  • A Novel FEC Scheme for Differentially Detected QPSK Signals in Mobile Computing Using High-Speed Wireless Access

    This paper proposes a novel FEC (forward error correction) scheme for high-speed wireless systems aiming at mobile computing applications. The proposed scheme combines inner nonredundant error correction with outer parallel encoding random FEC for differentially detected QPSK (quadrature phase shift keying) signals. This paper, first, examines error patterns after the differential detection with nonredundant error correction and reveals that particular double symbol errors occur with relatively high probability. To improve the outer FEC performance degradation due to the double symbol errors, the proposed scheme uses I and Q channel serial to parallel conversion in the transmission side and parallel to serial conversion in the receiving side. As a result, it enables to use simple FEC for the outer parallel encoding random FEC without interleaving. Computer simulation results show the proposed scheme employing one bit correction BCH coding obtains a required Eb/No improvement of 1.2 dB at a Pe of 10-5 compared to that with the same memory size interleaving in an AWGN environment. Moreover, in a Rician fading environment where directional beam antennas are assumed to be used to improve the degradation due to severe multipath signals, an overall Eb/No improvement at Pe of 10-5 of 3.0 dB is achieved compared to simple differential detection when the condition of delay spread of 5 nsec, carrier to multipath signal power ratio of 20 dB and Doppler frequency at 20 GHz band of 150 Hz.

    Based on a recent remarkable development of digital beamforming (DBF) antenna technologies, we propose a new concept of kaleidoscopic antenna, we call it "software antenna," which is a more general one extending DBF schemes. The software antenna instantly reconfigures itself adapting its software and hardware to changes in the radio-environment. To realize the software antenna, the development of high-speed reconfigurable FPGAs is indispensable. As an intelligent antenna, we believe the software antenna could play a key role in the days of software radio having a function of mobile computing.

  • A Contour-Based Part Segmentation Algorithm

    Within the framework of a previously proposed vision system, a new part-segmentation algorithm, that breaks an object defined by its contour into its constituent parts, is presented. The contour is assumed to be obtained using an edge detector. This decomposition is achieved in two stages. The first stage is a preprocessing step which consists of extracting the convex dominant points (CDPs) of the contour. For this aim, we present a new technique which relaxes the compromise that exists in most classical methods for the selection of the width of the Gaussian filter. In the subsequent stage, the extracted CDPs are used to break the object into convex parts. This is performed as follows: among all the points of the contour only the CDPs are moved along their normals nutil they touch another moving CDP or a point on the contour. The results show that this part-segmentation algorithm is invariant to transformations such as rotation, scaling and shift in position of the object, which is very important for object recognition. The algorithm has been tested on many object contours, with and without noise and the advantages of the algorithm are listed in this paper. Our results are visually similar to a human intuitive decomposition of objects into their parts.

    Electroluminescent (EL) devices with mixed single layer that consist of fluorescent dyes, distylylbiphenyl derivative (DPVBi) and triphenylamine derivative (TPD), are studied. Blue light emission was observed from the device with DPVBi and TPD. White emission over 2,500 cd/m2 was observed from the devices with mixed single layer of DPVBi, TPD and dicyanomethylene derivative (DCM).

    Efforts have been cumulated to measure tooth mobility, in order to accurately characterize the mechanical features of periodontal tissues. This paper provides a totally new technique for accomplishing the task of measuring tooth displacement in 6 degrees of freedom, using a range finder. Its intraoral equipment comprises two elements, a moving polyhedron and a referential device, both of which are secured to a subject tooth and several other teeth splinted together. The polyhedron has 6 planar surfaces, each oriented in a distinctly different direction, with each plane facing an opposing range finder mounted on the referential part. If the sensor geometry is provided, the position and orientation of the movable part, vis-a-vis the reference, can be determined theoretically from the distances between all the range finders and their opposing surfaces. This computation was mathematically formulated as a non-linear optimization problem, the numerical solution of which can be obtained iteratively. Its error-propagation formula was also provided as a linear approximation.

