In this paper, the issue of carrier frequency offset (CFO) compensation in interleaved orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) uplink system is investigated. To mitigate the effect of multiple access interference (MAI) caused by CFOs of different users, a new parallel interference cancellation (PIC) compensation algorithm is proposed. This scheme uses minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion to obtain the estimation of interference users, then circular convolutions are employed to restore MAI and compensate CFO. To tackle the complexity problem of circular convolutions, an efficient MAI restoration and cancellation method is developed. Simulations illustrate the good performance and low computational complexity of the proposed algorithm.

This paper proposes a frequency asynchronous cross-polarization interference canceller for Vertical/Horizontal (V/H) polarization multiplexing satellite communications. In satellite communications, V/H polarization signals are likely to experience different frequency fluctuations, and so the cross-polarization undergoes two different frequency fluctuations. To cancel this cross-polarization interference, a new frequency asynchronous cross-polarization interference canceller that removes interference and frequency offsets is proposed. Computer simulations are carried out to evaluate its fundamental performance. The results show that the proposed canceller can remove the cross-polarization interference created by the two different frequency offsets, simultaneously.

In a Decode and Forward (DF) type of an OFDM-based Full Duplex Relay (FDR), the frequency-domain approach is more efficient than the time-domain approach for feedback interference cancellation. However, Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) may occur due to timing mismatch between the feedback interference signal and the desired signal from the Base Station (BS). In this letter, the effects of a timing mismatch on synchronous types and asynchronous types of OFDM-based FDRs are investigated in uplink and downlink cases. A synchronization procedure and techniques for minimizing ISI and ICI in OFDM-based FDRs with a frequency-domain feedback interference canceller are proposed.

To explain the variation of the address discharge during an address period, the wall voltage variation during an address period was investigated as a function of the address-on-time by using the Vt closed curves. It was observed that the wall voltage between the scan and address electrodes was decreased with an increase in the address-on-time. It was also observed that the wall voltage variation during an address period strongly depended on the voltage difference between the scan and address electrodes. Based on this result, the modified driving waveform to raise the level of Vscanw, was proposed to minimize the voltage difference between the scan and address electrodes. However, the modified driving waveform resulted in the increase in the falling time of scan pulse. Finally, the overlapped double scan waveform was proposed to reduce a falling time of scan pulse under the raised voltage level of Vscanw, also.

This paper presents the analysis and design of a reflection-cancelling transverse slot-pair array antenna with baffles by using the Spectrum of Two-Dimensional Solutions (S2DS) method. For the transverse slot array, the slot spacings with more than one free-space wavelength cause the grating-lobes. The baffles suppress the grating-lobes effectively. A one-dimensional slot array is extracted from the 2D array with in-phase excitation by assuming periodicity in the transversal direction. The uniform excitation over the finite array is synthesized iteratively to demonstrate the fast and accurate results by S2DS. A unit design model with the baffles is introduced to determine the initial parameters of the slot-pairs, which greatly accelerate the iterations process. Experiments at 25.3 GHz demonstrate the suppression of the grating lobes to the level less than -20.0 dB and also the good uniformity of the aperture field distribution.

This letter proposes a windowing frequency domain adaptive algorithm, which reuses the filtering error to apply window function in the filter updating symmetrically. By using a proper window function to reduce the negative influence of the spectral leakage, the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the performance of the acoustic echo cancellation for speech signals.

Frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion can provide a better bit error rate (BER) performance than rake combining. However, the residual inter-chip interference (ICI) is produced after MMSE-FDE and this degrades the BER performance. Recently, we showed that frequency-domain ICI cancellation can bring the BER performance close to the theoretical lower bound. To further improve the BER performance, transmit antenna diversity technique is effective. Cyclic delay transmit diversity (CDTD) can increase the number of equivalent paths and hence achieve a large frequency diversity gain. Space-time transmit diversity (STTD) can obtain antenna diversity gain due to the space-time coding and achieve a better BER performance than CDTD. Objective of this paper is to show that the BER performance degradation of CDTD is mainly due to the residual ICI and that the introduction of ICI cancellation gives almost the same BER performance as STTD. This study provides a very important result that CDTD has a great advantage of providing a higher throughput than STTD. This is confirmed by computer simulation. The computer simulation results show that CDTD can achieve higher throughput than STTD when ICI cancellation is introduced.

A 0.13-µm CMOS 2.4-GHz low-noise balun-mixer is proposed, where a noise-canceling transconductance stage is adopted for low-noise characteristics. A current-bleeding circuit with an LC resonator is also adopted to further improve the noise figure of the proposed balun-mixer, without additional DC power consumption. The measured results show a DSB NF of 5.5 dB over output IF frequency ranges of 10 to 100 MHz, a conversion gain of 19 dB, and an input P1 dB of -16 dBm. The proposed balun-mixer is implemented in 0.13-µm CMOS technology and consumes only 4.5 mA from a 1.5-V supply voltage.

In this paper, we present a revision of using eigenvalues of covariance matrices proposed by Tsai et al. as a measure of significance (i.e., curvature) for boundary-based corner detection. We first show the pitfall of Tsai et al.'s approach. We then further investigate the properties of eigenvalues of covariance matrices of three different types of curves and point out a mistake made by Tsai et al.'s method. Finally, we propose a modification of using eigenvalues as a measure of significance for corner detection to remedy their defect. The experiment results show that under the same conditions of the test patterns, in addition to correctly detecting all true corners, the spurious corners detected by Tsai et al.'s method disappear in our modified measure of significance.

