  • Orientable Closed Surface Construction from Volume Data

    Surface construction is known as a way to visualize volume data. Although currently used algorithms such as marching cubes have good enough quality for volume visualization, they do not ensure adequate surface topology. These algorithms work well when the surface is rather simple. While when complicated, the surface does not separate the internal and external spaces, that is, there exist some holes on the surface, or exist redundant overlaps or self-intersection. Actually, adequate surface topology is important not only for visualization but for laser stereolithography, which creates real 3D plastic objects. In the present paper, we propose a new method that produces a set of triangular patches from a given volume data. The fact that the set of patches has no holes, no redundancy, no self-intersection, and has orientable closed surface topology is shown.

    Noise properties in cascaded erbium-doped fiber amplifiers used in subcarrier multiplexed analog video distribution systems are experimentally examined. The noise dependency on signal wavelength is measured for a 4 stage EDFA cascade, and it is shown that an optical narrow bandpass filter is not necessary after each fiber amplifier for signal wavelength of 1.5511.560µm and that optical bandpass filters are necessary for shorter wavelength than 1.551µm to avoid the noise degradation by spontaneous-spontaneous beat noise. Finally, the attainable distribution loss is estimated for AM and FM video distribution systems.

    We define the communication complexity of a perfect zero-knowledge interactive proof (ZKIP) as the expected number of bits communicated to achieve the given error probabilities (of both the completeness and the soundness). While the round complexity of ZKIPs has been studied greatly, no progress has been made for the communication complexity of those. This paper shows a perfect ZKIP whose communication complexity is 11/12 of that of the standard perfect ZKIP for a specific class of Quadratic Residuosity.

    An integrated optoelectronic multiplier based on GaAs optoelectronic device technology, is proposed. The key element is an optoelectronic half-adder logic gate, which is composed of only two GaAs metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors (MSM-PD's). It operates with a single clock delay, less than 100 ps. An optoelectronic full-adder and a multiplier are also composed of half-adders and surface-emitting laser-diodes (SEL's). Cascadable gates with optical interconnections are integrated. Utilizing improved device fabrication technology, an optoelectronic high-speed multiplier with a minimum number of gates will be realized in LSI.

    This paper reviews the development of low temperature poly Si TFT, scattering light valves addressed by TFTs and a brighter video projection system using them, with the attensin of their optical aspects. The first includes main feature which are laser induced crystallization of PECVD a-Si in almost entirely solid phase by high speed scanning CW Ar laser beam. The second includes photo-polymerization induced phase separation method for the preparation of liquid crystal polymer composite (LCPC) material and scattering light valve with low driving voltage of 6 Vrms. The last gives a brighter video screen image with high contrast ratio and includes higher light efficiency through LCPC light valves and projection lens unit by about four times than that of conventional LC light valves with polarizers.

    The term telecommunications is derived from "tele", meaning at a distance, and "communications", meaning exchanging of information. The history of electronic communications has thus far been applied to the exchange of spoken, visual, and or textual information between pairs of people, pairs of machines, and people and machines. The role of telecommunications has been to provide a medium for the exchange of the information, with the burden placed on the communicating people or machines to initiate the communication and to interpret or process the information being exchanged. In this paper we attempt to predict some future trends in telecommunications, reaching into the next century. Such predictions are inevitably incomplete, inaccurate, or both. Nevertheless, it is a useful exercise to try to anticipate these trends, and more importanly the issues and problems that will arise in the future, as a way of focusing near-term research efforts and suggesting opportunities. One of our hypotheses about the future is that telecommunications networks will become much more active in initiating, controlling, and participating in the exchange of information. Our approach will be to first review some particularly important past developments, and then to try to predict the future in two ways: First, by extrapolating present trends and activities, and second, by criticizing current trends and anticipating problems looming on the horizon.

  • Methods to Securely Realize Caller-Authenticated and Callee-Specified Telephone Calls

    This paper presents two methods for securely realizing caller-authenticated and callee-specified calls over telecommunication networks with terminals that accept IC cards having KPS-based cryptographic functions. In the proposed protocols, users can verify that the partner is the proper owner of a certain ID or a certain pen name. Users' privacy is protected even if they do the caller-authenticated and callee-specified calls and do not pay their telephone charge in advance.

