With the development of the IEEE 802.11 standard for wireless LANs, there has been an enormous increase in the usage of wireless LANs in factories, plants, and other industrial environments. In industrial applications, wireless LAN systems require high reliability for stable real-time communications. In this paper, we propose a multi-access-point (AP) diversity method that contributes to the realization of robust data transmissions toward realization of ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) in wireless LANs. The proposed method can obtain a diversity effect of multipaths with independent transmission errors and collisions without modification of the IEEE 802.11 standard or increasing overhead of communication resources. We evaluate the effects of the proposed method by numerical analysis, develop a prototype to demonstrate its feasibility, and perform experiments using the prototype in a factory wireless environment. These numerical evaluations and experiments show that the proposed method increases reliability and decreases transmission delay.

In recent years, wireless LANs (WLANs) are closely deployed which means they interfere with each other. Mobile stations (MSs) like smart phones that connect to such WLANs are also increasing. In such interfering environments, radio interference frequency depends on MS position. In addition, as MSs and their applications become diverse, frame generation rates from MSs are also becoming various. Thus, sufficient frame transmission opportunities should be assigned to MSs regardless of their radio interference frequencies and frame generation rates. One key technology to deal with this issue is uplink orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) transmission introduced in IEEE 802.11ax. However, existing works do not consider the differences of the interference frequencies and frame generation rates among MSs in an integrated manner. This paper proposes an uplink frame transmission method for interfering WLAN environments that effectively uses the OFDMA transmission to assign enough transmission opportunities to MSs regardless of their own interference frequencies and frame generation rates, while efficiently using the channel resource. Considering the combined problem, this proposed method allocates resource units (RUs), created by dividing the channel, to MSs. In addition, based on a mathematical analysis of required frame transmission duration, the proposed method flexibly selects the OFDMA transmission or conventional frame transmission with CSMA/CA, which is also not considered in the existing works.

This paper proposes a novel radio access scheme that uses duplicated transmission via multiple frequency channels to achieve mission critical Internet of Things (IoT) services requiring highly reliable wireless communications; the interference constraints that yield the required reliability are revealed. To achieve mission critical IoT services by wireless communication, it is necessary to improve reliability in addition to satisfying the required transmission delay time. Reliability is defined as the packet arrival rate without exceeding the desired transmission delay time. Traffic of the own system and interference from the other systems using the same frequency channel such as unlicensed bands degrades the reliability. One solution is the frequency/time diversity technique. However, these techniques may not achieve the required reliability because of the time taken to achieve the correct reception. This paper proposes a novel scheme that transmits duplicate packets utilizing multiple wireless interfaces over multiple frequency channels. It also proposes a suppressed duplicate transmission (SDT) scheme, which prevents the wastage of radio resources. The proposed scheme achieves the same reliable performance as the conventional scheme but has higher tolerance against interference than retransmission. We evaluate the relationship between the reliability and the occupation time ratio where the interference occupation time ratio is defined as the usage ratio of the frequency resources occupied by the other systems. We reveal the upper bound of the interference occupation time ratio for each frequency channel, which is needed if channel selection control is to achieve the required reliability.

In this paper, the effective Long Range (LoRa) based wireless sensor network is designed and implemented to provide the remote data sensing functions for the planned smart agricultural recycling rapid processing factory. The proposed wireless sensor network transmits the sensing data from various sensors, which measure the values of moisture, viscosity, pH, and electrical conductivity of agricultural organic wastes for the production and circulation of organic fertilizers. In the proposed wireless sensor network design, the LoRa transceiver module is used to provide data transmission functions at the sensor node, and the embedded platform by Raspberry Pi module is applied to support the gateway function. To design the cloud data server, the MySQL methodology is applied for the database management system with Apache software. The proposed wireless sensor network for data communication between the sensor node and the gateway supports a simple one-way data transmission scheme and three half-duplex two-way data communication schemes. By experiments, for the one-way data transmission scheme under the condition of sending one packet data every five seconds, the packet data loss rate approaches 0% when 1000 packet data is transmitted. For the proposed two-way data communication schemes, under the condition of sending one packet data every thirty seconds, the average packet data loss rates without and with the data-received confirmation at the gateway side can be 3.7% and 0%, respectively.

