    Precise measurements of temperature dependence of the Andreev reflection current for the N–I–S junctions were carried out. Au and Pb were used as N (normal metal) and S (superconducting material), respectively. The experimental results agreed with the analyses based on the Arnold theory.

    This paper discusses the characteristics of the nonlinearly amplified spread–spectrum (SS) signals. We evaluate the symbol error–rate performance with the conventional receiver, changing the length of the spreading sequence. In addition, we also propose the receiver with MLSE. The configuration of the MLSE for the nonlinearly amplified signals is generally complicated; however we show that the complexity of the MLSE receiver can be reduced, as the number of required reference sequences in the receiver for an SS signal is small. As the result, it is shown that the error rate performance of the nonlinearly amplified SS signal can be improved by this proposed receiver and that the degradation caused by the nonlinear amplification can be made negligibly small with a sufficiently long spreading sequence.

  • Influence of Cross-Sectional Deformation on Coplanar Waveguide Characteristics for the Use of Optical Modulator

    In this paper, the influences of the cross-sectional deformation on the coplanar waveguide (CPW) characteristics for the use of Ti: LiNbO3optical modulator are presented based on quasi-static analysis. In particular, the influences of the changes in the thickness of Ti: LiNbO3 substrate and the cross-sectional shape of electrodes are studied in detail by using the finite element method proposed previously. As a result, it is found that the propagation characteristics of the dominant mode change significantly with the thickness of LiNbO3 substrate when it is less than 100 µm. It is also shown that an inverted trapezoidal deformation of the electrode cross section is promising because a wider electrode gap and thinner electrodes are available in the design of optical modulators.

    We are developing GENESIS, a new seamless total environment for designing, developing, installing, and operating various types of telecommunication networks as extremely large distributed processing applications in the future network integrated by ATM. Similar uniform architectures for quick introduction and easy management of service or operation applications have been proposed, such as by TINA, but there has been insufficient study on how to operate and con figure those applications. This paper discusses the implementation model and execution environment in GENESIS from the viewpoint of flexible operation according to network conditions. The implementation model can describe detailed configurations under various conditions on design or operation, independently of the execution environment. To achieve the goals of GENESIS, our execution environment provides message handling functions and a transparent interface for controlling network resources independently of the configuration, and dynamic reconfiguration functions that are independent of the execution. This paper also reports the prototype system GENESIS-1. The GENESIS-1 message handling mechanism and the effect of the reconfiguration functions are described.

    Coupling optics for a monolithic array LD module has been developed. High efficient and small sized confocal optics with aspheric lenses based on hyperbolic surfaces has been designed to achieve the uniformity of coupling loss. A small sized (7.2 cc) 4 channel array LD module with this optics was fabricated. This module has low (4.2 dB) and uniform (0.5 dB) coupling loss.

    We investigate chaotic dynamics due to the homoclinic points observed from a widely used phase–locked loops operating as a frequency–modulated demodulator. Our purpose is to obtain parameter region of the homoclinic points using Melnikov method in a periodically-forced second–order nonlinear nonautonomous equation representing phase–locked loops. If the PLL equation has large damping (actually, this is the case of standard PLL), the unperturbed system becomes non–Hamiltonian. Therefore, one cannot obtain the saddle loop analytically in general, and hence it is very difficult to apply Melnikov method to such a system. Since the current PLL used in practice has a triangular phase detector (i.e., a periodic triangular shaped function) as its nonlinearity, we can use piecewise–linear method, and thus we are succeeded in deriving both the saddle loop and the Melnikov integral analytically even in the PLL equation with practical large damping. We have obtained many boundary curves for homoclinic tangency for a wide range of damping coefficients and modulation frequency. In particular, we treat the general case of β2ζ in this paper where β denotes the normalized natural frequency and ζ denotes the damping coefficient. We compare this results with our previous totally numerical results and have found that this method gives more accurate boundary curves than our previous method.

  • A Design Method of Distributed Telecommunication System Based on the ODP Viewpoint Approach

    Along with the improvement of micro processors and local area networks, a distributed system becomes useful to realize a telecommunication system. It has potential advantage to achieve both high performance and high reliability. However, the design of a distributed system tends to be more complicated compared to a conventional centralized system. For the purpose of the standardization of distributed processing, ISO and ITU-T study the Open Distributed Processing (ODP) and are currently standardizing the Basic Reference Model of ODP (RM-ODP). To avoid dealing with the complexity of distributed systems, RM-ODP defines five viewpoints. The viewpoint approach of RM-ODP is proposed as a framework for the design of a distributed system. Although some previous works give the design methods of distributed systems based on the ODP viewpoint approach, the detailed design method has not been fully specified or all of the five viewpoints are not taken into account. In this paper, we describe a detailed design method for a distributed telecommunication system based on the ODP viewpoint approach. The method applies the five viewpoints to the three phases of design of a distributed system, that is, requirement analysis, functional design and detailed design phase. It clarifies what specifications for the target system should be made from the individual viewpoints and how the specifications are related each other. It also takes account of the platform which provides the distribution support, and gives the design method for both the platform and the application specific functions on the platform. The design method is examined by applying it to the design of a distributed MHS system supporting X.400 series protocols. In this example, the remote procedure call based on the client-server model is selected as the base of the platform. The result shows that our method is useful to simplify the complexity of the design for a distributed telecommunication system.

