This paper studies the performance of the quantitative RF power variation in Radio-over-Fiber beam forming system utilizing a phased array-antenna integrating photo-diodes in downlink network for next generation millimeter wave band radio access. Firstly, we described details of fabrication of an integrated photonic array-antenna (IPA), where a 60GHz patch antenna 4×2 array and high-speed photo-diodes were integrated into a substrate. We evaluated RF transmission efficiency as an IPA system for Radio-over-Fiber (RoF)-based mobile front hall architecture with remote antenna beam forming capability. We clarified the characteristics of discrete and integrated devices such as an intensity modulator (IM), an optical fiber and the IPA and calculated RF power radiated from the IPA taking account of the measured data of the devices. Based on the experimental results on RF tone signal transmission by utilizing the IPA, attainable transmission distance of wireless communication by improvement and optimization of the used devices was discussed. We deduced that the antenna could output sufficient power when we consider that the cell size of the future mobile communication systems would be around 100 meters or smaller.

As IT systems, including network systems using SDN/NFV technologies, become large-scaled and complicated, the cost of system management also increases rapidly. Network operators have to maintain their workflow in constructing and consistently updating such complex systems, and thus these management tasks in generating system update plan are desired to be automated. Declarative system update with state space search is a promising approach to enable this automation, however, the current methods is not enough scalable to practical systems. In this paper, we propose a novel heuristic approach to greatly reduce computation time to solve system update procedure for practical systems. Our heuristics accounts for structural bottleneck of the system update and advance search to resolve bottlenecks of current system states. This paper includes the following contributions: (1) formal definition of a novel heuristic function specialized to system update for A* search algorithm, (2) proofs that our heuristic function is consistent, i.e., A* algorithm with our heuristics returns a correct optimal solution and can omit repeatedly expansion of nodes in search spaces, and (3) results of performance evaluation of our heuristics. We evaluate the proposed algorithm in two cases; upgrading running hypervisor and rolling update of running VMs. The results show that computation time to solve system update plan for a system with 100 VMs does not exceed several minutes, whereas the conventional algorithm is only applicable for a very small system.

The low-altitude target detection remains a difficult problem in MIMO radar. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive two-step Bayesian generalized likelihood ratio test (TB-GLRT) detection algorithm for low-altitude target detection. By defining the compound channel scattering coefficient and applying the K distributed clutter model, the signal models for different radars in low-altitude environment are established. Then, aiming at the problem that the integrals are too complex to yield a closed-form Neyman-Pearson detector, we assume prior knowledge of the channel scattering coefficient and clutter to design an adaptive two-step Bayesian GLRT algorithm for low-altitude target detection. Monte Carlo simulation results verify that the proposed detector has better performance than the square law detector, GLRT detector or Bayesian GLRT detector in low-altitude environment. With the TB-GLRT detector, the maximum detection probability can reach 70% when SNR=0dB and ν=1. Simulations also verify that the multipath effect shows positive influence on detection when SNR<5dB, and when SNR>10dB, the multipath effect shows negative influence on detection. When SNR>0dB, the MIMO radar, which keeps a detection probability over 70% with the proposed algorithm, has the best detection performance. Besides, the detection performance gets improved with the decrease of sea clutter fluctuation level.

We formulate the design of an optimal quantizer as an optimization problem that finds the quantization indices that minimize quantization error. As a solution of the optimization problem, an approach based on dynamic programming, which is called DP quantization, is proposed. It is observed that quantized signals do not always contain all kinds of signal values which can be represented with given bit-depth. This property is called amplitude sparseness. Because quantization is the amplitude discretization of signal value, amplitude sparseness is closely related to quantizer design. Signal values with zero frequency do not impact quantization error, so there is the potential to reduce the complexity of the optimal quantizer by not computing signal values that have zero frequency. However, conventional methods for DP quantization were not designed to consider amplitude sparseness, and so fail to reduce complexity. The proposed algorithm offers a reduced complexity optimal quantizer that minimizes quantization error while addressing amplitude sparseness. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve complexity reduction over conventional DP quantization by 82.9 to 84.2% on average.

A class of multimodulus algorithms (MMA(p)) optimized by an optimal step-size (OS) for blind equalization are firstly investigated in this letter. The multimodulus (MM) criterion is essentially a split cost function that separately implements the real and imaginary part of the signal, hence the phase can be recovered jointly with equalization. More importantly, the step-size leading to the minimum of the MM criterion along the search direction can be obtained algebraically among the roots of a higher-order polynomial at each iteration, thus a robust optimal step-size multimodulus algorithm (OS-MMA(p)) is developed. Experimental results demonstrate improved performance of the proposed algorithm in mitigating the inter-symbol interference (ISI) compared with the OS constant modulus algorithm (OS-CMA). Besides, the computational complexity can be reduced by the proposed OS-MMA(2) algorithm.