In this paper, we advocate applying the concept of content-based wake-up to distributed estimation in wireless sensor networks employing wake-up receivers. With distributed estimation, where sensing data of multiple nodes are used for estimating a target observation, the energy consumption can be reduced by ensuring that only a subset of nodes in the network transmit their data, such that the collected data can guarantee the required estimation accuracy. In this case, a sink needs to selectively wake up those sensor nodes whose data can contribute to the improvement of estimation accuracy. In this paper, we propose wake-up signaling called estimative sampling (ES) that can selectively activate the desired nodes by using content-based wake-up control. The ES method includes a mechanism that dynamically searches for the desired nodes over a distribution of sensing data. With numerical results obtained by computer simulations, we show that the distributed estimation with ES method achieves lower energy consumption than conventional identity-based wake-up while satisfying the required accuracy. We also show that the proposed dynamic mechanism finely controls the trade-off between delay and energy consumption to complete the distributed estimation.

Recently, new optimization machines based on non-silicon physical systems, such as quantum annealing machines, have been developed, and their commercialization has been started. These machines solve the problems by searching the state of the Ising spins, which minimizes the Ising Hamiltonian. Such a property of minimization of the Ising Hamiltonian can be applied to various combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, we introduce the coherent Ising machine (CIM), which can solve the problems in a milli-second order, and has higher performance than the quantum annealing machines especially on the problems with dense mutual connections in the corresponding Ising model. We explain how a target problem can be implemented on the CIM, based on the optimization scheme using the mutually connected neural networks. We apply the CIM to traveling salesman problems as an example benchmark, and show experimental results of the real machine of the CIM. We also apply the CIM to several combinatorial optimization problems in wireless communication systems, such as channel assignment problems. The CIM's ultra-fast optimization may enable a real-time optimization of various communication systems even in a dynamic communication environment.

In this paper, we propose new generation methods of two-dimensional (2D) optical zero-correlation zone (ZCZ) sequences with the high peak autocorrelation amplitude. The 2D optical ZCZ sequence consists of a pair of a binary sequence which takes 1 or 0 and a bi-phase sequence which takes 1 or -1, and has a zero-correlation zone in the two-dimensional correlation function. Because of these properties, the 2D optical ZCZ sequence is suitable for optical code-division multiple access (OCDMA) system using an LED array having a plurality of light-emitting elements arranged in a lattice pattern. The OCDMA system using the 2D optical ZCZ sequence can be increased the data rate and can be suppressed interference by the light of adjacent LEDs. By using the proposed generation methods, we can improve the peak autocorrelation amplitude of the sequence. This means that the BER performance of the OCDMA system using the sequence can be improved.

Stochastic geometry analysis of wireless backhaul networks with beamforming in roadside environments is provided. In particular, a new model to analyze antenna gains, interference, and coverage in roadside environments of wireless networks with Poisson point process deployment of BSs is proposed. The received interference from the BSs with wired backhaul (referred to as anchored BS or A-BS) and the coverage probability of a typical BS are analyzed under different approximations of the location of the serving A-BS and combined antenna gains. Considering the beamforming, the coverage probability based on the aggregate interference consisting of the direct interference from the A-BSs and reflected interference from the BSs with wireless backhaul is also derived.

A method is presented for increasing wireless LAN (WLAN) capacity in high-density environments with IEEE 802.11ax systems. We propose using coordinated scheduling of trigger frames based on our mobile cooperative control concept. High-density WLAN systems are managed by a management server, which gathers wireless environmental information from user equipment through cellular access. Hierarchical clustering of basic service sets is used to form synchronized clusters to reduce interference and increase throughput of high-density WLAN systems based on mobile cooperative control. This method increases uplink capacity by up to 19.4% and by up to 11.3% in total when WLAN access points are deployed close together. This control method is potentially effective for IEEE 802.11ax WLAN systems utilized as 5G mobile network components.

