  • Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation for QoS in IEEE 802.16 Broadband Wireless Networks

    IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access (BWA) technology is suitable for providing multimedia applications without accessing the wired networks directly. Although IEEE 802.16 standard well defines the quality of service (QoS) framework, it makes no specific recommendation with regard to the bandwidth allocation. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for allocating bandwidth in response to dynamic changes in the arrival rate such that the total bandwidth is efficiently utilized.

  • Motion of Break Arcs Driven by External Magnetic Field in a DC42 V Resistive Circuit

    Motion of break arcs driven by external magnetic field is observed using a high-speed camera. The magnetic field is applied with a permanent magnet. Experimental circuit is DC42 V-10 A resistive circuit. Material of electrical contacts is silver. Following results are shown. The break arcs are driven in the direction according to Lorentz force. The arc duration decreases with decrease of the distance between the electrical contacts and the magnet. When the external magnetic-flux density at the position of the break arc is lower than a certain value, the effect of the magnetic field to drive the break arc becomes ineffective to shorten the arc duration. The result is explained with a relationship between the motion of break arc and the distribution of the external magnetic field.

    At high signal frequencies (i.e. in the GHz range), a connector must be considered as part of an electromagnetic transmission line. At these frequencies, the impedance characteristics of the connector stemming from the distributed inductance and capacitance of pins and the associated wiring, must be carefully controlled; insertion losses must be minimized and undesirable coupling between non-neighboring pins giving rise to crosstalk must be avoided to achieve optimal signal transmission. This paper reviews fundamental issues associated with the performance optimization of multi-conductor connector structures for high speed signal transmission. The paper complements an earlier publication that reviewed the major factors affecting electrical contact resistance at high frequencies [1].

    An optimized Built-In Self-Test technology is proposed in this paper. A simplified algebraic model is developed to represent the configurations of single input change circuits. A novel single input change sequence generation technique is designed. It consists of a modified scan shift register, a seed storage array and a series of XOR gates. This circuitry can automatically generate single input change sequences of more unique vectors. Experimental results based on the ISCAS-89 benchmark show that the proposed method can achieve high stuck-at fault coverage with low switching activity during test applications.

  • Analysis of the Energy-QoS Tradeoff for Contention-Based Wireless Sensor Networks with Synchronous Wakeup Patterns

    To conserve energy, periodic active/sleep dynamics is adopted in wireless sensor networks. At the same time, the QoS guarantees, such as packet delay, packet loss ratio and network throughput need to be satisfied. We develop a finite queuing model for sensor nodes and derive network performance for contention-based wireless sensor networks with synchronous wakeup patterns. Furthermore, the impact of active/sleep duty cycle, time scale and node buffer size on the tradeoff between energy efficiency and QoS guarantees is studied based on the model. Simulation results well match our analytical results and validate the accuracy of our model and approach.

  • The Cross-Entropy Method for Maximum Likelihood Location Estimation Based on IEEE 802.15.4 Radio Signals in Sensor Networks

    This paper considers the problem of target location estimation in a wireless sensor network based on IEEE 802.15.4 radio signals and proposes a novel implementation of the maximum likelihood (ML) location estimator based on the Cross-Entropy (CE) method. In the proposed CE method, the ML criterion is translated into a stochastic approximation problem which can be solved effectively. Simulations that compare the performance of a ML target estimation scheme employing the conventional Newton method and the conjugate gradient method are presented. The simulation results show that the proposed CE method provides higher location estimation accuracy throughout the sensor field.

  • Relationship between Arc Duration and Motion of Arc Spots for Break Arcs of Ag and Ag/ZnO Electrical Contacts

    Break arcs are generated in a DC 42 V-10 A resistive circuit. The contact material is Ag or Ag/ZnO. The number of break operations is two hundreds for each contact material. The motion of break arcs is observed with a high-speed camera. Relationship between the dependence of arc duration on the number of operations and the motion of arc spots is investigated. The following results are shown. For Ag contacts the arc duration is almost constant independent to the number of break operations. For Ag/ZnO contacts, on the other hand, the arc duration changes irregularly to short (59 ms) or long (69 ms) arc-duration after 30th break operation. The moving range of arc spots on contact surfaces is broad for the case of short arc-duration and is narrow for the case of long arc-duration. The cause of the results for Ag/ZnO contacts is considered that the difference of the boiling points of Ag and ZnO leads to the porous structure on the contact surface.

    In the optimum design of AC contactors, it is important to analyze the dynamic behavior. Moreover, movable contact and core bounces have remarkable effect on the lifetime of contactors. According to a new kind of contactor with feedback controlled magnet system, this paper builds two different sets of periodically inter-transferred equations to obtain the dynamic characteristics of the contactor. The equations describe the coupling of the electric circuit, electromagnetic field and mechanical system taking account of the influence of friction. Then, the paper gives an optimum design to the dimension and the duty ratio of the contactor' pulse modulated wave (PWM) under different exciting, and proves, by experiment and simulation, that the bounce time of the contactor working in the optimized duty ratio is much less than that of the general AC contactors.