    Multimedia services based on broadband ISDN (B-ISDN) technology need a network architecture that satisfies the requirements of users, carriers, and vendors. This paper describes a new network architecture for B-ISDN service control and management based on INA. We list general requirements, and present implementation issues of INA. A network architecture and main components, which resolve implementation issues, is then proposed. We also describe a video-on-demand service based on our proposed architecture.

    The mechanical impedance of silicone–gel model or chest surface has been measured and the viscoelasticity and effective vibrating radius have been obtained from the impedance. They depend on the distance between the internal block of the silicone–gel/ribs of right chest and the gel surface/skin surface. The 3–D image of internal structure is reconstructed, based on the relation between the distance from the surface and the effective vibrating radius.

    In this paper, we propose the architecture of BALANCE (Better Adaptive Load-balancing through Acquiring kNowledge of Characteristic of an Environment) in which users can submit their jobs without acquiring either a status of an environment or characteristics of jobs and servers even in a widely connected heterogeneous network. The architecture of BALANCE includes three types of information bases and two types of daemons. Information bases, namely job, resource, and environment information base, manage the knowledge of job characteristics, available resources for CPUs, and status of the environment, respectively, as a proxy for users. The dispatching daemon selects an adequate server for each job using knowledge stored in the information bases. A service daemon executes each job. On completing each job, a service daemon gets a statistic of the job and returns it to the dispatching daemon where the job came from so that the statistic will be available at the next dispatching time. BALANCE enables an environment (1) to balance the load, (2) to share software functions as well as hardware facilities, and (3) to learn a user's job characteristics. We have implemented a prototype with more than 50 heterogeneous UNIX workstations connected by different networks. Two simple experiments on this prototype are presented. These experiments show a load balancing scheme that takes the characteristics of each job into account.

    Synchronization has been one of the problems in M–ary spread spectrum communication systems. In this letter, we propose the frame synchronization method using the Hadamard matrix and a frame synchronization method of PCM communication systems. Moreover, we analyze the probabilities of keeping synchronous state and frame renewal rates, and we evaluate the relationship between these probabilities and the number of stages of counters.

    This paper describes two main technologies for achieving reliable real-time distributed communications systems. One is the technology to prevent the influence of a fault in an autonomous distributed system from spreading to the whole system (called autonomous distributed system control). The other is a software structure based on distributed processing, the object-oriented approach, and layering for better maintainability and expandability (called OO software structure). For the autonomous distributed system control, several inter-subsystem communication methods are proposed and evaluated. From the standpoints of the fault processing and processing load, frames should be sent through a data link over ATM connection and when a fault occurs the link should be switched over without loss of data. A pilot system achieved good reliability without an excessive number of dynamic steps. This autonomous control method will lead to a highly reliable communications system with large capacity. For the OO software structure, this paper gives experimental results from the implementation of a prototype system. Its distributed environment should lead to high reliability by extending the CHILL run-time routine (RTR). This software structure promises to provide service quickly, to reduce costs, and to make the development of each layer's software independent. A real-time OS, e.g., CTRON kernel combined with RTR can give real-time performance, high reliability and high productivity over the distributed system. The use of RTR can reduce the time for the call recovery process.

    Customers' requirements for telecommunications services have been changing from simple point-to-point and single-medium communications to multiple-point and multiple-media, as well as changes in bandwidth requirements. In addition, customers' end stations (ES) will not be homogeneous, from POTS-like terminal to sophisticated multimedia workstation that handles various kind of media. This paper discusses communications management architectures that provide multimedia multipoint communications in a heterogeneous ESs environment. It summarizes existing communications management architectures, and discusses advanced architectures that provide multimedia communications, multipoint communications and heterogeneity handling capabilities in a flexible and efficient manner. The objectives of this architecture are to integrate multimedia multipoint communications capabilities into the network, and provide customers with versatile communications service request interface which can handle from plain single-medium point-to-point communications to multimedia multipoint communications. This paper especially focuses on the management functionalities for multimedia multipoint service fabrics (MMSF) which may be owned by the network provider, the third-party service provider, or the customer. It discusses variations of MMSF management protocol implementations in the case that the MMSF is owned by either of the three. It also discusses implementation of customers' various operations requests to the MMSF in the communication phase.

