With the gradually increase of the application of new energy in microgrids, Electric Spring (ES), as a new type of distributed compensation power electronic device has been widely studied. The Generalized Electric Spring (G-ES) is an improved topology, and the space limitation problem in the traditional topology is solved. Because of the mode of G-ES use in the power grid, a reasonable solution to the voltage loss of the critical section feeder is needed. In this paper, the voltage balance equation based on the feedforward compensation coefficient is established, and a two cascade control strategy based on the equation is studied. The first stage of the two cascade control strategy is to use communication means to realize the allocation of feedforward compensation coefficients, and the second stage is to use the coefficients to realize feedforward fixed angle control. Simulation analysis shows that the proposed control strategy does not affect the control accuracy of the critical load (CL), and effectively improves the operational range of the G-ES.

This paper presents a compact fully-differential distributed amplifier using a coupled inductor. Differential distributed amplifiers are widely required in optical communication systems. Most of the distributed amplifiers reported in the past are single-ended or pseudo-differential topologies. In addition, the differential distributed amplifiers require many inductors, which increases the silicon cost. In this study, we use differentially coupled inductors to reduce the chip area to less than half and eliminate the difficulties in layout design. The challenge in using coupled inductors is the capacitive parasitic coupling that degrades the flatness of frequency response. To address this challenge, the odd-mode image parameters of a differential artificial transmission line are derived using a simple loss-less model. Based on the analytical results, we optimize the dimensions of the inductor with the gradient descent algorithm to achieve accurate impedance matching and phase matching. The amplifier was fabricated in 0.18-µm CMOS technology. The core area of the amplifier is 0.27 mm2, which is 57% smaller than the previous work. Besides, we demonstrated a small group delay variation of ±2.7 ps thanks to the optimization. the amplifier successfully performed 30-Gbps NRZ and PAM4 transmissions with superior jitter performance. The proposed technique will promote the high-density integration of differential traveling wave devices.

Precision microwave measurement systems require highly stable oscillators with both excellent long-term and short-term stability. Compared to components used in laboratory instruments, dielectric resonator oscillators (DRO) offer low phase noise with greatly reduced mechanical complexity. To further enhance performance, phase-locked loop (PLL) stabilization can be used to eliminate drift and provide precise frequency control. In this work, the design of a low-cost DRO concept is presented and its performance is evaluated through simulations and measurements. An open-loop phase noise of -107.2 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset frequency and 12.8 GHz output frequency is demonstrated. Drift and phase noise are reduced by a PLL, so that a very low jitter of under 29.6 fs is achieved over the entire operating bandwidth.

In this paper, a hybrid electromagnetic simulation method of two-dimensional FDTD and ray-tracing methods suitable for an airport surface was proposed. The power variation due to ground reflection, refraction and creeping is calculated by two-dimensional FDTD method and ray-tracing method is used to calculate the reflecting and diffracted powers from buildings. The proposed approach was validated by measurement using a 1/50 scale-model of an airport model with a building model in various positions at 5 GHz. The proposed method allowed measured power distributions to correlate with simulated figures to within 4.8 dB and their null positions were also estimated to an error tolerance of within 0.01 m.

The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm is gaining interest for its potential use in near-term quantum devices. In the VQE algorithm, parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) are employed to prepare quantum states, which are then utilized to compute the expectation value of a given Hamiltonian. Designing efficient PQCs is crucial for improving convergence speed. In this study, we introduce problem-specific PQCs tailored for optimization problems by dynamically generating PQCs that incorporate problem constraints. This approach reduces a search space by focusing on unitary transformations that benefit the VQE algorithm, and accelerate convergence. Our experimental results demonstrate that the convergence speed of our proposed PQCs outperforms state-of-the-art PQCs, highlighting the potential of problem-specific PQCs in optimization problems.

