  • Cross-Layering Optimization for Low Energy Consumption in Wireless Body Area Networks

    Wireless body area networks (WBANs) have to work with low power and long lifetime to satisfy human biological safety requirements in e-health; therefore extremely low energy consumption is significant for WBANs. IEEE 802.15.6 standard has been published for wearable and implanted applications which provide communication technology requirements in WBANs. In this paper, the cross-layering optimization methodology is used to minimize the network energy consumption. Both the priority strategy and sleep mechanism in IEEE802.15.6 are considered. Macroscopic sleep model based on WBAN traffic priority and microscopic sleep model based on MAC structure are proposed. Then the network energy consumption optimization problem is solved by Lagrange dual method, the master problem are vertically decomposed into two sub problems in MAC and transport layers which are dealt with gradient method. Finally, a solution including self-adaption sleep mechanism and node rate controlling is proposed. The results of this paper indicate that the algorithm converges quickly and reduces the network energy consumption remarkably.

  • Experimental Investigation of Co-channel and Adjacent Channel Operations of Microwave Power and IEEE 802.11g Data Transmissions

    We discuss the division of radio resources in the time and frequency domains for wireless local area network (WLAN) devices powered with microwave energy. In general, there are two ways to avoid microwave power transmission (MPT) from influencing data communications: adjacent channel operation of continuous MPT and WLAN data transmission and co-channel operation of intermittent MPT and WLAN data transmission. Experimental results reveal that, even when we implement these methods, several problems arise because WLAN devices have been developed without supposing the existence of MPT. One problem clarified in our experiment is that adjacent channel operation at 2.4GHz does not necessarily perform well owing to the interference from MPT. This interference occurs regardless of the frequency separation at 2.4GHz. The other problem is that intermittent MPT could result in throughput degradation owing to the data rate control algorithm and the association scheme of the WLAN. In addition, the experimental results imply that a microwave energy source and a WLAN device should share information on the timings of intermittent MPT and data transmission to avoid buffer overflow.

  • D-AVTree: DHT-Based Search System to Support Scalable Multi-Attribute Queries

    At present, vast numbers of information resources are available on the Internet. However, one emerging issue is how to search and exploit these information resources in an efficient and flexible manner with high scalability. In this study, we focused our attention on the design of a distributed hash table (DHT)-based search system that supports efficient scalable multi-attribute queries of information resources in a distributed manner. Our proposed system, named D-AVTree, is built on top of a ring-based DHT, which partitions a one-dimensional key space across nodes in the system. It utilizes a descriptive naming scheme, which names each resource using an attribute-value (AV) tree, and the resource names are mapped to d-bit keys in order to distribute the resource information to responsible nodes based on a DHT routing algorithm. Our mapping scheme maps each AV branch of a resource name to a d-bit key where AV branches that share a subsequence of AV pairs are mapped to a continuous portion of the key space. Therefore, our mapping scheme ensures that the number of resources distributed to a node is small and it facilitates efficient multi-attribute queries by querying only a small number of nodes. Further, the scheme has good compatibility with key-based load balancing algorithms for DHT-based networks. Our system can achieve both efficiency and a good degree of load balancing even when the distribution of AV pairs in the resource names is skewed. Our simulation results demonstrated the efficiency of our solution in terms of the distribution cost, query hit ratio, and the degree of load balancing compared with conventional approaches.

  • Implementation and Feasibility Study of Co-channel Operation System of Microwave Power Transmissions to IEEE 802.11-Based Batteryless Sensor

    In this paper, we study the feasibility of a batteryless wireless sensor supplied with energy by using microwave power transmission (MPT). If we perform co-channel operation of MPT and wireless local area networks (WLANs) for the sake of spectral efficiency, a time division method for MPT and WLAN communications is required to avoid serious interference from MPT to WLAN data transmissions. In addition, to reduce the power consumption of a sensor, the use of power-save operation of the sensor is desirable. We proposed a scheduling scheme that allocates time for MPT and WLAN communications. Specifically, in the proposed scheduling system, an energy source transmits microwave power to a sensor station except when the sensor station transmits data frames or receives beacon frames. In addition, in the proposed scheduling system, we force the remaining energy of the sensor station to converge to a maximum value by adjusting the time interval of data transmission from the sensor station such that the power consumption of the sensor station is reduced. On the basis of the proposition, we implemented a scheduling system and then confirmed that it performed successfully in the conducted experiments. Finally, we discussed the feasibility of the proposed scheduling scheme by evaluating the coverage and then showed that the scheduling scheme can be applied to closed space or room.

