With the rapid increase in IoT (Internet of Things) applications, more sensor devices, generating periodic data flows whose packets are transmitted at regular intervals, are being incorporated into WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). However, packet collision caused by the hidden node problem is becoming serious, particularly in large-scale multi-hop WSNs. Moreover, focusing on periodic data flows, continuous packet collisions among periodic data flows occur if the periodic packet transmission phases become synchronized. In this paper, we tackle the compounded negative effect of the hidden node problem and the continuous collision problem among periodic data flows. As this is a complex variant of the hidden node problem, there is no simple and well-studied solution. To solve this problem, we propose a new MAC layer mechanism. The proposed method predicts a future risky duration during which a collision can be caused by hidden nodes by taking into account the periodic characteristics of data packet generation. In the risky duration, each sensor node stops transmitting data packets in order to avoid collisions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that considers the compounded effect of hidden nodes and continuous collisions among periodic data flows. Other advantages of the proposed method include eliminating the need for any new control packets and it can be implemented in widely-diffused IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4 devices.

Distributed compressive video sensing (DCVS) has received considerable attention due to its potential in source-limited communication, e.g., wireless video sensor networks (WVSNs). Multi-hypothesis (MH) prediction, which treats the target block as a linear combination of hypotheses, is a state-of-the-art technique in DCVS. The common approach is under the supposition that blocks that are dissimilar from the target block are given lower weights than blocks that are more similar. This assumption can yield acceptable reconstruction quality, but it is not suitable for scenarios with more details. In this paper, based on the joint sparsity model (JSM), the authors present a Tikhonov-regularized MH prediction scheme in which the most similar block provides the similar common portion and the others blocks provide respective unique portions, differing from the common supposition. Specifically, a new scheme for generating hypotheses and a Euclidean distance-based metric for the regularized term are proposed. Compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, the authors show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme when there are a limited number of hypotheses.
Envelope tracking (ET) technology provides the potential for achieving high efficiency in power amplifiers (PAs) with high peak-to-average ratio (PAR) signals. Envelope amplifiers with high fidelity, high efficiency, and wide bandwidth are critical components for the widespread application of envelope tracking. This paper presents the design of a linear-assisted switching buck converter for use in an envelope amplifier. To effectively leverage the high efficiency of buck converters and the wide bandwidth capabilities of linear amplifiers, a parallel combination of these two devices is employed in this work. A novel current-sense constant-on-time (COT) controller is proposed to coordinate this hybrid power supply. The combination mainly enables the switching converter to provide the average power required by the PA with high efficiency, while the wideband linear amplifier provides a wide range of dynamic voltages. The technique improves the efficiency of the envelope amplifier, especially for applications requiring high PAR with wider bandwidth signals. Measurement of the envelope amplifier showed an efficiency of approximately 77% with 10 W output power using LTE downlink signals. The overall ET system was demonstrated by using a GaN PA. The measured average power-added efficiency of the amplifier reached above 45% for an LTE modulated signal with 20 MHz bandwidth and PAR of 8.0 dB, at an average output power of 5 W and gain of 10.1 dB. The measured normalized RMS error is below 2.1% with adjacent channel leakage ratio of -48 dBc at an offset frequency of 20 MHz.

In this letter, a polarization filtering based transmission (PFBT) scheme is proposed to enhance the spectrum efficiency in wireless communications. In such scheme, the information is divided into several parts and each is conveyed by a polarized signal with a unique polarization state (PS). Then, the polarized signals are added up and transmitted by the dual-polarized antenna. At the receiver side, the oblique projection polarization filters (OPPFs) are adopted to separate each polarized signal. Thus, they can be demodulated separately. We mainly focus on the construction methods of the OPPF matrix when the number of the separate parts is 2 and 3 and evaluate the performance in terms of the capacity and the bit error rate. In addition, we also discuss the probability of the signal separation when the number of the separate parts is equal or greater than 4. Theoretical results and simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