  • New DQPSK Simultaneous Carrier and Bit-Timing Recovery Coherent Demodulator for Wireless Broadband Communication Systems

    This paper proposes a differentially-coded-quadrature-phase-shift-keying (DQPSK) coherent demodulator using a new simultaneous carrier and bit-timing recovery scheme (SCBR). The new DQPSK SCBR (DSCBR) scheme works with a frequently used preamble, whose baseband signal alternates between two diagonal decision points, for example, a repeated bit-series of "1001." With the DSCBR scheme, the proposed demodulator achieves a significantly agile carrier and bit-timing recovery using an open-loop approach with a one-part preamble. To illustrate this, a preamble of 8 symbols is applicable with the Eb/No degradation from the theory over AWGN of 0.2 dB. It is also shown that the proposed demodulator achieves an improvement in the required Eb/No of more than 2 dB over differential detection over Ricean fading communication channels. The channels are modeled for wireless broadband communication systems with directional antennas or line of sight (LOS) paths. This paper concludes that the proposed demodulator is a strong candidate for receivers in wireles broadband communication systems.

  • IP Mobility Support with IP-Squared (IP2) Encapsulation Technique

    This paper proposes a protocol to support mobility in the Internet with a new encapsulation technique. IP-squared (IP2). A basic idea to support mobility is as follows; 1) to define two IP addresses for each mobile host that indicate the host itself and its geographical location (logical and geographical identifiers), 2) to maintain an association of the logical identifier with the geographical identifier and 3) to continue communications between hosts by converting their logical identifiers to the corresponding geographical identifiers dynamically wherever they migrate. The association is called mobility binding. A goal of IP2 is to propose a mobility support feature which can simultaneously realize efficient routing paths to mobile hosts and less control traffics to maintain the mobility bindings into the current Internet Protocol without any modifications to both the conventional protocols and nodes. IP2 forms the efficient routing paths by enabling intermediate nodes to process the encapsulated datagrams. The key technique for this feature is a new header detection algorithm based on CRC checksum calculation and an effective usage of a header structure. Percentage of efficient routing paths can be adaptively controlled, depending on dispositions of the nodes which can en -and de capsulate datagrams appropriately based on the detection algorithm and the mobility bindings. The mobility binding must be updated whenever a mobile host migrates to another network. IP2 adopts an updating scheme combining self refreshment and on demand updating modes with taking a mechanism to form the efficient routing paths into considerations. It is shown that IP2 can acheive both an efficient routing path formation and a low traffic for mobility binding maintenance through analytical evaluations.

    This paper describes the characteristics of a one dimensional narrow-wall slotted waveguide array with a single-layer linear-to-circular polarization converter consisting of a dipole array. An external boundary value problem of one slot and three dipoles, which approximates the mutual coupling between the dipole array and an edge slot extending over three faces of a rectangular waveguide, is formulated and analyzed by the method of moments; design of polarization conversion is conducted for this model as a unit element. If every unit element has perfect circular polarization, grating lobes appear in the array pattern due to the alternating slot angle: these are suppressed in this paper by changing the dipole angle and degrading the axial ratio of the unit element. The validity of the design is confirmed by the measurements. The dipole array has negligible effects upon slot impedance; the polarization conversion for existing narrow-wall slotted arrays is realized by add-on dipole array.

  • Improvement of Luminous Efficiency in Barrier-Electrode Color ac Plasma Displays by Using a Double Protecting Layer

    In order to improve luminance and luminous efficiency of color ac plasma displays (PDPs), absorption characteristics of ultraviolet rays were investigated for dielectric materials from a viewpoint of protecting layer of ac PDPs. The double protecting layer of MgF2 and MgO is clarified to be excellent property to improve the optical performance of color ac PDPs. The double protecting layer of MgF2 and MgO was applied to the barrier-rib electrode color ac PDPs and resulted in high luminance and luminous efficiency of 1030 cd/m2 and 1.0lm/W, respectively.

