This paper proposes methods for accelerating DPA by using the CPU and the GPU in a parallel manner. The overhead of naive DPA evaluation software increases excessively as the number of points in a trace or the number of traces is enlarged due to the rapid increase of file I/O overhead. This paper presents some techniques, with respect to DPA-arithmetic and file handling, which can make the overhead of DPA software become not extreme but gradual as the increase of the amount of trace data to be processed. Through generic experiments, we show that the software, equipped with the proposed methods, using both CPU and GPU can shorten the time for evaluating the DPA resistance of devices by almost half.

We present a session initiation protocol (SIP) network design for a voice-over-IP network to prevent congestion caused by people calling friends and family after a disaster. The design increases the capacity of SIP servers in a network by using all of the SIP servers equally. It takes advantage of the fact that equipment for voice data packets is different from equipment for signaling packets in SIP networks. Furthermore, the design achieves simple routing on the basis of telephone numbers. We evaluated the performance of our design in preventing congestion through simulation. We showed that the proposed design has roughly 20 times more capacity, which is 57 times the normal load, than the conventional design if a disaster were to occur in Niigata Prefecture struck by the Chuetsu earthquake in 2004.
This paper presents a comprehensive explanation of the formation of the electric arc between opening contacts in a current carrying electric circuit. As the contacts begin to open a molten metal bridge forms between them. The rupture of this bridge and the initial formation of the electric arc are studied in both atmospheric air and vacuum using experiments to determine the direction of metal transfer between the contacts as a function of time after the rupture of the molten metal bridge. High speed streak photography is also used to show the rupture of the molten metal bridge and the initial formation of the electric arc. Analysis of these data show that a very high-pressure, high-temperature metal vapor zone exists between the contacts after the rupture of the molten metal bridge. Under this condition a pseudo-arc forms where current is carried by metal ions and an anomalous, high net transfer of metal to the cathodic contact occurs. The pressure in this region decreases rapidly and there is a transition to the usual electric arc, which still operates in the metal vapor. In this arc the current is now mostly carried by electrons. The data shows that there is still a net transfer of metal to the cathode, but now its volume is a function of the arcing time.

In real environments, the presence of ambient noise and room reverberations seriously degrades the accuracy in sound source localization. In addition, conventional sound source localization methods cannot localize multiple sound sources accurately in real noisy environments. This paper proposes a new method of multiple sound source localization using a distributed microphone system that is a recording system with multiple microphones dispersed to a wide area. The proposed method localizes a sound source by finding the position that maximizes the accumulated correlation coefficient between multiple channel pairs. After the estimation of the first sound source, a typical pattern of the accumulated correlation for a single sound source is subtracted from the observed distribution of the accumulated correlation. Subsequently, the second sound source is searched again. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments of two sound source localization were carried out in an office room. The result shows that sound source localization accuracy is about 99.7%. The proposed method could realize the multiple sound source localization robustly and stably.

This paper proposes a new pattern matching architecture with multi-character processing for deep packet inspection. The proposed pattern matching architecture detects the start point of pattern matching from multi-character input using input text alignment. By eliminating duplicate hardware components using process element tree, hardware cost is greatly reduced in the proposed pattern matching architecture.

We propose a new multi-objective genetic programming (MOGP) for automatic construction of image feature extraction programs (FEPs). The proposed method was originated from a well known multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA), i.e., NSGA-II. The key differences are that redundancy-regulation mechanisms are applied in three main processes of the MOGP, i.e., population truncation, sampling, and offspring generation, to improve population diversity as well as convergence rate. Experimental results indicate that the proposed MOGP-based FEP construction system outperforms the two conventional MOEAs (i.e., NSGA-II and SPEA2) for a test problem. Moreover, we compared the programs constructed by the proposed MOGP with four human-designed object recognition programs. The results show that the constructed programs are better than two human-designed methods and are comparable with the other two human-designed methods for the test problem.

We have developed a macro model, which allows us to describe precise LDMOS DC/AC characteristics. Characterization of anomalous gate input capacitance is the key issue in the LDMOS model development. We have newly employed a T-type distributed RC scheme for gate overlapped LDMOS drift region. The bias dependent resistance and capacitance are modeled independently in Verilog-A as R-model and PMOS-capacitance. The dividing factor of the distributed R is introduced to reflect the shield effect of the gate overlap capacitance. Comparison between the new model and measurement results has proven that the developed macro model reproduces accurately not only the gate input capacitance, but also DC characteristics.
Interrupt service routines are a key technology for embedded systems. In this paper, we introduce the standard approach for using Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPNs) as a high-level model for generating CTMC Continuous-Time Markov Chains (CTMCs) and then use Markov Reward Models (MRMs) to compute the performance for embedded systems. This framework is employed to analyze two embedded controllers with low cost and high performance, ARM7 and Cortex-M3. Cortex-M3 is designed with a tail-chaining mechanism to improve the performance of ARM7 when a nested interrupt occurs on an embedded controller. The Platform Independent Petri net Editor 2 (PIPE2) tool is used to model and evaluate the controllers in terms of power consumption and interrupt overhead performance. Using numerical results, in spite of the power consumption or interrupt overhead, Cortex-M3 performs better than ARM7.