  • A Parallel Collision Resolution Algorithm for Mobile Systems

    For the connection request procedure in mobile communication systems, a previous study had shown that the 3-channel systems provide the haighest maximum of stable per channel throughput. In this paper, we propose and study a new algorithm, called the Parallel Collision Resolution Algorithm, which can be implemented in a Q-channel connection request environment, where Q3. For the implementation, the channels are arranged in R groups, where R is a positive integer. The collision resolution scheme distributes the collided messages over all the groups so that throughput and delay measures can be improved. At any point in time, there can be a maximum of R collision resolution schemes operational irrespective of the channel or the group number over which collisions occurred. The performance measures are estimated by computer simulation. Under the new algorithm, almost the same level of the perchannel stable throughput measure of a 3-channel network can be achieved in networks for which Q3. This feature allows freedom to the network designer to employ a higher number of connection request channels without forfeiting high channel utilization rates. When Q is an integral multiple of 3, the maximum stable per channel throughput level achieved can be the same as that achieved by the 3 channel system, if the grouping of channels is such that each group consists of 3 channels. When Q is not an integral multiple of 3, the intuitive strategy of organizing the channels in such a way that Q/3 groups consist of 3 channels each and one group consists of (Q mod 3) channels, may result in much degraded performance. It is found that, if the channels are so organised that no group is composed of (Q mod 3) channels, the performance levels can be substantially enhanced. Also, under the new algorithm, the delay measure is significantly improved, particularly in schemes like the mobile satellite systems with high propagation delays. We conclude that the new scheme presents a promising collision resolution methodology for connection request procedures.

  • Cassette-Type Non-blocking 100100 Optomechanical Matrix Switch

    A non-blocking optomechanical matrix switch has been developed that is assembled using cassettes as units. Switching can be accomplished between two ferrule-terminated-fiber groups by automatic disconnection and reconnection. The fabricated 100100, 3.1-mm-ferrule-pitch, 710W490D500H (mm) switch exhibits a mean insertion loss of 0.78dB in the 1.31-µm wavelength.

    Digital mobile communication systems have been developed to cope with remarkable growth of the existing analog cellular telephone market. The digital cellular system needs to meet the following requirements: higher frequency efficiency, increased system capacity, new services including ISDN services, and network reliability improvements. New techniques supporting digital mobile radio sevices are presented in this paper, with special focus on TDMA radio link control. Radio channel and signalling structures are designed to achieve spectrum efficiency and flexibility. A random access scheme giving excellent access capability is shown. This paper also presents the system design and configurations of a TDMA digital cellular system based on the Japan standard, which is being developed by NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc. The system is based on the OSI model to enhance system flexibility for future services. Various techniques and devices to achieve economical and compact base stations and portable telephones are developed: multiple-carrier amplifier with extremely low distortion, facsimile/data adaptors with error free and high throughput, coherent detection with adaptive carrier tracking, and so on.

  • Numerical Analysis of Stability Property of an Optically Injection-Locked Semiconductor Laser Taking Account of Gain Saturation

    Stability property of an optically injection-locked semiconductor laser taking account of gain saturation is discussed. Numerical analysis shows that stable locking region is broadened due to gain saturation. This is because of rapid damping of relaxation oscillation due to gain saturation. It is also found that stable locking region is also broadened with increasing injection current since damping of relaxation oscillation becomes strong with increasing injection current. Numerical calculations of lasing spectrum show that the magnitude of sidepeaks appeared at harmonics of relaxation oscillation frequency under unstable locking condition are suppressed due to gain saturation.

    In this paper, we propose a new network organizing method for packet radio networks, a layered self-organizing method. In the layered self-organizing network, whole service area is divided into multiple sub-areas and one base station is settled in each sub-area. Communication links are settled in shorter time than the conventional self-organizing method. We evaluate the network organizing performance of the method by using simulations.

