  • Compressed Sensing for Range-Resolved Signal of Ballistic Target with Low Computational Complexity

    The classification of warheads and decoys is a core technology in the defense of the ballistic missile. Usually, a high range resolution is favorable for the development of the classification algorithm, which requires a high sampling rate in fast time, and thus leads to a heavy computation burden for data processing. In this paper, a novel method based on compressed sensing (CS) is presented to improve the range resolution of the target with low computational complexity. First, a tool for electromagnetic calculation, such as CST Microwave Studio, is used to simulate the frequency response of the electromagnetic scattering of the target. Second, the range-resolved signal of the target is acquired by further processing. Third, a greedy algorithm is applied to this signal. By the iterative search of the maximum value from the signal rather than the calculation of the inner product for raw echo, the scattering coefficients of the target can be reconstructed efficiently. A series of experimental results demonstrates the effectiveness of our method.

    Stability-featured dynamic multi-path routing (SDMR) based on the existing Traffic engineering eXplicit Control Protocol (TeXCP) is proposed and evaluated for traffic engineering in terrestrial networks. SDMR abandons the sophisticated stability maintenance mechanisms of TeXCP, whose load balancing scheme is also modified in the proposed mechanism. SDMR is proved to be able to converge to a unique equilibria state, which has been corroborated by the simulations.

    Recent studies have obtained superior performance in image recognition tasks by using, as an image representation, the fully connected layer activations of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) trained with various kinds of images. However, the CNN representation is not very suitable for fine-grained image recognition tasks involving food image recognition. For improving performance of the CNN representation in food image recognition, we propose a novel image representation that is comprised of the covariances of convolutional layer feature maps. In the experiment on the ETHZ Food-101 dataset, our method achieved 58.65% averaged accuracy, which outperforms the previous methods such as the Bag-of-Visual-Words Histogram, the Improved Fisher Vector, and CNN-SVM.

    This paper considers an optimal stabilization problem of quantitative discrete event systems (DESs) under the influence of disturbances. We model a DES by a deterministic weighted automaton. The control cost is concerned with the sum of the weights along the generated trajectories reaching the target state. The region of weak attraction is the set of states of the system such that all trajectories starting from them can be controlled to reach a specified set of target states and stay there indefinitely. An optimal stabilizing controller is a controller that drives the states in this region to the set of target states with minimum control cost and keeps them there. We consider two control objectives: to minimize the worst-case control cost (1) subject to all enabled trajectories and (2) subject to the enabled trajectories starting by controllable events. Moreover, we consider the disturbances which are uncontrollable events that rarely occur in the real system but may degrade the control performance when they occur. We propose a linearithmic time algorithm for the synthesis of an optimal stabilizing controller which is robust to disturbances.

    In this letter, a micro-expression recognition method is investigated by integrating both spatio-temporal facial features and a regression model. To this end, we first perform a multi-scale facial region division for each facial image and then extract a set of local binary patterns on three orthogonal planes (LBP-TOP) features corresponding to divided facial regions of the micro-expression videos. Furthermore, we use GSLSR model to build the linear regression relationship between the LBP-TOP facial feature vectors and the micro expressions label vectors. Finally, the learned GSLSR model is applied to the prediction of the micro-expression categories for each test micro-expression video. Experiments are conducted on both CASME II and SMIC micro-expression databases to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method is better than the baseline micro-expression recognition method.

    This paper newly proposes and theoretically analyzes the performance of multi-hop free-space optical (FSO) systems employing optical amplify-and-forward (OAF) relaying technique and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). The proposed system can provide a low cost, low latency, high flexibility, and large bandwidth access network for multiple users in areas where installation of optical fiber is unfavorable. In WDM/FSO systems, WDM channels suffer from the interchannel crosstalk while FSO channels can be severely affected by the atmospheric turbulence. These impairments together with the accumulation of background and amplifying noises over multiple relays significantly degrade the overall system performance. To deal with this problem, the use of the M-ary pulse position modulation (M-PPM) together with the OAF relaying technique is advocated as a powerful remedy to mitigate the effects of atmospheric turbulence. For the performance analysis, we use a realistic model of Gaussian pulse propagation to investigate major atmospheric effects, including signal turbulence and pulse broadening. We qualitatively discuss the impact of various system parameters, including the required average transmitted powers per information bit corresponding to specific values of bit error rate (BER), transmission distance, number of relays, and turbulence strength. Our numerical results are also thoroughly validated by Monte-Carlo (M-C) simulations.

    Today, computer vision is used in different applications for intelligent transportation systems like: traffic surveillance, driver assistance, law enforcement etc. Amongst these applications, we are concentrating on speed measurement for law enforcement. In law enforcement applications, the presence of the license plate in the scene is a presupposition and metric parameters like vehicle's speed are to be estimated with a high degree of precision. The novelty of this paper is to propose a new precise, practical and fast procedure, with hierarchical architecture, to estimate the homraphic transform of the license plate and using this transform to estimate the vehicle's speed. The proposed method uses the RANSAC algorithm to improve the robustness of the estimation. Hence, it is possible to replace the peripheral equipment with vision based systems, or in conjunction with these peripherals, it is possible to improve the accuracy and reliability of the system. Results of experiments on different datasets, with different specifications, show that the proposed method can be used in law enforcement applications to measure the vehicle's speed.