    In this paper, a new database suitable for HMM-based automatic Filipino speech recognition is described for the purpose of training a domain-independent, large-vocabulary continuous speech recognition system. Although it is known that high-performance speech recognition systems depend on a superior speech database used in the training stage, due to the lack of such an appropriate database, previous reports on Filipino speech recognition had to contend with serious data sparsity issues. In this paper we alleviate such sparsity through appropriate data analysis that makes the evaluation results more reliable. The best system is identified through its low word-error rate to a cross-validation set containing almost three hours of unknown speech data. Language-dependent problems are discussed, and their impact on accuracy was analyzed. The approach is currently data driven, however it serves as a competent baseline model for succeeding future developments.

  • Speech Emotion Recognition Using Transfer Learning

    A major challenge for speech emotion recognition is that when the training and deployment conditions do not use the same speech corpus, the recognition rates will obviously drop. Transfer learning, which has successfully addressed the cross-domain classification or recognition problem, is presented for cross-corpus speech emotion recognition. First, by using the maximum mean discrepancy embedding (MMDE) optimization and dimension reduction algorithms, two close low-dimensional feature spaces are obtained for source and target speech corpora, respectively. Then, a classifier function is trained using the learned low-dimensional features in the labeled source corpus, and directly applied to the unlabeled target corpus for emotion label recognition. Experimental results demonstrate that the transfer learning method can significantly outperform the traditional automatic recognition technique for cross-corpus speech emotion recognition.

    For two-dimensional IIR digital filters described by the Fornasini-Marchesini second model, the problem of jointly optimizing high-order error feedback and realization to minimize the effects of roundoff noise at the filter output subject to l2-scaling constraints is investigated. The problem at hand is converted into an unconstrained optimization problem by using linear-algebraic techniques. The unconstrained optimization problem is then solved iteratively by applying an efficient quasi-Newton algorithm with closed-form formulas for key gradient evaluation. Finally, a numerical example is presented to illustrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed technique.

  • Multiple-Valued Fine-Grain Reconfigurable VLSI Using a Global Tree Local X-Net Network

    A global tree local X-net network (GTLX) is introduced to realize high-performance data transfer in a multiple-valued fine-grain reconfigurable VLSI (MVFG-RVLSI). A global pipelined tree network is utilized to realize high-performance long-distance bit-parallel data transfer. Moreover, a logic-in-memory architecture is employed for solving data transfer bottleneck between a block data memory and a cell. A local X-net network is utilized to realize simple interconnections and compact switch blocks for eight-near neighborhood data transfer. Moreover, multiple-valued signaling is utilized to improve the utilization of the X-net network, where two binary data can be transferred from two adjacent cells to one common adjacent cell simultaneously at each “X” intersection. To evaluate the MVFG-RVLSI, a fast Fourier transform (FFT) operation is mapped onto a previous MVFG-RVLSI using only the X-net network and the MVFG-RVLSI using the GTLX. As a result, the computation time, the power consumption and the transistor count of the MVFG-RVLSI using the GTLX are reduced by 25%, 36% and 56%, respectively, in comparison with those of the MVFG-RVLSI using only the X-net network.

    Smartphones have become vital devices in the current on-the-go Thai culture. Typically, virtual keyboards serve as tools for text input on smartphones. Due to the limited screen area and the large number of Thai characters, the size of each button on the keyboard is quite small. This leads to character mistyping and low typing speed. In this paper, we present a typical framework of a Thai Input Method on smartphones which includes four processes; Character Candidate Generation, Word Candidate Generation, Word Candidate Display, and Model Update. This framework not only works with Thai, it works with other letter-based languages as well. We also review virtual keyboards and techniques currently used and available for Thai text input.

    Screen content generally consists of text, images, and videos variously generated or captured by computers and other electronic devices. For the purpose of coding such screen content, we introduce alternative intra prediction (AIP) modes based on the emerging high efficiency video coding (HEVC) standard. With text and graphics, edges are much sharper and a large number of corners exist. These properties make it difficult to predict blocks using a one-directional intra prediction mode. The proposed method provides two-directional prediction by combining the existing vertical and horizontal prediction modes. Experiments show that our AIP modes provide an average BD-rate reduction of 2.8% relative to HEVC for general screen contents, and a 0.04% reduction for natural contents.