  • An Evaluation Method for CRT Moire Patterns by Visibility Estimation and Image Simulation

    The high resolution CRT displays used for computer monitor and high performance TV often produce a pattern of bright and dark stripes on the screen called a moire pattern. The elimination of the moire is an important consideration in the CRT design. In this paper, we propose a method for evaluating a moire pattern based on the measurement data of the electron beam distribution. (1) We describe a mathematical expression of the process whereby a moire pattern is produced. By applying the electron beam measurement data into the formulae, precise value of the period and the contrast of a moire are calculated from the actual data of the electron beam profile and the distribution of apertures of the shadow mask. (2) The visibility of the moire is evaluated by plotting the calculation results on the contrastperiod plane, which consists of visible and invisible moire pattern regions based on experimental results of the psychological tests. (3) In addition to the analysis by calculation, the visibility of moire patterns can be visually examined by simulating moire patterns using the same data as above calculation. Since not only fundamental design parameters such as a shadow mask pitch and a scanning line pitch but also details of an electron beam profile such as a distortion or an asymmetry can be examined, a newly developed method contributes the efficiency of the CRT design.

  • Evaluation of SrS:CeN Phosphor Thin Films

    To improve the emission properties of blue-emitting phosphor layer, SrS:Ce, we evaluated CeN instead of conventional CeCl3 as a starting material. We evaluated the composition and the crystallinity of the thin films using RBS and XRD methods. We also evaluated luminescent properties of EL devices using SrS:Ce phosphor layer. From the results of RBS and XRD measurements, we found that the concentration of the oxygen impurity in SrS:Ce thin films was decreased and the crystallinity of SrS:Ce thin films was improved when CeN is used. These results mean that the degradation of SrS:Ce thin films can be prevented by the use CeN. The evaluation of luminescent properties, shows that the luminance of SrS:Ce EL device is increased by the use of CeN.

    This paper describes a nondestructive measurement method for complex permittivity of dielectric plates at 2 GHz, using a cylindrical cavity resonator. The resonator is divided into two parts at the center. Two dielectric plates are symmetrically loaded around the center of the cavity. These plates have high permittivity of 45. A dielectric plate specimen is clamped with these halves. The values of relative permittivity ε and loss tangent tanδ of the specimen are obtained from the resonant frequency and unloaded Q-value of TE011 mode. Measured results of various materials are compared with those values obtained at 3 and 10 GHz by other cavity resonator method. An edge effect is taken into account by a reference method, using measurement data of a sapphire plate. The errors of the present method are smaller than 1% and 2-310-5 for ε and tanδ, respectively.

  • Performance Evaluation of DS/CDMA Hybrid Acquisition in Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channel

    In this paper, the evaluation of a hybrid acquisition performance has been considered for the pilot signal in direct sequence code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) forward link. The hybrid acquisition is introduced by the combination of two schemes, parallel and serial acquisitions. The mean acquisition time of the hybrid acquisition scheme is derived to consider both case 1 (the correct code-phase offsets ae included in one subset) and case 2 (the correct code-phase offsets exist at the boundary of two subsets), which are caused by the distribution of the correct code-phase offsets between two subsets. Detection, false alarm, and miss probabilities are derived for the cases of multiple correct code-phase offsets and multipath Rayleigh fading channel. Results are provided for the acquisition performance with respect to system design parameters such as postdetection integration length in the search and verification modes, subset size, and number of I/Q noncoherent correlators. Also, comparision between hybrid acquisition and parallel acquisition under the same hardware complexity is provided in terms of the minimum mean acquisition time.

    High-speed display of 3-D objects in virtual reality environments is one of the currently important subjects. Shape simplification is considered an efficient method. This paper presents a method of hierarchical cube-based segmentation for shape simplification and multiresolution model construction. The relations among shape simplification, resolution and visual distance are derived firstly. The first level model is generated from scattered range data by cube-base segmentation with the first level cube size. Multiresolution models are then generated by re-sampling polygonal patch vertices of each former level model with hierarchical cube-based segmentation structure. The results show that the algorithm is efficient for constructing multiresolution models of free-form shape 3-D objects from scattered range data and high compression ratio can be obtained with little noticeable difference during the visualization.

    This paper proposes the reserved idle signal multiple access with collision resolution (R-ISMA/CR) protocol, which can maintain stability without being influenced by the retransmission probability. The R-ISMA/CR makes use of the multi-idle signals at the base station and the manipulating counter at the terminals. The performance of this protocol is evaluated by using the maximum throughput analysis and simulations.