    This paper first proposes an object-oriented service network model, which is composed of application, server and resource object groups, from both viewpoints of rapid and smooth introduction and effective execution of the next generation IN services. The paper also, proposes a testbed system, which is referred to as "To-be-IN (Testbed on Object-oriented and B-ISDN Environment for IN)", for evaluating network architecture based on the proposed model. Using the testbed, several technical issues can be solved such as object-oriented realization of IN services, a provision of distribution transparent environment and a transition strategy from today's IN network. The testbed system is constructed on a currently available computing environment in which a distribution transparency mechanism is added. This system provides Service Creation Environment (SCE) for a purpose of achieving seamless software transfer from a development phase to an operation phase in the object-oriented service network model. The paper finally summarizes some results of an experimental implementation of the system.

    Nonmonotonic reasoning is a logical inference system which attempts to approximate human commonsense reasoning and is characterized as defeasible: having reasonably drawn a conclusion from some premises we may be forced to retract that conclusion upon learning new facts. This paper introduces a Petri net model for nonmonotonic reasoning with nonmonotonic rules generated by annotated logic programs and the unless operator. In the Petri net model, a fixpoint of a nonmonotonic theory can be represented as a maximal and consistent support of a firing sequence. We propose a structural method for finding extensions (coherent consequences) for a given set of nonmonotonic logic rules. It is based on the T-invariant technique for testing fireability of a goal transition in the Petri net model of Horn clause logic programs.

  • Analysis of Bonding State in Clad Contact Using Ultrasonic Microscope

    In clad contacts of bonded dissimilar metals used in relays and switches, the bonding state affects the switching performance of those devices. Examining the bonding state and analyzing the relationship between the bonding state and the causes of malfunction, such as welding of the contact, leads to improvement in reliability of electromechanical devices. In this experiment we examined, with an ultrasonic microscope, the bonding state in riveted clad contacts which had been subjected to load-breaks of in-rush current, and were able to demonstrate the causal relation of the bonding state with malfunctions of the contacts. The use of the ultrasonic microscope made it possible to perform a hitherto difficult detailed analysis of the bonding state of clad contacts. It was also confirmed that this was an extremely effective method for studying the relationship with switching performance.

    Arc discharge between electrodes of relays and switches often causes contact surface damage through material transfer and arc erosion. Especially, material transfer sometimes occurs and brings serious failure even under lower load that is quite smaller than the minimum arc current value of contact material. In this paper, contact surface configuration, material transfer, and arc erosion characteristics of Ag and AgPd 60 contacts were experimentally studied after 0.5 or 1 million switching operations at various load levels. The followings can be made clear. Firstly, it was confirmed that the arcs and material transfer occurred even under such current that was lower than the minimum arc current. Therefore, the definition of the arc occurrence boundary current was newly determined. Secondly, the relation between load conditions (current and power supply voltage) and contact surface configuration (craters and pips) caused by material transfer was studied. The arc erosion behaviors of tested samples could be classified into two types: material transfer type and wear-out type. As one of the primary factors of transition from the former type to the latter one, contact activation was considered. The influences of load conditions and organic gas emitted from relay structure on arc characteristics was experimentally examined. The results indicated that load current greatly influenced the amount of material transfer and that power supply voltage affected the occurrence of the wear-out type significantly. The activation behavior of the contact surface could be found through observing the bridge voltage waveform.

    ISO and ITU-T have developed the standard concept of the Telecommunications Management Network (TMN). This standard does not, however, specify interface implementation. The user requires an Application Programming Interface (API) that bridges user application and the TMN concept to construct a TMN-based application. This paper proposes an object oriented API (OOAPI) that is suitable for TMN-based operations system implementation. OOAPI is one interface of the Common Management Information Service Element (CMISE), and uses the Common Management Information Protocol (CMIP). OOAPI is composed of two C++ programming language constructs: Data Object and Interface object "M_User". The Data Object makes it easier for the user to access management information. The M_User provides a connection-less CMISE interface because the OOAPI handles CMIP association automatically. The M_User also provides MO location-transparency by using the OSI Directory Service. This paper compares the existing MO location-transparency schemes with the OOAPI method, and clarifies the advantages of OOAPI. This paper also indicates results from OOAPI trials, and confirms that OOAPI has sufficient performance to implement highly effective TMN operations system.

    High-speed pulse propagation, up to several hundred Mbps or higher, will play an important role in telecommunication systems for B-ISDN. High-performance packaging, especially high-speed, high-throughput interconnection, is strongly required. For advanced telecommunication systems, giga-bit signal transmission has been developed at the multi-chip module level, and 300 to 600 Mbps signal transmission has been reached at the printed circuit board level. Electrical inter-cabinet interconnections of 150 to 300 Mbps have been achieved for up to several tens of meters. High-speed, high-throughput connectors are the key to achieving high-performance telecommunication packaging systems. Two technologies are extremely important. One is for high-density, high-pin-count connectors, and the other is for high-speed signal transmission connectors. The requirements for the connectors needed for advanced high-performance telecommunication systems are described. Several high-density, high-bandwidth connectors developed for high-performance packaging system are introduced.