    Earlier attempts to deploy two units of parametric loudspeakers have shown encouraging results in improving the accuracy of spatial audio reproductions. As compared to a pair of conventional loudspeakers, this improvement is mainly a result of being free of crosstalk due to the sharp directivity of the parametric loudspeaker. By replacing the normal parametric loudspeaker with the steerable parametric loudspeaker, a flexible sweet spot can be created that tolerates head movements of the listener. However, spatial aliasing effects of the primary frequency waves are always observed in the steerable parametric loudspeaker. We are motivated to make use of the spatial aliasing effects to create two sound beams from one unit of the steerable parametric loudspeaker. Hence, a reduction of power consumption and physical size can be achieved by cutting down the number of loudspeakers used in an audio system. By introducing a new parameter, namely the relative steering angle, we propose a stereophonic beamsteering method that can control the amplitude difference corresponding to the interaural level difference (ILD) between two sound beams. Currently, this proposed method does not support the reproduction of interaural time differences (ITD).

  • Experimental Study on Root Profile of Molten Bridge under Different Current at Low Opening Speed

    To study the molten bridge phenomenon of contacts at the initial breaking process, an experimental device of molten bridge between slowly opening contacts was developed. The system consists of the contact moving control module, the circuit load and the observation module. The molten bridge of copper contact under two load conditions 9,V/19,A and 9,V/7.3,A were studied. The voltage and current characteristics curves of Cu molten bridge were extracted and the resistance and the instantaneous power of the molten bridge were analyzed. The image of the Cu molten bridge diameter was captured by CCD under 9,V/19,A and the influences of the contact force and the separation speed on the molten bridge length and the crater diameter of the anode were studied. The root profile of the Cu contacts after separation was analyzed by digital microscope. Research results show that the Cu molten bridge length has the same changing trend as the diameter of the anode crater. They both decrease with the increment of the separation speed and the decrement of the contact force.

  • Frame Collision Reduction Method Employing Adaptive Transmission Control for IEEE802.11 Wireless LAN System

    The IEEE 802.11 distributed coordinated function (DCF) adopts carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) as its medium access control (MAC) protocol. In a wireless local area network (WLAN) stations (STAs) congested situation, the performance of the WLAN system is significantly degraded due to a collision between the STAs. In this paper, we propose a simple method that decreases the number of frame collisions. After a successful transmission, the proposed method refrains from transmission during certain time which is defined as post-inter-frame space (Post-IFS). This mechanism improves the system performance including the throughput characteristics and access delay by reducing the number of competing STAs. The length of the Post-IFS is a key factor in improving the system performance for the proposed method. If the access point (AP) can estimate the optimal value of the Post-IFS, collision-free operation similar to that in centralized control is performed. Even if the optimal Post-IFS is not estimated, the number of competing STAs and the collision probability are decreased. Computer simulations verify that the proposed method achieves 40% higher system throughput compared to the conventional CSMA/CA for a network with 50 STAs.

    The data rate of VLSI interconnections has been increasing according to the demand for high-speed operation of semiconductors such as CPUs. To realize high performance VLSI systems, high-speed data communication has become an important factor. However, at high-speed data rates, it is difficult to achieve accurate communication without bit errors because of inter-symbol interference (ISI). This paper presents high-speed data communication techniques for VLSI systems using Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (THP). Since THP can eliminate the ISI with limiting average and peak power of transmitter signaling, THP is suitable for implementing advanced low-voltage VLSI systems. In this paper, 4-PAM (Pulse amplitude modulation) with THP has been employed to achieve high-speed data communication in VLSI systems. Simulation results show that THP can remove the ISI without increasing peak and average power of a transmitter. Moreover, simulation results clarify that multiple-valued data communication is very effective to reduce implementation costs for realizing high-speed serial links.

  • SRT-Rank: Ranking Keyword Query Results in Relational Databases Using the Strongly Related Tree

    A top-k keyword query in relational databases returns k trees of tuples — where the tuples containing the query keywords are connected via primary key-foreign key relationships — in the order of relevance to the query. Existing works are classified into two categories: 1) the schema-based approach and 2) the schema-free approach. We focus on the former utilizing database schema information for more effective ranking of the query results. Ranking measures used in existing works can be classified into two categories: 1) the size of the tree (i.e., the syntactic score) and 2) ranking measures, such as TF-IDF, borrowed from the information retrieval field. However, these measures do not take into account semantic relevancy among relations containing the tuples in the query results. In this paper, we propose a new ranking method that ranks the query results by utilizing semantic relevancy among relations containing the tuples at the schema level. First, we propose a structure of semantically strongly related relations, which we call the strongly related tree (SRT). An SRT is a tree that maximally connects relations based on the lossless join property. Next, we propose a new ranking method, SRT-Rank, that ranks the query results by a new scoring function augmenting existing ones with the concept of the SRT. SRT-Rank is the first research effort that applies semantic relevancy among relations to ranking the results of keyword queries. To show the effectiveness of SRT-Rank, we perform experiments on synthetic and real datasets by augmenting the representative existing methods with SRT-Rank. Experimental results show that, compared with existing methods, SRT-Rank improves performance in terms of four quality measures — the mean normalized discounted cumulative gain (nDCG), the number of queries whose top-1 result is relevant to the query, the mean reciprocal rank, and the mean average precision — by up to 46.9%, 160.0%, 61.7%, and 63.8%, respectively. In addition, we show that the query performance of SRT-Rank is comparable to or better than those of existing methods.