FPGA clusters that consist of multiple FPGA boards have been gaining interest in recent times. Massively parallel processing with a stand-alone heterogeneous FPGA cluster with SoC- style FPGAs and mid-scale FPGAs is promising with cost-performance benefit. Here, we propose such a heterogeneous FPGA cluster with FiC and M-KUBOS cluster. FiC consists of multiple boards, mounting middle scale Xilinx's FPGAs and DRAMs, which are tightly coupled with high-speed serial links. In addition, M-KUBOS boards are connected to FiC for ensuring high IO data transfer bandwidth. As an example of massively parallel processing, here we implement genomic pattern search. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has revolutionized biological system related research by its high-speed, scalable and massive throughput. To analyze the genomic data, short read mapping technique is used where short Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences are mapped relative to a known reference sequence. Although several pattern matching techniques are available, FM-index based pattern search is perfectly suitable for this task due to the fastest mapping from known indices. Since matching can be done in parallel for different data, the massively parallel computing which distributes data, executes in parallel and gathers the results can be applied. We also implement a data compression method where about 10 times reduction in data size is achieved. We found that a M-KUBOS board matches four FiC boards, and a system with six M-KUBOS boards and 24 FiC boards achieved 30 times faster than the software based implementation.

Until today, digital image watermarking has not been large-scale used in the industry. The first reason is that the watermarking efficiency is low and the real-time performance cannot be satisfied. The second reason is that the watermarking scheme cannot cope with various attacks. To solve above problems, this paper presents a multi-domain based digital image watermarking scheme, where a fast DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) based watermarking method is proposed for synchronization correction and an IWT-DCT (Integer Wavelet Transform-Discrete Cosine Transform) based watermarking method is proposed for information embedding. The proposed scheme has high efficiency during embedding and extraction. Compared with five existing schemes, the robustness of our scheme is very strong and our scheme can cope with many common attacks and compound attacks, and thus can be used in wide application scenarios.

In the current heterogeneous wireless communication system, the sharp rise in energy consumption and the emergence of new service types pose great challenges to nowadays radio access network selection algorithms which do not take care of these new trends. So the proposed energy efficiency based multi-service heterogeneous access network selection algorithm-ESRS (Energy Saving Radio access network Selection) is intended to reduce the energy consumption caused by the traffic in the mobile network system composed of Base Stations (BSs) and Access Points (APs). This algorithm models the access network selection problem as a Multiple-Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) problem. To solve this problem, lots of methods are combined, including analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), weighted grey relational analysis (GRA), entropy theory, simple additive weight (SAW), and utility function theory. There are two main steps in this algorithm. At first, the proposed algorithm gets the result of the user QoS of each network by dealing with the related QoS parameters, in which entropy theory and AHP are used to determine the QoS comprehensive weight, and the SAW is used to get each network's QoS. In addition to user QoS, parameters including user throughput, energy consumption utility and cost utility are also calculated in this step. In the second step, the fuzzy theory is used to define the weight of decision attributes, and weighted grey relational analysis (GRA) is used to calculate the network score, which determines the final choice. Because the fuzzy weight has a preference for the low energy consumption, the energy consumption of the traffic will be saved by choosing the network with the least energy consumption as much as possible. The simulation parts compared the performance of ESRS, ABE and MSNS algorithms. The numerical results show that ESRS algorithm can select the appropriate network based on the service demands and network parameters. Besides, it can effectively reduce the system energy consumption and overall cost while still maintaining a high overall QoS value and a high system throughput, when compared with the other two algorithms.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid crystal oscillator which achieves both quick startup and low steady-state power consumption. At startup, a large negative resistance is realized by configuring a Pierce oscillating circuit with a multi-stage inverter amplifier, resulting in high-speed startup. During steady-state oscillation, the oscillator is reconfigured as a class-C complementary Colpitts circuit for low power consumption and low phase noise. Prototype chips were fabricated in 65nm CMOS process technology. With Pierce-type configuration, the measured startup time and startup energy of the oscillator are reduced to 1/11 and 1/5, respectively, compared with the one without Pierce-type configuration. The power consumption during steady oscillation is 30 µW.

This paper presents a divide-by-9 injection-locked frequency divider (ILFD). It can lock onto about 6-GHz input with a locking range of 3.23GHz (58%). The basic concept of the ILFD is based on employing self-gated multiple inputs into the multiple-stage ring oscillator. A wide lock range is also realized by adapting harmonic-control circuits, which can boost specific harmonics generated by mixing. The ILFD was fabricated using a 55-nm deeply depleted channel (DDC) CMOS process. It occupies an area of 0.0210mm2, and consumes a power of 14.4mW.

