid and bistatic-range dependent interpolation for residual RCMC is presented in detail. In addition, a method that combines the ambiguity and resolution theories to determine the forward-looking imaging swath is also presented in this paper.

    We report a trial of 100-GS/s optical quantization with 5-bit resolution using soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) and spectral compression. We confirm that 100-GS/s 5-bit optical quantization is realized to quantize a 5.0-GHz sinusoid electrical signal in simulation. In order to experimentally verify the possibility of 100-GS/s 5-bit optical quantization, we execute 5-bit optical quantization by using two sampled signals with 10-ps intervals.

  • Eigen Analysis of Space Embedded Equation in Moment Vector Space for Multi-Dimensional Chaotic Systems

    Multihigh-dimensional chaotic systems were reduced to low-dimensional space embedded equations (SEEs), and their macroscopic and statistical properties were investigated using eigen analysis of the moment vector equation (MVE) of the SEE. First, the state space of the target system was discretized into a finite discrete space. Next, an embedding from the discrete space to a low-dimensional discrete space was defined. The SEE of the target system was derived using the embedding. Finally, eigen analysis was applied to the MVE of the SEE to derive the properties of the target system. The geometric increase in the dimension of the MVE with the dimension of the target system was avoided by using the SEE. The pdfs of arbitrary elements in the target nonlinear system were derived without a reduction in accuracy due to dimension reduction. Moreover, since the dynamics of the system were expressed by the eigenvalues of the MVE, it was possible to identify multiple steady states that cannot be done using numerical simulation. This approach can thus be used to analyze the macroscopic and statistical properties of multi-dimensional chaotic systems.

  • A Method to Reduce Inter-ISP Transit Cost Caused by Overlay Routing Based on End-to-End Network Measurement

    Overlay routing is an application-level routing mechanism on overlay networks. Previous researches have revealed that the overlay routing can improve user-perceived performance. However, it may also generate traffic unintended by ISPs, incurring additional monetary cost. In addition, since ISPs and end users have their own objectives respectively regarding traffic routing, overlay routing must be operated considering both standpoints. In the present paper, we propose a method to reduce inter-ISP transit costs caused by overlay routing from the both standpoints of ISPs and end users. To determine the relationships among ASes, which are required for ISP cost-aware routing, we construct a method to estimate a transit cost of overlay-routed paths from end-to-end network performance values. Utilizing the metric, we propose a novel method that controls overlay routing from the both standpoints of ISPs and end users. Through extensive evaluations using measurement results from the actual network environments, we confirm that the advantage of the proposed method whereby we can reduce the transit cost in the overlay routing and can control the overlay routing according to the objectives of both ISPs and end users.

    Player detection is an important part in sports video analysis. Over the past few years, several learning based detection methods using various supervised two-class techniques have been presented. Although satisfactory results can be obtained, a lot of manual labor is needed to construct the training set. To overcome this drawback, this letter proposes a player detection method based on one-class SVM (OCSVM) using automatically generated training data. The proposed method is evaluated using several video clips captured from World Cup 2010, and experimental results show that our approach achieves a high detection rate while keeping the training set construction's cost low.

    This paper proposes a pipeline analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with non-binary encoding technique based on β-expansion. By using multiply-by-β switched-capacitor (SC) multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC) circuit, our proposed ADC is composed by radix-β (1 < β < 2) 1 bit pipeline stages instead of using the conventional radix-2 1.5 bit/1 bit pipeline stages to realize non-binary analog-to-digital conversion. Also with proposed β-value estimation algorithm, there is not any digital calibration technique is required in proposed pipeline ADC. The redundancy of non-binary ADC tolerates not only the non-ideality of comparator, but also the mismatch of capacitances and the gain error of operational amplifier (op-amp) in MDAC. As a result, the power hungry high gain and wide bandwidth op-amps are not necessary for high resolution ADC, so that the reliability-enhanced pipeline ADC with simple amplifiers can operate faster and with lower power. We analyse the β-expansion of AD conversion and modify the β-encoding technique for pipeline ADC. In our knowledge, this is the first proposal architecture for non-binary pipeline ADC. The reliability of the proposed ADC architecture and β-encoding technique are verified by MATLAB simulations.

  • Multiplexing Technique of Radio-on-Fiber Signals Using Chromatic Dispersion Control

    In this paper, a novel interference suppression technique from added RoF (Radio-on-Fiber) system is proposed. In general RoF system, received RF (radio frequency) signal intensity is periodically varied depending on chromatic dispersion that is known as fading phenomenon. In proposed technique null points of this fading phenomenon are intentionally applied to minimize signal interferences. This technique can realize two types of multiplexing RoF signal. In the first configuration, a single optical carrier is modulated twice using two optical modulators connected in series. In second configuration, new RoF signal is added to the existing network using individual light source. Multiplexing RoF signals of 10 GHz-band with data of 30 Mbps 64QAM is experimentally demonstrated.

    In this letter, we prove that for fading multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing networks, a simple fixed rate scheduling scheme with only 1 bit channel state information feedback is capable of achieving the optimal performance in the wideband limit. This result indicates that the complexities of both the feedback and channel coding schemes can be reduced with nearly no system performance penalty in wideband wireless communication environments.

    This paper proposes an IP fast rerouting method which can be implemented in OpenFlow framework. While the current IP is robust, its reactive and global rerouting processes require the long recovery time against failure. On the other hand, IP fast rerouting provides a milliseconds-order recovery time by proactive and local restoration mechanism. Implementation of IP fast rerouting is not common in real systems, however; it requires the coordination of additional forwarding functions to a commercial hardware. We propose an IP fast rerouting mechanism using OpenFlow that separates control function from hardware implementation. Our mechanism does not require any extension of current forwarding hardware. On the contrary, increase of backup routes becomes main overhead of our proposal. We also embed the compression mechanism to our IP fast rerouting mechanism. We show the effectiveness of our IP fast rerouting in terms of the fast restoration and the backup routes compression effect through computer simulations.

  • Energy Conversion and Phase Regulation in Transient States of Frequency Entrainment Described by van der Pol and Phase-Locked Loop Equations

    We study the role of energy conversion in phase regulation of frequency entrainment. For an open dynamical system that interacts with its environment, energy conversion in the system is the key to a wide variety of nonlinear phenomena including frequency entrainment. In this paper, using the standard notion of energy, we study the phenomena of frequency entrainment by periodic forces in two different types of oscillations: libration and rotation. Theoretical analysis shows a relationship between phase regulation and energy conversion in the entrainment phenomena. Both of them are explained as a common phase regulation. On the other hand, no common relationship between transient behaviors and energy conversion is identified for the two different types of oscillations. For libration, the development of frequency entrainment does not depend on the energy conversion. The energy input to the oscillator affects the amplitude of libration. For the rotation, the development of frequency entrainment is governed by the amount of energy conversion. The energy input to the system directly regulates the phase of rotation, in other words, controls the entrainment phenomenon. These results suggest a different dynamical and control origin behind the two types of entrainment phenomena as the energy conversion in the systems.

  • Improved Frequency Offset Estimation in OFDM Systems Using Periodic Training Sequence

    In this paper, an extended best linear unbiased estimator (EBLUE) based on a periodic training sequence is proposed and investigated for frequency offset estimation in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The structure of EBLUE is general and flexible so it adapts to different complexity constraints, and is attractive in practical implementation. Performance analysis and design strategy of EBLUE are provided to realize the best tradeoff between performance and complexity. Moreover, closed-form results of both weight and performance make EBLUE even more attractive in practical implementation. Both the performance and complexity of EBLUE are compared with other proposals and the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) to demonstrate the merit of EBLUE.