A retrodirective system utilizing harmonic reradiation from a rectenna is developed and verified for long-range wireless power transfer applications, such as low-power or battery-less devices and lightweight aerial vehicles. The second harmonic generated by the rectifying circuit is used instead of a pilot signal, and thus an oscillator for creating the pilot signal is not required. The proposed retrodirective system consists of a 2.45 GHz transmitter with a two-element phased array antenna, a 4.9 GHz direction-of-arrival (DoA) estimation system, a phase control system, and a rectenna. The rectenna, consisting of a half-wave dipole antenna, receives microwave power from the 2.45 GHz transmitter and reradiates the harmonic toward the 4.9 GHz DoA estimation system. The rectenna characteristics and experimental demonstrations of the proposed retrodirective system are described. From measurement results, the dc output power pattern for the developed retrodirective system is in good agreement with that obtained using manual beam steering. The measured DoA estimation errors are within the range of -2.4° to 4.8°.

In this work, we investigate a joint transmit beamforming and artificial noise (AN) covariance matrix design in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio (CR) downlink network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), where the malicious energy receivers (ERs) may decode the desired information and hence can be treated as potential eavesdroppers (Eves). In order to improve the secure performance of the transmission, AN is embedded to the information-bearing signal, which acts as interference to the Eves and provides energy to all receivers. Specifically, this joint design is studied under a practical non-linear energy harvesting (EH) model, our aim is to maximize the secrecy rate at the SR subject to the transmit power budget, EH constraints and quality of service (QoS) requirement. The original problem is not convex and challenging to be solved. To circumvent its intractability, an equivalent reformulation of this secrecy rate maximization (SRM) problem is introduced, wherein the resulting problem is primal decomposable and thus can be handled by alternately solving two convex subproblems. Finally, numerical results are presented to verify the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.

This work presents the lowest power consumption sub-mm2 supply-modulated OOK transmitter for self-powering a continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) contact lens. By combining the transmitter with a glucose fuel cell that functions as both the power source and a sensing transducer, a self-powered CGM contact lens was developed. The 385×385μm2 test chip implemented in 65-nm standard CMOS technology operates at 270pW with a supply voltage of 0.165V. Self-powered operation of the transmitter using a 2×2mm2 solid-state glucose fuel cell was thus demonstrated.

Recently, ZigBee has been attracting attention as a low-power and short-range wireless communication standard. In ZigBee networks, it is necessary to suppress frame transfer load because ZigBee needs to operate within severe capacity constraints and with low power consumption. However, in the typical environments in which ZigBee is used, such as smart home networks, WLAN (Wireless LAN) generally coexists, and radio interference occurs between the two networks. Existing studies focused on only interference avoidance. On the other hand, in this paper, we focus on adaptive cooperation between ZigBee network and WLAN. Specifically, from the viewpoints of WLANs that have wider communication range but have many idle periods in some environments like homes, we propose and study a hop count reduction method of ZigBee frame transfer by partially employing WLAN communication to transfer ZigBee frames. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that considers the adaptive cooperation between ZigBee network and WLAN, where some ZigBee frames are transferred via WLAN to the sink. This is a completely new approach different from existing interference avoidance approaches. Then, we evaluate the hop count reduction by considering the number and the positions of relay points to transfer ZigBee frames to WLAN, and ZigBee tree topology for frame transfer routes. Through the evaluation, two realistic deployment policies of the relay points are derived. Finally, as specific advantages from the hop count reduction, we demonstrate the performance improvement about sink arrival ratio and end-to-end transfer delay of ZigBee frames, and energy consumption.
The compressive sensing has been applied to develop an effective framework for simultaneously localizing multiple targets in wireless sensor networks. Nevertheless, existing methods implicitly use analog measurements, which have infinite bit precision. In this letter, we focus on off-grid target localization using quantized measurements with only several bits. To address this, we propose a novel localization framework for jointly estimating target locations and dealing with quantization errors, based on the novel application of the variational Bayesian Expectation-Maximization methodology. Simulation results highlight its superior performance.