In this Letter, a robust system identification method is proposed for the generalized sidelobe canceller using dual microphones. The conventional transfer-function generalized sidelobe canceller employs the non-stationarity characteristics of the speech signal to estimate the relative transfer function and thus is difficult to apply when the noise is also non-stationary. Under the assumption of W-disjoint orthogonality between the speech and the non-stationary noise, the proposed algorithm finds the speech-dominant time-frequency bins of the input signal by inspecting the system output and the inter-microphone time delay. Only these bins are used to estimate the relative transfer function, so reliable estimates can be obtained under non-stationary noise conditions. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm significantly improves the performance of the transfer-function generalized sidelobe canceller, while only sustaining a modest estimation error in adverse non-stationary noise environments.

A novel video retrieval method based on Web community extraction using audio and visual features and textual features of video materials is proposed in this paper. In this proposed method, canonical correlation analysis is applied to these three features calculated from video materials and their Web pages, and transformation of each feature into the same variate space is possible. The transformed variates are based on the relationships between visual, audio and textual features of video materials, and the similarity between video materials in the same feature space for each feature can be calculated. Next, the proposed method introduces the obtained similarities of video materials into the link relationship between their Web pages. Furthermore, by performing link analysis of the obtained weighted link relationship, this approach extracts Web communities including similar topics and provides the degree of attribution of video materials in each Web community for each feature. Therefore, by calculating similarities of the degrees of attribution between the Web communities extracted from the three kinds of features, the desired ones are automatically selected. Consequently, by monitoring the degrees of attribution of the obtained Web communities, the proposed method can perform effective video retrieval. Some experimental results obtained by applying the proposed method to video materials obtained from actual Web pages are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A simple and novel residual acoustic echo cancellation method that employs binary masking is proposed to enhance the speech quality of hands-free communication in an automobile environment. In general, the W-disjoint orthogonality assumption is used for blind source separation using multi-microphones. However, in this Letter, it is utilized to mask the residual echo component in the time-frequency domain using a single microphone. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in terms of the echo return loss enhancement and speech enhancement.

    1950-1960

In this paper, a method for adaptive reconstruction of missing textures based on kernel canonical correlation analysis (CCA) with a new clustering scheme is presented. The proposed method estimates the correlation between two areas, which respectively correspond to a missing area and its neighboring area, from known parts within the target image and realizes reconstruction of the missing texture. In order to obtain this correlation, the kernel CCA is applied to each cluster containing the same kind of textures, and the optimal result is selected for the target missing area. Specifically, a new approach monitoring errors caused in the above kernel CCA-based reconstruction process enables selection of the optimal result. This approach provides a solution to the problem in traditional methods of not being able to perform adaptive reconstruction of the target textures due to missing intensities. Consequently, all of the missing textures are successfully estimated by the optimal cluster's correlation, which provides accurate reconstruction of the same kinds of textures. In addition, the proposed method can obtain the correlation more accurately than our previous works, and more successful reconstruction performance can be expected. Experimental results show impressive improvement of the proposed reconstruction technique over previously reported reconstruction techniques.

Time-Triggered Controller Area Network is widely accepted as a viable solution for real-time communication systems such as in-vehicle communications. However, although TTCAN has been designed to support both periodic and sporadic real-time messages, previous studies mostly focused on providing deterministic real-time guarantees for periodic messages while barely addressing the performance issue of sporadic messages. In this paper, we present an O(n2) scheduling algorithm that can minimize the maximum duration of exclusive windows occupied by periodic messages, thereby minimizing the worst-case scheduling delays experienced by sporadic messages.

To attain good performance in an acoustic echo cancellation system, it is important to have a variable step size (VSS) algorithm as part of an adaptive filter. In this paper, we are concerned with the development of a VSS algorithm for a recently proposed subband affine projection (SAP) adaptive filter. Two popular VSS algorithms in the literature are the methods of delayed coefficients (DC) and variable regularization (VR). However, the merits and demerits of them are mutually exclusive. We propose a VSS algorithm that is a hybrid of both methods and combines their advantages. An extensive study of the new algorithm in different scenarios like the presence double-talk (DT) during the transient phase of the adaptive filter, DT during steady state, and varying DT power is conducted and reasoning is given to support the observed behavior. The importance of the method of VR as part of a VSS algorithm is emphasized.

A critical problem after a natural/manmade disaster is to provide immediate post-disaster communication links between the disaster victims and some overlay networks. This paper proposes a novel scheme that uses the surviving Mobile handSets (MS) as sensing nodes to form an auto-configured Hierarchical Cognitive Radio Network (H-CRN). The implementation of this H-CRN is explained through detailed problem scenario statement and step-by-step implementation of automatic identification of emergency situation by the MS nodes. An overview of the cross-layer framework used by the MS nodes is also presented. This novel scheme is tested through some hypothesis along with probability calculations for successful identification of emergency situation, formation of ad hoc group and Emergency Beacon Message (EBM) transmission.