A transceiver employing hierarchical constellation encodes two hierarchies with different levels of protection and selectively decodes one or both of them, resulting in constellation inconsistency of encoding and decoding. Therefore, a conventional ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) receiver, which restores the signals as they are transmitted, can not be compatible with the constellation inconsistency. To mitigate this problem, an OSIC detector with the individual received bit rate per data stream is first designed. To further improve the error performance, the proposed detector is modified, for which distinct criteria are used for demodulation and cancellation. It is shown that the proposed detector achieves spectrally efficient detection while guaranteeing reliable communication.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is expected to be used as a localization tool. By the localization of RFID tags, a mobile robot equipped with an RFID reader can recognize the surrounding environment. In this paper, we propose a novel effective scheme called the communication range recognition (CRR) scheme for localizing RFID tags. In this scheme, an RFID reader determines the boundaries of the communication range when it is appropriately positioned by the robot. We evaluate the estimated position accuracy through numerous experiments. We show that the moving distance of the RFID reader in the proposed scheme is lower than that in conventional schemes.

The dynamic characteristics are the key issues in the optimum design of a permanent magnetic actuator (PMA). A new approach to forecast the dynamic characteristics of the multilink PMA is proposed. By carrying out further developments of ADAMS and ANSOFT, a mathematic calculation model describing the coupling of mechanical movement, electric circuit and magnetic field considering eddy current effect, is constructed. With this model, the dynamic characteristics of the multilink PMA are calculated and compared with the experimental results. Factors that affect the opening time of the multilink PMA are analyzed with the model as well. The method is capable of providing a reference for the design of the PMA.

In this paper, the robustness of the posterior-based confidence measures is improved by utilizing entropy information, which is calculated for speech-unit-level posteriors using only the best recognition result, without requiring a larger computational load than conventional methods. Using different normalization methods, two posterior-based entropy confidence measures are proposed. Practical details are discussed for two typical levels of hidden Markov model (HMM)-based posterior confidence measures, and both levels are compared in terms of their performances. Experiments show that the entropy information results in significant improvements in the posterior-based confidence measures. The absolute improvements of the out-of-vocabulary (OOV) rejection rate are more than 20% for both the phoneme-level confidence measures and the state-level confidence measures for our embedded test sets, without a significant decline of the in-vocabulary accuracy.

In a WSAN (Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network), most resources, including sensors and actuators, are designed for certain applications in a dedicated environment. Many researchers have proposed to use of gateways to infer and annotate heterogeneous data; however, such centralized methods produce a bottlenecking network and computation overhead on the gateways that causes longer response time in activity processing, worsening performance. This work proposes two distribution inference mechanisms: regionalized and sequential inference mechanisms to reduce the response time in activity processing. Finally, experimental results for the proposed inference mechanisms are presented, and it shows that our mechanisms outperform the traditional centralized inference mechanism.

We investigated suitable spatial inverse filters for cortical dipole imaging from the scalp electroencephalogram (EEG). The effects of incorporating statistical information of signal and noise into inverse procedures were examined by computer simulations and experimental studies. The parametric projection filter (PPF) and parametric Wiener filter (PWF) were applied to an inhomogeneous three-sphere volume conductor head model. The noise covariance matrix was estimated by applying independent component analysis (ICA) to scalp potentials. The present simulation results suggest that the PPF and the PWF provided excellent performance when the noise covariance was estimated from the differential noise between EEG and the separated signal using ICA and the signal covariance was estimated from the separated signal. Moreover, the spatial resolution of the cortical dipole imaging was improved while the influence of noise was suppressed by including the differential noise at the instant of the imaging and by adjusting the duration of noise sample according to the signal to noise ratio. We applied the proposed imaging technique to human experimental data of visual evoked potential and obtained reasonable results that coincide to physiological knowledge.
In the conventional multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication systems, most of the antenna selection methods considered are suitable only for spatially separated uni-polarized system under Rayleigh fading channel in non-line of sight (NLOS) condition. There have a few antenna selection schemes for the cross-polarized system in LOS condition and Ricean fading channel, and no antenna selection scheme for the MIMO channel with both LOS and NLOS. In the practical MIMO channel case, influence of LOS and NLOS conditions in the channel can vary from time to time according to the channel parameters and user movement in the system. Based on these influences and channel condition, uni-polarized system may outperform a cross-polarized. Thus, we should consider this kind of practical MIMO channel environment when developing the antenna selection scheme. Moreover, no research work has been done on reducing the complexity of antenna selection for this kind of practical MIMO channel environment. In this paper, reduced complexity in antenna selection is proposed to give the higher throughput in the practical MIMO channel environment. In the proposed scheme, suitable polarized antennas are selected based on the calculation of singular value decomposition (SVD) of channel matrix and then adaptive bit loading is applied. Simulation results show that throughput of the system can be improved under the constraint of target BER and total transmit power of the MIMO system.