    Let T1,T2,...,Tk be spanning trees in a graph G. If, for any two vertices u,v of G, the paths joining u and v on the k trees are mutually vertex-disjoint, then T1,T2,...,Tk are called completely independent spanning trees (CISTs for short) of G. The construction of CISTs can be applied in fault-tolerant broadcasting and secure message distribution on interconnection networks. Hasunuma (2001) first introduced the concept of CISTs and conjectured that there are k CISTs in any 2k-connected graph. Unfortunately, this conjecture was disproved by Péterfalvi recently. In this note, we give a necessary condition for k-connected k-regular graphs with ⌊k/2⌋ CISTs. Based on this condition, we provide more counterexamples for Hasunuma's conjecture. By contrast, we show that there are two CISTs in 4-regular chordal rings CR(N,d) with N=k(d-1)+j under the condition that k ≥ 4 is even and 0 ≤ j ≤ 4. In particular, the diameter of each constructed CIST is derived.

    We propose a speaker adaptation method based on the probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA) of acoustic models. We define a training matrix which is represented in a two-way array and decompose the training models by PPCA to construct bases. In the two-way array representation, each training model is represented as a matrix and the columns of each training matrix are treated as training vectors. We formulate the adaptation equation in the maximum a posteriori (MAP) framework using the bases and the prior.

  • An Immersive and Interactive Map Touring System Based on Traveler Conceptual Models

    Digital map systems can be categorized, based on the support they provide, into map navigation systems and map touring systems. Map navigation systems put more focus on helping travelers finding routes or directions instantly. By contrast, map touring systems such as Google Maps running on desktop computers are built to support users in developing their routes and survey knowledge before they go for travel. In this paper, traveler conceptual models are proposed as an interaction paradigm to enhance user immersion and interaction experience on map touring systems. A map touring system, MapXplorer, is also introduced as a proof of concept with its system design and implementation explained in detail. Twenty participants were invited to join the user study that investigates users' performance and preferences on navigation and exploration tasks. The results of experiments show that the proposed system surpasses traditional map touring systems on both navigation and exploration tasks for about 50 percent on average, and provides better user experience.

  • Efficient Screen Space Anisotropic Blurred Soft Shadows

    Shadow mapping is an efficient method to generate shadows in real time computer graphics and has broad variations from hard to soft shadow synthesis. Soft shadowing based on shadow mapping is a blurring technique on a shadow map or on screen space. Blurring on screen space has an advantage for efficient sampling on a shadow map, since the blurred target array has exactly the same coordinates as the screen. However, a previous blurring method on screen space has a drawback: the generated shadow is not correct when a view direction has a large angle to the normal of the shadowed plane. In this paper, we introduce a new screen space based method for soft shadowing that is fast and generates soft shadows more accurately than the previous screen space soft shadow mapping method. The resultant images show shadows produced by our method just stand in the same place, while shadows by the previous method change in terms of penumbra while the view moves. Surprisingly, although our method is more complex than the previous method, the measurement results of the calculation time show our method is almost the same performance. This is because it controls the blurring area more accurately and thus successfully reduces multiplications for blurring.

    Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) are widely deployed for internet access. Multiple interfering Access Points (APs) lead to a significant increase in collisions, that reduces throughput and affects media traffic. Thus, interference mitigation among different APs becomes a crucial issue in Multi-Cell WLAN systems. One solution to this issue is to assign a different frequency channel to each AP so as to prevent neighboring cells from operating on the same channel. However, most of the existing WLANs today operate in the unlicensed 2.4GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) band, which suffers from lack of the available channels. Therefore, effective channel assignment to minimize the interference in Multi-Cell WLANs is necessary. In this article, we formulate the channel assignment problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem that minimizes the worst case total interference power. The main advantage of this algorithm is that it provides a global solution and at the same time guarantees a non-overlapping channel assignment. We also propose a Lagrangian relaxation approach to transform the MILP into a low complexity linear program which can be solved efficiently in real time, even for large sized networks. Simulation results reveal that both the MILP algorithm and the Lagrangian relaxation approach provide a total interference reduction below the default setting of having all APs assigned the same channel. In addition, simulation results on cumulative density function (CDF) of the SINR at the user level prove the validity of the proposed algorithms.