  • D-MENTOR Algorithm for OSPF Protocol under Delay Constrain Supporting Unicast and Multicast Traffic

    Designing a backbone IP network, especially to support both unicast and multicast traffic under delay constraints, is a difficult problem. Real network design must consider cost, performance and reliability. Therefore, a simulator can help a network designer to test the functionality of the network before the implementation. This paper proposes a heuristic design algorithm called D-MENTOR, and the algorithm was developed by programming based on Mesh Network Topological Optimization and Routing Version 2 (MENTOR-II) to integrate as a new module of DElite tool. The simulation results show that, in almost all test cases, the proposed algorithm yields lower installation cost.

  • A Comprehensive Medicine Management System with Multiple Sources in a Nursing Home in Taiwan

    Residents living in a nursing home usually have established medical histories in multiple sources, and most previous medicine management systems have only focused on the integration of prescriptions and the identification of repeated drug uses. Therefore, a comprehensive medicine management system is proposed to integrate medical information from different sources. The proposed system not only detects inappropriate drugs automatically but also allows users to input such information for any non-prescription medicines that the residents take. Every participant can fully track the residents' latest medicine use online and in real time. Pharmacists are able to issue requests for suggestions on medicine use, and residents can also have a comprehensive understanding of their medicine use. The proposed scheme has been practically implemented in a nursing home in Taiwan. The evaluation results show that the average time to detect an inappropriate drug use and complete a medicine record is reduced. With automatic and precise comparisons, the repeated drugs and drug side effects are identified effectively such that the amount of medicine cost spent on the residents is also reduced. Consequently, the proactive feedback, real-time tracking, and interactive consulting mechanisms bind all parties together to realize a comprehensive medicine management system.

    We consider the problem of deciding whether a query can be rewritten by a nondeterministic view. It is known that rewriting is decidable if views are given by single-valued non-copying devices such as compositions of single-valued extended linear top-down tree transducers with regular look-ahead, and queries are given by deterministic MSO tree transducers. In this paper, we extend the result to the case that views are given by nondeterministic devices that are not always single-valued. We define two variants of rewriting: universal preservation and existential preservation, and discuss the decidability of them.

    In this paper a new method for noise removal from single-trial event-related potentials recorded with a multi-channel electroencephalogram is addressed. An observed signal is separated into multiple signals with a multi-channel Wiener filter whose coefficients are estimated based on parameter estimation of a probabilistic generative model that locally models the amplitude of each separated signal in the time-frequency domain. Effectiveness of using prior information about covariance matrices to estimate model parameters and frequency dependent covariance matrices were shown through an experiment with a simulated event-related potential data set.

    As three dimensional (3D) discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is widely used for high resolution volumetric data compression, and to further improve the performance of lossless coding, the adaptive directional lifting (ADL) structure based on non-separable 3D DWT with a (5,3) filter is proposed in this paper. The proposed 3D DWT has less lifting steps and better prediction performance compared to the existing separable 3D DWT with fixed filter coefficients. It also has compatibility with the conventional DWT defined by the JPEG2000 international standard. The proposed method shows comparable and better results with the non-separable 3D DWT and separable 3D DWT and it is effective for lossless coding of high resolution volumetric data.

    There is a strong demand to enjoy broadband and stable Internet connectivity not only in office and the home but also in high-speed train. Several systems are providing high-speed train with Internet connectivity using various technologies such as leaky coaxial cable (LCX), Wi-Fi, and WiMAX. However, their actual throughputs are less than 2Mbps. We developed a free-space optical (FSO) communication transceiver called LaserTrainComm2014 that achieves the throughput of 1 Gbps between the ground and a train. LaserTrainComm2014 employs a high-speed image sensor for coarse tracking and a quadrant photo-diode (QPD) for accurate tracking. Since the image captured by the high-speed image sensor has several types of noise, image processing is necessary to detect the beacon light of the other LaserTrainComm2014. As a result of field experiments in a vehicle test course, LaserTrainComm2014 achieves handover time of 21 milliseconds (ms) in the link layer at the speed of 60km/h. Even if the network layer signaling takes time of 10 milliseconds, the total communication disruption time due to handover is short enough to provide passengers with Internet connectivity for live streaming Internet applications such as YouTube, Internet Radio, and Skype.

    The information maximization (Infomax) based on information entropy theory is a class of methods that can be used to blindly separate the sources. Torkkola applied the Infomax criterion to blindly separate the mixtures where the sources have been delayed with respect to each other. Compared to the frequency domain methods, this time domain method has simple adaptation rules and can be easily implemented. However, Torkkola's method works only in the real valued field. In this letter, the Infomax for blind separation of the delayed sources is extended to the complex case for processing of complex valued signals. Firstly, based on the gradient ascent the adaptation rules for the parameters of the unmixing network are derived and the steps of algorithm are given. Then, a measurement matrix is constructed to evaluate the separation performance. The results of computer experiment support the extended algorithm.

