  • Language Modeling Using Patterns Extracted from Parse Trees for Speech Recognition

    We propose new language models to represent phrasal structures by patterns extracted from parse trees. First, modified word trigram models are proposed. They are extracted from sentences analyzed by the preprocessing of the parser with knowledge. Since sentences are analyzed to create sub-trees of a few words, these trigram models can represent relations among a few neighbor words more strongly than conventional word trigram models. Second, word pattern models are used on these modified word trigram models. The word patterns are extracted from parse trees and can represent phrasal structures and much longer word-dependency than trigram models. Experimental results show that modified trigram models are more effective than traditional trigram models and that pattern models attain slight improvements over modified trigram models. Furthermore, additional experiments show that pattern models are more effective for long sentences.

    A soft-decision decoding scheme of low-density parity-check codes (LDPC) is proposed for hard-detected signals of optical fiber communication (OFC) systems. Based on the error detection, the proposed scheme converts the received hard-decision into soft reliability for the input of the LDPC decoder, and soft-decision decoding is performed. Simulation results under OFC channels are shown and superior performance is obtained by using the proposed decoding scheme of the LDPC codes.

    For any pair of distinct nodes in an n-pancake graph, we give an algorithm for construction of n-1 internally disjoint paths connecting the nodes in the time complexity of polynomial order of n. The length of each path obtained and the time complexity of the algorithm are estimated theoretically and verified by computer simulation.

    In this paper, we discuss crosstalk equalization technique for high-speed digital transmission systems. This equalization technique makes use of the cyclostationarity of the crosstalk interferer. We first analyze the eigenstructure of the equalizer in the presence of cyclostationary crosstalk interference. It is shown that the eigenvalues of the equalizer depend upon the folded signal and interferer power spectra, and the cross power spectrum between the signal and the interferer. The expressions of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) and the excess MSE are then obtained by using the equalizer's eigenstructure. Analysis and simulation results indicate that such peculiar equalizer's eigenstructure in the presence of cyclostationary interference results in significantly different initial convergence and steady-state behaviors as compared with the stationary noise case. We also show that the performance of the equalizer varies depending on the relative clock phase of the symbol clocks used by the signal and the crosstalk interferer.

  • An Adaptive Grid Approach for the Simulation of Electromigration Induced Void Migration

    For tracking electromigration induced evolution of voids a diffuse interface model is applied. We assume an interconnect as two-dimensional electrically conducting via which contains initially a circular void. The diffuse interface governing equation was solved applying a finite element scheme with a robust local grid adaptation algorithm. Simulations were carried out for voids exposed to high current. An influence of the void dynamics on the resistance of interconnect is investigated. In the case of the interconnect via it was shown that a migrating void exactly follows the current flow, retaining its stability, but due to change of shape and position causes significant fluctuations in interconnect resistance.

    In this paper, a grey filtering approach based on GM(1,1) model is proposed. Then the grey filtering is applied to speech enhancement. The fundamental idea in the proposed grey filtering is to relate estimation error of GM(1,1) model to additive noise. The simulation results indicate that the additive noise can be estimated accurately by the proposed grey filtering approach with an appropriate scaling factor. Note that the spectral subtraction approach to speech enhancement is heavily dependent on the accuracy of statistics of additive noise and that the grey filtering is able to estimate additive noise appropriately. A magnitude spectral subtraction (MSS) approach for speech enhancement is proposed where the mechanism to determine the non-speech and speech portions is not required. Two examples are provided to justify the proposed MSS approach based on grey filtering. The simulation results show that the objective of speech enhancement has been achieved by the proposed MSS approach. Besides, the proposed MSS approach is compared with HFR-based approach in [4] and ZP approach in [5]. Simulation results indicate that in most of cases HFR-based and ZP approaches outperform the proposed MSS approach in SNRimp. However, the proposed MSS approach has better subjective listening quality than HFR-based and ZP approaches.

    This paper derives a set of orthogonal polynomials for a complex random variable that is uniformly distributed in two dimensions (2D). The polynomials are used in a series expansion to approximate memoryless nonlinearities in digital QAM systems. We also study stochastic identification of nonlinearities using the orthogonal polynomials through analysis and simulations.

    This paper reviews antenna technologies for cellular phone terminal in Japan. In regard to the technologies two technical subjects are addressed: a diversity system and miniaturization of terminal size. These subjects provide motivation for studies on design methods for diversity antennas, development of built-in antennas, and control methods for surface current on terminal cavity. These studies are progressing.