The impedance expansion method (IEM) is a circuit-modeling technique for electrically small devices based on the method of moments. In a previous study, a circuit model of a wireless power transfer (WPT) system was developed by utilizing the IEM and eigenmode analysis. However, this technique assumes that all the coupling elements (e.g., feeding loops and resonant coils) are in the absence of neighboring scatters (e.g., bodies of vehicles). This study extends the theory of the IEM to obtain the circuit model of a WPT system in the vicinity of a perfectly conducting scatterer (PCS). The numerical results show that the proposed method can be applied to the frequencies at which the dimension of the PCS is less than approximately a quarter wavelength. In addition, the yielded circuit model is found to be valid at the operating frequency band.

The network load is increasing due to the spread of content distribution services. Caching is recognized as a technique to reduce the peak network load by storing popular content into memories of users. Coded caching is a new caching approach based on a carefully designed content placement to create coded multicasting opportunities. Coded caching schemes in single-rate networks are evaluated by the tradeoff between the size of memory and that of delivered data. For considering the network with multiple transmission rates, it is crucial how to operate multicast. In multicast delivery, a sender must communicate to intended receivers at a rate that is available to all receivers. Multicast scheduling method of determining rates to deliver are evaluated by throughput and delay in multi-rate wireless networks. In this paper, we discuss coded caching in the multi-rate wireless networks. We newly define a measure for evaluating the coded caching scheme as coded caching delay and propose a new coded caching scheme. Also, we compare the proposed coded caching scheme with conventional coded caching schemes and show that the proposed scheme is suitable for multi-rate wireless networks.

In emergency communication systems research, aerial wireless relay networks (AWRNs) using multicopter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been proposed. The main issue of the AWRNs is how to minimize the delay time of packet transmissions since it is not easy to supply many multicopters to cover a wide area. In this paper, we review the flight schemes and their delay time for the AWRNs. Furthermore, the network has specific issues such as multicopters' drops due to their battery capacity depletion and inclination of moving multicopters. The inclination of multicopters affects the received power, and the communication range changes based on the inclination as well. Therefore, we clarify the effect of these issues on the delay time.

Autonomous mobility machines, such as self-driving cars, transportation robots, and automated construction machines, are promising to support or enrich human lives. To further improve such machines, they will be connected to the network via wireless links to be managed, monitored, or remotely operated. The autonomous mobility machines must have self-status based on their positioning system to safely conduct their operations without colliding with other objects. The self-status is not only essential for machine operation but also it is valuable for wireless link quality management. This paper presents self-status-based wireless link quality prediction and evaluates its performance by using a prototype mobility robot combined with a wireless LAN system. The developed robot has functions to measure the throughput and receive signal strength indication and obtain self-status details such as location, direction, and odometry data. Prediction performance is evaluated in offline processing by using the dataset gathered in an indoor experiment. The experiments clarified that, in the 5.6 GHz band, link quality prediction using self-status of the robot forecasted the throughput several seconds into the future, and the prediction accuracies were investigated as dependent on time window size of the target throughput, bandwidth, and frequency gap.

To tackle the distributed power optimization problems in wireless sensor networks localization systems, we model the problem as a hierarchical game, i.e. a multi-leader multi-follower Stackelberg game. Existing researches focus on the power allocation of anchor nodes for ranging signals or the power management of agent nodes for cooperative localization, individually. However, the power optimizations for different nodes are indiscerptible due to the common objective of localization accuracy. So it is a new challenging task when the power allocation strategies are considered for anchor and agent nodes simultaneously. To cope with this problem, a hierarchical game is proposed where anchor nodes are modeled as leaders and agent nodes are modeled as followers. Then, we prove that games of leaders and followers are both potential games, which guarantees the Nash equilibrium (NE) of each game. Moreover, the existence of Stackelberg equilibrium (SE) is proved and achieved by the best response dynamics. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can have better localization accuracy compared with the decomposed algorithm and uniform strategy.