Communication reliability and energy efficiency are important issues that have to be carefully considered in WBAN design. Due to the large path loss variation of the WBAN channel, transmission power control, which adaptively adjusts the radio transmit power to suit the channel condition, is considered in this paper. Human motion is one of the dominant factors that affect the channel characteristics in WBAN. Therefore, this paper introduces motion-aware temporal correlation model-based transmission power control that combines human motion classification and transmission power control to provide an effective approach to realizing reliable and energy-efficient WBAN communication. The human motion classification adopted in this study uses only the received signal strength to identify the human motion; no additional tool is required. The knowledge of human motion is then used to accurately estimate the channel condition and suitably select the transmit power. A performance evaluation shows that the proposed method works well both in the low and high WBAN network loads. Compared to using the fixed Tx power of -5dBm, the proposed method had similar packet loss rate but 20-28 and 27-33 percent lower average energy consumption for the low network traffic and high network traffic cases, respectively.

Wireless Full-Duplex (FD) communication can double the point-to-point throughput. To obtain the full benefits of the FD technique in multi-hop networks, its potential throughput performance in multi-hop networks should be clarified qualitatively and quantitatively. Developing an analytical model for FD multi-hop networks is effective and useful for not only clarifying such network dynamics but also developing the optimal protocol design. However, generalized analytical expression for the end-to-end throughput of FD multi-hop networks has not been proposed. This paper proposes analytical expressions for the end-to-end throughput of string-topology wireless FD multi-hop networks. Our approach is to integrate with the analytical model of the airtime expression, which is an effective analytical approach of the throughput analysis for Half-Duplex (HD) multi-hop networks, and the Markov-chain model considering the FD MAC operation. The proposed model clarify the detailed effect of the FD MAC operation on the throughput performance in multi-hop networks. In particular, it can obtain the end-to-end throughput of FD multi-hop networks for arbitrary number of hops, arbitrary payload size and arbitrary value of the minimum contention window. The analytical expressions verified by comparisons with the simulation results. From the comparisons with the results in HD multi-hop networks, we confirm the effectiveness of the FD communication in multi-hop networks.

In this study, under the assumption that a robot (1) has a remotely controllable yawing camera and (2) moves in a uniform linear motion, we propose and investigate how to improve the target recognition rate with the camera, by using wireless feedback loop control. We derive the allowable data rate theoretically, and, from the viewpoint of error and delay control, we propose and evaluate QoS-Hybrid ARQ schemes under data rate constraints. Specifically, the theoretical analyses derive the maximum data rate for sensing and control based on the channel capacity is derived with the Shannon-Hartley theorem and the path-loss channel model inside the human body, i.e. CM2 in IEEE 802.15.6 standard. Then, the adaptive error and delay control schemes, i.e. QoS-HARQ, are proposed considering the two constraints: the maximum data rate and the velocity of the camera's movement. For the performance evaluations, with the 3D robot simulator GAZEBO, we evaluated our proposed schemes in the two scenarios: the static environment and the dynamic environment. The results yield insights into how to improve the recognition rate considerably in each situation.
This letter studies secure communication in a wireless powered communication network with a full-duplex destination node, who applies either power splitting (PS) or time switching (TS) to coordinate energy harvesting and information decoding of received signals and transmits jamming signals to the eavesdropper using the harvested energy. The secrecy rate is maximized by optimizing PS or TS ratio and power allocation. We propose iterative algorithms with power allocation optimized by the successive convex approximation method. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms are superior to other benchmark algorithms.