  • An Investigation of Magnetic Field Effects on Energy States for Nanoscale InAs/GaAs Quantum Rings and Dots

    In this paper, we investigate the electron-hole energy states and energy gap in three-dimensional (3D) InAs/GaAs quantum rings and dots with different shapes under external magnetic fields. Our realistic model formulation includes: (i) the effective mass Hamiltonian in non-parabolic approximation for electrons, (ii) the effective mass Hamiltonian in parabolic approximation for holes, (iii) the position- and energy-dependent quasi-particle effective mass approximation for electrons, (iv) the finite hard wall confinement potential, and (v) the Ben Daniel-Duke boundary conditions. To solve the 3D nonlinear problem without any fitting parameters, we have applied the nonlinear iterative method to obtain self-consistent solutions. Due to the penetration of applied magnetic fields into torus ring region, for ellipsoidal- and rectangular-shaped quantum rings we find nonperiodical oscillations of the energy gap between the lowest electron and hole states as a function of external magnetic fields. The nonperiodical oscillation is different from 1D periodical argument and strongly dependent on structure shape and size. The result is useful to study magneto-optical properties of the nanoscale quantum rings and dots.

  • A Direct Hashing Directory for Fast Inode Lookup

    In a conventional file system, the directory tree is traversed to find the inode number of a file. The inode lookup performance degrades as the size of the directory tree increases. In this letter, a new directory scheme, called direct hashing directory, is proposed. The inode number of a file is the cyclic redundancy code of the file's absolute path name such that the inode number can be computed directly. The average number of disk accesses for inode lookup is 1.08, which is order of magnitude faster than the conventional directory schemes such as hashing, B tree, and sequential directory.

    Antennas for Japanese terrestrial microwave relay links have been developed since the1950's and put into commercial use up to now in Japan. In particular, the path-length lens antennas developed in 1953 represents a monumental achievement for terrestrial microwave relay links, and the offset antenna for 256 QAM radio relay links developed in 1989 has the best electrical performance in the world. This paper reviews the antennas for Japanese terrestrial microwave relay links that have historical significance and describes the antenna design technologies developed in Japan.

  • Establishment of Protection Paths Using Maximum Degree of Sharing in WDM Networks

    In wavelength division multiplexed networks, shared path protection provides the same level of protection against a single fiber-link failure as dedicated path protection with potentially higher network utilization. The shared path protection is more complex to provision and maintain. In this paper, we introduce a parameter, the degree of sharing, which refers to the number of protection paths that a wavelength can be assigned to on a link. We propose methods for calculating the maximum degree of sharing. We consider on-line routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) of protection paths that are established for incremental traffic using the maximum degree of sharing. Establishment of protection paths using the maximum degree of sharing can simplify the algorithm. We compare the results on the decreased calculation time with accepted connection requests for a given number of wavelengths, assuming that wavelengths are assigned according to the First-Fit policy for working paths and Last-Fit policy for protection paths. The more wavelengths are used, the more calculation time can be reduced. When the load increases, the decreasing rate of calculation time also increases.

    An adaptive array antenna for the suppression of high-power interference in direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems is presented. Although DS-CDMA has sufficient flexibility to support a variety of services, from voice to moving-pictures, with high levels of quality, multiple access interference (MAI) is a problem. This is particularly so of the high-power interference which accompanies high-speed transmission in DS-CDMA. While the application of adaptive array antennas is an effective way of improving signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), problems with this approach include large levels of power consumption and the high costs of hardware and of implementing the antennas. Therefore, our main purpose is to realize a simple configuration for an adaptive array system. In order to reduce the required amounts of processing, a common beam provides suppression of high-power interference for the low-bit-rate users; this makes per-user preparation of weights unnecessary. This approach also reduces the consumption of power by the system. Interference is cancelled by minimization of the array output power (i.e., the application of a power inversion algorithm) before despreading. The approach also allows us to improve the implementation of the antenna elements by using small auxiliary antennas. The basic performance of the system is confirmed through numerical calculation and computer simulation. Furthermore, a real-time processing unit has been developed and the effectiveness of the approach is confirmed by an experiment in a radio-anechoic chamber.

  • Confidence Scoring for Accurate HMM-Based Speech Recognition by Using Monophone-Level Normalization Based on Subspace Method

    In this paper, a novel confidence scoring method that is applied to N-best hypotheses (word candidates) output from an HMM-based classifier is proposed. In the first pass of the proposed method, the HMM-based classifier with monophone models outputs N-best hypotheses and boundaries of all monophones in the hypotheses. In the second pass, an SM (Subspace Method)-based verifier tests the hypotheses by comparing confidence scores. To test the hypotheses, at first, the SM-based verifier calculates the similarity between phone vectors and an eigen vector set of monophones, then this similarity score is converted into a likelihood score with normalization of acoustic quality, and finally, an HMM-based likelihood of word level and an SM-based likelihood of monophone level are combined to formulate the confidence measure. Two kinds of experiments were performed to evaluate this confidence measure on speaker-independent word recognition. The results showed that the proposed confidence scoring method significantly reduced the word error rate from 4.7% obtained by the standard HMM classifier to 2.0%, and in an unknown word rejection, it reduced the equal error rate from 9.0% to 6.5%.