As an emerging and promising technique, device-free localization (DFL) has drawn considerable attention in recent years. By exploiting the inherent spatial sparsity of target localization, the compressive sensing (CS) theory has been applied in DFL to reduce the number of measurements. In practical scenarios, a prior knowledge about target locations is usually available, which can be obtained by coarse localization or tracking techniques. Among existing CS-based DFL approaches, however, few works consider the utilization of prior knowledge. To make use of the prior knowledge that is partly or erroneous, this paper proposes a novel faulty prior knowledge aided multi-target device-free localization (FPK-DFL) method. It first incorporates the faulty prior knowledge into a three-layer hierarchical prior model. Then, it estimates location vector and learns model parameters under a variational Bayesian inference (VBI) framework. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve the localization accuracy by taking advantage of the faulty prior knowledge.

Radar-absorbent materials (RAM) with various characteristics, such as broadband, oblique-incidence, and polarization characteristics, have been developed according to applications in recent years. This paper presents the optimized design method of two flat layers RAM with both broadband and oblique-incidence characteristics for the required RAM performance. The oblique-incidence characteristics mean that the RAM is possible to absorb radio waves continuously up to the maximum incidence angle. The index of the wave-absorption amount is 20dB, corresponding to an absorption rate of 99%. Because determination of the electrical material constant of each layer is the most important task with respect to the received frequency and the incidence angle, we optimized the values by using Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II). Two types of flat-layer RAM composed of dielectric and magnetic materials were designed and their characteristics were evaluated. Consequently, it was confirmed that oblique-incidence characteristics were better for the RAM composed of dielectric materials. The dielectric RAM achieved an incidence angle of up to 60° with broadband characteristics and a relative bandwidth of 77.01% at the transverse-magnetic (TM) wave incidence. In addition, the magnetic RAM could lower the minimum frequency of the system more than the dielectric RAM. The minimum frequency of the magnetic RAM was 1.38GHz with a relative bandwidth of 174.18% at TM-wave incidence and an incidence angle of 45°. We confirmed that it is possible to design RAM with broadband characteristics and continuous oblique-incidence characteristics by using the proposed method.

In this letter, we propose a new blind source separation method, independent low-rank matrix analysis based on generalized Kullback-Leibler divergence. This method assumes a time-frequency-varying complex Poisson distribution as the source generative model, which yields convex optimization in the spectrogram estimation. The experimental evaluation confirms the proposed method's efficacy.

To optimize the performance of FIR filters that have low computation complexity, this paper proposes a hybrid design consisting of two optimization levels. The first optimization level is based on cyclic-shift synthesis, in which all possible sub filters (or windowed sub filters) with distinct cycle shifts are averaged to generate a synthesized filter. Due to the fact that the ripples of these sub filters' transfer curves can be individually compensated, this synthesized filter attains improved performance (besides two uprushes occur on the edges of a transition band) and thus this synthesis actually plays the role of ‘natural optimization’. Furthermore, this synthesis process can be equivalently summarized into a 3-step closed-form procedure, which converts the multi-variable optimization into a single-variable optimization. Hence, to suppress the uprushes, what the second optimization level (by Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm) needs to do is no more than searching for the optimum transition point which incurs only minimal complexity . Owning to the combination between the cyclic-shift synthesis and DE algorithm, unlike the regular evolutionary computing schemes, our hybrid design is more attractive due to its narrowed search space and higher convergence speed . Numerical results also show that the proposed design is superior to the conventional DE design in both filter performance and design efficiency, and it is comparable to the Remez design.

This paper proposes a consensus-based subgradient method under a common constraint set with switching undirected graphs. In the proposed method, each agent has a state and an auxiliary variable as the estimates of an optimal solution and accumulated information of past gradients of neighbor agents. We show that the states of all agents asymptotically converge to one of the optimal solutions of the convex optimization problem. The simulation results show that the proposed consensus-based algorithm with accumulated subgradient information achieves faster convergence than the standard subgradient algorithm.

This paper proposes a novel distributed proximal minimization algorithm for constrained optimization problems over fixed strongly connected networks. At each iteration, each agent updates its own state by evaluating a proximal operator of its objective function under a constraint set and compensating the unbalancing due to unidirectional communications. We show that the states of all agents asymptotically converge to one of the optimal solutions. Numerical results are shown to confirm the validity of the proposed method.