Wireless powered communication networks (WPCNs) utilize the wireless energy transfer (WET) technique to facilitate the wireless information transmission (WIT) of nodes. We propose a two-step iterative algorithm to maximize the sum throughput of the users in a MIMO WPCN with discrete signal inputs. Firstly, the optimal solution of a convex power allocation problem can be found given a fixed time allocation; Secondly, a semi closed form solution for the optimal time allocation is obtained when fixing the power allocation matrix. By optimizing the power allocation and time allocation alternately, the two-step algorithm converges to a local optimal point. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional schemes, which consider only Gaussian inputs.

Wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs) are expected to become key technologies supporting machine-to-machine (M2M) communication in the Internet of things (IoT) era. However, sensors must be able to provide high demand response (DR) levels despite severely limited battery power. Therefore, as part of efforts to achieve a high DR, we are working on research and development related to radio-on-demand sensor and actuator networks (ROD-SANs). ROD-SAN nodes are equipped with wake-up receivers that allow all nodes to stay in sleep mode for a long period of time, and transmit only after the receiver receives a wake-up signal. In addition, sender nodes can direct the receiver nodes to switch communication channels because the wake-up signal also includes information on the channel to use for communication between each other. However, as the number of nodes utilizing the same channel increases, frequent packet collisions occur, thereby degrading response performance. To reduce packet collisions, we propose an own-channel-utilization based channel switching (OCS) scheme, which is a modification of the average-channel-utilization based switching (ACS) as our previous works. The OCS scheme decides whether or not to switch channels based on a probability value that considers not only average-channel utilization of nearby nodes but also own-channel utilization. This approach permits node switching to other channels by considering the overall utilization states of all channels. In this paper, based on simulations, we show that our scheme can improve the delivery ratio by approximately 15% rather than ACS scheme.

This paper looks into the underlying RF energy harvesting issues at low input ambient power levels below 0 dBm where efficiency degradation is severe. The proposed design aims to improve the rectenna sensitivity, efficiency, and output DC power. In the same manner, we are using a straightforward and compact size rectenna design. The receiving antenna is a coplanar waveguide (CPW) slot monopole antenna with harmonic suppression property and a peak measured gain of 3 dBi. Also, an improved antenna radiation characteristics, e.g radiation pattern and gain covering the desired operating band (ISM 2.45 GHz), is observed. The rectifier is a voltage doubler circuit based on microstrip (MS) structure. Two architectures of rectenna were carefully designed, fabricated and tested. The first layout; antenna, and rectifier were fabricated separately and then connected using a connector. The peak efficiency (40% at -5 dBm) achieved is lower than expected. To improve the efficiency, a high compactness and simple integration between antenna and rectifier are achieved by using a smooth CPW-MS transition. This design shows improved conversion efficiency measurement results which typically agree with the simulation results. The measured peak conversion efficiency is 72% at RF power level of -7 dBm and a load resistance of 2 kΩ.

Real-time monitoring of heart rate (HR) and body temperature (BT) is crucial for the prognosis and the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and healthcare. Since current monitoring systems are too rigid and bulky, it is not easy to attach them to the human body. Also, their large current consumption limits the working time. In this paper, we develop a wireless sensor patch for HR and BT by integrating sensor chip, wireless communication chip, and electrodes on the flexible boards that is covered with non-toxic, but skin-friendly adhesive patch. Our experimental results reveal that the flexible wireless sensor patch can efficiently detect early diseases by monitoring the HR and BT in real time.

This paper presents a numerical study of the wireless channel characteristics of liver implants in a frequency range of 4.5-6.5GHz, considering different digital human phantoms by employing two inhomogeneous male and female models. Path loss data for in-body to on-body and in-body to off-body communication scenarios are provided. The influence of respiration-induced organ movement on signal attenuation is demonstrated. A narrower range of attenuation deviation is observed in the female model as compared to the male model. The path loss data in the female body is between 40-80dB which is around 5-10dB lower than the male model. Path loss data for the in-body to off-body scenario in both models suggest that in-body propagation is the main component of total path loss in the channel. The results demonstrate that channel characteristics are subject dependent, and thus indicate the need to take subject dependencies into consideration when investigating in-body communication channels.