    Turbo decoding with coherent detection requires accurate channel estimation. In this paper, we consider outer-turbo channel estimation (OTCE), which carries out iterative channel estimation before turbo decoding, and inner-turbo channel estimation (ITCE), which incorporates iterative channel estimation into turbo decoding process. The average bit error rate (BER) performances with OTCE and ITCE in a frequency nonselective Rayleigh fading channel with antenna diversity reception are evaluated by means of computer simulations to be compared. It is found that although ITCE is superior to OTCE, OTCE provides the average BER performance very close to ITCE when dual antenna diversity reception is used.

    The present paper deals with the blind deconvolution of a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Finite Impulse Response (MIMO-FIR) system. To deal with the blind deconvolution problem using the second-order statistics (SOS) of the outputs, Hua and Tugnait considered it under the conditions that a) the FIR system is irreducible and b) the input signals are spatially uncorrelated and have distinct power spectra. In the present paper, the problem is considered under a weaker condition than the condition a). Namely, we assume that c) the FIR system is equalizable by means of the SOS of the outputs. Under b) and c), we show that the system can be blindly identified up to a permutation, a scaling, and a delay using the SOS of the outputs. Moreover, based on this identifiability, we show a novel necessary and sufficiently condition for solving the blind deconvolution problem, and then, based on the condition, we propose a new algorithm for finding an equalizer using the SOS of the outputs, while Hua and Tugnait have not proposed any algorithm for solving the blind deconvolution under the conditions a) and b).

    Interactions between ESD protection devices and other components of a chip can lead to complex and not easily anticipated discharge bevahior. Triggering of a protection MOSFET is equivalent to the closing of a fast switch and can cause substantial transient discharge currents. The peak value of this current depends on the chip capacitance, resistance, properties of the protection clamp, etc. Careful optimization of the protection circuit is therefore necessary to avoid current overstress and circuit failure.

    This paper describes a new context clustering technique for average voice model, which is a set of speaker independent speech synthesis units. In the technique, we first train speaker dependent models using multi-speaker speech database, and then construct a decision tree common to these speaker dependent models for context clustering. When a node of the decision tree is split, only the context related questions which are applicable to all speaker dependent models are adopted. As a result, every node of the decision tree always has training data of all speakers. After construction of the decision tree, all speaker dependent models are clustered using the common decision tree and a speaker independent model, i.e., an average voice model is obtained by combining speaker dependent models. From the results of subjective tests, we show that the average voice models trained using the proposed technique can generate more natural sounding speech than the conventional average voice models.

    Changing vehicle structures and backgrounds makes it very difficult to correctly extract a license plate region from a vehicle image. In this paper, we propose a simple method to extract the license plate region using edge properties of wavelet subband. The High Frequency Subband (HFS) of an image has edge information for each direction. Edge information is concentrated in each direction of the Headlight-Radiator-Headlight (H-R-H) and the license plate region compared to other regions in the vehicle image. This paper shows a license plate region extraction method using these edge properties and our experimental results with various vehicle images.

    As a typical planar antenna in Japan, a microstrip antenna and radial line slot antenna are chosen and some original technologies are introduced for them. About the microstrip antenna, the analyzing method is described first and the method based on the theory of microstrip planar circuit born in Japan is introduced. According to the formulas derived by this method, the design procedure considering the bandwidth is established. In addition, it is shown clearly that a microstrip antenna can produce the circular polarizations at two kinds of frequencies with a single feed. Furthermore, two kinds of broadband techniques born in Japan are picked up. About other unique microstrip antennas, they may be introduced in a suitable section each time. As for the RLSA, the history on invention is briefly presented. The radiation mechanisms depending on the slot-set arrangement and the excitation mode are discussed. The slot-coupling analysis to simulate the excitation of a two-dimensional uniformly-excited slot array is explained. The simple design based on the operation with traveling-wave propagation is also described. The technical progress to keep high efficiency in a wide gain range for satellite-TV reception is reviewed. Extensions of the RLSAs to millimeter-wave bands and plasma etching systems are finally summarized.