This paper proposes and demonstrates a 65nm CMOS process cascode single-inductor-dual-output (SIDO) boost converter whose outputs are Li-ion battery and 1V low voltage supply for RF wireless power transfer (WPT) receiver. The 1V power supply is used for internal control circuits to reduce power consumption. In order to withstand 4.2V Li-ion battery output, cascode 2.5V I/O PFETs are used at the power stage. On the other hand, to generate 1V while maintaining 4.2V tolerance at 1V output, cascode 2.5V I/O NFETs output stage is proposed. Measurement results show conversion efficiency of 87% at PIN=7mW, ILOAD=1.6mA and VBAT=4.0V, and 89% at PIN=7.9mW, ILOAD=2.1mA and VBAT=3.4V.

In this paper, the artificial noise (AN)-aided multiple-input single-output (MISO) cognitive radio network with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is considered, in which the cognitive user adopts the power-splitting (PS) receiver architecture to simultaneously decode information and harvest energy. To support secure communication and facilitate energy harvesting, AN is transmitted with information signal at cognitive base station (CBS). The secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) maximization problem is formulated with the constraints of secrecy rate and harvested energy requirements as well as primary user's interference requirements. However, this challenging problem is non-convex due to the fractional objective function and the coupling between the optimization variables. For tackling the challenging problem, a double-layer iterative optimization algorithm is developed. Specifically, the outer layer invokes a one-dimension search algorithm for the newly introduced tight relaxation variable, while the inner one leverages the Dinkelbach method to make the fractional optimization problem more tractable. Furthermore, closed-form expressions for the power of information signal and AN are obtained. Numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed algorithm and the advantages of AN in enhancing the SEE performance.

Wireless full duplex (FD) communication can double the point-to-point throughput. To fully realize the benefits of the FD technique in wireless local area networks (WLANs), it is important to design the medium access control (MAC) protocols for FD communications. In FD MAC protocols, when a node wins the channel contention and transmits a primary transmission, its destination node can start a secondary transmission triggered by the primary transmission. Each secondary transmitter transmits a data frame even if its backoff timer is not zero. However, the backoff scheme in the FD MAC protocols follows the conventional scheme based on the distributed coordination function (DCF). Therefore, the nodes with FD MAC initialize the contention window (CW) size to minimum CW (CWmin) after their successful secondary transmissions. Therefore, CW initialization in the FD MAC causes further collisions at stations (STAs), which degrades network throughput. This paper proposes a novel backoff scheme for FD MAC protocols. In the proposed scheme, the CW size and backoff timer are not initialized but kept the current value after secondary transmissions. The proposed scheme can mitigate frame collisions at STAs and increase FD-transmission opportunity in the network, and then enhance the throughput significantly. This paper presents comprehensive performance evaluation in simulations, including non-saturation and saturation conditions, and co-existence conditions with legacy half duplex (HD) STAs. For performance analysis, this paper establishes Markov-chain models for the proposed scheme. The analytical results show theoretically that the operation of the proposed scheme enhances network throughput. The simulation results and analytical results show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

In this paper, we propose a filter-and-forward relay scheme with energy harvesting for single-carrier transmission in frequency-selective channels. The relay node harvests energy from both the source node transmit signal and its own transmit signal by self-energy recycling. The signal received by the relay node is filtered to suppress the inter-symbol interference and then forwarded to the destination node using the harvested energy. We consider a filter design method based on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise power ratio maximization, subject to a constraint that limits the relay transmit power. In addition, we provide a golden-section search based algorithm to optimize the power splitting ratio of the power splitting protocol. The simulation results show that filtering and self-energy recycling of the proposed scheme are effective in improving performance. It is also shown that the proposed scheme is useful even when only partial channel state information is available.