    Land mobile communications in Japan have shown remarkable progress in recent years. The total number of all types of radio stations has exceeded 750 million as of March, 1992 and more than 80% of them are used for land mobile communications. The more radio telecommunications becomes popular, the more demand for communicating at any time, at any place and with anyone, intensifies. Various new land mobile systems such as digital cellular telephones have been developed and to be introduced. These new systems are designed to promote effective frequency use in order to meet the exploding demand for it. The digitalization of land mobile communication systems will be the key technology which enable to bring the new possibility in the land mobile communications.

    In mobile communication systems using Dynamic Channel Assignment, channels are possible to be rearranged so that blocking probability can be made low. The smaller the number of cells where channels are rearranged, the smaller the load on the base stations in the cells. Also, we can reduce the deterioration of communication quality caused by reassingning a new channel to a call instead of the channel already assigned. In this paper, we consider not only how to rearrange channels but also which channel should be rearranged and assigned to a new call in rearrangement, and propose very simple but effective methods for rearrangement. The ways to select a candidate channel to be rearranged and assigned to a new call in the new methods make the number of cells where a channel is rearranged smaller. We also examine the relations between characteristics and the number of cells where a channel is rearranged. Using computer simulation results, the properties of the new rearrangement methods are compared with those of the traditional methods.

  • Performance Evaluation of Block SR-ARQ Scheme in High-Speed Communication Environments

    In high-speed packet networks, protocol processing overhead time becomes remarkable in determining the system performance. In this paper, we present a new Selective-Repeat ARQ scheme (called Block SR-ARQ sheme), in which a packet is transmitted or retransmitted in the same way as basic SR-ARQ scheme, but a single acknowledgement packet is used to acknowledge a block of packets. The maximum number of packets acknowledged by an acknowledgement packet is defined as block size. We analyze the system throughput and the average packet delay over the system, and the accuracy of approximately analyzed results is validated by simulation. Furthermore, we show that there exists an optimal block size which obtains both the maximum throughput and the minimum average packet delay.

    Modeling and performance analysis have played an important role in the economical design and efficient operation of switching systems, and is currently becoming more important because the switching systems should handle a wide range of traffic characteristics, meeting the grade of service requirements of each traffic type. Without these techniques we could no longer achieve economy and efficiency of the switching systems in complex traffic characteristic environments. From the beginning of research on electronic switching systems offering circuit-switched applications, Stored Program Control (SPC) technology has posed challenges in the area of modeling and performance analysis as well as queueing structure, efficient scheduling, and overload control strategy design. Not only teletraffic engineers and performance analysts, but also queueing theorists have been attracted to this new field, and intensive research activities, both in theory and in practice, have continued over the past two decades, now evolving to even a broader technical field including traditional performance analysis. This article reviews a number of important issues that have been raised and solved, and whose solutions have been reflected in the design of SPC switching systems. It first discusses traffic problems for centralized control systems. It next discusses traffic problems inherent in distributed switching systems.

    This paper proposes a new fault tolerant intercommunication scheme for real-time operations and three new interconnection networks to construct a fault tolerant multi-processor system for pipeline processings. The proposed intercommunication scheme using bank memory switching technique has an advantage to make a fault tolerant pipeline system so that it can detect any failure caused in a processing element of the system. In addition, it can overcome conventional problems caused in interconnection circuits to flow data with one way direction such as a pipeline processing.

    The newly developed GaAs-pin/SLM, that is structured with a GaAs-pin diode photodetector and a ferroelectric liquid crystal as the light phase modulator, shows the accumulative thresholding characteristic against the optical energy of the write-in pulse train. We experimentally investigate this characteristic and discuss its applications to optical parallel processings.

  • A High-Frequency Link Resonant Inverter

    This paper describes configuration and operation of a high-frequency link resonant inverter using cycloconverter techniques. In this inverter, a resonant link high-frequency voltage generated in a primary resonant inverter is isolated by a high-frequency transformer, then directly converted into a resonant link low-frequency voltage in a cycloconverter. The switching losses and surge voltage levels can be reduced by making all switches in the primary inverter and the cycloconverter operate at zero voltage. The relationship between characteristic impedance of the resonant circuit and the conversion efficiency, and the distortion factor characteristics of the output voltage waveforms are discussed by comparing of analytical and experimental results.