Multimedia multicast with two servers based on the multiterminal source coding is studied in some previous researches. Due to the possibility of providing an approach for practical code design for more than two correlated sources in IMTSC/CEO setup, in this paper, the framework of Slepian-Wolf coded quantization is extended and a practical code design is presented for IMTSC/CEO with the number of encoders greater than two. Then the multicast system based on the IMTSC/CEO is applied to the cases with three, four and five servers. Since the underlying code design approach for the IMTSC/CEO problem has the capability of applying to an arbitrary number of active encoders, the proposed MMBMSC method can also be used with an arbitrary number of servers easily. Also, explicit expressions of the expected distortion with an arbitrary number of servers in the MMBMSC system are presented. Experimental results with data, image and video signals show the superiority of our proposed method over the conventional solutions and over the MMBMSC system with two servers.
In this paper we clarify for the boost and the buck-boost converter that the ripple effect is not ignorable for the frequency response, and reveal that it causes the unexpected characteristics where either the phase lag or the phase lead appears depending on the shape of waveform of the ramp generator in the PWM circuit. Eventually the phase margin for the stability drastically changes depending on the slope direction (normal or reverse) of the sawtooth waveform of the ramp generator even in the same circuit configuration. For the ripple effects we propose the general analysis model and analyze them of the boost and the buck-boost converters. As the result we identify that the ripple effects are caused mainly by the variation of the slope and the average of the ripple, and reveal that the both converters have the asymmetric characteristics for the slope direction of the sawtooth waveform of the ramp generator and there is more advantage for the stability in case of the reverse slope direction than in case of the normal one. It also clarified that the effect of ESR of the output capacitor of the converter on the frequency response is different according to the shape of the sawtooth waveforms. The proposed analysis method is validated by the experiments and simulations.
The performance of the least-mean-square (LMS) beamformer is heavily dependent on the choice of the step-size, for it governs the convergence rate and steady-state excess mean squared error. To meet the conflicting requirement of low misadjustment, especially for the beamformer being modified in response to the multipath environmental changes, it needs to be controlled in a proper way. In this letter, we present an efficient adaptive step-size subarray LMS to achieve good performance. Simulation results are provided for illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

Usually the contact voltage drop or contact resistance of electromagnetic relays is observed only to identify if the contacts are failure or not on the manufactures' life tests. However, it is difficult to reveal the contact performance degradation because the variation of contact resistance may not be obvious. In this paper, a new life test technology was investigated to analyze the contact failure mechanisms and degenerative processes of electromagnetic relays by measuring their time parameters including closing time, opening time, over-travel time, rebound duration and gap time during each operation. Moreover, for the purpose of verifying the time parameters, the contact motion and contact morphology during life test were record by using a high speed camera. Both the variations of time parameters and information obtained from photos taken by high speed camera show that it involves three different degenerative phases during the whole life of a relay. The results also indicate this method is an effective technology to discriminate and diagnose the failure mechanisms for electromagnetic relays.
We describe a user scheduling scheme suitable for zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) downlink multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions in time-division-duplex distributed antenna systems. This user scheduling scheme consists of inter-cell-interference mitigation scheduling by using fractional frequency reuse, proportional fair scheduling in the OFDM frequency domain, and high-capacity ZFBF-MU-MIMO scheduling by using zero-forcing with selection (ZFS). Simulation results demonstrate in a severe user-distribution condition that includes cell-edge users that the proposed user scheduling scheme achieves high average cell throughputs close to that provided by only ZFS and that it also achieves almost the same degree of user fairness as round-robin user scheduling.