When time difference of arrival (TDOA)-based bearing measurements are used in passive triangulation, the accuracy of localization depends on the geometric relationship between the emitter and the sensors. In particular, the localization accuracy varies with the geometric conditions in TDOA-based direction finding (DF) for bearing measurement and lines of bearing (LOBs) crossing for triangulation. To obtain an accurate estimate in passive triangulation using TDOA-based bearing measurements, we shall use these bearings selectively by considering geometric dilution of precision (GDOP) between the emitter and the sensors. To achieve this goal, we first define two GDOPs related to TDOA-based DF and LOBs crossing geometries, and then propose a new hybrid GDOP by combining these GDOPs for a better selection of bearings. Subsequently, two bearings with the lowest hybrid GDOP condition are chosen as the inputs to a triangulation localization algorithm. In simulations, the proposed method shows its enhancement to the localization accuracy.

On surfaces of tris-(8-hydroxyquinolate) aluminum (Alq) and tris(7-propyl-8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (Al7p) thin-films, positive and negative polarization charges appear, respectively, owing to spontaneous orientation of these polar molecules. Alq is a typical electron transport material where electrons are injected from cathode. Because the polarization charge exists at the Alq/cathode interface, it is likely that it affects the electron injection process because of Coulomb interaction. In order to evaluate an impact of polarization charge on electron injection from cathode, electron only devices (EODs) composed of Alq or Al7p were prepared and evaluated by displacement current measurement. We found that Alq-EOD has lower resistance than Al7p-EOD, indicating that the positive polarization charge at Alq/cathode interface enhances the electron injection due to Coulomb attraction, while the electron injection is suppressed by the negative polarization charge at the Al7p/Al interface. These results clearly suggest that it is necessary to design organic semiconductor devices by taking polarization charge into account.

In this letter, a construction of asymmetric Gaussian integer zero correlation zone (ZCZ) sequence sets is presented based on interleaving and filtering. The proposed approach can provide optimal or almost optimal single Gaussian integer ZCZ sequence sets. In addition, arbitrary two sequences from different sets have inter-set zero cross-correlation zone (ZCCZ). The resultant sequence sets can be used in the multi-cell QS-CDMA system to reduce the inter-cell interference and increase the transmission data.

In this paper, a printed inverted-F antenna for radiating circularly polarized wave around its resonant frequency is proposed. To get good axial ratio at the frequency band with 10dB-return loss, a rectangular element is loaded at the feeding line perpendicularly. The axial ratio and the frequency giving the minimum axial ratio can be adjusted by the ratio of the length to the width of the whole antenna and by the dimension of the loaded rectangular element. The operational principle for circular polarization is explained using the electric current distributions. Moreover, the approach of the enhancement for the bandwidth is discussed. The simulated and measured bandwidths of the 10dB-return loss with a 3dB-axial ratio are 2.375GHz-2.591GHz (216MHz) and 2.350-2.534GHz (184MHz), respectively. The proposed antenna's dimension is 0.067λ2c (λc is the wavelength at the center frequency). The proposed antenna is compact and planar, and is therefore useful for circular polarization in the ISM band.

We propose a novel bit error rate (BER) analysis model of weighted-type fractional Fourier transform (WFRFT)-based systems with WFRFT order offset Δα. By using the traditional BPSK BER analysis method, we deduce the equivalent signal noise ratio (SNR), model the interference in the channel as a Gaussian noise with non-zero mean, and provide a theoretical BER expression of the proposed system. Simulation results show that its theoretical BER performance well matches the empirical performance, which demonstrates that the theoretical BER analysis proposed in this paper is reliable.

This paper proposes optimal beam patterns of analog beamforming for SU (Single User) massive MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) transmission systems. For hybrid beamforming in SU massive MIMO systems, there are several design parameters such as beam patterns, the number of beams (streams), the shape of array antennas, and so on. In conventional hybrid beamforming, rectangular patch array antennas implemented on a planar surface with linear phase shift beam patterns have been used widely. However, it remains unclear whether existing configurations are optimal or not. Therefore, we propose a method using OBPB (Optimal Beam Projection Beamforming) for designing configuration parameters of the hybrid beamforming. By using the method, the optimal beam patterns are derived first, and are projected on the assumed surface to calculate the achievable number of streams and the resulting channel capacity. The results indicate OBPB with a spherical surface yields at least 3.5 times higher channel capacity than conventional configurations.

Photophysical properties of water-soluble porphyrin were studied in aqueous solutions with/without DNA and in DNA solid films. Ultrathin films were prepared from aqueous DNA solutions by a spin-coating method on glass or on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Remarkable enhancement of phosphorescence was observed for porphyrin immobilized in DNA films spin-coated on AuNPs, which was attributed to the electric field enhancement and the increased radiative rate by localized surface plasmon resonance of AuNPs.