  • CQI Feedback Overhead Reduction for Multicarrier MIMO Transmission

    For wideband MIMO-OFDM systems, scheduling and link adaptation are key techniques to improve the throughput performance. However, in systems without reciprocity between the uplink and the downlink channels, these techniques require a high feedback overhead of the channel quality indication (CQI) information. In this paper, we propose a novel CQI feedback reduction method, which is based on the conventional compression techniques exploiting the discrete cosine transformation (DCT). The basic idea is to adaptively permute the CQI sequences of different MIMO streams according to one of the possible patterns before the DCT compression so that the amount of feedback bits is minimized. The possible patterns used are carefully designed according to our analysis of the two types of correlations (the inter-stream correlation and the inter-subband correlation) that exist in MIMO-OFDM transmission, as well as their impact on the compression efficiency. Simulation results verify that the proposed method can effectively reduce the CQI feedback overhead under varying channel conditions.

  • A New Dimension Analysis on Blocking Behavior in Banyan-Based Optical Switching Networks

    Vertically stacked optical banyan (VSOB) is an attractive architecture for constructing banyan-based optical switches. Blocking behaviors analysis is an effective approach to studying network performance and finding a graceful compromise among hardware costs, blocking probability and crosstalk tolerance; however, little has been done on analyzing the blocking behavior of VSOB networks under crosstalk constraint which adds a new dimension to the switching performance. In this paper, we study the overall blocking behavior of a VSOB network under various degree of crosstalk, where an upper bound on the blocking probability of the network is developed. The upper bound depicts accurately the overall blocking behavior of a VSOB network as verified by extensive simulation results and it agrees with the strictly nonblocking condition of the network. The derived upper bound is significant because it reveals the inherent relationship between blocking probability and network hardware cost, by which a desirable tradeoff can be made between them under various degree of crosstalk constraint. Also, the upper bound shows how crosstalk adds a new dimension to the theory of switching systems.

    Simulations are often deployed to evaluate proposed mechanisms or algorithms in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET). In MANET, the impacts of some simulation parameters are noticeable, such as transmission range, data rate etc. However, the effect of mobility model is not clear until recently. Random Waypoint (RWP) is one of the most applied nodal mobility models in many simulations due to its clear procedures and easy employments. However, it exhibits the two major problems: decaying average speed and border effect. Both problems will overestimate the performance of the employed protocols and applications. Although many recently proposed mobility models are able to reduce or eliminate the above-mentioned problems, the concept of Diverse Average Speed (DAS) has not been introduced. DAS aims to provide different average speeds within the same speed range. In most mobility models, the average speed is decided when the minimum and maximum speeds are set. In this paper, we propose a novel mobility model, named General Ripple Mobility Model (GRMM). GRMM targets to provide a uniform nodal spatial distribution and DAS without decaying average speed. The simulations and analytic results have demonstrated the merits of the outstanding properties of the GRMM model.

  • On Throughput Improvement of Wireless Ad Hoc Networks with Hidden Nodes

    In this letter, we present the throughput analysis of the wireless ad hoc networks based on the IEEE 802.11 MAC (Medium Access Control). Especially, our analysis includes the case with the hidden node problem so that it can be applied to the multi-hop networks. In addition, we suggest a new channel access control algorithm to maximize the network throughput and show the usefulness of the proposed algorithm through simulations.

    In this paper, we propose a low-complexity frequency offset insensitive detection method for the 2.45 GHz LR-WPAN demodulator. In IEEE 802.15.4 LR-WPAN (Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Network) specification, the frequency offset as highest 80 ppm in the 2.45 GHz band is recommended for low-complexity, low-cost, and low-power implementation. The proposed detection method is verified such that the performance is within 2 dB of the optimal coherent detection with low complexity, which is less than half in comparison with conventional detection methods.

    Augmented reality tasks require a high-reliability tracking method. Large tracking error causes many problems during AR applications. Tracking error estimation should be integrated with them to improve the reliability of tracking methods. Although some tracking error estimation methods have been developed, they are not feasible to be integrated because of computational speed and accuracy. For this study, a tracking error estimation algorithm with screen error estimation based on the characteristic of linecode marker was applied. It can rapidly estimate tracking error. An evaluation experiment was conducted to compare the estimated tracking error and the actual measured tracking error. Results show that the algorithm is reliable and sufficiently fast to be used for real-time tracking error warning or tracking accuracy improvement methods.