Energy harvesting has been widely investigated as a potential solution to supply power for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Computing devices must operate intermittently rather than continuously, because harvested energy is unstable and some of IoT applications can be periodic. Therefore, processors for IoT devices with intermittent operation must feature a hibernation mode with zero-standby-power in addition to energy-efficient normal mode. In this paper, we describe the layout design and measurement results of a nonvolatile standard cell memory (NV-SCM) and nonvolatile flip-flops (NV-FF) with a nonvolatile memory using Fishbone-in-Cage Capacitor (FiCC) suitable for IoT processors with intermittent operations. They can be fabricated in any conventional CMOS process without any additional mask. NV-SCM and NV-FF are fabricated in a 180nm CMOS process technology. The area overhead by nonvolatility of a bit cell are 74% in NV-SCM and 29% in NV-FF, respectively. We confirmed full functionality of the NV-SCM and NV-FF. The nonvolatile system using proposed NV-SCM and NV-FF can reduce the energy consumption by 24.3% compared to the volatile system when hibernation/normal operation time ratio is 500 as shown in the simulation.

This paper presents on-chip characterization of electrostatic discharge (ESD) impacts applied on the Si-substrate backside of a flip-chip mounted integrated circuit (FC-IC) chip. An FC-IC chip has an open backside and there is a threat of reliability problems and malfunctions caused by the backside ESD. We prepared a test FC-IC chip and measured Si-substrate voltage fluctuations on its frontside by an on-chip monitor (OCM) circuit. The voltage surges as large as 200mV were observed on the frontside when a 200-V ESD gun was irradiated through a 5kΩ contact resistor on the backside of a 350μm thick Si substrate. The distribution of voltage heights was experimentally measured at 20 on-chip locations among thinned Si substrates up to 40μm, and also explained in full-system level simulation of backside ESD impacts with the equivalent models of ESD-gun operation and FC-IC chip assembly.

The complexity and scale of Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are growing as more processing elements and memory devices are implemented on chips. However, under strict power budgets, it is also critical to lower the power consumption of NoCs for the sake of energy efficiency. In this paper, we therefore present three novel input unit designs for on-chip routers attempting to shrink their power consumption while still conserving the network performance. The key idea behind our designs is to organize buffers in the input units with characteristics of the network traffic in mind; as in our observations, only a small portion of the network traffic are long packets (composed of multiple flits), which means, it is fair to implement hybrid, asymmetric and reconfigurable buffers so that they are mainly targeting at short packets (only having a single flit), hence the smaller power consumption and area overhead. Evaluations show that our hybrid, asymmetric and reconfigurable input unit designs can achieve an average reduction of energy consumption per flit by 45%, 52.3% and 56.2% under 93.6% (for hybrid designs) and 66.3% (for asymmetric and reconfigurable designs) of the original router area, respectively. Meanwhile, we only observe minor degradation in network latency (ranging from 18.4% to 1.5%, on average) with our proposals.

The transfer distance of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system with relay coil is longer, so this technology have a better practical perspective. But the location of the relay coil has a great impact on the transmission efficiency of the WPT system, and it is not easy to analyze. In order to research the influence law of the relay coil location on the transmission efficiency and obtain the optimal location, the paper firstly proposes the concept of relay coil location factor. And based on the location factor, a novel method for studying the influence of the relay coil location on the transmission efficiency is proposed. First, the mathematical model between the transmission efficiency and the location factor is built. Next, considering the transfer distance, coil radius, coil turns and load resistance, a lot of simulations are carried out to analyze the influence of the location factor on the transmission efficiency, respectively. The influence law and the optimal location factor were obtained with different parameters. Finally, a WPT system with relay coil was built for experiments. And the experiment results verify that the theoretical analysis is correct and the proposed method can simplify the analysis progress of the influence of relay coil location on the transmission efficiency. Moreover, the proposed method and the research conclusions can provide guidance for designing the multiple coils structure WPT system.