    The cycling wheelchair “Profhand” was developed in Japan as locomotion and lower limb rehabilitation device for hemiplegic subjects and elderly persons. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) control of paralyzed lower limbs enables application of the Profhand to paraplegic subjects as a rehabilitation device. In this paper, simplified muscle stimulation control for FES cycling with Profhand was examined for practical application, because cycling speed was low and not stable in our preliminary study and there was a difficulty in setting stimulation electrodes for the gluteus maximus. First, a guideline of target cycling speed to be achieved by FES cycling was determined from voluntary cycling with healthy subjects in order to evaluate FES cycling control. The cycling speed of 0.6m/s was determined as acceptable value and 1.0m/s was as ideal one. Then, stimulation to the gluteus maximus and that to the dorsiflexor muscles in addition to the quadriceps femoris were examined for simple FES cycling control for Profhand with healthy subjects. Stimulation timing was adjusted automatically during cycling based on muscle response time to electrical stimulation and cycling speed, which was shown to be effective for FES cycling control. Simple FES cycling control with Profhand removing stimulation to the gluteus maximus was found to be feasible. Stimulation to the dorsiflexor muscles with the quadriceps femoris was suggested to be effective for practical, simple FES cycling with Profhand in case of removing the gluteus maximus stimulation.

    This paper proposes 1-bit feedforward distortion compensation for digital radio frequency conversion (DRFC) with 1-bit bandpass delta-sigma modulation (BP-DSM). The 1-bit BP-DSM allows direct RF signal transmission from a digitally modulated signal. However, it has been previously reported that 1-bit digital pulse trains with non-ideal rectangle waveform cause spectrum regrowth. The proposed architecture adds a feedforward path with another 1-bit BP-DSM and so can cancel out the distortion components at any target carrier frequency. Both the main signal and the distortion compensation signal are 1-bit digital pulse trains and so no additional analog RF circuit is required for distortion compensation. Simulation results show that the proposed method holds the adjacent channel leakage ratio to 60dB for LTE signal transmission. A prototype of the proposed 1-bit DRFC with an additional 1-bit BP-DSM in the feedforward path shows an ACLR of 50dB, 4dB higher than that of the conventional 1-bit DRFC.

  • WHOSA: Network Flow Classification Based on Windowed Higher-Order Statistical Analysis

    Flow classification is of great significance for network management. Machine-learning-based flow classification is widely used nowadays, but features which depict the non-Gaussian characteristics of network flows are still absent. In this paper, we propose the Windowed Higher-order Statistical Analysis (WHOSA) for machine-learning-based flow classification. In our methodology, a network flow is modeled as three different time series: the flow rate sequence, the packet length sequence and the inter-arrival time sequence. For each sequence, both the higher-order moments and the largest singular values of the Bispectrum are computed as features. Some lower-order statistics are also computed from the distribution to build up the feature set for contrast, and C4.5 decision tree is chosen as the classifier. The results of the experiment reveals the capability of WHOSA in flow classification. Besides, when the classifier gets fully learned, the WHOSA feature set exhibit stronger discriminative power than the lower-order statistical feature set does.

  • How to Combine Translation Probabilities and Question Expansion for Question Classification in cQA Services

    This paper claims to use a new question expansion method for question classification in cQA services. The input questions consist of only a question whereas training data do a pair of question and answer. Thus they cannot provide enough information for good classification in many cases. Since the answer is strongly associated with the input questions, we try to create a pseudo answer to expand each input question. Translation probabilities between questions and answers and a pseudo relevant feedback technique are used to generate the pseudo answer. As a result, we obtain the significant improved performances when two approaches are effectively combined.

    In our previous work [12], [13], we introduced generalized feed-forward shift registers (GF2SR, for short) to apply them to secure and testable scan design. In this paper, we introduce another class of generalized shift registers called generalized feedback shift registers (GFSR, for short), and consider the properties of GFSR that are useful for secure scan design. We present how to control/observe GFSR to guarantee scan-in and scan-out operations that can be overlapped in the same way as the conventional scan testing. Testability and security of scan design using GFSR are considered. The cardinality of each class is clarified. We also present how to design strongly secure GFSR as well as GF2SR considered in [13].

    MapReduce is considered as the de facto framework for storing and processing massive data due to its fascinating features: simplicity, flexibility, fault tolerance and scalability. However, since the MapReduce framework does not provide an efficient access method to data (i.e., an index), whole data should be retrieved even though a user wants to access a small portion of data. Thus, in this paper, we devise an efficient algorithm constructing quadtrees with MapReduce. Our proposed algorithms reduce the index construction time by utilizing a sampling technique to partition a data set. To improve the query performance, we extend the quadtree construction algorithm in which the adjacent nodes of a quadtree are integrated when the number of points located in the nodes is less than the predefined threshold. Furthermore, we present an effective algorithm for incremental update. Our experimental results show the efficiency of our proposed algorithms in diverse environments.