    This paper studies packet scheduling schemes with QoE (user-level QoS) guarantee for audio-video transmission in a wireless LAN with HCF controlled channel access (HCCA) of the IEEE 802.11e MAC protocol. We first propose the static scheduling (SS) scheme, which grants adjustable transmission opportunity (TXOP) duration for constant bit rate (CBR) traffic. The SS scheme can determine the minimum TXOP duration capable of guaranteeing high QoE; it can maximize the number of admitted flows. As the burstiness of variable bit rate (VBR) traffic cannot be absorbed by the SS scheme, we also propose the multimedia priority dynamic scheduling (MPDS) scheme, which can absorb the burstiness through allocating additional TXOP duration. We then compare the SS scheme, the MPDS scheme, and the reference scheduler (TGe scheme) in terms of application-level QoS and user-level QoS (QoE). Numerical results show that in the SS scheme, the QoE can be kept relatively higher even when the TXOP duration is reduced in the case of video with the I picture pattern; this implies that more flows can be admitted. In the case of video with the IPPPPP picture pattern, which has the VBR characteristic more remarkably, reducing the TXOP duration according to the SS scheme will deteriorate the QoS level. In this case, the MPDS scheme performs better when the number of multimedia stations is small. However, the performance of the MPDS scheme deteriorates with the increase of the number of multimedia stations, though the results are comparable to or even better than those of the SS and TGe schemes.

  • An Efficient Scheduling Scheme for Assigning Transmission Opportunity in QoS-Guaranteed Wireless LAN

    The IEEE 802.11e standard defines several important techniques that guarantee the quality of service (QoS) of multimedia communications in wireless LAN applications. A key technique introduced in the standard is an efficient media access control based on the Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF), which assigns an appropriate transmission opportunity (TXOP) to each flow for satisfying several requirements on the flow, such as delay bound and communication bandwidth. Although the simple scheduler designed in HCF could provide an efficient tool to guarantee the QoS in wireless LAN applications, it has a serious drawback, wherein a useless bandwidth assignment frequently occurs. Such assignments occur primarily due to a limitation of the scheme, wherein all the flows share the same service interval (SI). In this paper, we propose a new scheduling scheme that associates each flow with its own SI according to the hardness of the required SI. The effect of this approach is experimentally evaluated by simulation, the results of which indicate that the number of admitted flows and network resource utilization increase due to the proposed scheme.

    In 2004, Choi et al. proposed an ID-based authenticated group key agreement. Unfortunately, their protocol was found to be vulnerable to the insider attacks by Zhang, Chen and Shim. To prevent insider attacks, Shim presented a modification of Choi et al.'s protocol. In this letter, we first show that Shim's modification is still insecure against insider attacks. We then present a modification of Choi et al.'s protocol that resists insider attacks. The counter-measure uses an ID-based signature on transcripts in order to bind them in a session. This prevents any replay of transcripts. Especially, by applying ID-based batch verification, the proposed one still consists of two rounds and is computationally efficient.

    Prior studies on limited feedback (LFB) beamforming in multiple-antenna orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) have resorted to Monte-Carlo simulations to evaluate the system performance. This letter proposes a novel analytical framework, based on which the averaged signal-to-noise ratio and the ergodic capacity performance of clustering-based LFB beamforming in multiple-antenna OFDM systems are studied. Simulations are also provided to verify the analysis.

    Recently, wireless LAN is achieving remarkable growth and maturity. On the other hand, by the advance of the Internet, the demand for multimedia communication services which include video and voice will be expected to grow. Therefore, in the future, the mechanism of QoS guarantee must be realized even in wireless LAN environment. So far, IEEE 802.11e EDCF has been proposed, which is a contention based channel access method to achieve the QoS guarantee in wireless LAN. However, this cannot realize the desired throughput ratio or deterministic target throughput in principle. In this paper, we expand the EDCF to solve such QoS issues and enable more flexible QoS control. Moreover, we show the effectiveness of our proposal by computer simulation.

  • Improvement of Beam Scanning Characteristics of a Dielectric Lens Antenna by Array Feeds

    In the Intelligent Transportation System, millimeter waves are used and antennas are required beam scanning ability. In the millimeter wave operation, a lens antenna is one of the prominent candidates which achieves wide angle beam scanning. Wide angle scanning can be achieved by introducing Abbe sine condition to lens surface shaping. Authors designed the shaped lens antenna that could achieve beam scanning 30. The narrow beam widths were maintained on the scanning plane. However, the beam widths were broadened on the transverse plane and large gain reduction was appeared. It was clarified that the reason of this beam deterioration was due to the phase delay on the antenna aperture. In this paper, an array feed composed of a group of rectangular horns is employed to compensate the phase delay on the antenna aperture. In designing the array feed, because there were no examples of phase radiation pattern synthesis, a new radiation pattern synthesis method is studied. Ability of the weighting matrix contained in the Least Mean Square synthesis method is paid attention. Adequate weighting matrix is found out. Satisfactory phase radiation pattern that can compensate the phase delay and an adequate amplitude radiation pattern are achieved. As a result, the improvement of scanned beam widths and antenna gains through the array feed are ensured. And adequate horn arrangements of the array feed for improving scanned beam are clarified. Moreover, in order to examine the realization of an actual array feed, the exact electromagnetic simulation is conducted. The validity of the radiation pattern synthesis is clarified.