    A new cost function based on multi-band decomposition of the estimation error and application of a different step-size for each band is used in connection with the least-mean-square criterion to improve the fidelity of estimates as compared to those obtained with conventional least-mean-square adaptive algorithms. The basic new idea is to trade off time and frequency resolutions of the adaptive algorithm along the frequency domain by using different step-sizes in the analysis of distinct frequencies in accordance with the frequency-localized statistical behavior of the imput signal. The mathematical background for a stochatic approach to the multi-band decomposition-based scheme is presented and algorithms with fixed and variable step-sizes are derived. Computer experiments compare the performance of multiband and conventional least-mean-square methods when applied to system identification.

  • An Improvement of PDP Picture Quality by Using a Modified-Binary-Coded Scheme with a 3D Scattering of Motional Artifacts

    When moving images are displayed on color PDPs, motional artifacts such as disturbances of gray scales and colors are often observed. Reduction of the disturbances is essential in achieving PDPs with acceptable picture quality for TV use. The moving picture quality has been improved by using a modified-binary-coded light-emission-period scheme and a 3dimensional (2D in space and 1D in time) scattering technique. In the 10-sub-field modified-binary-code scheme for 256 gray level expression, sub-field B (of period equivalent to 64) and C (128) of conventional 8-sub-field binary-coded scheme are added and then re-distributed into four sub-fields D (48). The modifiedbinary-coded scheme therefore has the light-emitting-period ratio 1:2:4:8:16:32:48:48:48:48. The maximum period, 128 of the conventional, is reduced to 48. By using the modified-binary-coded scheme, the motional artifacts are reduced significantly, but still perceptible because they appear in forms of continuous lines. In order to make the disturbance less conspicuous, a 3D scattering technique is introduced. The technique has been made possible because of the redundancies of the modified-binary-coded scheme: namely, (1) the position of sub-field-block A (63) can be placed at one of the five positions among four sub-fields D (48), (2) there are various choices when newly assigning one of the four sub-fields D, (3) one can arbitrarily choose whether or not to assign a new sub-field D between the gray levels 48-63, 96-111, 144-160, and 192-207. By randomly selecting one of these emission patterns, the disturbances change their forms from continuous lines to scattered dots. The randomization can be performed at each horizontal line of the display, at each vertical line, at each pixel, of at each TV field. An appreciable improvement of moving picture quality has been realized without influencing the still image.

  • Performance of Diversity Combining Scheme Using Simplified Weighting Factor

    Maximal-ratio combining (MRC), which maximizes the carrier to noise ratio (CNR) of the combined signal, generally requires envelope detection and multiplication having linear characteristic over a wide dynamic range to generate a weighting factor for each branch. In this paper, we propose a simplified two-branch diversity combining scheme without linear envelope detection. The proposed scheme, called "level comparison weighted combining (LCWC),"is simplified in a manner that its weighting factor for each branch is generated from hard-decision results of comparing signal envelopes between two branches. Performance of LCWC is evaluated by computer simulation and laboratory experiment, which shows that its diversity gain is almost identical to that of MRC in a Rayleigh fading channel.

    An extension is made for a set of systems that have a quadratic Lyapunov function in common for the purpose of analysis and design. The nominal set of system matrices comprises stable symmetric matricies, which admit a hyperspherical Lyapunov function. Based on stability robustness results, sets of matrices are constructed so that they share the same Lyapunov function with the nominal ones.

    This paper describes a delay control scheme for synchronous detection of an orthogonal coding multi-carrier CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) system. The delay control scheme estimates transmission timing of data from each mobile station. At a base station, delay time is obtained by detecting phase shift value of the preamble signal from each mobile station. The estimated transmission timing information is sent from base station to each mobile station and the mobile station then adjusts its transmission timing. Simulation results clarified that Bit Error Rate (BER) is 2.510-3 at 19dB of Eb/No under conditions of 29.4 msec initial delay time, 32kbit/sec data rate, 16 subchannels and 100Hz of fading frequency.