Due to the global outbreak of coronaviruses, people are increasingly wearing masks even when photographed. As a result, photos uploaded to web pages and social networking services with the lower half of the face hidden are less likely to convey the attractiveness of the photographed persons. In this study, we propose a method to complete facial mask regions using StyleGAN2, a type of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). In the proposed method, a reference image of the same person without a mask is prepared separately from a target image of the person wearing a mask. After the mask region in the target image is temporarily inpainted, the face orientation and contour of the person in the reference image are changed to match those of the target image using StyleGAN2. The changed image is then composited into the mask region while correcting the color tone to produce a mask-free image while preserving the person's features.

Social relationships (e.g., couples, opponents) are the foundational part of society. Social relation atmosphere describes the overall interaction environment between social relationships. Discovering social relation atmosphere can help machines better comprehend human behaviors and improve the performance of social intelligent applications. Most existing research mainly focuses on investigating social relationships, while ignoring the social relation atmosphere. Due to the complexity of the expressions in video data and the uncertainty of the social relation atmosphere, it is even difficult to define and evaluate. In this paper, we innovatively analyze the social relation atmosphere in video data. We introduce a Relevant Visual Concept (RVC) from the social relationship recognition task to facilitate social relation atmosphere recognition, because social relationships contain useful information about human interactions and surrounding environments, which are crucial clues for social relation atmosphere recognition. Our approach consists of two main steps: (1) we first generate a group of visual concepts that preserve the inherent social relationship information by utilizing a 3D explanation module; (2) the extracted relevant visual concepts are used to supplement the social relation atmosphere recognition. In addition, we present a new dataset based on the existing Video Social Relation Dataset. Each video is annotated with four kinds of social relation atmosphere attributes and one social relationship. We evaluate the proposed method on our dataset. Experiments with various 3D ConvNets and fusion methods demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively improve recognition accuracy compared to end-to-end ConvNets. The visualization results also indicate that essential information in social relationships can be discovered and used to enhance social relation atmosphere recognition.

Various haze removal methods based on the atmospheric scattering model have been presented in recent years. Most methods have targeted strong haze images where light is scattered equally in all color channels. This paper presents a haze removal method using near-infrared (NIR) images for relatively weak haze images. In order to recover the lost edges, the presented method first extracts edges from an appropriately weighted NIR image and fuses it with the color image. By introducing a wavelength-dependent scattering model, our method then estimates the transmission map for each color channel and recovers the color more naturally from the edge-recovered image. Finally, the edge-recovered and the color-recovered images are blended. In this blending process, the regions with high lightness, such as sky and clouds, where unnatural color shifts are likely to occur, are effectively estimated, and the optimal weighting map is obtained. Our qualitative and quantitative evaluations using 59 pairs of color and NIR images demonstrated that our method can recover edges and colors more naturally in weak haze images than conventional methods.

A fault-tolerant aggregate signature (FT-AS) scheme is a variant of an aggregate signature scheme with the additional functionality to trace signers that create invalid signatures in case an aggregate signature is invalid. Several FT-AS schemes have been proposed so far, and some of them trace such rogue signers in multi-rounds, i.e., the setting where the signers repeatedly send their individual signatures. However, it has been overlooked that there exists a potential attack on the efficiency of bandwidth consumption in a multi-round FT-AS scheme. Since one of the merits of aggregate signature schemes is the efficiency of bandwidth consumption, such an attack might be critical for multi-round FT-AS schemes. In this paper, we propose a new multi-round FT-AS scheme that is tolerant of such an attack. We implement our scheme and experimentally show that it is more efficient than the existing multi-round FT-AS scheme if rogue signers randomly create invalid signatures with low probability, which for example captures spontaneous failures of devices in IoT systems.

This paper develops a design method and theoretical analysis for piecewise nonlinear oscillators that have desired circular limit cycles. Especially, the mathematical proof on existence, uniqueness, and stability of the limit cycle is shown for the piecewise nonlinear oscillator. In addition, the relationship between parameters in the oscillator and rotational directions and periods of the limit cycle trajectories is investigated. Then, some numerical simulations show that the piecewise nonlinear oscillator has a unique and stable limit cycle and the properties on rotational directions and periods hold.
